3.5 stars wow
ok so, just like with the first book, if this were a movie, it'd be AMAZING!!! it was definitely spooky and had me creeped out at multiple parts, i even read this book at night in the middle of a black out and suddenly got too scared to go to sleep... AND THIS IS COMING FROM A FAN OF HORROR MOVIES!! now dont expect to be horrified by these novels, but i think they are a great duology to read during spooky season, and definitely will get you a little creeped out
it was super fast paced, i was VERY engaged during this book, and it actually helped pull me out of a mini slump!
but what brought it down, SAME WITH THE FIRST BOOK, the ending...
from here im gonna write some major spoilers on the ending so skip if you dont want to get spoiled but if you dont care then read on!
---------------------------------------------------------
now, this ending didn't feel rushed like the last ending's book, but it was just a major let down. after everything the character has to go through you're like "oh theres no way shes gonna make it out without an insane climax or whatever", and that did not happen. she was able to escape SOOOOO EASILY i just got disappointed. like, first of all, how is the killer THAT PATHETIC???? like, if he's able to create this whole almost haunted house like thing JUST FOR ONE GIRL, as well as the whole amusement part situation in the first book, youd think we'd be dealing with someone who genuinely knows what he's doing when it comes to killing people. like the killers in the naturals series. there, they're smart and are able to easily get away with murder, as well as practically never let their victims escape. and i was expecting something grand from this killer, and for him to just swing randomly hoping he'd hit her, or completely lose his grip and fall to the floor after having a knife to her throat, it didn't feel like the same people who setup all of these movies. i was just simply disappointed. like good for ivy for escaping, but how was it so easy??? how did the killer just fall and let her get away sooooo easily??
OH AND ALSO, why did we never get the answer as to what happened to him when she DID get to safety? he just disappeared in the middle of the woods and that was it? like really? how did the police not find him when they went to investigate the house? AND ONCE AGAIN HOW DO THE BODIES JUST DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY???? like, FIRST OF ALL, WE LITERALLY HEARD HIM KILL SHAYLA IN THE HOUSE WHILE IVY WAS THERE!!!! and later for it to just be like "the bodies were buried in nebraska or wherever they were actually buried", THAT SIMPLY DOESNT ADD UP???? like the only explanation to that was it was a pre-recording of him killing her, BUT STILL WHY WOULD HE PLAY THAT IN THE HOUSE??? thats stupid!! like if he's gonna do something like that, with the whole vibe of the place and everything ivy saw, i would've thought we would've done a grand reveal to something like that like when she was in the theater watching the "movie".
and also, taylor's body?? HELLO???? she got killed at the house, and her body also just disappeared??? from the time she died to when he was about to kill ivy, its actually IMPOSSIBLE for him to hide her body in that little of a time so the police wont find it! like, either the police didn't look hard enough (or maybe even at all), or she just straight up teleported to nebraska what else could've happened
ok and the last part that made me SOOOOO PISSED was how after running over an hour with natalie to get to safety AND GETTING LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND A CAR ON A STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AT THE BUTTCRACK OF DAWN, ivy REALLLLLLY decided to do the trek AAAAAAAALLLLL THE WAY BACK TO THE HOUSE so she wouldn't leave parker again. REALLY?? HOW STUPID IS THAT??? what if he died? what if the killer is waiting for her to come back and she simply dies too?? what if they're stranded there and can't find a way to get back cuz why would they find another car there??? theres too many what if's, its ridiculous. that genuinely made me sooo mad. and just their luck that the police happen to find them right once ivy finds parker??? also waaaay too lucky to the point where it's unbelievable.
this simply makes me more aggravated bc ivy had main character syndrome (ok sure i know shes the main character but HERE ME OUT), she just HAD to be the hero the WHOOOOOOOOOOLE book. she just HAD to follow along with the killer's goals so he could kill her because the police wouldn't solve it in time. also, why did the police put absolutely 0 effort into this fricking case? like really?? anyways, she just HAAAD to try to kill him on her own. she just HAAAAAD to save parker and the rest of the bunch bc she thinks shes superwoman! like honey lets think logically: you almost lost your life from the killer's first little game, 5 or so other people were presumed dead from said killer, and instead of being like "ok i dont wanna lose my life", you go to risk it just to prove a point? that it is the same killer? you really think you're going to get revenge and kill him back or something?

ok, no more spoilers!
so, yes, the ending disappointed and annoyed me, and so did the main character, but the feelings this book made me feel until the last 50 ish pages are what's bringing my rating up. if this were an adult horror book with a MUCH better ending, it would be PERFECTION! ABSOLUTE PERFECTION! I dont think it being ya really took much away from the book, i just feel there would be less "oh just to happened to" and completely lucking out in the story because the audience is younger and doesn't want a tragic ending or whatever.
anyways, read these if you want a fun halloween duology with a very creepy setting and slasher vibes, but just go in knowing the endings suck and the main character is annoying. DONT EXPECT A MASTERPIECE READ THIS FOR PURE ENJOYMENT MKAYYYYYY
