Expanded and completely revised, this book is the perfect companion for longarm, sit-down, or hand quilters to add a simple but beautiful background filler to their quilting repertoire. Dubbed "McTavishing" after its creator, it has become the most popular new design concept in quilting today. As shown in the extensively illustrated projects, McTavishing may be added to any quilt or garment, from wholecloth to contemporary art quilts, and done by hand, domestic machine, or longarm technique. The book's how-to chapters demonstrate the uses of the McTavishing stitch—as an addition to an open quilt block, in a border, to highlight complex applique, to custom tailor a favorite garment, or as part of a larger overall design—while the accompanying DVDs provide lessons from the author. Accompanied by interviews with accomplished hand and domestic machine quilters, this guide offers readers an unparalleled view of the exciting new quilting process. This edition boasts revised how-to chapters, new graphics, new text, and a simpler teaching method. Additional pages feature new quilts and quilters as well as a new section on modern quilting styles.
First, be absolutely sure you get a version of this book with 2 instructional DVDs. While the book has photos on almost every page, 90% of the how-to instruction is on the 2 DVDs. I was led to this technique/book by Leah Day's quilting blog/website and I'm so glad I followed Leah's suggestion. McTavishing is beautiful and Karen McTavish's personality comes through in her video DVDs. The photos show McTavishing on both whole-cloth and pieced tops, with some print fabrics but primarily solids. The close-ups are super at showing the free-motion designs in relationship to piecing. Most of the examples are of high or ultra-high density quilting, but there is some mention of using less dense technique. Over all, I love this book and, someday, I hope to be able to do it even half as good as it looks here!!
This book comes with a DVD about MACHINE QUILTING. Karen is a long-armer who had developed an award winning quilting style. She teaches you how to do it and where to apply the technique. The DVD shows the technique done on a long arm, on a domestic machine and by hand-quilting. I love the technique and have tried it several times on my domestic machine.
I have purchased all of Karen's DVDs and books, I consider her a very talented long arm quilter.
This book was on my wish list for a long time. I should've bought it sooner! The text descriptions and the nicely-filmed DVD instructions were just what I needed to try some different techniques in machine quilting. I'm sure I will find this useful and will re-read parts of it many times. It didn't even go onto a bookshelf, but instead to a niche by my sewing machine.
