Oh honey, this book? Absolutely had me kicking my feet and giggling like a teenage girl with a crush and zero impulse control.

Let’s set the scene: Noa just got dumped and said, “Screw it, I’m finding myself!” cue solo vacation vibes. But plot twist—her brother’s best friend (read: her secret forever crush and the man who swiped her v-card like a thief in the night 8 years ago) casually shows up on the same flight. Coincidence? Girl, please. The universe ships it.

Alex, the broody protector with golden retriever energy, is all “I’m just here to keep you safe”—but sir, you are also burning holes in this girl’s clothes with your eyes and pretending it’s just friendly concern? Be so serious.

Their chemistry? OFF. THE. CHARTS. The tension was so thick I needed a machete to get through it. The “we can’t because of your brother” drama gave me life. Forbidden love with a side of emotional baggage? Inject it straight into my veins.

And let’s talk about the spice. Oh. My. God. These scenes were not written—they were crafted. Like Michelangelo sculpted each moan with a quill dipped in liquid lust. I had to put my Kindle in the freezer and ask it to calm down.

Bottom line: If you like pining, second-chance hookups, brother’s-best-friend angst, and a good “oops we’re sharing a hotel room” moment… this is your next obsession. 10/10 would let Alex ruin my emotional stability.

Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book that is about to be released on August 9th called, My Kind of Trouble. Noa is newly single and moving back into her parents' house at 28 years old, she's always the girl with a plan but her life is not where she had planned for it to be right now. So she makes a list, a "30 before 30" list to get her life back on track and accomplish some goals and dreams she has along the way before she turns 30. One of the things on her list is to spend a month traveling, so she sets off, feeling like this will be the perfect alone time to reset and refresh for her to get her life back on track. But here she finds out she's not alone. Her brother didn't want her traveling alone so he convinced his best friend Alex to secretly book the same trip, same flights, same hotels, etc. And when she runs into Alex on her flight, he is the last person she would've wanted to see. They have a secret history they don't dare speak of. This was a second chance, childhood friends, slow burn, brother's best friend love story. I loved all the traveling and adventures in this, it was a perfect summertime read! I really loved the message behind this story, that even if your life isn't currently where you're wanting it to be, it's never too late to change things, to chase your dreams, and to find your happiness in life. (Also just have to say I loveddd that the author threw in Friends and Gilmore Girls references throughout the story!) 🧡📚

Thank you to the author and to the publisher for this ARC of My Kind of Trouble, in exchange for an honest review.

I don't normally write book reviews. Hell I don't think I've ever wrote a book review! There's just something too overwhelming about having to describe how a book has made me feel in just a couple of paragraphs! But I couldn't not write a review for this masterpiece!
I also want to note I have NEVER given 5 stars to a contemporary romance (fantasy girl at heart) so I hope this too shows just how awestruck I am with Elle's debut novel!

I'm blown away by how relatable and authentic Noa and Alex are. It made me feel like I was reading my own journal about my own life despite not having the same experiences as them.
Me being the only girl in a family of very overprotective men including Dad, older brother and many many uncles. I totally get Noa's need for independence and to feel understood! I also married an overprotective‐ golden- retriever vibes man who wants to take care of me but by showing me support and listening, never making me feel less than like Alex! So seeing Noa and Alex's relationship bloom spoke to my heart! It was the smallest of details that made the biggest impact that had me literally swooning!

As well as loving the well delevoped, relatable main and side characters. Elle has wrote a beautiful story of a young woman finding herself and shows how struggling with your life not going to plan doesn't mean your are not a strong, accomplished woman and oh how I needed that right now!

My only criticism is that reading this was nearly grounds for divorce because my Husband decided to ask if I would help him make tea right as I began chapter 29. I told him he can starve. How dare he interrupt the 'fuck it' moment in a forbidden romance!

Elle should be so pround of this delightfully descriptive book with characters and their dynamics being so relatable telling a wholesome story of strength and love. The perfect cozy summer romance read and a love letter to all on their own journey of self discovery and mental health.

This is Elle’s first book and it was a total smash! She nailed it. She did an amazing job representing anxiety and pining over the one forbidden love. The angst was amazing. The way she built up their connection as adults versus teenagers while throwing in flashbacks was great. Truly this was so fun to read and I felt myself rooting for them almost from the beginning.

Elle also built in some amazing side characters. I’m totally hooked in to this world and I cannot wait to see what happens with Ryan and Lola and Tes and even Bella. I loved the way Alex and Noa fought for each other and had the support of her family. I REALLY adored Noa and Ryan’s mom and dad and their fierce love of Alex and their unwavering support of the young boy who grew into the amazing man he was.

I also feel like an epilogue can deeply affect the closure I need for a story. The epilogue was great but even better than that was the authors note. Elle captured pregnancy thoughts, anxiety spirals, racing thoughts, heart break that isn’t heartbreaking, friendships, and family dynamics so beautifully. I cannot wait to see what else she brings us!

One reason I love ARC reads is coming across a book that surprises you in all the good ways -Elle if this is a debut novel then I eagerly await you next book.

Noa is so relatable to, feeling lost, heart broken most if not all of us have felt that way and if we’re lucky enough we find our Alex … and extra points if we stubble across an isolated waterfall.

Summary

Overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/5

Spicy rating: 🌶️🌶️ 2/5

Fluff rating: 💖💖💖💖 4/5

This is my book besties debut novel and it a love letter to all the anxiety ridden girlies figuring their way out through life. I beta read this book pre edits so for it to be 4 ⭐️ at that stage is a massive achievement and I whole heartedly believe it will be 5 by the time it’s fully edited.

Overall El I loved your book! And I’m so fucking proud of you. It was tender and heartfelt and your feelings literally shine through. It’s clearly a character driven story of self discovery and growth and taking back control of your life. Sweet cozy and fluffy and perfect for the summer romance vibes.

Noa is super relatable and the manifestation of her anxiety and panic is very realistic. I also really love her development. It’s clear she’s mixed up and unsettled and not knowing what to do next at the start and slowly builds up that confidence to be ok in the unknown and the temporary and figuring out what she wants and who she wants to be.

I like the use of the small flashbacks throughout and I don’t feel like they interrupt the story at all

I think the character development is great. Even side characters. I loved Lola and she is a fantastic use of comic relief and girlhood vibes/ female friendships. Ryan is fab and I’m super looking forward to his book! They feel really organic and real. I really like the subtle foreshadowing for Ryan and Bella 😏

I loved that you created tension and drama in the 3rd act I without a break up! And the way nos deals with her thoughts on that I think they were really true to character.

I can’t lie I don’t love 3rd person in contemporary because it really takes me out of the story and I think makes the pace a bit slower than it needs to be. However this is very much just my preference.

Gives the cozy vibes of best hex ever but without the magic aspect. If you love books like daydream by Hannah Grace meets the do-over by TL Swan with a bit of wild love by Elsie Silver I really think you’ll enjoy this one.

Where to even start with this book!!
I absolutely loved Elle’s debut novel about Alex and Noa. So APOLOGIES in advance about this rambling review but 😅❤️‍🔥🍑🎉🦞
My Kind of Trouble is a contemporary romance following Noa after her new break-up at 28 years old. She heads home from London to move back in with her parents in Freymoor, queue small town vibes and quirks which are so wholesome and comforting as they unfold on the page.
During Noa’s initial move back home, she comes across childhood friend and ex-romantic interest, Alex, whilst out drowning her sorrows with brother Ryan. Alex and Ryan have remained best friends over the years since school, however Noa never kept in touch with Alex after making a pact when she lost her virginity to him to never everrrr tell her brother about their fling. EEK👀

Noa’s big plans to move on with her life, and get over her Ex-boyfriend include backpacking around South East Asia. Ryan, being the overbearing golden retriever brother that he is, insists his best friend Alex accompanies her on this trip to ensure her ‘safety’ (without Noa’s knowledge or approval first). Side note: We truly get to know Alex and Noa’s history from the flashbacks throughout, but PERKS - he’s fitter now 😍

I absolutely loved all of the travel content throughout, and Elles own experiences of long term “travelling” truly reflect the magic of found family and finding yourself whilst backpacking in Asia 🤿🌺🐠🌶️🍺

I love love love the side characters woven into this book which do an amazing job of keeping a funny sense of home and friendship and true meaningful ties to your roots (and self) whilst exploring the world. I cannot WAIT to see if some of them reappear in the next book🤞🏼🤞🏼😉
💞Adored the girlhood vibes found both at home with best friend Tes, and abroad with Lola and the gang, and exploring Noa’s outlook on her own ability to be independent and self sufficient was justtttt life affirming.

Noa and Alex’s relationship was so flirty and familiar, which made their story even more fun to watch it develop and change throughout the book with lots of spicy scenes and angst - think hostel vibes, bar scenes, family dinners😳
The way they interact with each other truly had me crying and feet-kicking. I loved the way that Alex so naturally supported Noa with her anxiety, and the way the reader is able to feel true self-discovery and growing confidence in Noa throughout the book, truly heartwarming and so thought provoking!!

Wow. What an emotional rollercoaster.

El has managed to meticulously craft a beautiful story which speaks to the heart of a lot of our insecurities as young adults.

Noa’s anxiety is portrayed so authentically and honestly that it illustrates the daily struggle for suffers in the most clear and empathetic way possible.

Alex’s parental attachments and abandonment issues really resonate too. Broken families aren’t often depicted with such focus and clarity, so Alex’s character development speaks so clearly to both an awareness and compassion of this issue in our modern world.

The crafting of the story is utterly beautiful and had me tearing through the pages until the early hours each night. It made me laugh out loud and shed many a tear.

If this is El’s ability in her debut novel, then I will feel privileged to read whatever her incredible mind can formulate next xx

This book is Elle's debut novel and I loved it!

It's a super cute, summer romance vibes book that will have you kicking your feet and giggling away!!

I really enjoyed the character development in this, even with the side characters!

I love the flashbacks to their childhood, I feel like it helps to add a depth to the story

I'm not usually a huge fan of 3rd person, especially in contemporary romance as I feel like I struggle to connect with the characters on a deeper level, but I did enjoy this one!

Overall great debut book 😍

Noa and Alex’s story was a roller coaster of emotions this was best friend’s little sister romance. So you get the forbidden trope filled with angst. I loved how the flashbacks were played out to help create the growth in their relationship through the years to present. Noa was a really relatable character and I loved how the author represented anxiety in this book so accurately. Also she aced the side characters as well I was loving each and every one of them.

[Full review to come] I had the pleasure of beta reading this book and not only was the chemistry amazing, it was so touching! For fans of Lyla Sage and Alexandra Kiley.

I found Noa incredibly relatable. Many of her experiences resonated with me, from the dreaded 'we need to talk' breakup to the avoidance of difficult conversations. I'm also an overthinker who used to slam doors. Her parents and their 20 questions was spot on! I understood her feeling that by her late 20s, she should have had everything figured out, especially since I, too, was dreaming of the future at 19. Even the smaller details—like her love for Starbursts and Michael Morpurgo books, and finding comfort in a favorite TV show and milky coffee—made her feel so real.

Elle, this was such a great debut novel and really relatable.

Noa thought she'd had her life perfectly planned out until she's dumped at 28 and has to move back in with her parents. She's on a journey of finding herself again and figuring out what she wants to do with her life.

Noa decides to go on a trip to Thailand, but her brother doesn't want her to go alone, so he enlists the help of his best friend Alex to accompany her on the trip.

The tension and the banter between Noa and Alex was so good. Noa and Alex have known each other for a long time and I really loved that they understood each other so well and were there for each other in some really important moments.

Loved that the book also focused on friendships, Noa has her lifelong friend Tes, and then she made friends like Lola along the way from her travelling.

I loved the mental health representation of Noa's anxiety and how it affects her and how her mind can spiral, it was really relatable.

Thank you so much, Elle for the ARC!

I absolutely loved this book!!! It was such a gripping easy read. I feel like it’s a really relatable story, Noa is feeling lost in her late 20’s after going through a breakup and not really knowing who she is. She goes on a self discovery journey and the character she is by the end of the book is so empowering. What a dreamy MMC Alex is ❤️‍🔥 I feel like If you love a brother’s best friend trope you’ll love My Kind Of Trouble. The spice was definitely spicy but I loved the fact that it was the perfect balance and didn’t take away from the story 🌶️
I couldn’t believe it is Elle’s first novel, her level of writing is incredible and I’m excited to read more from her in the future!! 🫶🏼

ARC Review:

Noa feels lost after her breakup, moving back to her parents. She has a 30 before 30 list, which includes a solo trip. Which is an amazing idea that everyone should do once in their lives.
She’s followed by her brothers best friend, Alex. And boy oh boy is he something else. He’s in the wrong for following her, but DEFINITELY makes up as the story goes on.
This was such a fun, sweet, heartfelt and relatable story which had me captivated by the first word.

I am so grateful to have been a beta reader for Elle's debut novel!

This book is my exact taste in romance books; it made me laugh, smile, tear up, and it covered some deeper topics with the sensitivity and accuracy that they deserve! It is a beautiful romance with growth and self-discovery.

As someone who also struggles with anxiety, is an overthinker, a list-maker, and over-planner; Noa was an incredibly relatable character to me!

The anxiety rep, the travelling and culture, the friends and gilmore girls references, the spice, the chemistry, it was all perfect in my mind and I literally could not stop smiling when I was reading.

There is some hot as hell tension and incredible forced proximity in this book!

I also really enjoyed the flashbacks to Noa and Alex's childhood. This added some lovely depth to their relationship.

I thought Elle's writing flowed beautifully, and I absolutely loved it.

This would be a perfect summer read, it is being released in August, so get this book added to your tbr!

This romance was such a heartwarming debut novel by Ella Macdonald.

The travelling element allowed for an interesting backdrop, and the authors description of each location made it feel like I was right there with them, backpacking across Southeast Asia. It gave a real sense of adventure and I loved how it naturally made way for the forced proximity trope, which I always enjoy.

Noa made a great FMC, her anxiety, overthinking and need to plan everything, felt so relatable. I loved the fact that she was still shown as strong and fiery, even when her insecurities crept in.

The “30 before 30” was such a clever nod to her craving for control, as well as a gentle spotlight on the pressure so many of us feel at that age. When society whispers that you should have everything figured out, even when a lot of us haven’t. Noa feels this pressure as her life gets thrown into turmoil at the age of 28 and watching her trying to navigate this and grow emotionally because of it, was one of my favourite parts of the story.

Alex, our MMC, is protective and charming, the kind of man who makes you feel safe just by being near. While his protectiveness occasionally felt a little too intense for me, I couldn’t help but fall for him, especially in the more tender moments. I do wish we’d seen more of his family though. It would’ve added emotional balance alongside the depth we got from Noa’s side, and added another layer to his character. There were several moments when those interactions would have felt like a natural fit.

Told in dual POV, Noa and Alex’s chemistry is electric. But this story isn’t just about romance as the author shines a light on other, more important topics, including friendship and self discovery, as-well as others I won’t share to avoid any spoilers. The support characters were so well written, I’m hoping that this is the start of a series, as I would love to see more of them!

Overall, a heartfelt romance filled with emotional depth, steamy moments and stunning scenery.

I really hoped I would love this story. Unfortunately, this one was not for me and I struggled to connect with the characters.

The brother’s best friend trope can go two ways for me, and in this case, it leaned into the version I struggle with: the overprotective brother acting as if his best friend and adult sister getting together is the end of the world. Both leads are nearly or over 30, consenting, and clearly care for each other - so watching them sacrifice their relationship to avoid upsetting the brother felt frustrating. The stakes didn’t feel strong or believable enough to carry that much weight for that long. So with the main source of conflict feeling blown out of proportion, it was hard for me to stay emotionally invested.

The pacing was another challenge. This book is long - much longer than it needs to be - and the repetition in internal monologues and relationship setbacks made it a slow read.

On the positive side, the travel element was detailed and immersive. The MC’s trip through Southeast Asia is richly described, and if you’re a fan of destination romances or travel writing, that might be a highlight for you.

While this one didn’t fully work for me, readers who enjoy angsty forbidden romance and don’t mind a slow-burn with a longer page count might connect with it more.

For a debut novel this one was so great! It held up on its own so good, it was written very well. It had travel which is perfect for the summer vibes.
I think the anxiety element was handle perfectly and very nicely, the emotions towards it was amazing and truly inspiring and if you have anxiety yourself, you kind of relate to Noa character well.

On to the characters, I thought Noa and Alex were perfect, I loved the whole childhood friends, brothers best friend, second chance, it honestly gave off all of the right vibes and feelings.
And Noa and Alex! Just belong together and I really enjoyed reading their story, reading it all coming together but also get little parts of their past too.

The side characters were great too, great little additions to the story. I loved the whole 30 under 30 list I thought that brought fun to the story.

All around a great little summer read.

**ARC copy** This was such a fab story. Brother best friend is one of my favourite tropes! Noa dealing with a breakup and trying to find herself making a 30 before 30 list and working her way through them starting with a spontaneous trip abroad only to have an old flame turning up to put a spanner in her plans! Such a lovely story of finding yourself and finding the life you love, definitely recommend this one! Amazing writing for being a debut author, had me giggling at the banter and oh my nice and spicy!!

Navigating life before 30 was nothing but easy. Finding your way, deciding your calling and trying to please the people around you. Elle really touched on all the feels of growing up and paving your own path to satisfy your needs.
Noa falling for her brother’s best friend was not in her plan but when her brother, Ryan, sends Alex to follow Noa abroad to keep an eye on her, things change. I loved watching Noa find her groove as she traveled to a foreign country, stayed in hostels and found an unlikely friend group. Watching her come full circle as she came home and own her life despite being dealt some unplanned circumstances. Alex really stepped up and protected Noa but also gave her the space she needed to grow.

"She, honestly, felt like she could imagine ten different versions of her life for herself, and she was running out of time to them all. And the prospect of picking one felt overwhelming."

Elle's debut novel is a beautiful exploration of second chances and rediscovering who you are, pursuing your dreams no matter where you're at in your life and opening yourself up to new experiences and emotions. Noa Drake, our FMC, has just been through a breakup, quit her job, and moved back home. She feels lost and confused, her anxiety telling her that her life is completely off-track. But she decides to take herself on a month-long vacation across south-east Asia. The only problem is that her overprotective brother, unbeknownst to her, has forced his best friend, and Noa's former one-night-stand, Alex Fletcher to follow along and look out for her. However what starts as animosity slowly develops into the easy friendship they used to have and begins to bud into more and more.

For me, the highlight of this book is the way Noa grows into herself and chases her dreams. I see so much of my lovely friend Elle, the author of this book, in Noa, and I can only imagine how healing writing this novel must have been for her. The romance is, of course, also delicious, I just think Noa's journey takes the cake for me. I'm so excited to see Elle's writing develop further and witness the impact her books will surely have on many women who feel as though they are behind in life. Please give this book a try when it releases August 9th!

Huge thank you to the author for a copy of the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I am BLOWN away that this is a DEBUT novel. You can tell Elle poured her absolute heart and soul into this book- her passion leaps off the page.
Pulling inspiration from when Elle herself went traveling, the writing feels rich and made me want to sack off my own life to go traveling. (Provided it comes with a hot man to give me multiple Os in a waterfall 🙃🙃)

Noa is such a relatable character.
Just a normal woman trying to find herself again after a breakup. Forming new friendships, falling in love with life, grabing experiences by the balls and finding her spark again 💞
And the anxiety representation hit real deep. Yeah I can relate....

Alex... our delayed gratification king. The type of man who let's Noa grow but is there on the sidelines to support her. The perfect balance of support and encouragement.
Definitely book boyfriend material.

This book is the perfect comfort summer read 🧡
But warning... it'll make you want to book that flight ✈️

A sweet, light hearted romance with beautiful depths exploring different facets of mental health, which I think in our current society can be reflected in a lot of young women. From anxiety, overthinking, self doubt, conflicting feelings about success/worth (in terms of career) and also touching on men’s mental health.
The plot itself was enjoyable, funny and very easy to resonate with when looking at female friendship and the positive impact it has on us.
There is suggestion at the start to check out content warnings, its entirety up to you. Without spoilers, I think one trope can be quite a deal breaker for readers but it’s also a big plot point so please do have a look if you need to (it’s not a horrible trope, just divisive)
I thought the found family element was so beautiful, especially at the end I cried lots of emotive, happy tears. I’m excited to see there is a book 2 coming. There are hints at who we will get to learn more about and I’m excited to read it.

I really really enjoyed reading this book!

This is such a holiday read and what I loved was that although it is a ‘typical romance’ the characters do have a lot of depth to them. I especially loved Noa’s character arc and her journey with her anxiety

Noa and Alex really yearn for each other and be warned it is a very physical relationship (with several spicy scenes) so if that’s your vibe you’ll love this!!

I thought the first 60/70% of the book was engaging and enjoyable cause you’re reading about Noas travelling and meeting a nice diverse range of characters. Once the travel aspect is over I do think the pace slows slightly, but I do have to say I wasn’t expecting the thing that happens towards the end 👀 love that twist

Overall it was a great story with a lovely message! Defo worth the read ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I went into My Kind of Trouble hoping for a story that would pull me in, but unfortunately this one just didn’t hold my interest. I made it to 34% before deciding to DNF. Despite trying to push through, I found myself reading large chunks without really absorbing anything, which is never a good sign.

The writing itself isn’t bad, but the pacing and story just didn’t grab me. Life’s too short to spend on books that don’t click, especially when there are so many others waiting on my TBR. Sadly, this one just wasn’t for me.

My Kind of Trouble by Elle MacDonald is your next must-read for summer ☀️. If you're a sucker for the brother’s best friend trope with a second-chance twist—all set against the lush, sun-soaked beauty of Southeast Asia 🏝 —this book delivers in every way. Add in laugh-out-loud moments, a delicious slow-burn romance, and just the right amount of spice 🌶🌶🌶, and you’ve got pure escapist magic. Trust me, this one's about to blow up on BookTok ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Noa and Alex, brother's best friend romance.

I don't love books written from the third person point of view. It takes me out of the story a bit. A fair amount of this book felt stilted to me, whether it be the conversations or the descriptions.

The premise was common for a brother's best friend trope, but I think it was just the writing style that differed from my preferences that caused me to not quite love this one.
