I heard James Collins on the radio and thought I would give his book a try. I was not disappointed. He takes the reader through a familiar and beloved Psalm expounded with Old and New Testament scriptures to explain God's many promises to his flock. Whether you are a mature Christian or have a calling upon your heart to seek God's truth, The Shepherd will surely deepen your faith and understanding of God's loving nature and His desire to bless his children with an abundant life.

I absolutely loved being reminded of the Good Shepherd in James Collins’s book, The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23. Growing up amongst sheep, on our family farm, I was reminded again of the beautiful relationship that exists between the shepherd and his sheep. And how that relationship, discovered in Psalm 23 and other parts of the Bible, translates into a confidence we can know in walking under the care, direction, and discipline of our Good Shepherd. James’s book meaningfully covers Psalm 23, looking at each verse, helping readers know and understand the Shepherd narrative in the Bible. I love how he later transitions into the broader picture of the Shepherd and His sheep – specifically referencing Christ as the fulfillment of prophecy – drawing attention to Psalm 22, 23, and 24. And how Jesus is the true Shepherd, willing to die for His sheep. There was so much I was reminded of and encouraged by. Here are a couple gold nuggets:

“These words have comforted many heavy hearts, dried many tears, bandaged many wounds, given courage to the living, and comforted the dying. It is a psalm for all of life.”

“The good news is that David’s Shepherd from three thousand years ago is still our Shepherd today. You can count on the Lord. He will never leave you nor forsake you. His love and care for you are enduring, never changing, and always present.”

“The mere presence of the shepherd puts the sheep at peace. When he is near, they don’t panic or fight. They can lie down in peaceful slumber. It’s the same with you and me. Nothing reduces stress like the presence of the Shepherd.”

“We say all the time, Jesus died for me. He died for you, but you must understand that He died as you. Jesus took our place, the place you and I deserve.”

Those are four of many memorable moments in this beautifully written book. Take time to read it. You won’t be sorry.

I am always eager to read anything I can get my hands on concerning Psalm 23. I have said, many times, that this great passage is more than a Psalm for the dead, but is a Psalm for the living.

Bro. Collins does an amazing job with the text, holding true to a balanced interpretation of the text. I felt that his material was more than adequately researched. What I loved most about the book, without a doubt, was the highly relatable illustrative examples he used throughout each chapter. It really made the time-tested and truly loved text come alive for me.

For this cause alone, I believe that any reader would enjoy reading this well written book on the Shepherd’s Psalm.

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous passages of Scripture. I’ve heard it many times in my life, whether it be at funerals or simply in a sermon at church. I suppose it’s easy to miss the depth of a thing when you grew up hearing it over and over again. So this book good in that it made me stop and think about what it actually meant.

Collins does an amazing job digging deep into the roots of this loved passage of Scripture. He adds stories of his own life as well as stories of others to help emphasize the importance of it. I loved these examples, as well as the regular use of sound Scripture to back his claims. This book deepened my perspective on Psalm 23 and I will forever be grateful for it.

I wish everyone could read, “The Shepherd.” I enjoyed it so much. I have known the 23rd Psalm for as long as I can remember. I was amazed to discover the full meaning of the psalm. The Shepherd explains the relationship of the sheep to the shepherd or people to their Shepherd/Savior. I was so blessed to learn about the different ways God loves and takes care of me. I’ve read it twice and am sure to read it again. If you want to read this great book, you can find it on thejamescollins.com.

Another great book by James Collins. Pastor, Evangelist, and former Army Chaplain. He takes us through the 23rd Psalms and talks about shepherds and how they took care of their sheep and how this corresponds with Jesus as the good Shepherd and how he calls and takes care of his sheep, his followers. Biblical, and as always, some humor. You will enjoy this book as well as others by him.

One of my favorite books I've ever read. An INCREDIBLE explanation of the most famous chapter in the Bible, Psalm 23, The Shepherd Psalm. Collins, a former U.S. Army chaplain, delves into such interesting detail on this beloved psalm, and he fleshes out his explanations with such interesting military stories that pertain to faith in God!

BOTTOM LINE: "If the Lord is your Shepherd, you will never lack for anything you really need … forever," Collins rightly ascertains.

He says in life there are two groups of people: one says, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." The other says, "I am in want; therefore, the Lord is not my shepherd."

Collins writes, "Is it really that simple? Yes. The Lord is not your Shepherd if your life has emptiness, loneliness, and frustration. You will not be satisfied if anyone or anything else besides the Lord shepherds you. If your job [or other things, like relationships, addictions, etc., shepherd you] you will be restless, unfulfilled, and frustrated.... Only when the Lord is your Shepherd will you be able to honestly say in your soul, 'I shall not want.'”

The author is such a clear writer on this topic, it is really eye-opening and helps readers understand God's provision as a Shepherd. How we truly do have everything we need if Jesus is our Shepherd.

James Collins has written an extraordinary book in The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23.

When I received my copy in the mail, I opened it with anticipation; the book's cover was velvety like the nicer of the bristol or vellum sketch pads that I used to draw on as a young artist, and the cover had a photo of a lamb on it. The physical book seemed rather exquisite, and I wondered if the writing could really compare to the quality of the packaging.

But I was not disappointed. I am not a big fan of nonfiction. I like to write it, and I like to read memoir, but there have only been a few nonfiction volumes that I have really enjoyed, particularly ones that were theological in nature. I love the gospel, but find God more in fiction than in explanation.

Here, however, in The Shepherd, I was reintroduced to The Lord. And the writer really brought me face to face with God. I felt in reading the book that I was communing with God in prayer. It was a very peaceful feeling, and I'd read the book again to know God's truth afresh and share time with him.

If you are a Christian wanting encouragement, or if you know someone who wants and needs a message to help them to know Jesus, I highly recommend this outstanding book.

One never knows what one will find in the pages of a new book: entertainment, suspense, romance, humor, pathos or enlightenment. The Bible is the Word of God, and not as a substitute, but to complement it, The Shepherd helps show how to reach out to the One True God, and it is a clear path beside still waters, a path to Heavenly peace.

I’m grateful for “The Shepherd” by James Collins.

Tackling Psalm 23 as a book project is a worthy pursuit, and Collins delivers a thought provoking, spirit-filled work which helped me see this verse in a new, fresh perspective.

Again, I’m thankful for it.

One of the standout passages included the following quote:

“Shadows do not exist unless there is a light somewhere.”

That’s good.

I have led the worship song “Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us” numerous times in churches across the Upper Midwest. It hits a little differently now thanks to this book. Here’s the passage which moved me.

“Remember, there is no such thing as wild sheep. If sheep run away, they die. Sheep cannot survive without a shepherd. Still, sheep are stubborn…”.

I know I can be stubborn.

In summary, this part of the book hit home for me:

“But the truth is, He is both. God is tough on sin, but He is tender with sinners. He is like a shepherd who is tough on predators threatening his flock but tender with each sheep, knowing them by name and caring for their every need. This is the right picture of God, and Jesus paints this picture of Himself.”

Collins helps us to inspire us to continuously consider right relationship with God - our Shepherd - and this is a book worthy of your time.

This was a great read about what a Shepherd is and what Psalm 23 is all about. Psalm 23 is a special scripture for all of us Christians and for anyone who likes reading the Bible . It shows us how our Shepherd, Jesus Christ, is with us, has been with us all along and will lead us into green pastures and will restore our souls if we will only put our trust in Him. It is a beautiful book and beautiful to read, and laugh sometimes, too, It will uplift you, encourage you, and inspire you to become as the Lord would have you to be…looking to Him for guidance and everything we need in this life and to guide us to the world to come that God, our Father, is preparing for us.

Quote from the book:

“If you are a Christian your Heavenly Father watches over you even in your darkest night. You find protection, not in the absence of danger, but in the power of God.”

James Collins states in his biography that he strives to be an effective communicator of God’s Word. I must say that after reading his book, The Shepherd, he remains true to his calling. The author begins by making the point that Psalm 23 is not just for the infirmed or to comfort those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, it is a psalm for the living—for the whole of life.

Throughout the whole of Scripture, the behavior of human beings is likened to that of sheep in need of a shepherd. The author uses this truth as the starting point for his book. That being said, one can only apply the 23rd psalm to their life if Jesus is their shepherd.

I was thrilled with Collins’ ability to break down the psalm verse by verse, often word by word. He uses illustration after illustration to describe the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep giving the psalm a fresh new meaning.

I appreciated the fact that the author presented many new insights I had not considered before. Among my favorites were his take on the shadow of death and why a shepherd needs to anoint a sheep’s head with oil.

The Shepherd is extremely well written. It’s easy to understand and relate to. I suggest reading the book spread out over several days due to the amount of insight and information presented. James Collins offers the best explanation of the 23rd Psalm that I’ve read. It is truly a great read.

This is a beautifully written book. It tells what the lovely Psalm 23 means and describes what exactly, Jesus as our Shepherd truly means. This is a special Psalm to me and many others, as it's read at funerals. The author tells us the true meaning of the Psalm 23, in that it tells of God's rest, protection and guidance, he gives us in the good and bad times. The author also talks about other Psalms too and what being a Child of God really means. The book lifted my heart, mind and soul. And I'm sure you too, will be blessed in reading it. A great book and Author!!

The Shepherd Experiencing Psalm 23 by James Collins is a great line by line study through this beloved Psalm. I love an in-depth study of the word that offers my time to meditate on the Word; this gave me exactly what I needed. This Psalm is one of the most profound and well-known pieces of scripture. James Collins dives deep and allows the reader to experience some of what King David must have been thinking and experiencing. James Collins uses the whole council of God in this commentary to show the reader how this section of scripture will change your life. This is a great addition to your library, I highly recommend it. The Lord is My Shepherd; I am grateful that he is.

I came across this book while in the middle of intense grief. I knew I needed the comfort and healing of the Lord rather than turning to some artificial vice to provide temporary relief for the pain I was feeling. I thank God for using this book to lovingly walk me through the care He has for me as my Shepherd! The Joel Osteen-esque jokes and Short stories got a little old, but the message was spot on and on time for me. I ended up sharing with my family

My husband and I immensely enjoyed The Shepherd Experiencing Psalm 23 written by James Collins. We took turns reading sections out loud so nothing got missed.

Psalm 23 is a popular psalm quoted by many, but how many truly understand it? James Collins opens readers’ hearts and minds to savor the truth under what he describes in: The Cross, The Crook, and The Crown. The writing style is easy and draws readers in to want to know further what the author has to share.

The author expounds on Line 1 of Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Chapter 1 begins with a story of a man named David. At the end of the book, readers are given the conclusion. What a powerful testimony!

In The Right Path, the focus is on Psalm 23: 2-3. Readers are shown why sheep are dependent on the shepherd to guide and lead them on a daily basis. He is their provider and protector. He knows just what they need to survive. After reading this chapter, readers will have a greater appreciation of Jesus and how He loves and cares for the sheep entrusted in His care. How He guides them on the right path.

Through The Valley - Yes; death is inevitable, and none of us will escape it. We're only partway in the book, yet; our understanding of Psalm 23 is elevated to a level never anticipated.

James Collins has been anointed by God to write this book. There's no other way to explain it. All our senses were activated while reading this book out loud together. Hallelujah! We enjoyed the interesting stories interjected throughout the chapters. There was a purpose, with a connection to Psalm 23.

In Behind Enemy Lines, the focus is on verses 5-6. Sheep are totally dependent on the shepherd to survive. The shepherd goes to great lengths to protect his flock. My husband remarked, “This is quite a book.” Tears filled his eyes, “Emotions stir up in me as we're reading it.”

The Best Is Yet To Come –Yes; the best is yet to come for believers who know with certainty that upon death, heaven will be their home for eternity. James Collins paints a beautiful picture with words about heaven. How glorious it will be. He also mentions hell; it’s a real place too. No one wants to spend eternity there.

Sadly, many people attend church for years, yet don't personally know who Jesus is, and what He died for. The book ends with, I Am the Good Shepherd. Yes, Jesus is the Good Shepherd. After reading this book, readers will know to a greater degree why this statement is true. And why He wants none to be lost.

What a blessing to read Bonus included in this book. An excerpt from: The Nativity by James Collins, The Shepherds and the Lamb.

James Collins keeps his readers engaged from start to finish. The Lord blessed him with many gifts, and he uses them to advance the Kingdom. The Shepherd Experiencing Psalm 23 is an amazing book. An excellent choice for a small-group Bible study.

Thank you to On Point Publishing and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book. A joy to read and a privilege to review.

The Shepherd by James Collins is a thoughtful and uplifting read that brings new life to the familiar words of Psalm 23. Collins takes you through each verse with relatable stories, meaningful analogies, and helpful context about shepherds, sheep, and the valleys David likely had in mind when writing this psalm.

What really stands out is how easy it is to read and understand, without losing any depth. Each chapter points clearly to Jesus as our loving and faithful Shepherd, always present and always enough.

One line that stuck with me is this: “The Lord is enough. That is the simple message of this first verse and the entire psalm: If you make the Lord your Shepherd, you depend on Him to meet your needs.” That truth is felt throughout the whole book.

If you’re looking for something that’s both comforting and rich in biblical insight, The Shepherd is a great choice.

James Collins is an excellent author, and he does not disappoint with this book. The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23 is a beautifully written and deeply insightful exploration of the meaning and significance of what is likely the most beloved psalm in the Bible. Collins skillfully weaves profound spiritual teaching with personal experiences, stories he has heard, and a welcome sense of humor. Rarely does a biblical passage truly come alive simply through a book about it, but this one is a clear exception. A must-read.

The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23 by James Collins is an engaging and enlightening read. This book will give you a fresh revelation on every aspect of Psalm 23 through the writer’s insightful approach. I now see Psalm 23 in a new light. I was thoroughly blessed on many levels. It’s an informative, educational, humorous, touching, and eye-opening book. There’s a lot of encouragement and advice. Collins's writing style is engrossing. The introduction begins with a most unusual dialogue and hooks the reader in. I love the humour throughout the book, and I now see poems like 'Mary had a little lamb' and 'Little Bo Peep' with a deeper understanding. Tommy’s answer to his teacher’s question gives further insight into sheep's nature, which is in tandem with human nature. The joke about the man who said,’ I’m not a member of this church’ cracked me up!

Collins explores Psalm 23 with the reader by thoroughly enlightening them about the nature of the sheep and a shepherd’s role in the sheep's life in ways I never imagined. Linking this aspect to our relationship with Jesus as my shepherd and me as the sheep is very powerful, profound, personal, and a revelation. Seeing myself as a sheep and the Lord as my shepherd greatly improved my understanding of Psalm 23.

Collins shares some touching personal experiences linked to Psalm 23. [ His mother’s funeral as a boy] There’s so much to learn from how he explores each verse that is mind-blowing. For example, ‘For His name's sake’, ‘the shadow of death’, etc, His ideas on these verses will remain with me forever! I am sure you will have an illuminating experience as well. Collins explains verse by verse, giving historical facts about David’s experience and relationship with his sheep as a shepherd.

The writer gives many powerful real-life testimonies, like that of Ira David Sankey, which help one make sense of life's difficulties. The rhetorical questions, especially the last sentence in the book, gave me food for thought. One must consciously distinguish between the Lord Jesus being a shepherd or your shepherd. The most touching bit to me is the sheep lovingly licking the hand of those who slit its throat. This refers to our Lord Jesus towards us!

The book raises important themes, such as the understanding that stubborn sheep will stray away and get lost. The sheep’s survival depends wholly on the shepherd. God wants to be our shepherd. We must share His goodness towards us with others. Eternity is something to look forward to when we allow our Shepherd to guide us through the valleys of life.

I highly recommend this book, and it’s worth its five stars for a fresh, insightful, engrossing and truly interesting read.

The Shepherd is a heartfelt and personal exploration of Psalm 23, written by James Collins, a pastor and veteran with a deep love for scripture. The book walks readers line by line through the famous psalm, connecting each phrase to stories from the Bible, real-life events, and personal anecdotes. It’s not a theological tome but rather a reflection, aiming to make the beauty and depth of Psalm 23 come alive for the everyday believer. With each chapter, Collins unpacks a single verse or idea, emphasizing God’s love, guidance, and care for His people in a way that's accessible and full of warmth.

Collins writes simply, sometimes with humor, and often with deep emotion. He doesn’t try to impress the reader with scholarship; instead, he reaches for the heart. What stood out most to me was his ability to make ancient words feel fresh. His use of stories like the little boy in the hospital holding his ring finger or the Civil War soldier saved by a song brought me to tears. The message that “the Lord is always with you” is a good one, and it is repeated often.

I also appreciated Collins’s honesty about his own limitations. He says right out that he doesn't know much about sheep, which makes his exploration of shepherding all the more relatable. That humility gives the book a kind of strength. But I also found myself wishing the book went deeper in parts. There’s a lot of comfort here, but not always a challenge. At times, it leaned into sentiment, which was moving.

By the end, I was glad I read it. This book is full of kindness. It doesn’t shout or try to prove anything. It gently reminds you that you’re not alone. I’d recommend The Shepherd to anyone who is hurting, anyone who’s looking for comfort, or anyone who wants to revisit the Psalms with a fresh set of eyes. It’s a good book to give to a friend going through something hard. It’s also a great companion to quiet mornings with coffee and prayer. It won’t shake up your theology, but it might just soothe your heart.

The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23 by James Collins is a beautifully written reflection on one of the most beloved passages in Scripture. Through captivating imagery, the author draws a profound comparison between a shepherd’s care for his lambs and Christ’s tender, unwavering care for His church.

From the very first chapter, That’s Enough, Collins invites readers into a deeper appreciation of Psalm 23. The touching story of a young boy learning, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,” instantly imprints the truth of God’s provision on the heart. From there, the book journeys line by line through Psalm 23, showing how each verse reveals the nearness of Christ—our Good Shepherd—who protects, guides, and provides for us.

The stories woven throughout bring the psalm to life, offering relatable and meaningful insights into how the Lord walks with us—not only in green pastures and still waters, but also in the valleys of fear, suffering, and even death. Collins reminds us that though we are prone to wander, our Shepherd never abandons us. Instead, He leads us with purpose, shielding us from the enemy’s attacks, and ultimately guiding us into His eternal presence.

What makes this book even more powerful is how it points to the ultimate act of the Shepherd’s love—Christ laying down His life as the sacrificial Lamb. Just as a shepherd risks everything for his flock, Jesus gave everything on the cross, proving His love and securing our eternal safety in Him. His sacrifice transforms the psalm from mere words of comfort into a living promise of redemption.

I was enthralled by how Collins breaks down each line, uncovering both comfort and challenge. This book left me reflecting on my own walk with the Lord and filled me with renewed gratitude for His sacrifice and care.

I believe The Shepherd: Experiencing Psalm 23 will bless anyone who reads it, whether new to the faith or seasoned in their walk with Christ. It’s a reminder that we are never alone—our Shepherd, who became the Lamb, is always with us, now and for eternity.
