No one at school knows that Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are secretly friends. They have nothing in common--until they rescue three kittens and form a club to help animals through volunteering, spying, and solving mysteries. In the first book of this series, Kelsey helps catch a runaway zorse (horse + zebra) with the help of another girl from school named Becca. The two are walking home when they happen upon a litter of kittens trapped in a dumpster and Leo Polanski is the only person around who can help get them out. The three unlikely friends decide to work together to help solve animal crimes with their secret club!
I started writing at 8 years old and when I speak to kids at schools or libraries I show them the stories I wrote as a child. I loved mystery series like Judy Bolton and Nancy Drew, and my DREAM was to write a series of my own. This happened when My Sister the Ghost was published by Avon books in 1994.
Since then I’ve been fortunate to write other series like The Seer, Dead Girl trilogy, Strange Encounters, Regeneration and Curious Cat Spy Club. I recently added a mini mystery to the Curious Cat Spy Club series titled Dog Rescue Time Warp which has a surprise ending.
I love hearing from fans and always write back. And I’ll send a spy activity packet to anyone that asks. Email link at www.LindaJoySingleton.com
This was a really cute and fast read. I enjoyed the mystery, it wasn't too simple or too difficult to figure out, so good for the age range of middle readers.
I felt the MCs were all rather realistic. Kelsey was a lonely girl and wanted a best friend more than anything. Leo most likely has Aspergers and Becca is the down-to-earth popular girl who liked the "bad boy". Who really is a jerk btw. The ending not-withstanding, he's a grade A jerk and a rap sheet waiting to happen.
The kids acted liked kids. It was believable to me. This was a good read, with a few moments of suspense here and there to keep the heart pounding. I liked the story of friendship and believing in oneself, though the thoughts behind keeping secrets kind of smells like lying to me.
I would recommend this for middle readers and above who like animals and mysteries. 4.5 stars.
My thanks to NetGalley and Albert Whitman & Company for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.
I have read every book that this author wrote and have been eagerly awaiting this first book in a new series. I am not disappointed! I love the elements of the book- a zorse, which I've never heard of, a mystery, and the melding of three very different kids into a club with a purpose. The characters are well-defined and capture the reader with their individuality.
Three unlikely middle school kids come together and become friends over their common desire to save some kittens found in a dumpster. Becca Morales is the popular girl in school who hangs out with the "in" girls called the Sparklers. Kelsey Case is a basically a shy girl with a desire to solve mysteries. Even more than that, though, she wants friends. And finally, Leo Polansky is a geeky kid who spends all of his time inventing things. Together they form the Curious Cat Spy Club. Who threw three tiny kittens into a dumpster? Why are pets all around town disappearing only to be returned when a reward is offered? The kids investigate this while working out their personality differences.
My granddaughter is going to love this book! What kid wouldn't with the elements of animal rescue, mystery, and friendship? I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book. I want to find out more about the zorse!
My daughter and I had a lot of fun reading this book. The plot is clever and the characters fun, entertaining, and interesting.
The charm of this story is in the characters. Kelsey, Becca, and Leo are so different from each other, and they only got thrown together by circumstances. But each has his/her strengths (and weaknesses) to bring to the table. An unusual and entertaining dynamic develops among the three, enabling them to develop into a top-notch crime solving team!
Middle grade readers will adore "The Curious Cat Spy Club" series by Linda Joy Singleton. It's a series about three middle school kids, two girls and a boy, who get together in the first book to rescue three kittens they accidentally find abandoned in a plastic bag in a dumpster. These three kids happen to be especially talented, each in a different way, and each of their talents is needed in order to solve the mystery of who abandoned the kittens, and where they came from.
Kelsey Case has been a spy in training for practically her whole life. Ever since she read "Matilda the Spy," she's been practicing picking locks, reading lips, and keeping secrets. She narrates the mysteries, and is a bit jealous of the Sparklers, a group of four best friends who dominate the school social scene. Becca Morales is one of the Sparklers, and she has a pink streak in her black hair, and her signature look is clothing with animal prints. Her mother runs an animal sanctuary, and she is grateful when Kelsey helps her capture her zorse, a horse/zebra named Zed, who escaped while she was taking him to the veterinarian. Leo, the third member of their group, is a brilliant but totally socially awkward boy who, because of his lack of social skills lacks friends. He's thrilled that Kelsey and Becca will hang out with him.
The three rescue the kittens, hide them in a shed on the sanctuary property, and decide to start the club. That's when they notice that there appear to be an unusual number of missing animals in their town. The group joins forces to solve the mystery, with each using his or her own skill to help uncover the truth.
In the second book, "The Mystery of the Zorse's Mask," the trio continues to work on solving mysteries. This one involved Becca's beloved Zed. When someone claiming to be his owner wants to take Zed, suspicions flare. It takes all three of the kids, and some very dangerous actions by Kelsey, to uncover the truth and save the zorse in the end.
The third book is "Kelsey the Spy" and in it Kelsey loses her special notebook, the one where she records all the secrets she keeps. She is worried that if it falls into the wrong hands, all the secrets she has not shared will be exposed and hurt her friends and others. At the same time, the trio of friends works to help an 130-year-old tortoise.
Each book in the series is beautifully written with fabulous characters, authentic dialogue and lots of animals being helped. The messages are extremely appropriate for middle grade readers, the characters each are great role models, and it will make readers long for their own cat, dog, and maybe even a zorse. Because each book ends with a clue about the mystery to be found in the next book, kids will want to read them all one after another. They'd be a fabulous addition to any classroom or school library.
There are five books in the series, and while each book could stand on its own, it's much more fun to start at the beginning. The books are available individually or get the first three in a boxed set.
Lilah and I read this chapter book, the first in a series, over just a couple of days. We had trouble putting it down.
Lilah’s assessment: “Come on! It’s about kids who rescue cats! That’s awesome!”
The narrator, Kelsey, is having a rough time. After her father lost his job, she had to move from her house to an apartment that doesn’t allow pets. So she lost her beloved dog, Handsome. She still gets to visit him at her grandmother’s house, but it isn’t the same. She is a bit obsessed with Becca, one of the popular girls, but Kelsey is more or less invisible. Her path crosses with Becca’s when she helps Becca catch a runaway zorse (from the animal sanctuary Becca helps her mother run) and they hear kittens meowing pathetically from a dumpster. They are unable to open it themselves, and Becca runs for help. The only help she can find is super-nerd Leo Polansky, but he manages to use some physics to pry open the dumpster and rescue the kittens. The three become unlikely friends, caring for the kittens in a disused shed at the animal sanctuary. They decide to find the horrible person who dumped the kittens and raise money for kitten supplies by finding lost pets (and there are a LOT of lost pets in town).
The good: I really liked the emerging friendship between three very different kids who probably would never have even talked to each other without the strange circumstances throwing them together. Their dedication to helping animals was also commendable. Singleton also makes a point of discussing ridiculously lax animal welfare laws (when Kelsey assumes the bad guy will go to jail, Becca explains that the laws mean that isn’t true), which are worth talking about. The group has a really strong sense of justice, and they place the welfare of the animals above their own petty disagreements. The mystery was very well-plotted, and each member of the club contributes in a way fitting to his or her strengths (I especially enjoyed brilliant but socially awkward Leo’s contribution via a drone he builds).
The bad: Really, nothing too bad here. I was afraid that Lilah would be too upset by a person tossing kittens in a dumpster to die to even read past the first chapter, but a reassurance that they were fine kept her going. Kelsey’s obsession with Becca is a little weird, but they become genuine friends. There’s some weird “romance” kind of thing with Becca and Skeet, who bullies Leo. I found Becca’s unwillingness to believe Skeet was a jerk to be unrealistic. I also was perplexed by the way the three pretend not to know each other at school. Sure, they don’t want anyone else to know about the kittens, but couldn’t they at least sit together at lunch? Say hi? Other than these minor quibbles, this was an enjoyable read for both parent and child.

This story is about the three lead characters- Becca, Kelsey and Leo. 3 characters who differ from each other in various aspects but unified through a common motto which they share. ie. Saving/Rescuing the lost pets and providing them a safe haven(Till someone comes to claim/adopt them) The theme of the story is very appealing and it throws light on the various safety concerns of a pet animal and also about the prevalence of pet napping. Might sound silly but it is indeed a serious issue which often goes un-noticed or taken less seriously by us. I once had a pet named Jimmy when I was a kid. I took great care of it just like any other owner would. But months later, it went missing from my house. A dog simply doesn't leave it's master's house all of a sudden...unless forced to. So I know how it feels to be robbed off the pet which you keep it close to your heart. Coming back to the story, Becca,Kesley and Leo discover 3 kittens inside a dumpster. Though all of them never shared much of a mutual bonding with each other, they join hands and vow to take good care of the kittens. That led to formation of the Curious Cat Spy Club (CCSC) . It din't end there. They were more eager in unraveling the mystery behind the dumping of 3 adorable kittens in a dumpster. They get hold of a crucial clue from the dumpster and from there starts their pursuit to catch the person responsible for the cruel act. The 3 curious kids start to chalk up plans to nab the culprit by rounding off the potential suspects. They also discover that a number of pets have been missing from their neighborhood lately. Also, a rift arises between Kinsley and Becca and they soon part ways. What happens to the CCSC afterwards and will they ever lay hands on their suspect ? All these form the rest of the plot.
It's one of the very few books that i found to be cute as well as thrilling. The characterization was lovely. I loved Kinsley's attitude. Despite the fact that her family members, each had their own troubles, it never dampened the high flying spirits of Kinsley. She remained optimistic about her future and moved forward in life. :) The climax was literally nail biting and made me sit upright in bed and read with full focus :D Thoroughly enjoyed reading the book (No wonder I din't even feel the slightest need to sleep. Its 4:00 am now btw :P )
I just finished reading this book for the 2nd time and I LOVE IT! I could go read it again and I wouldn't get tired of it. It is such an intriguing mystery that keeps you at the edge of your seat. I love how the characters are so brave and go on such amazing adventures. I love detective stories and doing those puzzles/riddles that are kind of like solving a case. I just wouldn't go into someones yard or spy, but when I read CCSC I get that experience without even having to read my house, just solving a case in my reading chair. Also, the way it is written is great because you feel like you are Kelsey, experiencing her issues in her life and worrying about the kittens, missing Handsome and Gran Nola, wondering what your dad will do when he finds out you fed the cookies to a zorse, etc. This book is so awesome, I have even had dreams where I was in the CCSC and spying in peoples yards with Leo, Becca, and Kelsey. I really recommend this book to anyone. This book is the perfect combination of adventure, mystery, animals, and a good twist. Keep up the good writing! I can't wait for #3.
The overall idea of the story was cute, but I had some major issues with it. First of all, it was hard for me to get over the fact that Becca's mom let her bring her friends around wild animals unsupervised and that these kids were taking care of month old kittens in a shack instead of trying to find a different shelter or foster home. But those were adult reading a kids book issues. My other big issues were character based. I didn't like that Skeet was semi-redeemed; he was a bully, and while it is important for kids to empathize with why bullies are mean, the way Becca acted with him was too much. I also really just didn't like Kelsey very much; I didn't find her particularly likable, and I wish she had been a little less obsessed with Becca. Overall, this was one of those kids books that I felt is "just for kids" and not enjoyable for adults.
As a fan of Linda Joy's Seer series, I couldn't wait to read the first installment of her new mid-grade Curious Cat Spy Club Series--and she didn't disappoint. She brought the same personal and insightful narratives that I love about her books making me feel each emotional blip in the fretful heart of her main character struggling to fit into her midgrade world. Add a mewing bag of kittens abandoned in a dumpster, and she's off, deftly weaving threads of an exciting mystery just right for the midgrade crowd to unravel. I was hooked from beginning to end. Meow-velous!
The Curious Cat Spy Cat was a fun and engaging read, perfect for a younger middle grade audience. The story centers around three kids who might not normally be friends with each other who form a club with a common goal: to take care of three abandoned kittens and track down who is responsible for tossing them into a dumpster. Kids are sure to love the main themes of this book: friendship, animals, and mystery.
This first book of the series sets up the Curious Cat Spy Club as Kelsey, Becca, and Leo (who are NOT friends at school, thank you very much) must come together to rescue three kittens. In each book, they embark on fun, and sometimes dangerous, sleuthing adventures which always include animals--everything from a 130 year old tortoise to a Zorse. Linda Joy Singleton knows how to craft a unique middle grade series. Think Nancy Drew + The Babysitters Club for animal lovers!
It was an amazing book. I loved it. It was mysterious and fantastic. The story was adventurous. I could barely breathe when Kelsey was stuck in a cage. I was also terrified to know that Kittens could be thrown into garbage bin. I was shocked to know one can petnap ( kidnap )pets. The author Linda Joy had done a very good job writing this. I enjoyed every bit of it. I am giving it a 5/5 .
Kelsey, Becca, and Leo - not friends at school but connected by a desire to care for kittens they rescue from a dumpster - end up forming a club with a mystery on their hands. Will they solve the mystery of all the missing pets? Will they be able to keep the club together through conflict? Find out in this first installment of The Curious Cat Spy Club!
I couldn't put this book down once I started, it is a delightful book that reminds me of some of the books my girls loved when they were littles. The writing was well done and I love the charter and the story line. Over all I would recommend this book to others.
My daughter and I enjoyed this book. It's cute, funny, and the characters are very likable. If you're looking for a read for a middle grader, this is a great add to their TBR list. If you have a 1st /2nd grader, like me, then add this to your TBR list with your little ones.
Linda Joy Singleton's storytelling is reminiscent of the popular Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries. My nine-year-old son loved this book. The characters resonated with him, especially the cats! Ms. Singleton spins a fun mystery with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
I loved the quick action and twists and turns in this story. The characters are age appropriate and relatable. My granddaughter loved it too. A fun read.
My seven-year-old loves this book. I had to hand the baton to my wife because I couldn’t handle any more of it. It started out interesting, but then got weird. Kelsey acts super weird and clingy around Becca, to the point that she seems like she’s in love or at least has an unhealthy obsession with the “cool” girl. And in the end it proves to be a bizarre tribute to codependency. Wait, the cool person wants to be friends of convenience and spurn me in public? Sign me up! Yeah, that’s a great message for preteens. The mystery ended up being several subplots and what with the amateurish prose, I was cringing several times a page. That’s when I knew it was time to cut my losses. I’m sure lots of kids will love this book. I’m not a kid, and I didn’t like it.
I wish I was an 8 year old girl reading this. Detectiving, animals, and friend-making all in one book - with a SECRET club thrown in! This absolutely delightful little book gave me the most pleasurable visit to my childhood for an afternoon.
Recommended to readers of all ages who have ever loved Nancy Drew (or her Notebooks), The Babysitters Club, Secret Seven and Famous Five, and animals of course. 5/5 stars!
This is a cute mystery book for lower-level reader. The premise are 3 children who solve crimes that involve animals. Not much character development and good use of red herrings & cliffhangers @ the end of chapters. I think it is adorable that the author had her own Curious Cat Spy Club (which she writes about in the dedication).
I really liked this book. I liked how it was in Kelsey’s point of view. I also liked how we see Kelsey’s first thoughts on Leo and Becca, and how those thoughts changed. I also liked how they solved the mystery.
