Rate this book
Author's This novel is a second edition of My Sweet Adversary. It has been extensively rewritten, expanded to three times its original length, and re-released under a new title and cover. Readers of the original will discover new scenes, deeper character development, and an enriched story experience.

He stole my father’s heart. I won’t let him steal mine.

Eighteen years ago, he showed up and took what I thought was mine—my father’s attention, his affection, even his praise.

Then he left for college, and I happily got on with my life.

Now he’s back.

As if it’s not bad enough that he’s my new landlord, he’s also moving into the house.

Living under the same roof with my father’s golden child is my worst nightmare.

Worse still? The boy I remember is now a man, with broad shoulders, hazel eyes, and a spark between us I can’t ignore.

The resentment runs deep.

The attraction runs deeper.

Forgiveness feels impossible.

But every stolen glance, every lingering touch, pulls us closer to something I swore I’d never want… him.

This book is part of the Linder Family Series. A standalone story told in dual POV, with chemistry-filled kisses, no bedroom scenes, and a heartwarming HEA.

Keeping the lukewarm romance aside, i just get over the fact that the guy gets everything and the girl is the one that has to adjust, apologise and make space for him, to get together.

Let me explain. H lost his parents and gets sent to foster care. At the age of 14, he gets adopted into a nice family and meets a teacher/ coach that takes him under his wing as the son he never had. That coach has 3 daughters, younger two take a liking to H immediately but the older one that was 6 years old has big feelings about how he's taking her father away from him.

She's a kid, no one bothered to tell her that her feelings are valid, that she's not being replaced. Instead they just keep ignoring her feelings for 20+ years and think she'll just ,,get over it". They actually do go ahead and replace her as well. One of the many things they do is make plans and go out as a 'family' without her. They never tell her or invite her. Their sunday brunches have a standing invite for him and since he's attending them, no one noticed how she's been missing them for weeks. They just keep forgetting her existence and everyone forces her to adjust because he's family.

This was truly one shitty family. I can't imagine being treated like this. They also never apologise for their actions. If it was any other book, hero would be whisking her far away from this toxic family, which is why this was never a romance because he will always pick the family over her. In the end, she's the one apologising to him for all of their childhood. She deserved much better than them and him.

Yes, i understand that he had it hard, he lost his parents and it's not his fault that her family wants him over her but a small acknowledgement over how she was treated for 2+ decades would've been enough but instead he just ignores it all because he's the one benefiting from her suffering. He gets the girl and the family and she gets all the leftover scraps and a constant reminder that she'll never matter.

First off. This was a "Christian romance" that was not labeled as such on Amazon. had I known that I'd have skipped cause we all know this is gonna be misogynistic shit show (spoiler, it was)

We have a MMC who was a teenager who "became best friends" with an adult male teacher at his high school and started coming around all the time for years. Super inappropriate not gonna lie. The teacher is a father to 3 young girls that he clearly looks at as little future breeders for his religion. (Teaching them abstinence until marriage and submission to men YUCK)
The MMC is loved and doted on by everyone in the family except for the oldest daughter who was 6 when he showed up. She was pushed aside at every turn, told she was being a brat and scolded for not immediately being fine with some random, slightly creepy teenage boy rocking up to her house and constantly staring at her and trying to interact with her. Her parents make a point of telling her to get over it and never acknowledge that it was probably a lot for a little girl to feel replaced by the "son they never had" while also being made uncomfortable by this strange boy.
MMC even makes a comment in passing that even though he left for college when she was 10 (TEN YEARS OLD PEOPLE) that she was a "beautiful girl" if she wasn't so "mean", but that he "loves" her anyway and always wanted to have her like him and all this slightly pedo vibes stuff. He sent her cards and letters all the time despite her blatantly telling him to leave her alone. He seemed to struggle with consent. Shocker.

NOW, fast forward FMC's overly controlling father "calls her home" and makes her quit her successful job, sell her house and come work for him in the home town. This is never questioned. She then is tricked into renting a house from the MMC. She's PAYING RENT AND HAS A LEASE... FOR THE WHOLE HOUSE.

Randomly, six months into her lease her dad calls and straight up tells her the MMC is gonna come live with her cause he's the landlord and he should be allowed. The dad tells her to grow up and that he owns it so she needs to suck it up and let him in or move out herself. Despite that being HIGHLY illegal and would break the lease, you know, the SIGNED CONTRACT for the home that she is paying for. Reminder she has spent her entire life having her family choose this man over her. She tells her dad off and is IMMEDIATELY wracked with guilt and is gaslit into apologizing to him for being upset that he is attempting to force his creepy boy onto her, again.

MMC gets back to town and her family just dumps her completely. They have multiple family functions that they exclude her from in favor of the MMC.
This is never acknowledged or apologized for even though she confronts them and tells the family it hurts her. She has literally spent her life being cast aside for this man, while being told she wasnt being cast aside. The Family gaslights her for this guy. After like 3 interactions, where the FMC makes it known its not cool to try and force her to live with MMC, she does not want to interact and that she is still deeply unhappy with how she is treated. MMC starts to lust after our FMC. Making more comments about how he thinks he's always had a thing for her since they met. (SHE WAS FUCKING 6 WHEN YOU MET HER)

And then as the family gaslights and twists things more and more, the FMC is worn down into believing 100% she was the problem and goes on an apology tour, let's MMC live with her and accepts his "affections" (obsession) Tells the MMC how sorry she is for "behavior" as if she wasn't a small child who was belittled for her feelings and cast aside for a strange boy that made her uncomfortable. She also apologizes to her awful parents. No one says sorry to her for cutting her out of the family in favor of MMC, no one says sorry that they failed her, no one acknowledges that she was a very small child that was scared and feeling cast aside and rather than acknowledge that and work with her they called her names, belittled her and left her out of family functions, no one apologizes for forcing her to accept this boy at every function. including her own!!! He crashed her graduation for fucks sake and when she had the "nerve" to stand up for herself her dad yells at her. The mom does try to say she was on the FMC side about forcing her to let MMC live with her but is also so beaten down by the controlling dad that she just didn't say anything to avoid issues.

The MMC, the dad and the family gaslight and steamroll FMC so hard that she rolls over and accepts the MMCs advances and she starts dating him. He goes to the dad and basically tells him they're dating and asks for his permission to pursue her.(SHES 24. SHE DOESNT NEED HER DADS PERMISSION WHAT THE FUCK) The dad alludes to the fact that he purposely groomed his daughter for this very outcome and he was just waiting to wear her down to it. And then they get together for real and live "happily every after."

It was gross, it was misogynistic,, it was sad, it was abusive. All wrapped up with a neat little bow with a sprinkling of "Faith" and a healthy dose of "shame women" thrown in.

Yikes Bro.

I wish I had DNF'D

✅My thoughts:
This was definitely a slow burn clean romance with sweet chemistry between the two main characters.
Can deep feelings be overcome?
Can jealously issues be resolved?
A lovely story about giving forgiveness, figuring out family relationships and discovering love.
When Love Comes Home is part of the Linder Family Series. Each book can be read as a standalone.

This is actually quite a beautiful story - the growth of Katherine and the realisation of her feelings or Adam.
However, I do have a bone to pick… and while I may be off target, the way I interpreted this made me quite frustrated.

Rant incoming….
Katherine felt that Adam was imposing on her relationship with her father, and little comments here and there FULLY support this.
He enters their life and is there all the time (escaping a dismal home life). At times where she might have had quiet time (even just in front of the television), he was there - and his father gave him control of the remote. Admittedly, she actively disliked him - but it would appear that no one took the time to reassure her.

Now… I almost DNF’d after the passage where she APOLOGISED to him for her actions, but not a single person apologised to her for minimising her feelings. She was minimised in favour of him by her family, and the author perpetuated this and made him the ‘good guy’ because he was already into her.

I’m not condoning how she acted, but I am condemning how they minimised her feelings and disregarded what she was saying. Not once did she get an apology for how she was treated - they even went out to breakfast as a ‘family’ with Adam… but she WAS NOT INVITED AND HAD NO IDEA that they had done so. I just wonder how many times she was excluded in favour of him because they thought that she would cause trouble…

Finally, and this is where I realised it’s not an actual full ‘love story’, but is just a story about a man getting his happy ending. (And I just realised how dirty that sounds… whoops!) He asked for her father’s blessing, and had the nerve to say “…I want your blessing because, without it, I can’t be with Katie.” And then said to her that he ‘practically begged him to give his blessing.’ Liar, liar pants on fire.
That sequence just totally screams, I’m in love, and truly, deeply want to be with you forever, right??? Pfftt… I was so close to the end, I figured I might as well finish it off, but I’m not happy…

That being said, I did enjoy the story, BUT I just wish they didn’t have to make the female lead smaller to resolve their issues.
Objectively, the writing was great, and the author has skill, but my personal take on the actions of the characters makes me want to rate low because I truly hate how the heroine is treated. However, I honestly can’t do that, as this is my personal views - if I didn’t have this issue, it would easily be a 5 star read!.

This novel is a heartfelt and rich romance. It blends slow-burn tension with deep character development.

Mari Hernan crafts a fascinating story of reconnection between Adam and Katie, two people with a shared, complicated history and unresolved feelings.

She handles the enemies-to-lovers and forced-proximity tropes with refreshing depth, avoiding clichés in favour of authentic emotional growth.

The writing is warm, immersive, and emotional as she “shows” rather than “tells” her characters’ growth and longing.

With a familial backdrop and small-town charm, the story has a strong sense of place and heart.

However, some pacing in the middle feels repetitive, and secondary characters, while genial, could benefit from more dimension.

Overall, When Love Comes Home is a satisfying read.

Fans of clean, character-driven romance will find much to love in this tender, introspective journey of forgiveness, belonging, and love rediscovered.

Another Great Book by Mari Hernan!

Another Great Book by Mari Hernan! When Love Comes Home:A sweet enemies to lovers romance was the perfect book to share the love story of Katie and Adam! Several of the characters were already well developed from the previous book in the Linder Family series. Jon and Sharon’s love story grew with the addition of their three daughters. Adam came into the picture as a youth when Jon served as his coach and mentor. Katie resented the relationship her father and Adam developed and it took years for them to find each other. This was such a sweet love story and I truly appreciated the character shown by Adam when he realized his love for Katie. Katie took a while to come around to the realization that there was more to Adam than she realized. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

Is a sweet enemies to lovers, age gap romance with no cliffhanger.
Some of the lines I really like --- "The universe doesn’t revolve around you, Sis. It revolves around me!" --- "I'm not the fourteen-year-old foster kid your father introduced you to. I don't need you to offer me a place to stay, or a free meal, or—your pity." --- The man must have a master’s in kissing. No, wait—a PhD. ---
What's Jon up to? What's Loren up to? What's Sheri up to? These and other questions will all be answered.
I loved Katherine and Adam's story and I'm sure you will too. This is the book of hers that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last.

Wow- I read a couple other reviews before writing mine- just wow. Katie was a brat, she was threatened by the foster kid (Adam) that she thought her father was replacing her with. No, her family didn't gaslight her- they spent her entire life reassuring her that her parents loved her more than anything. Anyone that has a kid knows how hard it is to get a kid to be reasonable when they are stuck on something. Katie finally gives a little and sees what a wonderful man Adam is. This is a sweet story with lessons to be learned- don't miss out on this book because of a couple of haters. I loved the book and stayed up reading until the end.

What do you do when a stranger takes your fathers attention away from you? As a young girl, Katherine decides to ostracise Adam as much as she is physically able to. Yet years later and no communication since her graduation, she is rescued from a predicament by the same person. Why did none of her other sisters have the same reaction while growing up? Jealousy is an emotion that should have been addressed, but I think she just needed a comforting and reassuring talk to. However had this happened, we would not have had this story.
Mari Hernan holds me so gently in the palm of her had with this series, I just had to get my hands on book 3. Thank goodness there are still a few after that.

This is a sweet love story. Katherine has always disliked the man that her father Jon took under his wing. Adam was an orphan, raised in the foster care system, and Jon was always there for him. Adam was loved by the family, except for Katherine. She felt that Adam took away her father. When she moved back to her hometown, she was renting a home that she loved. Turns out that it belonged to Adam. As she continued ignore him, she came to realize that she was wrong.
Such a sweet, clean romance. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Booksprout, and this is my honest review.

Mari Hernan has written a sweet , heartwarming romance story.
Adam and Katie Story is one with a past history , that emerged into their future.
Readers will experience so many emotions, through the author’s description, bringing characters to the forefront, and off the page into your heart.

“She took the flowers before fixing her gaze on me.
“Look Adam”she began with a sign, her tone dismissive .I don’t mean to be rude ,but really , what are you doing here?”

This book held me captive. I wanted to know why Katherine had such a hatred for Adam. What had he done in the past to cause it. I won’t tell you; you will need to read the book yourself, but that really isn’t a punishment. You will get romance, hatred, humor, and a few surprises. I enjoyed this story.

While I did enjoy When Love Comes Home, I was concerned with a few aspects of the story.
The main, female character, Katherine, is 6 years old when she meets 14 year old Adam. She instantly dislikes him because she fears he’ll take her father away from her.
A foster kid who lost his parents as a toddler, Adam is more than happy to let his football coach take him into his family. Katherine is hostile towards Adam but her family invites him to every family event, anyway. They belittle her feelings and push her concerns aside. Then, once they’re grown, Katherine’s dad tricks her into being housemates with Adam.
I understand where the author was trying to go with the plot but it really bothered me. It’s obvious that the dad was trying to get Katherine and Adam to get to know each other better. His goal being that Katherine would finally accept him if she let herself. I just thought that was going a bit overboard.
Otherwise, I liked the characters and the writing style, and would probably read this author again.
