A Star Is Reborn: The Most Filmed Hollywood Story of Love Found and Lost

Rate this book
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 classic film version starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, a riveting, juicy exploration of the history and popularity of Hollywood’s favorite story about itself, from its 1937 technicolor drama starring Janet Gaynor and the 1954 version with Judy Garland, through 2018’s blockbuster Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper remake.

A Star is Born is one of the most popular entertainment legends of all time—the story of a fading male star who falls in love with an ingénue whose fame quickly eclipses his own. It’s been a showcase for some of the most talented female artists of their time—Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Lady Gaga—yet it is also a fascinating rumination on the nature of fame and the fragility of the male ego.

Now, Robert Hofler offers a riveting behind-the-scenes journey through the movie’s history, starting with 1932’s What Price Hollywood?, based on the rocky real-life Hollywood marriage of silent movie star Colleen Moore and producer John McCormick. That storyline was reworked by producer David O. Selznick into 1937’s A Star is Born, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in the first of four versions.

From Cary Grant’s refusal to star opposite Judy Garland due to her substance abuse (a problem that would cause the 1954 musical to go wildly over-schedule) to attempts to woo Elvis Presley to star in the 1976 blockbuster that eventually paired Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, How a Star is Reborn delves into the juicy tales behind the scenes. Hofler also traces the evolution of the story itself, as successive versions pivoted away from Hollywood and towards the world of rock music, culminating in 2018’s wildly successful Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga remake.

Captivating and superbly researched, How a Star is Reborn combines shrewd insights, little-known details, and Hofler’s storytelling flair in this must-read for every fan of modern cinema.

I have no idea how the author always acquires/shares insider information, but how lucky for his readers that we have him as a source. You'll read zero criticism with this review. As soon as I saw this book offered, I hoped that I'd have the opportunity to read it. I purchased 2 of his previous books (2023's The Way We Were & one on Rock Hudson from 2009) so I knew readers were in for a treat.

No matter if you have never seen any of The Star Is Born films or if you have seen just one or you watch them on repeat like myself, this book is worth your time. I felt like I knew a fair amount about the 1976 version from reading books on Barbara Streisand, but the behind-the-scenes is rarely shared like the author does here. I also have played the piano all my life & I still have my sheet music from the 1976 & 2018 versions. I knew very little about how the music shaped each film & performer.

Sometimes that back story of how a film is created & produced is as interesting as the movie itself. For each of the 4 versions, you are going to learn about the false starts, the squabbles & how each of the cast really conducted themselves. Sometimes hearing who didn't accept a part or was passed over is better than the reality.

I'm extremely grateful that Robert Hofler "gets it" & knows what his readers need to hear & read. I read this book in 2 days. I will not only be purchasing a copy, but also purchasing additional copies for several Friends who also love how this film has adapted through the decades.

I thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair & honest review.

Hollywood in its current state may be veering towards extinction, so reading about a 'franchise' of remakes proved a great chronology of how Hollywood operated at various stages and how, stories about Hollywood, told by Hollywood, can make us sit down and take notice.

Hofler is a skilled writer who transforms the trivia-led reiterations of A Star Is Born into a peppy tale. A lot of this book was a natural 5, however, I was surprised at how much focus Hofler put on the final version. In some ways it makes sense, although the second and third (really great segments) films could have been fleshed out a little more. In general, it gets a 4 for being a great mix of gossipy tell-all mixed with a cultural edge for each version - beginning all the way with the deliciously titled What Price Hollywood?

We lost the famous "the biggest robbery since Brink's" quote, as well as (to my mind, a great shock) the absence of the article from the director of the third A Star is Born, Pierson. With the Gaga section, however, we have a lot of detail on technique and the making-of.

The chapter about how the films fused together Garland, Gaga and Streisand, as well as trailblazer Gaynor was inciteful and measured. Really through, it's worth mentioning just how objectively awful Streisand was in this book's coup de grace to Streisand's beleaguered legacy as a misunderstood diva. Really, just a very self-involved person.

Hollywood glitz and heartbreak come alive in A Star Is Reborn.
Robert Hofler takes readers on a dazzling, behind-the-scenes journey through the making and remaking of one of cinema’s most enduring love stories. I loved the mix of juicy anecdotes and meticulous research, though at times the depth of detail can feel a little overwhelming.

From legendary stars to the shifting studios, Hofler paints vivid portraits of ambition, romance, and the price of fame. The book’s mix of storytelling and historical context makes it feel both informative and cinematic.
Perfect for film buffs, classic Hollywood fans, or anyone fascinated by the magic and mess of movie-making.

I received this book via NetGalley.

This is a must-read for any fans of ANY version of A Star is Born, including those (like me) who love What Price Hollywood?

It delves into the inspiration behind the story, (I had no idea Colleen Moore and her husband inspired Adela Rogers St Johns to write the story) and adaptation process of each version. I thought the comparison to the Newman/Woodward documentary was apt and a good way to round out this investigation into the various versions of A Star is Born.

I don’t know why I read this. Hofler is a crummy writer. And he really has a problem with Barbra Streisand! After reading his book on the making of “The Way We Were” a couple of years ago, I should have known what to expect with this one. My bad.

Aside from the section on the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga version, the rest of the book takes material from other written works and pastes it together. I found nothing original in this.

Looking for coherent writing? Don’t waste your time. You won’t find it in this book. Hate Streisand? Here ya go.
What dreck.

I was really excited to read it since I'm a huge fan of the '76 movie. I looked forward to finding out more about all of the movies, but was unprepared for just how exhaustive the research/info would be. In my opinion, I don't think we needed to know about every single, little, nit-picking detail; in fact, I think it slowed the book down. I'm glad I read the book but would not keep it to read again.

Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy!

A deep dive into the enduring Hollywood story of "A Star is Born", detailing the various versions...my favorite is the 1976 one. Kristofferson's John Norman breaks my heart every time!

Interesting for the behind the scenes info and trivia, but the writing could have been tighter...lots of repetitive passages.

A cascading (and surprising) journey through mostly old Hollywood, veering from the 4 Star is Born movies to all sorts of Hollywood trivia, much of which I didn't know. A feast for an old movie buff like me.

A STAR IS REBORN - My third book on hollywood, this year, and one I actually liked. This book dove into the scripts and workings of making a movie including why some things worked and others didn't. I may have see the two 1930s movies decades ago, but I did see the Garland and Kristofferson (because of K.K.) remakes. As much as I dislike Garland even more than Babs, Garland's remake was the best of the two, not that I ever want to see either remake again. The chapters on the Gaga/Cooper remake made me change my mind about seeing this unknown remake (to me), I'm curious now. Well written, interesting, and entertaining. ✨ The Vibes ✨
A primer on one of the most enduring stories in Hollywood

📖 Read if…
✨ You see all the best Picture nominees each year
✨ You love all things ‘Old Hollywood’
✨ You’re interested in exploring how portrayals of gender roles in film have changed over the past 70+ years

A Star Is Born is one of the most enduring stories in entertainment, a story that touches on fame, gender roles, and romance. The most recent reboot with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga brought new attention to the story, but the themes remain the same, and A Star is Reborn (a clever title) unpacks why these films have captivated generations. I enjoyed the explainer on the roots of the franchise, as well as the details around the production of the 2018 reboot (it was originally supposed to star Beyonce!), but overall found myself to be a bit underwhelmed by this book.

I usually love nonfiction focused on topics around film, but this one was tough to read. There were parts that felt very repetitive, but also sections that felt a bit vague which made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the writing. I found myself doing a lot of Googling while reading, which is usually a good thing as I’m finding topics I want to research further, but in this case the searches were more for clarity than curiosity. Because of this, I’d definitely only recommend this to hardcore cinephiles or superfans of A Star Is Born.

A Star is Reborn is out now. Thanks to Citadel and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
