Substitute Teacher Piper Caveneau is all about making sure her students succeed—even if she has to bench the entire Heritage Football team. And of course she’ll stand up to the school’s new football coach. Even if he, inconveniently, happens to be the charming man who rescued her on her first night in town.
But being a teacher is her calling—and a fulltime position in Heritage is her dream and she’ll do whatever it takes to finally call this small town home.
Former NFL player Titus Ford can’t believe he’s back in the tiny, cramped town of Heritage, Michigan—but a guy has to do something while he’s trying to recover, so sure, he’ll coach his former high school team. Titus doesn’t have time for distractions—especially not the fiery new English teacher who’s derailed his season by failing his players.
When Piper suggests tutoring for his kids, he’s willing to give it a chance. He has no idea that one yes might lead to the life he never thought he wanted. And Piper just might find the home she longs for.
But when a prestigious coaching job comes calling…and Piper’s dreams go up in smoke, maybe Heritage wasn’t their happy ending after all.
Home to Heritage Book 1: You're the Reason Book 2: Here With Me Book 3: Christmas With You Book 4: Playing for Keeps Book 5: Under the Mistletoe
I enjoyed this charming story about a substitute teacher and a football coach who learn to set aside their differences, work together, and focus on the students.
The focus of this book was on repairing broken pieces.
It was good to read about a character facing some of the same challenges I faced in my career. It was easy to put myself in her shoes; I could understand her frustration, but I could also see the bigger picture. Piper Caveneau couldn’t rein in her disgruntled students until she learned to meet them where they were at - there’s good advice for us all in that! When she gave of herself (time and effort), the students stepped up to the plate and Piper didn’t have to compromise her values.
Titus Ford was also struggling with broken pieces of his family, his career, and his football team. Repairing team dynamics was essential to success.
The authors tied these two threads together with a spotlight on God putting the broken pieces of our lives together and how this faith requires our trust.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Gotta love the geeky heroine with glasses. Piper is a substitute English teacher and making her students, include the football players, earn their grades. She's definitely not winning a popularity contest.
Interim football coach Titus only plans to be in Heritage, Michigan for a season and then return to the NFL. He and Piper have sparks of attraction but also conflicts.
What I loved the most (other than Otis of course) is the character growth of both Piper and Titus and the time and love they poured into the high school students.
I look forward to reading the next in the series. My gratitude to publisher Sunrise for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
I absotootilootly love going home to Heritage! I love the scenery, I love the people, and I especially love Otis (IYKYK)!
And now I love Piper and Titus! He’s a football player who’s recovering from a serious knee injury, and she’s a long term substitute English teacher. Both have baggage—don’t we all!—and both are searching for a home to belong.
We quickly find out that the football team is a disorganized mess and that the previous English teacher has been just going along to get along. When Piper actually takes the education of her students seriously, Coach Titus comes at her like a bull who’s seen red.
And let the misunderstandings begin and the sparks start flying. There’s heartbreak and healing in Heritage, and both are in abundance for these two adorable people.
Old friends show up and new friends are made. And Otis is ever faithful (again, IYKYK). I can hardly wait to go back again—I’d live there if I could!
I received an advance copy of the book from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Highly recommend!
It's wonderful to be back in Heritage. It's like going to my special place for vacation every time I visit. Piper and Titus were adorable and super fun to get to know. I loved Piper's stubborn optimism and belief in her students. Titus' tender and compassionate soul contrasted against his image as an NFL star trailed by rumors. They started out as adversaries due to misunderstandings but progressed to friends with a common goal. Watching Titus' high school football team come together as a band of brothers was a heart-warming experience. Both Piper and Titus's past failures haunted them but they learned to depend on God's sovereign grace and mercy. I loved catching up with all the characters from the previous Heritage novels and can't wait to read the next book about Piper's roommate.
If you love small-town heart-warming romance, you will love this book. If you've never read a Heritage novel, you really need to pick one up soon! I received a complimentary copy courtesy of the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
This is a sweet, Christian contemporary romance. We return to small town Heritage, Michigan, with a former NFL player and a substitute teacher. We’re reeled in with a “break in” meet cute that soon turns into an enemies to sweethearts trope as Piper starts benching Titus’ players for academic ineligibility. As Titus struggles to get his team to work together - both on and off the field, he and Piper slowly start to work on projects together. They quickly ease down their walls and have a sweet romance. This romance has family, friends, faith, and more. It was an enjoyable read. This is a just kisses romance, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Beautiful contemporary romance! It takes a lot to impress me with a modern-day love story but this book did it. The storytelling is engaging, inspiring and romantic. The main characters, Titus and Piper, are deeply good people and it was delightful reading their journey together. They have Great Chemistry!
I received an early copy of this story. A positive review was not required but was my pleasure.
This book was different than I expected. From the blurb, I thought it would be the usual 'clashing teacher v sports coach' kind of story - and on the surface it was - but it went so much deeper, touching on issues like failure, the impact and grief of losing a parent, kids trying to live up to their parents' expectations, parents breaking their kids' trust, cancer, school struggles, loss of dreams, etc.
The romance was really sweet, and I loved the different characters and how they grew though the story, to the point that I almost cried in one of the ending scenes (I'm such a sucker for a big turnaround!). While at times it felt like one issue after another was being thrown at me, I liked how the author pulled it all together and showed hope and the difference people/teachers/coaches who care can make in a person's life. Pretty inspirational.
Many thanks to the author and publisher for gifting me an early copy to read. All thoughts are my own.
Heritage is one of my favorite bookish towns. I have enjoyed every story set here so far and this story was sweet. It's definitely one of my favorite visits. The football elements and the autumn setting thrilled my football/autumn loving heart. Piper and Tucker were great and their growth in the story was really well written. I ended up highlighting several quotes as I read this one that were nuggets of truth I want to remember. I read an ARC of this one, but I will be planning to order a paperback copy for annotating and my keeper shelf for sure!
I received an ARC of this book and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Sweet, emotionally engaging, timely, and a joy to read. It was funny and sad by turns, as a story about kids and their teachers should be. I can totally imagine my friends-who-are-lawyers-now from high school in a role similar to Piper Cavaneau's bar raising substitute teacher. I also have a distant cousin whose story would sound a lot like Titus Ford's character. I expected fireworks! As each teacher asks more questions about their students, their goals turn out to be more aligned than they expected. HEA turns out to be right at their fingertips as each character decides to come Home to Heritage. I jumped into the middle of this series with this book and was so pleased to do so. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Playing for Keeps is the perfect fall cozy read. With all the ideal makings for hallmark vibes, small town, substitute teacher meets football coach, and so much more. If you like a good Hallmark movie, this is the book for you. This is the first book I have read written by Andrea Michelle Wood. It is the fourth book in the Home to Heritage series,
The setting is great. Set in Heritage, MI, it is just a small town that builds on itself and characters throughout the story. The storyline was great. Titus is trying to figure out his future after the U-turn his life made when his football career came crashing down due to an injury. With the hope of recovery, he has returned home to coach the local high school football team. When another injury has taken his dreams off the table, he is trying to figure out what to do. Piper comes to town to be a substitute teacher. She is here to help, but everyone seems to see her as the bad guy. When Piper and Titus keep coming head-to-head and being put together, they soon find themselves becoming more than enemies and more than friends.
The character development was great. Titus has many layers to him. Pulling back some of his past and seeing him help his football kids really gave him some more dimension. Piper also has some issues to deal with. Seeing her work through those and truly helping the kids she is teaching was so touching. I loved getting to see her heart.
The enemies-to-lovers romance is perfection, a sweet and kisses-only romance. This meet-cute is perfect.
Andrea Michelle Wood did a good job of intertwining faith throughout the entire novel, learning to trust in Him and let go of control.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
Playing for keeps started with a great first meeting which was fun and showed the chemistry between Piper and Titus, but soon after they turned into enemies.
It was fun to see the true heart of Piper and Titus through their fighting. Both wanted the best for the students, the one academically and the one on the football field and to find a midway point caused for a lot of tension and fun fighting scenes.
Through the challenges and battles to where each one tries to stand on his or her point and get the advantage, they learn to see the best in the other and even learn to support each other in their goals.
There were a lot of great scenes I enjoyed in this book, between Piper and Titus, between Piper and her Christian roommates who slowly guided her to find her trust in God, between Titus and Nathan who also played a big role in Titus' quest for his new path. But the scenes I enjoyed the most were between Piper and Titus and the kids they really impacted.
Another great book in this series.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
This was a very emotional and touching story of small town life and second chances. Our two main characters learn that sometimes our plans are interrupted or life's trajectory is changed, and we think everything is lost. Piper and Titus learn that God always has a plan, if they will get out of the way and let Him work in their lives and quit trying to do it on their own.
Piper Caveneau is a long term sub at the local high school. She takes teaching very seriously. She wants her students to not only learn the subject matter they are being taught, but she also wants them to be responsible for their actions, or inactions at times. When this means that some of the star football players have to be benched for their grades, she realizes she has stirred up a hornet's nest with the man she met when she arrived in town.
Titus Ford is a former NFL player who has been sidelined due to a knee injury. He has high hopes of returning to the NFL and has no plans to stay in his small hometown. He is biding his time during his rehabilitation period as the football coach at his alma mater in Heritage, Michigan. However, he takes football and winning very seriously.
Both Piper and Titus have some issues they need to individually work on. They both have wonderful hearts, but working together is easier said than done when you disagree on everything. I loved both of these characters. They did truly care about the students. They were polar opposites. She was the brainy, super organized teacher, and he was the brawny (yet intelligent) guy who thrived on chaos and wanted to win football games. Don't get me wrong. He was not shallow. He just wanted his players to experience true victory in their games and their lives.
This wonderful story was such a blessing to my heart. I love to see adults pouring their knowledge and love into youth. As a side note, I really enjoyed the opening scene when Piper and Titus initially meet. I had a good belly laugh at that scene. This was one of those books that left with a warm feeling in my heart and reestablished my faith in humanity.
Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Piper Caveneau takes her position as a long-term substitute teacher seriously. Despite having a temporary role she works hard to ensure ALL of her English courses not only meet scholastic standards but challenge her students academically. But when members of the football team fail to maintain their grades, she does not hesitate to put them on academic probation.
Titus Ford never expected his NFL career to be sidelined by an injury. With his career hanging in the balance, he agrees to be the interim football coach for his former high school. But his plans for a winning season are threatened when he learns his starting quarterback is benched.
Will Piper and Titus be able to come together for the betterment of their students, or will their opposing goals stand in their way?
Heritage, Michigan is synonymous with small-town charm and understated love stories. Playing for Keeps marks the fourth book in the Home for Heritage Series. This interconnected series was born from the Restoring Heritage Series (Tari Faris). However, each of the books in this series were written as standalone novels and can be read as such.
Andrea Michelle Wood’s writing style effortlessly blends into this multi-author series. In addition, she does a terrific job infusing Piper and Titus’ story with so much heart. Both main characters faced what appeared to be insurmountable obstacles. They had specific ideas for how they saw their lives playing out. But when those plans were derailed, they had to learn to surrender their futures. Thankfully, it was when they opened their lives to be used however the Lord saw fit that they were able to make a lasting impact on the next generation.
Be sure to read for: -Adorable Meet Cute -Opposites Attract -Forced Proximity -Overarching Themes of Faith
Special thanks to Sunrise Publishing, Susan May Warren, Tari Faris, and Andrea Michelle Wood for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved reading Hometown USA stories, and Heritage MI definitely fits the bill! Piper is a substitute teacher, but quickly finds herself making enemies at all turns, including the football coach and his players, who never expected they would actually have to work to earn their good grades... The football coach, Titus, quickly became an important part of this story. Initially, he and Piper butted heads...he wanted his players to play, no matter what, and she was determined to make them work for their grades, and not just hand them over to entitle players. (Yes, they both have valid backstories, and reading these made it all make a lot more sense) I loved watching them get to know each other, and see their relationship progress from....enemies... to....?! :) If you are looking for a sweet romance, then be sure and read this book! (This book can definitely be read as a stand alone....I have read Tari Faris' books on Heritage, but not this latest spin-off series, and I still was able to fully enjoy the story) Disclaimer: I receive complimentary books from various sources, including, publishers, publicists, authors, and/or NetGalley. Playing For Keeps was my first book in the Heritage series and now I want to binge the rest of them.
Piper Caveneau takes a temporary teaching position in Heritage after she loses her previous job for refusing to change a student’s grade. Piper wants nothing more than to see all of her students succeed even if it makes her the least liked teacher in Heritage.
Titus Ford was a professional NFL player until he suffered from a career ending injury. Titus heads back to Heritage to take a temporary job coaching high school football with the hopes of someday returning to the field.
When Titus comes to Piper’s rescue sparks fly. When they meet again, there are sparks of a different kind. Pepper refuses to hold Titus’s team to lower standards than the rest of her students even if it means they lose playing eligibility. As their undeniable attraction continues to grow, they both win need to reevaluate what God wants for their futures.
I really enjoyed Titus and Piper’s story. I connected with Piper over her trust issues and with Titus over his desire to control his future. I strongly recommend this book.
I received an arc of this book from the publisher with no expectation a positive review.
Another heartwarming small-town story in a favorite location: Heritage, Michigan. This author fits right in with the other books penned by Tari Faris. Welcome back to the close-knit community with the town mascot, Otis the metal Hippo. People still cannot figure out how he moves from place to place. Starting out with a meet-cute with witty banter, it quickly turns into enemies, coach Titus and substitute teacher Piper, clashing in the highschool over footbal player’s eligibility because of failing grades. Soon, the rivals become allies and a bit more, when they join together to do what is best for the football team and individual players. I liked the theme of puzzle pieces being lost, found and fitting into their proper places. I especially liked that the community always comes together to help a newcomer and worthy causes. Faith is evident in the main characters and although there are challenges along the way, God and His leading is the ultimate focus. I am delighted once again to visit Heritage and look forward to the next book, a Christmas setting! *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Sunrise Publishing on behalf of the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.*
Wow. If I could give Playing for Keeps more than 5 stars, I absolutely would. This book hooked me from page one and never let go—I didn’t want it to end.
Substitute teacher Piper Caveneau and former NFL star Titus Ford might have started as adversaries (benching the whole football team will do that ), but their story unfolded into something tender, faith-filled, and deeply moving. Their banter was sharp, their growth was beautiful, and their romance? The kind that makes you cheer from the sidelines.
This debut from Andrea Michelle Wood blew me away—she writes with the heart and skill of a seasoned author. I loved the themes of snap judgments, grace, and seeing beyond the surface of someone’s journey. It’s a powerful reminder that while grace is easy to receive, it’s harder to extend—and yet so necessary.
Titus and Piper were the perfect balance for each other: strong, flawed, and vulnerable in ways that made me root for them every step of the way. Their journeys of healing and faith intertwined seamlessly with the sweet, swoony romance and the small-town Heritage charm I adore. Honestly, this might just be my favorite Home to Heritage book yet.
Key Takeaway: This story isn’t just about football and romance—it’s about grace, growth, and finding home in the most unexpected places.
What could be better than a return visit to Heritage, Michigan? How about a visit during football season? I loved the hilarious first meeting between a substitute teacher and the football coach, but it didn't take long for their initial attraction to cool! How dare a teacher allow a football player's grades to interfere with his playing in an important game?
I loved this return to one of my favorite fictional places, the chance to catch up with all of the residents, and an opportunity to meet some intriguing newcomers. Playing for Keeps was filled with heartwarming interactions between Piper and her students, Titus and his players, and the townspeople who were there to cheer both of them on. Could they overcome their past hurts and build a new future in Heritage? Would they find a way to work together?
This is an engaging story with well-developed characters and an inspiring message of hope and faith. I thoroughly enjoyed this second-chance story from new-to-me author, Andrea Michelle Wood!
I received a complimentary copy from Sunrise Publishing and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
"He's not finished with you yet. It's hard to trust that God is working when you're slogging through challenges, but He always has a plan to bring you through the storm."
Piper is a teacher hoping to someday get a full-time position as she is just subbing. Will her expectations help her or cause others to despise her? Will she ever learn to trust God?
Titus is a football player...former, now he is a coach. Struggling to find where it is that God wants him to be and to hopefully fulfill his dreams. Will the trials in life show him the way God wills?
"Playing for Keeps," by Andrea Michelle Wood is a cute romance story that is filled with everyday trials and adventures that we may go through and how those can either bring us closer to Him and learn to trust Him or drive us further away in our pride and stubbornness. I recommend this book and enjoyed it from the beginning to end.
Meeting people where they are at so you can move forward. Titus, the football coach needs to pull his team together and Piper, the substitute English teacher needs to meet her students where they are at so they can pass the class. There is a great meet cute at the beginning of the story but then their relationship turns into somewhat frienemies. I felt like I was reading a high school romance where the couple couldn't get along and always took things the wrong way. The parts of the story where they were helping the students to get beyond where they were at and see that they were worth something was really good. The thing I like about Heritage is that the people there are a family/community, they will help you with whatever the problem is to see what God truly wants for you. Otis is always a favorite too. I like that the story covered a lot of the issues that teens are truly going through in their lives and tried to help them work through it.
I loved the latest novel in the Home to Heritage series. Piper is so adorable, with her quirks and determination, while Titus is the hometown football hero. There is an overarching small town belonging tug-of-war, that is so heartwarming.
The moment when Piper and Titus meet is certainly memorable, and it perfectly sets the scene for their ensuing story. I really liked how community-focused this story is with Titus's coaching and Piper's tutoring. These teenagers were so fun to see and added a sweet extra layer to the overall story.
If you enjoy sweet small-town Christian romance with fabulous teenagers, a wonderful small-town community and a heartwarming feeling then I'm sure you'll enjoy Playing for Keeps.

Playing for Keeps by Andrea Michelle Wood, Tari Faris, and Susan May Warren is book 4 in the Home to Heritage series. Heritage is the loveliest small town. Readers of Debbie Macomber and fans of Hallmark movies will adore the small town of of Heritage. This book can be read as a standalone novel, but why would you miss the first books? I have adored this entire series. In this series, an unlikely romance develops between a strict new high school teacher and the football coach. While I loved the romance between them, I think my favorite part was the positive roles of the characters in the lives of the high school students. There was so much to love about this book, including themes of redemption and purpose and meaning. I cannot recommend this book enough. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
This was a sweet, adorable read. I enjoyed Piper and Titus's meet-cute at the beginning of the story. Things took a turn and they butted heads when it came to Piper failing Titus's football players in her English class . As the story continues, readers discover Piper's intentions for why she had to, but with that comes compromises and a new understanding. A former NFL player, Titus has his hands full coaching his former high school's football team. In order to do so, the players have a lot to learn both on field and off field. The characters were well-written, I enjoyed the chemistry between Titus and Piper, the plot was interesting, and the storyline was engaging. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Andrea Michelle Wood has given us a sweet romance between a cautious teacher, desperately trying to help the kids she loves while protecting her heart, and an injured pro football player rushing to recover and return to his beloved game. Their story shows how God can take our broken pieces, our shattered dreams, our suffering, and make something even more beautiful than we’d hoped for.
One of my favorite quotes: “God could have spared Jesus from suffering. He was beaten and taunted and crucified. But if God had spared Him, it would have deprived the whole world of hope. You’ve got to have faith that God isn’t finished with your picture yet but that it’s coming together.”
Each book in the Home to Heritage series has me falling more in love. In Playing for Keeps, we have all the pieces of an outstanding story: romance, tension, past hurts, and the promise of restoration. Truly, Andrea Michelle Wood did a remarkable job of creating a novel that not only held your attention from start to finish, but also inspired hope and God given purpose. This story is relevant, honest, and poignant, an absolute delight.
I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. I know I will not be disappointed.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
I'm always happy to return to Heritage, Michigan! I enjoyed this story of a injured NFL player, Titus, who is coaching football at the local high school and Piper, a substitute English teacher. The two met when Piper locked herself out of her house and was rescued by Titus. Things don't go so well when they meet the next time because Piper is failing a dozen members of the football team! You will love how Titus and Piper end up working together with the team and how Otis, the hippo from previous books, makes a couple of appearances! I received a complimentary e-book from Sunrise Publishing. This is my honest opinion.
This story is well written and flows smoothly. The characters feel authentic, and the Christian themes are present without being overbearing. Titus and Piper balanced each other well, allowing their individual strengths and weaknesses to shine. Their journeys of recovery and belief were woven together with a romance that unfolded in a quaint small-town setting. This story is about football, romance, personal growth, and discovering a sense of home in unlikely places. The romance was both believable and charming, and I appreciated the character development throughout the story. I received an advance review copy courtesy of Sunrise Publishing. This is my honest, voluntary review.
This is book 4 of the series but can easily be read as a stand alone. While there is a fun meet cute in this book, Piper and Titus do not get along. In fact they are at odds with each other almost from the start. Titus, in injured former football player, is back home and coaching his high school football team. Not exactly what his plans were for his future. Piper is a substitute teacher and has a heart for her students. She believes education is important. Definitely more important than sports. I love the small town described in this book. I would enjoy life in Heritage. Small town life brings Titus and Piper together again and again. And due to that they need to figure out how to not butt heads over and over again. I enjoyed the growth that both characters do in this book. I have not read some of the others in the series but this book has me checking into getting them read soon. Definitely recommend to anyone that loves a small town book with characters you want to have as friends. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is my first time reading a Heritage book and I must go back and read the other books! I loved reading about the Little Sable Lighthouse and Ludington, both places that I'm extremely fond of.
The relationship between Titus and Piper was so interesting to watch it grow and develop. I'm a huge fan of football, which definitely made Titus an enjoyable character. I loved how Piper cared so much about her students even despite not being their favorite teacher.
Thanks to Sunrise Publishing for the arc. The opinions are my own.
This is the fourth Home to Heritage book. You don’t have to have read the first books but it does help to have read the original Restoring Heritage books, as several of the main characters show up here. The two main characters have both had their dreams crash and burn, ending up in Heritage to figure out the way forward. There’s attraction, clashes, frustration, hope, and learning that God really does care about what happens to them. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
