THE RESILIENT MUSICIAN: HARNESSING THE POWER OF RESILIENCE THROUGH THE LENS OF MUSIC

Rate this book
What do you do when the music stops?
When a string of unexpected blows - from dishonest promoters to the shutdown of an entire industry - brought Gordy Marshall’s career to a dead halt, the life he’d built over decades disappeared almost overnight. One moment he was touring the world as the drummer with The Moody Blues, leading his own successful shows, and running creative projects as an entrepreneur; the next, he was selling his home and driving for Uber just to stay afloat.
But Gordy Marshall has never been just a drummer.
He’s a creator, a builder, an author - and a man who understands that reinvention is a skill. Guided by the belief that “it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you deal with it,” he fought his way back, step by step, rebuilding a career that had vanished in a single moment.
The Resilient Harnessing the Power of Resilience Through the Lens of Music tells the raw, funny, and unvarnished truth of how he did it - from losing almost everything, to finding his way back into professional music through depping in West End shows like Wicked and Hamilton, rekindling his creative spark, and rebuilding his band, career, and identity from the ground up.
This isn’t just a memoir, it’s a survival blueprint for creatives, performers, freelancers, and anyone whose life has ever been turned upside down.
Inside, you’ll

Hard-earned strategies for rebuilding confidence, income, stability, and purpose after sudden disruptionPractical insights into mental strength, adaptability, resilience, and the discipline of reinventionA front-row look at returning to the craft - from depping in major West End pits to relaunching bands, projects, and creative venturesTold with humour, honesty, and the perspective of someone who’s lived through both standing ovations and rock bottom, The Resilient Musician reveals what it truly takes to survive, adapt, and rise again.
From rebuilding a career to launching new dreams after disaster, Gordy’s story is proof that the comeback can be stronger, wiser, and more powerful than the original.
If you’ve ever had to start over - or worry you might - this book will help you find your rhythm again, one brave step at a time.

Never Giving Up

Drummer and writer Gordy Marshall tells readers that it takes resilience to succeed in one's pursuits. He nearly lost everything after dealing with a dishonest promoter and then losing work opportunities during Covid. But he persevered, finding ways to keep moving forward and reaching goals. This short book is a personal handbook to inspire people to never surrender hopes and dreams in whatever line of work. There will be a way to succeed if you're resilient and open to opportunities that come your way.

What an interesting read. I knew from Postcards from a Rock & Roll Tour that I liked the author's writing style and that has not changed. This offering is well titled, discussing the power of resilience, in this case through the eyes of a musician.

We all know what the COVID pandemic did to gig workers. This is Gordy's story, in his case compounded by some other unfortunate issues. Given current life events (at least in the USA), this is an aspirational read for many of us.
