Tolkien’s most popular works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set in Middle-earth, an imagined world with strangely familiar settings inhabited by ancient and extraordinary peoples. Through this secondary world Tolkien writes perceptively of universal human concerns – love and loss, courage and betrayal, humility and pride – giving his books a wide and enduring appeal.
Tolkien was an accomplished amateur artist who painted for pleasure and relaxation. He excelled at landscapes and often drew inspiration from his own stories. He illustrated many scenes from The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, sometimes drawing or painting as he was writing in order to visualize the imagined scene more clearly.
Tolkien was a professor at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford for almost forty years, teaching Old and Middle English, as well as Old Norse and Gothic. His illuminating lectures on works such as the Old English epic poem, Beowulf, illustrate his deep knowledge of ancient languages and at the same time provide new insights into peoples and legends from a remote past.
Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1892 to English parents. He came to England aged three and was brought up in and around Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1915 and saw active service in France during the First World War before being invalided home. After the war he pursued an academic career teaching Old and Middle English. Alongside his professional work, he invented his own languages and began to create what he called a mythology for England; it was this ‘legendarium’ that he would work on throughout his life. But his literary work did not start and end with Middle-earth, he also wrote poetry, children’s stories and fairy tales for adults. He died in 1973 and is buried in Oxford where he spent most of his adult life.

5★ Realment meravellós. No parlo només de "El Retorno del Rey", sinó de tota la trilogia i el Hobbit. Després de gaudir desenes i desenes de vegades de les pel·lícules durant aquests 25 anys, he de dir que llegir els llibres ha sigut una experiència fantàstica. I a més a més, poder fer-ho acompanyant la lectura amb les magnífiques il·lustracions d'Alan Lee i l'Atles de la Terra Mitjana de Karen Wynn Fonstad (editat per Minotauro).
Puc dir que "La Comunidad del Anillo" és el que més m'ha agradat, però m'és molt difícil valorar-los per separat, ja que al final és una sola història. Són uns llibres preciosos, sí, molt descriptius, però no estan pensats per consumir com un fast food, sinó per assaborir-los a poc a poc. De fet, una de les coses que més m'ha agradat és la capacitat de Tolkien per transmetre aquests inputs sensorials. M'han semblat uns llibres plens d'olors; l'olor de pa acabat de fer de la Comarca, l'olor de tancat i reclòs de Moria, l'olor de les flors dels mallorns de Lothlórien o de la cendra i el sofre del Orodruin.
Un altre cosa que he gaudit molt ha sigut la manera en com he ampliat el meu coneixement en el "lore" i l'univers de la Terra Mitjana, evidentment que hi ha moltes coses que s'expliquen que no surten en les pel·lícules, passatges com els Túmuls o la casa de Tom Bombadill, però també hi trobem un ampli repertori de llegendes, poemes, cançons i històries d'altres edats de la Terra Mitjana que em fan venir ganes de conèixer-la encara més. Més endavant ja m'animaré a llegir El Silmarilion, els Contes Inacabats, Beren and Lúthien, etc...
També és inevitable donar valor a aquests llibres per la seva importància a contribuir a assentar unes bases en la narrativa fantàstica tal com ara la coneixem. Si ho mires amb perspectiva i valores en el moment en què van ser escrits, encara els hi dono molt més valor.
Pel que fa a "El Retorno del Rey", també m'agradaria destacar el penúltim capítol del llibre, "El saneamiento de la Comarca", un episodi que les pel·lícules obvien i que m'ha semblat espectacular. Un capítol amb una entitat i narrativa pròpia que per si sol valdria per fer una pel·lícula complementària a la trilogia de Peter Jackson.
Segurament em deixo milers de coses per comentar i valorar d'aquests llibres, però no em vull allargar més, només vull afegir: Gràcies, J.R.R. Tolkien.
