Vanessa “Vanity” Kirkland is no stranger to drama. Her largely-agreed-upon title as the “Baddest Chick” in hip-hop practically demands it. But if she wants to catapult to megastar status, she’s going to have to break out of the box her raunchy lyrics have built around her and take on a new role.
Between the face, the former-NFL body, and the teddy-bear personality, Alec Everett is easy to cast as the boyfriend type - on TV and the personal wishlists of women all across the world. He’d be a PR dream if he weren’t almost too wholesome.
Both are known for keeping new people at a distance, but their casting in complementary roles demands that they pull together. They couldn’t be more different, but each has something the other is missing. Can they make it work for the roles - and each other?
Vanessa and Alec were good together. Both of them were famous in their respective fields trying to move outside of the box the world had put them in. They both just wanted to "be themselves" without pretending or succumbing to the pressure of what people may think. Alec's BDE was rolling off the page, despite him being a known cornball. Vanessa, was every man's wet dream and together the chemistry was there. I wish she would have made it even more pronounced. The story was going well, but ended abruptly 🥴 They, we deserved more closure.
Vanessa wanted to prove to herself and the world that she was more than a big behind and a song. She proved that and more with her co-star, turned love interest Alex. Our girl did her thing with the show and got her leading man too.
This was a fun read. The couple was very likable. Vanessa reminded me of Megan Thee Stallion. I liked how her character pushed back against the respectability politics that are imposed on Black women. I really loved the way Alec wanted to protect her. He was so decent and respectful. Until it was time for him to take her to Poundtown. Their intimacy was hella spicy. I was very happy with the way things worked out for them. The WAWG series is one of my favorites from CCJ. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Unfortunately, “Beneath The Fame: WAWG Studios - Book 2 of 3 was another mediocre read (3.75 ⭐️’s) 🥴🤷🏾♀️‼️ ….this storylines & series are redundant and boring. Apparently, looks & personas are both deceptive. Vanessa in spite of her implied prior success as a rap artist “Bad 🐩” 🥴, (I’m assuming self proclaimed) and now a cast member of (WAWG) a weekly televised show. Nonetheless, her reputation proceeds her‼️She lives & functions in obscurity. …she is/was still a female in the entertainment industry of double standards rather than empowerment & liberation. Until Alec, Vanessa is/was an insecure woman, vulnerable & needed validation. ..hmmm🧐⁉️
I ate this book up! Baddies need love too and when it’s coming from a secure, mature, and emotionally intelligent man - I loved that for her. You really can’t judge a book by its cover because the good guy and smack it, flip it, and rub it down too ok! The baddie basically needed to get out of her own way and make way for the best thing to happen to her, relationship wise, to come through. The attraction and chemistry came all the way through the page. Sober or with liquor the good guy said what he said and the way he looked at her eww weee!!! Vanessa and Alec were great to read!
Another CCJ banger! The emotions are always on point, the chemistry, the characters and the connection are all high points for me. The only low is that it’s over too soon! I wouldn’t consider this a novella but I miss some of the early days more full length novels. I want to see the characters grow together and I’m definitely a fan of an epilogue which this doesn’t have. But I appreciate the connection between stories and seeing glimpses of previous characters come through. Buy the book you won’t regret it.
Don't judge a book by its cover, is the main take away from this romance story. I love how CCJ prefaced Alec's feelings for Vanessa in the first novella so we knew during that spicy interview which was cute how he felt towards her. Both main characters have been type casted in their careers and in their personal lives and are trying to break free of that. Which they are able to through their relationship. A great comfy, all the feels quick read. Great amount of spice that doesn't get too overbearing.
I truly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. Alec and Vanessa had some amazing chemistry and I liked their bond and the way they both encouraged each other. I enjoyed their easygoing relationship and was left wanting more.
Now I’m ready for the final episode in this series after the sneak peek at the end of the story.
Anywhoo. I enjoyed reading about Vanessa and Alec. They had chemistry that oozed off of the pages and that's a plus because the relationship didn't seem forced. The story line pulled me in from the first page, and I appreciated that it focused more on them and not the characters they were playing in the sitcom they worked on. The author didn't drown us with a bunch of lines they were reading while working.
🎶Yeah, I love me a trappin′ azz, dark skinned country azz, Got it out the mud, 6'1 ole thug azz Talk real slick, big d*ck, big gun azz Pick a bytch up when we f*ck, ole strong azz ninja🎶
I swear these lyrics were livin’ rent free in my head the entire time I was readin’ this book. Alec was definitely channelin’ his inner Xavier Legette during that hotel room scene. Alexa, play Typa. 😏
This was short, spicy, sweet and definitely left me wanting more. I loved how Alec stood on business all throughout the book. I enjoyed when Vanity read raggedy Annie about her trifling ways. I swear j think Raggedy Annie had something to do with the release of you know what.
Really enjoyed this book. Loving the series and the detail in setting up the scenes. It’s not a lot of dialogue yet it’s so intriguing to dive into these characters and what they go through.
Alec and Vee were the cutest little couple. His attraction to her wasn’t going to be hidden or played with. From jump he made it clear that he was feeling her and didn’t let anyone taint that. Not even her.
I love the books, I just need her to give me mooooorrrree. I can’t take it. The writing, characters, and plots are so good. The end always leaves you wanting more.
