An Outlander meets Discovery of Witches enemies-to-lovers romance.
Freya
Aye, I stole a goblet. A magical one. From a witch. In my defense, I returned it. I just… took too long. I was trying to save myself from a loveless marriage, not doom my future. But witches don’t take kindly to thievery that cost them dearly. She granted my wish—then twisted it into a curse. Now I’m thrice wed, never for love. Men want me for my sight, not my heart. And when they don’t heed my visions, they die. I've been taken again, this time by Colin bloody MacDonald. A brute. A Highland warlord. My father’s greatest enemy. He says he’s not like the others. I say he’s worse. He married me to ruin my clan. He thinks he can use me. But I’ve had my fill of being used. And yet… he’s careful with me. Fiercely so. Worse still, he’s handsome when he’s not scowling, and kind when he thinks I’m not looking. I won’t give him my heart. But I fear it may no longer be mine to keep.
Colin
I didn’t want a wife. I needed leverage. A weapon. A way to end this war. Freya MacLeod is all of that—and more trouble than I bargained for. I forced her hand, aye. But I swore not to touch her until she’s willing. And now, every day she refuses me feels like its own kind of curse. She’s fire and prophecy, steel wrapped in silk. And I’m starting to forget I married her for vengeance. Starting to wonder what it would mean to earn her trust. There’s no room for softness in war. No space for hearts in bargains. But when it comes to Freya, I’ve already lost more than I meant to give.
Julie Johnstone is a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author. Scottish historical romance and Regency historical romance featuring highlanders and aristocrats are her love, and she enjoys creating both with a hefty dose of twists, plenty of heartstring tugs, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
Her books have been dubbed "fabulously entertaining and engaging," making readers cry, laugh, and swoon. Johnstone lives in Alabama with her very own lowlander husband, her two children - the heir and the spare, her snobby cat, and her perpetually happy dog.
In her spare time she enjoys way too much coffee balanced by super hot yoga, reading, and traveling.
Julie Johnstone's "The Laird's Magical Lass" is a beautifully crafted historical romance that intertwines elements of magic, intrigue, and emotional moments.
Set in the enchanting Scottish Highlands, this novel serves as the first installment in the Spellbound Hearts series, and it brilliantly sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting journey ahead.
From the outset, the book grabs you with its richly detailed world filled with vivid imagery. The author’s description of the Scottish landscape not only reflects its physical beauty but also adds a layer of atmosphere that enhances the magical themes woven throughout the story. The author's world-building is one of my favourite things, very detailed.
Freya MacLeod, a heroine whose strength and resilience is evident. Burdened by the weight of a witch’s curse and the ramifications it has on her life, Freya’s journey is one of self-discovery and empowerment. Her character evolves in a compelling way, grappling with her past while navigating the complexities of her newfound circumstances. Learning to use and control her magic isn’t going to be easy, but she’s not going to give up.
Colin MacDonald, the Highland warlord, is at first glance, a brooding figure driven by ambition and revenge, but as the story unfolds, layers of his character are revealed. And I wouldn’t say a pussy cat, but he had a softer side not many get to see. His initial intentions towards Freya turn complicated as he finds himself drawn to her. The romantic tension between Freya and Colin is charged with both conflict and undeniable chemistry, resulting in a slow-burn romance.
The interplay of magic in the story adds an intriguing dimension, allowing for a unique exploration of themes such as fate, choice, and the consequences of power. The magical elements intertwine seamlessly with the romance, enhancing the plot without overshadowing the character development. Freya's struggle against the confines of her curse and the expectations placed upon her felt all too real to me.
Julie Johnstone's writing style is engaging and accessible, with a knack for blending rich descriptions and emotional depth. The dialogue feels authentic and natural, further enhancing character interactions and the overall flow of the story. The pacing is a steady pace, balancing moments of tension with quieter character moments that allowed me to catch my breath 😝
Overall, "The Laird's Magical Lass" is a captivating read that combines historical romance and magical realism in an enthralling way. Julie Johnstone has crafted a story filled with dynamic characters, intricate relationships, and a richly imagined world that was just enchanting.
It’s a promising start to the Spellbound Hearts series, and fans of the genre will find it hard to put down. With its blend of magic, love, and self-discovery, this book is highly recommended for anyone looking to lose themselves in a compelling tale set in the enchanting Scottish Highlands.
The Laird's Magical Lass Spellbound Hearts, Book 1 Julie Johnstone ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Freya MacLeod has stolen a goblet. A magical one, one from a witch. In her defense, yes she did return it. It seems she just took a little too long. Really, all she was trying to do was save herself from a loveless marriage, not doom her own future. But in all honesty witches don't take kindly to people stealing things from them and it will cost her dearly. Morgana (the witch) didn't take kindly to her stealing her goblet so she decided to grant Freya her wish, but not in the way she wanted. The witch turned the wish into a curse. Now she's been thrice married, but never once for love. She's a wanted woman because men want her for her sight, not her heart and never for herself. She tries to tell her husbands what will happen if they marry her, but they never listen, and they all die. Now Freya has been saved from one of her husbands and taken by Colin MacDonald. A man who is her father's enemy. He says he's not like the others, but he is much worse than they were. He married her to ruin her clan and he thinks he can use her, but she's had enough of that. And yet, he's so careful with her. Fiercely careful. She finds he's actually handsome when he's not scowling all the time. He's also kind when he thinks she doesn't see it. She has decided that no matter what she will not be giving him her heart because after all he's just another user, but is he really? Now she fears her heart is not her own anymore.
Colin MacDonald never wants another wife after seeing his own pregnant wife killed. What he needs is leverage, a weapon so to speak and a way to win the war. Freya MacLeod is all that and a bag of chips. She's more trouble than he bargained for. He forced her hand, but also swore not to touch her until she wants to be touched. And every day she refuses him feels like a punch to the gut. This woman is fire, prophecy, and steel all rolled into one lass. And now he's starting to forget that he married her for vengeance. He's also wondering what it would be like to have her trust. This one woman has taken more of Colin than he ever thought to give.
Will they be able to get past their problems and finally trust each other? Or will they live their life out as strangers?
Oh my gosh!! What a fantastic book. Julie Johnstone you have outdone yourself this time. I fell into this book hard and I didn't come up for a breath of fresh air until it was done. The characters were brilliant. Colin was such a sweetie and had a caring heart and Freya was hurt so bad she didn't know what or who to believe anymore. All in all this book was absolutely perfect and I'm blown away by Ms. Johnstone's talent. I can't wait for the next one. Nothing like starting a series off with a bang.
This is the first book I've read by Julie Johnstone and it definitely won't be my last! I got totally swept up in the love story of Freya and Colin and read through this in just one day. Julie is wonderful at describing the details of the clothing, scenery and different settings throughout the book and it really immersed me into the beautiful, magical world the characters live in. I also loved how she made me feel like I was really getting to know the characters as she took me through the present day story, as well as things from their pasts that they've been going through and are dealing with. If you want to get swept away into a story where two stubborn people who have both been touched by magic find their way to each other even when they try their hardest not to, this book is perfect for you! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Freya believed if she drank from the witch’s magic goblet she could manipulate her future and marry for love. But she was caught by the witch and cursed with the sight but not the ability to see her own future. As a result she endured 4 brief marriages to evil man and had to come to know the truth about her own father. Colin MacDonald wants peace but Freya’s father only wants power. So Colin takes Freya with the hope for peace only to have her fight him at every turn…..until she sees the man he truly is. I enjoyed this book very much.
Can you love your clan’s enemy? What if a witch could give you power to see the future? Would that change your life for good or bad?
This story takes you on a life changing journey for Freya. Is she being used as a pawn or is she a beloved daughter?
Who can she believe and trust?
Great storytelling and detailed descriptions will keep you enthralled as you travel along with Freya and Colin to see if they get their happily ever after.

Freya MacLeod
In this story it is about a witch, a stolen goblet in which the thief was trying to get out of a marriage she didn't want to spend the rest of his life in. She really meant to return it but when you steal from a witch there is definitely an unknown cost. The witch gave me my desire but then turned it into a curse! Now I am married more times but never for the right reason which is love. Men only desire me physically, never mentally and never for love and when they don’t obey they die!
Now I have been taken by an enemy clan, a highland warlord by the name of Colin MacDonald who is my fathers greatest enemy. As The MacLeods and The MacDonald clans have been enemies for eons! He claims he is different then my previous husbands but he must be worse being our worst enemy! He only married to ruin my father and my clan. I am sick of being used and abused by men who only want me for my looks! The problem is Colin MacDonals is absolutely gorgeous and seems to be very gentle and kind too yet I know it has to be a trick! I will never yield if I do he will own me body and soul and how far will that get me?
Colin MacDonald
He never desired a wife and certainly did not want one now! Freya MacLeod was only a weapon to end this never ending war. Except this woman is a lot more than he ever imagined and more. He agreed not to lay a hand on her until she was ready. He was no monster no matter what she thought! He starts to forget he married her for revenge against her clan and questions if he trusts her enough to open his heart? However there is no room for trust in this ugly war but when it comes to this incredible woman he fears she already owns his heart and fears he already lost his heart to Freya on the battlefield of love.
Will this marriage survive the witches curse? Read and discover Freya and Colin’s fate?
If You love Scottish historical books and love romantasy novels by bestselling authors like Sarah J Maas, Kaylie Smith Keri Lake or Kristen Ciccarelli then you are in the right place. As you will absolutely devour The Lairds Magical Lass. Like the romantasy authors I mentioned, this book is set in a historical setting too in the year of our lord in 1265 in the Isle of Skye in Scotland where magic surrounds Dunvegan castle with magical fairy pools and a flag among other items containing magic too like stolen magical goblets…
I have been reading Julie Johnstone books for many years and I have loved every single book I have read. She is very talented and has a very unique style of writing too. I think this might be my favorite book yet. It is a definite page turner that I absolutely loved from start to finish. An action packed book that both historical and romantasy readers will absolutely love,

What an absolutely captivating read! This story transported me into a world brimming with magic, fierce clan rivalries, and deeply complex relationships. It's not my usual genre, but I found myself utterly engrossed from start to finish.
The dynamic characters are the heart of this tale—Freya, with her sharp wit and haunted heart, and Colin, the Highland warlord whose gruff exterior hides unexpected depths. Their relationship is a fiery dance of defiance, sexual tension, reluctant trust, and undeniable chemistry. Freya's struggle against her cursed fate and Colin's battle between vengeance and vulnerability create a riveting tension that kept me turning pages long into the night.
The magic woven into the story adds an enchanting layer, not just as a plot device but as a force that shapes destinies and tests the characters resilience. The curse, the prophecies, and the witch's twisted wish craft a world that feels both dangerous and mesmerizing.
But at its core, this is a love story—one that defies the odds, thrives amidst betrayal, and blossoms in the most unlikely circumstances. The emotional depth and growth of the characters made their journey feel raw and authentic.
If you’re looking for a book that blends a bit of magic with intense family dynamics, heart-stopping betrayals, and a love story that refuses to be subdued, this is the one. It swept me away, and I loved every moment of it.
I received a complimentary advanced copy from the author, and I’m leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.
A Witch, A Curse, An Incredibly Fantastic Story. Subtitle: Be Careful What You Wish For Let me start my review by letting you now that I wish I could give this story more than 5 stars. I think it could be an award-winning book that took me away and into a world filled with magical curses, horrible family dynamics filled with hypocrisy, marriages, clan wars, betrayals, and discovering that love can conquer more than you can possibly imagine. That being said this is a story between Freya who's been cursed by the witch Morgana and Colin the head of his clan that is struggling with his own unforgettable past. Two deeply emotional characters that go through hell to conquer their fears to find a love beyond desire where their passion takes them to a world of happiness in this fabulous story. ⚡A side I love ⭐the writing style the author choose for this story that also has every page filled with tensions that had my heart sitting on edge through the entire book. 💖Mature Advisory:3/5 🏆A Bravo to Katherine 🙋♀️I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest thoughts and opinion.
I'm a huge fan of Julie Johnstone! The dialog takes you back in time, scenes are described so you feel as though you are there, and the emotions this author writes will warm your heart. She's one of few authors that will write the story as it would have happened in medieval times; it's raw and it's real.
First off, I wanted to adopt Freya and take her out of her situation over and over. I knew it was a romance novel and better things were to come but I wanted to steal her out of the story. What a strong, determined lass who put everyone else above herself.
Colin was very much the man we would hope for in a hero. Also putting others above himself but thinking he could never marry because his heart was buried a long time ago. His actions are purely for his clan and what was best for peace.
These two are treading water with the weight of their past and trust issues upon their shoulders. Maybe the shore is closer than they think.
Outstanding story, loved it all. Cannot WAIT until the next book and I recommend this one highly. If you love stories about seers, you'll love this one. I was gifted with an ARC and wanted to share my thoughts.
The Laird's Magical Lass by Julie Johnstone is unlike any other Scottish Historical Romance I've read. As I started reading, I wasn't sure where it was going and then bam, there it was. The witch, the curse of 4 young women and the first story of this new series. I loved the heroine Freya MacLeod for her loyalty, her bravery and her strength because she sure needed it. She was loyal to her father time and again when he kept betraying her for power and using her sister to do it. Then Colin MacDonald rescued her yet again, but he was the enemy, right? She was strong against him though, or so she thought. He was using her right, just like all the others? Or was he?
I really, really liked this book. Freya and Colin's journey was full of tough roads for both of them, but finding each other, finding closure and their love and HEA was a wonderful journey for the reader. A wonderful ending and epilogue! I recommend this book very highly, totally enjoyed it from beginning to end. Great start to this new series Spellbound Hearts.
I found this to be a gripping tale. Would they overcome their pasts? Freya had put up with a lot of abuse as her father bartered her for power and connections. She was strong enough to survive, was loyal and protective of her sister, and willing to lower her walls when she realized her true feelings. Colin made a death-bed promise that had him fallowing in pain and guilt, but he remained convinced that peace was the way to go. He did what he felt was necessary, not realizing it was the right thing. I loved his devotion to clan and siblings, and then his protectiveness of Freya. I had tears of sadness and joy, smiles for Freya's witty comments, and a full heart by the end.
I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.
Freya just wanted out of a loveless marriage, so she “borrowed” a magical goblet from a witch. Bad idea. The wish she made to escape her fate turned into a curse—now she’s stuck marrying men who want her for her visions, not her heart. Enter husband number three: Colin MacDonald, Highland warlord and her clan’s enemy. He thinks he’s using her for war. She thinks he’s worse than the rest. But things get complicated when hatred turns to something softer—and neither of them knows what to do with that.
This is an enemies to reluctant allies, with magic, prophecy, and plenty of chemistry.
What a monumental tale. Such a fast paced story, it’s easy to read in less than 24 hours. It’s also sexy and romantic with spicy heat. It’s a suspenseful, page turner marked with adventure after adventure keeping you tethered till you reach the end. This book is magical. No wonder Julie Johnstone is a bestselling author who churns out unforgettable romance to an audience of fans and would-be fans. Great job, no idea how you could ever reach higher for the next in series. Good luck with that. I will be looking forward to it.
Loved Colin and Freya's of a wish gone awry as her gift of visions start to feel more like a curse as her plans to use her and it to his advantage to gain more power. To stop this Colin a neighbouring laird kidnaps Freya to ensure her safety from her scheming father only to result in a war being declared. Can Freya and Colin find a solution to end the conflict and will Freya ever be free of her 'gift'
The Laird's Magical Lass by Julie Johnstone is not a fairy tale. Freya MacLeod is a feisty lass that suffers the repercussions of a poor decision that crosses a magical line. Yes she finally gets her HEA with the strong and patient Colin MacDonald, but not before she pays a harsh price. Honestly, that word kept popping into my mind as I read. The overall harshness of the time period was not for the faint of heart. Highlander lovers will enjoy this story.
Outstanding!! I was immersed in magic right away. Swept up in battles soon after. Julie writes so you are in the story! Freya steals a magical goblet to take control of her fate. You get caught up in Freya’s struggles with her gift. Colin steals her, to save his clan. Boy do they have a challenge to get along! What a love story!!

A captivating and magic filled story. Freya and Colin are strong and resilient characters and their journey to love is not an easy one. An enemies to lovers romance with all the drama, danger, passion and belonging.
This is the first that have read any of Julie's books and I look forward to reading more of her stories. This book is not my usual genre but I was engaged from the beginning. Looking forward to reading the next book.
I mean really enchanting! The curse/gift that Freya receives is almost her downfall and the witch that curses her warns her of some things coming. Interesting read!
This was such a cute story. I really enjoyed the interplay between the 2 main characters. I also enjoyed the magic and the repercussions of playing with it. Fun book.
Freya wanted a true love and hearing a tale about a golden goblet gave her the idea to steal it and drink from it and make her wish! The witch caught her and reversed her wish. She had been betrayed, discarded and abused by four husbands and standing at the altar to marry the fifth. Family wasn’t kinship alone. A mystery filled with secrets, sorrows and kindness filled with a forever love. Great characters, shared bonds & trusts will never leave you bored!
