Very leisurely pace. A lot of setup and introspection; not quite enough payoff.

Have to admit I like Shadow (former main character in Logston's work) a bit better. However, Jael (this book's protagonist) definitely stands out in her own right. A great story for those who feel like they "just don't belong" sometimes--and who hasn't? Also a good book for teen girls who like the idea of battling around in full armor. Together with her mom, Donya, there are some serious female role models here!

I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet also wonderfully foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but also familiar enough to make it believable. I love her humor and her characterization.

Reread. I like it better now even though I was pissed off the first time that Shadow was only a side character!
