Winter means sledding and snowman-building fun for children. But for the animals trying to keep warm, it brings thick coyote-fur coats and feather-fluffing birds. This lovely picture book shows the wonders of the natural world as the photographer catches swans, weasels, mountain sheep, owls, rabbits, mice, deer, moose, and more in the winter fields,

A simple text accompanies the photographs in this picture book designed for young readers in preschool through third grade. A Lexile Level of AD650L makes this an adult-directed book to share with young readers. With its magnificent color photographs, this is a not-too-be-missed treasure for readers young and old.

Highly recommended.

Doesn't overreach itself.

It doesn't try to do much, but what it does, it does well. It's prose poetry about wintertime and the different animals and how they deal with the winter. It has a lot of great photographs of the animals that will interest lots of different kinds of people. It's not very long, but it's efficient. It's fairly basic and straightforward, without excessively flowery language. The language is pretty, but not ornamental, and that's one of the reasons it's so short.

It's not great, but it's decent. There's just not much to it.

Easy-to-read text and full-color photographs explore the natural world in winter. (Goodreads summary)

Winter by Ron Hirschi, with photos by Thomas D. Mangelsen, is one in the series of season books created by this team. The text is informative, but the highlight are the photographs. The emphasis of the book is on Winter in the west. Thus the animals featured include Trumpeter Swans, weasels, mountain sheep, coyote, owls, ptarmigan, Canadian Geese, mule deer, moose, & grizzly bear. This is a beautiful book for those who love animals and is usable for story times, one on one sharing, and independent readers.
