Excuse me as I blow my nose and dry my tears. This is a SAD book, and the trigger warning is well-deserved. It took sincere effort not to ugly cry and wake my sister up—I did my best to keep the sniffles to a minimum. But there were definitely legit tears.
This is a story of love… and of loss. A story of grief, an finding the strength to carry on.
It didn’t unfold at all the way I expected. But it was beautiful all the same. And Austin’s love for his family… so inspiring. It’s a strong reminder of the joy of love, and marriage, and building a life with the person you adore.
I was wholly absorbed in the emotional rollercoaster that this was. I love that the main characters were musicians, and all the sweet moments they had creating and singing songs together. I loved their love story, and the gentle tenderness they felt for each other, and the pro-life messages that shown through. It was lovely.
There were definitely elements that felt like they didn’t get fully fleshed out. The competition… the concerts… the tour—it all blurred by. I kind of wish it had been given more detail; I think those things would have made the story that much cooler. But I also recognize that the focus was on Austin and Willow’s relationship. It just seems like something the author could have taken advantage of!
I LOVED that the author put her faith in Jesus first in her acknowledgements… but it really didn’t show in the story, which was disappointing. For a book about grief and finding hope, I wish there’d been more than a couple passing comments about God and prayer.
Also, some issues I had: first, several instances of the Lord’s name being taken in vain, as well as a p-word. That didn’t bother me as much as Willow and Austin cohabiting for a long time before marriage. It’s never sexual… they just live together and share a bed and snuggle as far as we can see on the page. But still, it did bug me.
But then, it’s a clean book, not Christian, and clean it was.
So… 3.5 is rounding up to 4 stars. It legitimately made me cry, guys. I was pretty invested. There were disappointing elements, but they didn’t overshadow the main messages of the story. Overall, a very melancholy, bittersweet read for anyone up for a cry. 😊
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I received an ARC in an exchange for an honest opinion.
This is my 5th Jennifer Carr book and they keep getting better. These characters jump off the page, pull you in, and eventually feel like friends. While this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. However, there's a richness to having read the other three books in this series, because you catch glimpses of characters that you've already met and it's fun to see how they are doing. This book is perfect for anyone who loves clean romance, slow burns, reality television, and country music. It's not just a book about romance, but also about loss, grief, unfair diseases, and life's many surprises.
ARC reader here. I’m honestly still processing everything. Going into it, I thought it was going to be a light romance about two musicians falling for each other while competing on a reality show, I was told I was going to cry yes but was I prepared for it no. And yes, that part of the book was super sweet—the chemistry between them on stage as a duet and off stage as they slowly opened up to each other was amazing. I loved how natural their relationship felt, and I was rooting for them from the start. But then the story hit me out of nowhere with how emotional it got. The grief, the way everything shifted from a fun romance into something so raw and heartbreaking—it honestly floored me. Watching one character fight so hard, and then seeing the other left to pick up the pieces while also raising their daughter… it was heavy, but written in such a real and human way. It’s not just a romance—it’s about love, loss, family, and figuring out how to keep moving when life completely knocks you down. I’ll be honest, this book had me tearing up more than once, but that’s exactly what made it hit so hard. One of my favourite quotes from the book “Grief is like butter. (…) At first, it’s solid and heavy. But as you mix it in it melts and becomes part of everything. It changes the texture, adds richness, makes things better in a way that you can’t quite put into words” It felt real, and that’s what stuck with me. If you want a story that’s emotional, heartfelt, and one that’ll sit with you long after you finish it, this is definitely worth picking up.

Still holding out for you, man, just wrecked me in the best way.
I’m not an easy crier, and this had me in tears. 😭 the story of Austin and willow is one of the best love stories I’ve read in a long time!
They meet, they fall in love, and then they have to face the world together, and the world is mean. The trials are tough, the love is strong, and the music is beautiful.
If you want to be wrecked in every moment you are reading, pick this book!
Still Holding Out for You is one of the best sweet romance books I've read this year. Austin & Willow have a magical connection that helps them when they sing and play guitar as a duo on stage. Both collaborate on lyrics and harmonize beautifully together. After marrying, Willow discovers that she is pregnant, but then the other shoe drops. She has a hard decision to make that will affect both their lives.
The story is a wonderful one, beginning like some relationships when the other person is also a work partner. But this one has some twists. The main characters had me mesmerized from the beginning. They had many layers and were courageous, strong, and determined. Once, they were extremely happy. This book evokes a wide range of emotions. I felt myself reaching for the tissues more than once, but I couldn't stop reading. I had to find out how it ended. There was a surprising ending that was inspiring.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
Jennifer Carr give readers a backstage pass once again into the lives of the contestants of the reality show, Real American Country in her latest release Still Holding Out for You. Still Holding Out for You zooms in on the lives of Austin, a rancher from Montana, and Willow, a sweet girl from Georgia, who both have dreams of making it big creating the music they love. Sparks and friendship fly from the get-go, making Austin and Willow realize that they are better together than apart in all areas of life. After creating the country duo Grace and Gravel, all of Austin and Willow’s dreams for life and success are coming true until blessing and heartbreak collide, threatening all they hold dear.
Jennifer Carr knows how to craft a beautiful story full of emotions, that shows it from the viewpoint of both of it’s main characters, adding a depth and fullness to her stories that make the stories uniquely Jennifer Carr. This is true of Still Holding Out for You. Between the first book in the Real American Country series to now, I have seen Ms. Carr’s growth as a writer. When I read a Jennifer Carr book, I’ve learned that it will be an emotional read that takes me out of my comfort zone. And despite this, I still want to know what goes on in the Real American Country world that Ms. Carr created! I liked meeting Austin and Willow and I thought pairing them together as a Country Duo added a unique twist in the series. As the chapters built, I felt that not enough time was given to Austin and Willow’s actual relationship after they got together and that most of the book was about “Will they get together or won’t they?”, even though I know that’s the way Ms. Carr intended it to be. (That’s just Reader’s Opinion though and doesn’t take away from the book.) Having personal experiences, either personally or by proxy of a family member, with some of the health challenges, including death, that arose in the book, I found it difficult on how to respond to those parts of the book because my family responded completely different to them emotionally in real life than the characters in the book did to some of the same, similar situations. (This doesn’t necessarily make those situations in the book right or wrong, but helps to illustrate how we all express and deal with life differently.) Still Holding Out for You also talked about the option of abortion. Being personally opposed to abortion, regardless of the situation, it hurt reading that a Doctor brought it up for medical situations and that Austin acted like it was ok, if that was what Willow chose, when they found out they were expecting. While overall a clean read, some of what the characters did did not align with my personal values, such as living together before marriage as well as some of the slang used being a little edgier than I am comfortable using in my daily life. Daily life aside, these things did not prevent me from escaping into the Real American Country world and hanging out again with it’s Contestants. I also saw and appreciated the message and awareness that Ms. Carr was bringing to the forefront through the issues that arose in Still Holding Out for You. If you are looking for a deep escape of love and life then I highly recommend Still Holding Out for You by Jennifer Carr! I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the world of Real American Country next!
Have you read Still Holding Out for You? What did you think of the book?

Still Holding Out For You by Jennifer Carr Austin is enamoured by the beauty before him ,drawn like a moth to a flame . This siren ,Willow be her name and let God be his witness he wants to claim her as his own special prize ,keep her away from those other guys. "Wouldn't miss a chance to thank you for the music” she utters and I’m surprised when his reply isn’t in splutters…”Thanks. You're not so bad yourself. Where'd you learn to harmonize like that?" Austin Blake and Willow Gracin have made contact and my hearts a racing. The easy banter, she could’ve been delivered by Santa. He’s fallen hard for this lady. Was it the Tennessee heat that had her heart skip a beat or was it Austin though they only just did meet? The connection we see clearly and these two souls love each other dearly. As much as the music that carries them on . Willow Gracin will always be his hon. This journey of theirs that Jennifer Carr has shared with us ,could be us. It’s a love story to touch your very soul. Beauty to behold . Austin Blake and Willow Gracin’s love story lives on in us ,each and every one of us. Let me explain….This book will never leave my head ,it’s taken up permanent residence instead. Truly wrenchingly delivered by your pen Jennifer Carr ,I still feel the resounding emotions of Austin and Willow ,don’t think they’ll ever go . But that’s ok because I love them so. Their’s is a love withstanding the testament of time and its telling ,sublime .Courage ,healing and profound loss …Humanity is living ,breathing , being… It’s not just who makes you happy but who we are shaped to be through destiny. For Blake and his Willow ,love is here to stay in their heart ,mind, body and soul ,just being together nurtures but even apart they’re bound by the same heart beating as one . Blake Austin and his hon. Every moment ,every glance in this romance is electric, magical though tragical . A breathtaking reminder of how precious life is. Grasp it with both hands ,no demands ,just live your journey to the best that you are whether you reach your goal of being a star . Just know to your one true love . You already are. You make a difference in their life ,even through heartache and strife. There’s a special kind of power and relief shared through grief that cannot put asunder. A courage through healing from profound loss. Carrying on though is a must. A promise was given so thus driven you are to be your own shining star. A promise made though the pain lives on ,it shapes the new stronger you. One with scars and healing through. Though outside you won’t be revealing, a star is born though still reeling. It’s the way of the world and ours is not to wonder why our most precious someone has to die. An oath to always be true to you . to give whether yours is a long life or short-lived. The journey is who you’re with. This story resonates with us all . It’s in tune with every living being on God’s earth. Life is precious , love defies pain . This story is another testament to the strength of man ,the courage to stand in steadfast earnestness and determination to carve a path out of the aftermath of grief. All consuming but not defying, just a belying healing ,shaping a new life through strife that will never been the same but by love you’ve been claimed . Still Holding Out For You isn’t just a love story about grieving . It’s strength ,it’s being not only able to feel pain through adversity but channeling it ,taking in comfort ,inner peace within ,your salvation This book wrecked me . Thank you from the bottom of my heart for penning this beautiful book Jennifer Carr. It’s gotta be your best yet about how two lovers met through their love of Big Country music.
I cannot say enough about this story. It will definitely stick with me for quite sometime. The entire story had me as the reader invested and engaged from beginning to the very end. It was a roller skating rink of emotions so have tissues handy. It was so beautifully written and the characters will stick with me as well as the descriptions of the beautiful scenery. This book will definitely be in the top ten books that I personally read in 2025. Austin & Willow left their mark on my heart and soul. Truly just a wonderful read and one that you won’t forget.
I received this book as an ARC. I have read the other books in the series and loved all of them. But this one is special. The main characters, Austin and Willow are so likable. I found myself rooting for them from the beginning. Their romance is slow, but steady, and very sweet. The characters from the previous books are sprinkled throughout, and add to the storyline. Unfortunately, life isn’t always fair, and hits them hard. I cry through many stories, just who I am, but this one? I think I sobbed through 2/3 of it, in a good way. And although there are devastating events, the book ends with the promise of happiness again. But that’s another story for a different day.
Two talented musicians form a strong bond during a country music reality show. Austin and Willow's voices blend together beautifully, and their song-writing styles intertwine as if they were meant to be together. When they decide to combine their talents on the road, life gets complicated, and their bond begins to fray. They are more afraid of losing each other than stepping into the unknown and admitting their love. Find out how their love grows even to the point of heartbreak. Find out how heartbreak turns into a miracle. Find out how the miracle saves lives. This was definitely a hard book to read but you have to stick with it to find the hidden treasures. A must read for country music fans....it comes with a Playlist!
Have your tissues ready! This was a sweet clean romance about two country music singers competing on a reality show. I loved how they both wanted each other but didn’t want to ruin what they had.
About halfway is when I needed the tissues! Willow was so strong for as long as she could be and Austin never left her side.
Although this book had a tough storyline, it was so well written, from romance to heartbreak. I will always remember grief is like butter…

I’ve never read a book by Jennifer Carr before, and I didn’t know what to expect from this one. While I usually don’t enjoy books that open at the end and then go back and fill in the blanks for the majority of the book, the writing of this one was done in a way that it didn’t bother me. And I like the back and forth from one POV to the other in each chapter, though there are a few chapters in a row for each POV at times.
The love story set against the backdrop of a musical television reality show was a joy to read. Their fears of moving from friends to more was realistic and kept me rooting for them to take that next step beyond their fears. It is a sweet love story.
As wonderful as the love story is the portrayal of the friendships developed through the reality show where all reason would say they should be against each other instead of fostering a feeling of family. It was sweet and added depth to the story after the show ended.
I love some of the phrasing the author uses. In a story about musicians, there was a rhythm and use of description that was almost lyrical in itself. It paired perfectly with the story. And the story itself was not only sweet and beautiful but heartbreaking too. And so wonderfully written I found myself moved to tears at various points.
For my Still Holding Out for You review I give the story five stars. I received a copy of this book through Just Read. The reviews and opinions are my own and freely given.
Contemporary Romance is a genre that I truly enjoy! Still Holding Out For You by Jennifer Carr is Book 4 in the Real American Country series. I have read a couple other in this series and enjoyed them.
WOW, the storyline in this book really grabbed my interest immediately. The 2 main characters are Austin Blake and Willow Gracin. . They meet each other when they both participate in a TV Reality Show, based in Nashville. Austin and Willow discover that they are connected through their love of Music and Performing and even begin to collaborate together. I LOVE how they slowly realize that they have much more in common then just Music and take it slowly from a friendship to eventually getting married. Their marriage comes with Loss and Grief, yet through the struggles they remain committed and strong. The story is definitely a Tear Jerker, yet also has times of comfort. The author really takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions. I think this book is my favorite in this series so far! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Country Music and Clean Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!
This is a beautiful book that deals with very heavy themes, so know your triggers before you start reading.
OMG... This book is loaded with so much pain, sentiments, grieve, adversity, music, courage, and so much love.
I am not going to give much more than what is in the blurb, because this is the kind of book that needs to be read, and it will linger in your mind and heart for a while.
This is a story about the power of love, its ups and downs, the journey that true love can take you through. This is not a sweet/spicy love story, this is a connection that takes time, and a few growing pains to cement before it is rocked to its foundation. The two main characters meet and recognize the spark on each other, but in the limelight it all looks perfect, that is until real life starts and the true journey of life as a couple starts. The characters are relatable, you will cry, you will smile, you will want to hug them. THe plot is fast paced, gritty, raw, real, filled with sentiments, insights, a lot of pain , a lot of feelings.
be ready to be touched deeply by this book!!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Willow 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Y'all!! I finished the book😁🥹 Lemme tell you- this book will absolutely wreck you and then put you back together again. And when I say wreck you- I mean crying your eyes out kind of wreck you. I'm usually not a crier when I read books, but I cried... so buckle up! Mrs Jennifer perfectly demonstrates the beauty and strength of love, the intense difficulty of grief, and having the will to keep going and heal despite it! This is a beautiful story of love and loss and healing all wrapped up into a wonderful, clean romance novel!!! Still Holding Out For You releases in October so make sure you keep a lookout to order one (or several) copies of her book ;) I love Mrs. Jenn to death and have been so blessed to get to know her better through spending time with her at church, and it has been such a blessing for her to share her gift of writing with me!! I hope you choose to enjoy her writing as well :) Happy reading and have a blessed day!!🫶🏼
Still Holding Out for You is the first book I have read written by Jennifer Carr, and it was very emotional. I was not expecting it. Even though the author has a content warning. My brain shut that off and forgot about it as I started to read the book.
The story starts with a singing contest. It was a fun place to begin the story and watch Austin and Willow get close. Then they go on tour together, and we watch the love story unfold more. It was at this point that I felt we were nearing the end of the story, but there was still more. To avoid any spoilers, we have a story with music, love, passion, hope, loss, grief, and more.
The romance is closed-door with kisses only. This is clean fiction, not Christian, so there is mention of sleeping in the same bed, waking up together, and snuggling as Austin and Willow lived together before they were married. I personally did not love this, but I appreciated that it was a clean romance with no spicy content.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion
This is book 4 in a series. They can be read as stand alone. I have not read any of the others in the series. I am going to go and read them..

This book wrecked me in the best way. My emotions were all over the place. I was so tore up by this one. It was absolutely beautiful. I fell in love with Austin and Willow. Such an amazing couple. They were truly meant for one another. Their relationship was so deep, so loving. They held on even in the hardest of times. This book pulled me in and just kept me so captivated by its beauty, its warmth, and hire wonderful it was.
