Roman Dirge (born on April 29, 1972) is an artist and magician, and the creator of the Lenore comic-book series; he currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
Told by his art teachers that he would never make it as an artist due to his crude style, he quit art and became a full-time magician. After a few years, his passion for art overtook him and he created the comic about Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl for Xenophobe magazine. The comic strips were later seen by Dan Vado, president of Slave Labor
missed this back in the day but totally constitutes sth of a rosetta stone for certain strains of '00s humor as practiced on livejournal, tumblr, myspace, &c. gather round zoomers & alphas and let me tell you about something called a forums signature......
It was hilarious! I loved it. that is all. now go read it! there's actually more before this but i havn't read them yet. so you might want to read those to...
The only comic I enjoyed in this volume was "Things Involving Me: My Dad. Yes, he really did this stuff." and "The Evil Urinal." Roman should have a book of just the comics about him.
What I learned from this book: Little dead girls can be very witty, and vampires trapped in stuffed animals are quite attractive when they are finally released from their furry little bodies. ha! really though-- i liked the one volume i read-- which was # 11. Al, from Al's Comics in SF recommended this to me since I liked Johnny the Homicidal Maniac so much, and yup, he was right, I really enjoyed Lenore. I'm gonna go find some more. It's like crack and chocolate covered pretzels and shit like that.
The weakest of the bunch. There’s still some solid jokes but a lot less. This is comic is actually one cohesive story, but I don’t think it works that well. It turns a solid comedy series into a mediocre action comedy series.
Do love the art though. Brings me back to my childhood.
Me encanta la niña muerta. Está bien loca y es toda una sanguinaria accidental, porque luego ni se anda fijando en nada. Toda despistada, se parece a mí. Me gustó, con todo y lo macabro que la rodea.
This volume has me very conflicted - some of the moments were definitely, by far my favorite in the series yet! But others I really didn't care for at all. So, over all, it had some cute moments, some really funny moments and some gross moments.
I’ve had this for a while and must’ve read it at some point but went ahead and reread it. I don’t think it’s something I’ll reread again but it does what it sets out to do, and the vague things I did in fact remember from the first time I must’ve read it turned out to entirely be from the small autobio comics included near the end of a few issues. The stories of the urinal that takes pictures of you, his dad pranking his family regularly and with great commitment and as a child the author making fake dynamite out of tampons, for whatever reason stuck around in my head, unidentifiable in source and if I ever recalled them on my own would probably have imagined I read it somewhere ephemeral and lost like an old reddit thread or whatever. The stories of Lenore and co pleasantly reminded me a bit of old Keenspace comics but did not stick with me. Dang I haven’t even thought of Keenspace in forever. Wow. Anyway yeah review over.
The sale section at Forbidden Planet throws up many wonders. On my most recent trip I found a later volume in this series so I thought I should read this volume first. Although it is the third volume you don't lose too much of the backstory as the world that Roman Dirge creates is so weird and wonderful you just accept what is going on.
Lenore is a cute little, dead, 10 year old, girl, whose sidekick is a all powerful vampire trapped in a plushie doll. In this volume we see the aftermath of her escape from 'heck' and heck's armies of zombie Nazi soldiers trying to return her.
Also included are mini comic about Roman's own life, guest art and some guest mini comics/crossovers.
I re-read some Lenore to see if I liked it as much as I did in HS/college (that was 20 years ago), and while I don’t think I’m as enthralled with her as I was then, I definitely chuckled out loud several times, and enjoyed it start to finish. I love how artwork this deceptively childish can be so full of expression. The Cute Little Dead Girl is still a winning creation in my book.
I never read anything else by Roman Dirge besides Lenore. Might be time to have a look.
2.5 Stars. Had this graphic novel laying around for years and finally decided to read it. I think I originally picked it up because of the obvious gothic, Tim Burton-esque influence but didn't realise it was the 3rd edition in a series. I understand what this comic is going for but personally it's just not really to my tastes. I'm undecided as to whether I like the naïve drawing style or hate it and as much as I enjoy a bit of immature humour, I just can't get on board with the level of it in Lenore (not to sound like a snob).. I know it's just a bit of fun.
I accidentally read Volume three first because I wasn't aware this was a series, I had just seen it on Hoopla and thought it looked really interesting! And it was! I was a little confused but not so confused I couldn't follow the story, I'll definitely be going back and reading the others in the series!
The cute little undead girl decides the after life is DULL and returns to ... Life? Undeath? Un-life-death? Also, what does Mr Gosh REALLY look like under that mask of his?
I went backwards with Lenore and started to read it from the latest issues but I loved this from start to finish. I also absolutely adored the art style.
