✨ Book Review ✨ Crown of Broken Promises by Susan Person ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5
If you’re into fae, unicorn shifters, and a dose of forbidden love, this short prequel is a must-read. I loved the dual POV, the spice, and the tension that kept me flipping pages. 🔥
One word: Cyrus. He completely stole the show for me — I need a full book on him, stat. 👑💔 And this quote? 👉 “I want to see into your soul when I fuck you.” Unforgettable. 😮💨
If you love fast-paced fantasy romance with bite, this one should be on your radar.
Big thank you to Susan Person and Grey’s Promotion for this arc copy.
Susan Person has done it again with Crown of Broken Promises, prequel to Crown of Night and Rain. I LOVED that we finally got to learn about Gemma’s travels to the enemy kingdom. We read Ari’s story and how she met Rain. This story explains how Gemma met Laurel and how she learned about the history of her kingdom. Light is shed upon all the lies that were told to her about the enemy kingdom when she was a little girl. I love love love Gemma. She is a strong and independent woman who chooses to embrace the change rather than fear it. She stands her ground when necessary and always chooses to do the right thing, even when it is difficult. This book enhanced my love for Laurel. It was nice to get an MMC who wasn’t an a**. He was always his true and honest self and it was a nice refresher to have a character who was comfortable in their own skin. Ugh, my heart was ripped into pieces with this one when we learn what happens with Cyrus, Gemma’s bonded unicorn. I honestly think Cyrus is one of my favorite characters. The way he cares for Gemma and would do anything for her, even if it means breaking unicorn law. I was not expecting this to be a why choose but it was done so well and in such a respectful way. I can not wait to read Cyrus’s story. This series has me locked in and I can not wait for the next one. Susan, you’re tugging on my heart strings. Lol.
I love the writing. Everything is written so elegantly and is very easy to follow. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars is because I just wish there was more. I didn’t want to put it down! There’s not a lot of spice, but when it happens, it’s sooooo good. I also wish there was more of that but I can’t deny what we were given. I’m completely invested in Gemma and Ari’s stories.
In * Crown of Broken Promises*, we’re taken on an enchanting journey with two kingdoms at odds, where a forbidden romance blooms amid ancient magic and looming threats.
This was a great short prequel that tells us all about how Gemma and Laurel meet….
When she finds herself in the hostile grasp of Prince Laurel, her enemy, (she wandered into Forbidden Forest after hearing a voice) the story explores the clash between. Here she learns some painful truths (it seems most of what she’s been told growing up was a lie!) Finding out about her parents was painful for poor Gemma (my heart did hurt for her 😞)
Both characters are well developed, showing us their internal struggles and growth as they navigate their unexpected feelings. Both Lauren and Gemma have their say in this book.
The setting is vividly written, with the Forbidden Forest serving as a dark yet captivating backdrop that enhances the story's tension. The presence of unicorns and vampires adds an intriguing layer to the world building.
Overall, is story is a wonderfully crafted tale of love against all odds, rich in emotion and adventure. It encourages us to question allegiances and challenges the notion that enemies are always so easily defined.
Although a short story, it doesn’t lack for anything. And it’s not quite instalove that most fated mates seem to have.
This novel is perfect for fans of enchanted romances filled with magic, intrigue, and fated mates (a favourite trope of mine 💜)
Do you need to read this before or after the first book (Crown of Night and Rain) I’d probably say read book one first, then this one.
Crown of Broken Promises by Susan Person The Night and Rain series, prequel
Thank you to Grey's Promotions and Susan for entrusting me with an early copy!
Dual POV, fated mates, perceived enemies to lovers, forbidden love, everything is a lie, ancient magic, fae and unicorn shifters
When Gemma crossed into the Forbidden Forest thinking to help the voice she had heard, she ends up being caught by the enemy. When he brings her to his kingdom, she starts to learn everything she has been taught is a lie. As she relearns history and this kingdom, can she navigate her feelings for both this handsome new stranger as well as her bonded unicorn?
This was a great short prequel that gave us Gemma and Laurel's story! I couldn't stop reading and stayed up way too late to finish it! Like Crown of Night and Rain (book 1), we slowly get more and more of the story, which I always like. I think with this shorter book there is also a good balance of having an instant spark that moves to more without being instalove. And the spice is spicing! I'm excited to continue revisiting this world!!
A Crown of Broken Promises is the Prequel that I didn’t know I needed. This story has fated mates, forbidden romance, Unicorns, and enemies to lovers all in one.
“You are the sweetness of a magnolia blossom after a spring rain. Strong and vibrant and beautiful. I have so much respect for how fearlessly you speak your mind. You are an incredible force, and I’m not sure you know that about yourself.”
When Gemma and Laurel meet there is an instant spark between them, but she knows she needs to get back to her family. Cyrus, her bonded Unicorn, is possessive and protective of her. There may be feelings between them all that are strictly forbidden. Can they ignore this desire between them or they risk it all to be with each other?
“Because the light shines whenever you are near. There isn’t anything I need more than to breathe the same air you do.”
As Gemma learns the truth about her mother and father, she knows she can’t go back without risking the lives of her siblings. That isn’t the only thing keeping her from returning to the prison realm though. The closer she gets to Laurel the more Cyrus seems to pull away.
I love this series so much and I cannot wait for more of it. I absolutely devoured this book. I need more immediately!!! Although this is the prequel to Crown of Night and Rain, I would recommend reading that first if you haven’t already.

Thank you Susan Person and Grey’s Promotions for my ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review
Thank you to Susan Person and Grey’s Promo for an advanced copy of this book!
This book .5 in a new Romantasy series! This was quick read and a great introduction to the world of magic and characters that will be in the rest of the books. The book left me in a big of hangover and I’m really looking forward to what comes next. I have some ideas on the turns it’s about to take… and if so… it’s not something we see very often in a Romantasy.
If you loved the first book, then this prequel is a must read! “Crown of Broken Promises” is a quick read and takes place right before Gemma left her sister behind to go to the enemy kingdom. As soon as I started, I was instantly captivated and had a hard time putting it down. I wish it was a little bit longer with more background and world building when it came to the unicorn’s history but I liked learning about more about Ari and Gemma’s mother. Can I request a book on their parents??
I loved learning more about Gemma and her bonded unicorn, Cyrus. Also seeing what Laurel had told her and the difficulties he faced to convince Gemma to stay was very fun. I was not expecting a MFM scene when I started, but it was discussed and lead up to it so if that’s not your cup of tea, you can easily skip that part and not miss anything important to the story. The few questions I had in the first book are still present at this time, but since it was a prequel, I didn’t expect all my questions to be answered.
I would say you could read this one before “Crown of Night and Rain” but I recommend reading it after as you’ll have way more world building and understanding in book 1.
This book has: - Enemies to lovers - MFM - Dual POV - Badass FMC - Instant attraction - Elemental Magic - Secrets/Hidden Identity - Unicorn Bonds - Vampires - Fae/Elves - Politics - Modern Technology with Magic
Gemma and her bonded unicorn Cyrus--against Cyrus' better judgment and warning-- walk into the Forbidden Forest where they are taken "captive" by Laurel. He does not wish Gemma or Cyrus any harm; rather, Laurel wants to receive Gemma's assistance in their kingdoms' wars against the vampires and restoring magic to its previous levels. Will Gemma and Cyrus agree to help Laurel and his kingdom?
This Romantasy teems with world-building and character development. The spice level is VERY HOT! 4 chili peppers. You can easily skip bedroom chapters and miss very little plot.
I rate 4.5 out of 5 stars. I would of enjoyed more details about Cyrus' unicorn matters, more about the parentage that was briefly mentioned, and a lower spice element. These are just my preferences.

This is the prequel for Susan Person's Night and Rain Series. I did not read Book 1, so I went into this read with no expectations. I will pick up Book 1 and other books written by Person; she has a talent for world-building and character evolvement.
Thank you to #SusanPerson and #GreysPromotions for my ARC; this review is my honest opinion.
Give me forbidden romance, magic, amazing character building, and possible threats around every corner! Susan Person delivers a beautiful prequel in Crown of Broken Promises. This is set before Crown of Night and Rain in her Empire of Curses and Dreams series. This story delivers everything I loved about book 1. Susan’s world building welcomes us back to the universe within this book with vivid imagery and details.
This story takes us back to when Gemma and Laurel first meet. If you haven’t read book 1, I strongly encourage you to first. Even though this is book 0, it should be read as book 2 as there will be spoilers. Diving deeper into the bond that these two share made this a fun read that sheds light on circumstances from the previous book.
This book is a true expression of what people are willing to do for those they love and the secrets they are willing to keep to keep those they love safe. The bond between Gemma and Laurel is amazing to see grow and become more, while another bond of Gemma’s bends into something she wasn’t expecting. This little twist in the story provided depth and complexity that I ate up.
This series has been so good thus far and I need book 3 asap. Susan has quickly become a favorite author of mine. She provides easy to follow storylines, while giving us drama, romance, and intrigue. The journey her characters go through is one I have loved and am excited to see where she takes us next.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

As the prequel novella to Crown of Night and Rain, Crown of Broken Promises was a quick, satisfying read that pulled me right back into this lush world.
I enjoyed the first book but sometimes felt a bit overwhelmed by all the magic and lore. This novella gave me the perfect chance to settle back in — focusing on Gemma and Laurel (and of course, Cyrus 😉) made the story feel intimate and grounded.
The plot flows naturally, the pacing works well, and the characters shine. Gemma is such a standout — observant, stubborn, capable, and bonded to Cyrus, her broody, mysterious unicorn shifter. She’s carried feelings for him for ages, but a fateful walk in the woods changes everything when she meets Laurel — a fae healer whose warmth and light open up all kinds of possibilities (wink wink).
There are familiar faces, fresh truths about Gemma’s family, and a forbidden connection that’s both tender and deliciously tense. The romance sizzles just enough to keep your heart racing, while the emotional threads stay believable and relatable.
Overall, this novella does exactly what a prequel should: it deepens the world, gives us another perspective on Arianna and Rainier’s bigger story, and leaves you wanting more — especially Cyrus’s book!
Big thanks to Grey’s Promo and Susan Person for the ARC — sorry for my late review and thank you so much for your patience! All thoughts are my own.
I went into Crown of Broken Promises completely blind and I’m so glad I did—what a ride! This novella was a fast-paced, spicy, and surprisingly emotional read. I devoured it in just a few hours and loved every second. The plot was strong and held its own despite the spice (which was spicing in the best way 👀🔥).
The chemistry between Gemma, Laurel, and Cyrus was palpable, and the “why choose” element caught me off guard—in the best way possible. Their connection felt natural, intense, and tender all at once. And can we talk about Cyrus?! I never thought I’d be into a unicorn/man… but here we are and I have zero regrets 🫠🦄
The world-building was enchanting, the pacing perfect, and the romantic tension? Chef’s kiss. If you love quick romantasy reads with strong magical vibes, found family, and a side of spice that hits just right—this one’s for you.
I can’t wait to dive deeper into this world and read more from Susan Person!
Thank you to Grey’s Promotion for the early copy. All thoughts are my own.
This is a prequel to Susan Person's Crown of Night and Rain. Admittedly, I had not read that book first. I recommend doing so before the prequel. I will be doing so soon! I feel like I missed a lot of world building because I didn't read that first.
Crown of Broken Promises follows Princess Gemma and her bonded unicorn Cyrus as they enter the forbidden forest and come across Prince Laurel from the "enemy" kingdom. Laurel's kingdom is very much has a 21st century technology feel with cell phones, etc. and Gemma's kingdom does not have anything like it.
This prequel had some good bones to it. However, the insta/lust-love and early mentions of "stick" twitching wasn't my thing. I also think there were some missing time and events. There was mention of Laurel and Gemma taking selfies, and I wish we had that as a chapter for character development and bonding. I felt like the author just expected you to know what's happening in regards to mates and the plot. (Again, it's my fault for not reading the book 1!) There was also lots of flash forwards to get to the start of where book 1 begins.
My favorite character in this book was Cyrus. Poor broken Cy. I will say I was excited to hear he will be getting a novella of his own.
Thank you, Susan, for a chance to have an ARC copy.
Thank you to Grey's Promotions and author Susan Person for the ARC of Crown of Broken Promises. I am thankful for the opportunity to read another masterpiece by this author.
On the anniversary of her mother's death, Gemma embarks on a journey through the Forbidden Forest, much to her bonded unicorn Cyrus' dismay. That's because people that go in never come out.
What they find is a world that is a complete 180° from what they have known. Prince Laurel guides them and unearths truths for Gemma to see and decide if she wants to believe. What they can't deny is an instant connection and spark of attraction. Will that be enough for Gemma to stay or return to her prison kingdom?
This book is full of wonder, fated mates, forbidden love, and spice. If you love a good romantasy and enemies to lovers, read a Ceoqn of Broken Promises and follow up with Crown of Night and Rain.
WOW! This is book two in the Night and Rain Series and I could not put it down. I read book one and could not wait for book two. Book two has left me needing book three. The Night and Rain Series needs to be read in order.
Crown of Broken Promises is a book that tells the story of Gemma’s mom. I love that I learned more about a character and their history. Family history is important and it shapes so many of the future decisions. Gemma learns not only about her history but also about her strengths. She learns how strong she truly is, who her family really is, and how she can make a difference in the future.
There are some super steamy scenes and I enjoyed them. I am interested to see how one in particular will play into the future books. The magic, the history, the steamy relationships are all what I enjoyed in this book and cannot wait to see what is next for Gemma.
📚✨ Crown of Broken Promises by Susan Person ⭐️3/5 | 🌶️3/5
Give me forbidden romance, magic, stunning worldbuilding, and danger lurking in every shadow—Susan Person DELIVERS. This prequel novella sets the stage for her Empire of Curses and Dreams series and does not hold back.
Even though it’s short, Crown of Broken Promises feels rich and complete. The emotional stakes are high, the romance is intense without falling into classic instalove traps, and the characters? Instantly unforgettable. You’ll be questioning loyalty and craving more after the final page.
It’s everything I love about the fated mates trope, but with a unique twist that keeps it from feeling predictable. If you’re a sucker for enchanted realms, political intrigue, and love that defies boundaries—this one’s for you.
I think I need to read book one in order to get into this one, so it may need to be a re-read.
Well, my goodness! This was so incredible getting to see Gemma and Laurel’s story of how they came to be. I just love these two so much! They’re backstory is so refreshing. The instant spark, the genuine love that grew between them, a bit of snarky banter, and some HAWT spicy scenes 🥵. I also very much enjoyed getting to see more of Cyrus, Gemma’s bonded Unicorn. It was so difficult to see her reactions to finding out the truth about her mother, her father and the purpose of their kingdom.
This world is very intriguing and I am loving this series so much! I can’t wait for the next installment!
Please keep in mind that Crown of Broken Promises is a prequel to Crown of Night and Rain and highly recommend starting your reading journey through this series there.
Thank you to Grey’s Promotion and Susan Person for the opportunity to read this advance copy.
Susan Person has done it again!!! I DEVOURED this prequel! Crown of Broken Promises was exactly what I needed to fill the void while I await book two in the Night and Rain series.
Gemma and Laurel’s story is tender, magical, and completely gripping. Their connection feels both fated and forbidden in all the best ways. I loved seeing more of Laurel, Cyrus, and Gemma—and the deeper insight into their family history and the kingdom’s secrets was so satisfying.
This story gives depth to the worldbuilding and adds a rich emotional layer to the series. Ancient magic, royal duty, and a slow-burning bond that could shift everything? I’m all in.
If you love a strong heroine, protective magical creatures, and romance that risks everything—this one’s for you!
This faced paced story blends the fae world with unicorns. Gemma’s fierceness makes her one of my favorite type of characters as I love a strong and determined woman who follows her heart, even when everyone is telling her different. I really enjoyed how the author showed her story- giving me someone to cheer on.
Cyrus completely captured my attention and held onto it throughout, leaving me craving for more of his story.
Laurel’s ability to remain an authentic self was awesome to read! The character development is top notch- really pulling me into the story and I am excited to see what happens in the next part of the series.
Personally, I would have loved a bit more spicy parts, but overall I really enjoyed this book!
Thanks to the author and Grey’s Promo for this ARC. This is my honest review
*ARC REVIEW* started and finished in hours…one of those I stayed up til 1am to finish because I just HAD to.
This one is a prequel to book 1 which I also read as an ARC. I like the different fantasy “themes” present and combined into this series. Some may have thought it was too much, but they were simple/high level enough to not be confusing and make these books unique. The prequel follows Ari’s sister, Gemma and Prince Laurel. This prequel gives you their much-wanted story and unlock the mystery behind her disappearance and what happened before Ari “found” her. Badass FMC, a softie MMC who falls first, and a potential “why choose” trope? I won’t spoil it, read it…it’s fun and a quick intro into fantasy if you’re new to it.
Oh, my goodness, this prequel was the way to expand on Gemma’s story which we got glimpses of in the first book of the Empire of Curses and Dreams series. I am loving this series and the characters the author has created. They are all so compelling and well written that it is easy to get to know all of them and imagine, even empathize, with their every emotion. Particularly fascinating was the two worlds the author created. One realm with a distinct and completely disparate world reality where Gemma chooses to make her home with Laurel, and the one in which she was raised. This is a must-read prequel to the series that I highly recommend to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC received from Grey’s Promotions.
This is a prequel for the Empire of Curses and Dreams series. I love me some Rain in the first boom and was curious to read about his brother Laurel.
Laurel is the sensitive empath doctor/healer who is instantly drawn to Gemma when he crosses path with her in the forest. Her bonded unicorn Cyrus warned him what would happen if she strayed from the past....but of course that won't stop curiosity and stubbornness! I must say when Gemma finally snapped and got in a fight in the hallway I was cheering her on. I never liked that viper of a character anyway.
The unicorns in this series are a mystery. They are a vital part to magic and life, but they keep their secrets closely guarded...and their feelings too. I'm curious what will happen with their species and how the fae will be affected.
A hidden kingdom. Fading magic. Secrets revealed. What would you do if everything you thought was real ….. isn’t?
A Crown of Broken Promises is a story of mystery, learning, and love. In the pre-quel story to A Crown of Night and Rain, we get a chance to experience the backstory that started it all and reveals further truths in the battle for kingdoms.
Person’s writing is flawless and captivating as we follow Gemma, Cyrus, and Laurel and learn more about the kingdoms and the characters. The deeper understanding and knowledge in this book will open up even more questions and what ifs for the series to come.
If you’re looking for a tale of magic, betrayal, and a fight to save the world they know, A Crown of Broken Promises and the Crown of Night and Rain Series is for you.
I’ll start off by saying I did love the plot. It was a shorter read, so I get that many details are left out and such. I feel like Merrick’s entire character and contribution to the book was off. Like she was catty and manipulative, evil and vindictive… yet she just accept things so easily? Idk, maybe she’s involved in the dad making it out of the prison kingdom or something.
I adore Gemma and Laurel, I do but Cyrus?!? Ughhh my heart shattered. I love him so much, I actually cried tears when he departed. And then even after his departure, he still looked after his “bonded”. My heart couldn’t take it! And little Cyra Arianna, I hope that they can all reunite.
I loved the little revelations throughout the book, and I truly did enjoy it! I’m super excited to see what’s coming up next!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Susan Person has created magic with the Empire of Curses and Dreams world! Crown of Broken Promises is the related to the first book released in the series, but in chronological order the events take place before those in Crown of Night and Rain (Book 1). This was everything a reader wanted following up on the first book and yet so much more! Gemma and Laurel are light and love. Gemma’s curiosity and need for the truth makes her endearing and relatable. Laurel is Gemma’s perfect companion, outgoing, intelligent, challenging and charming. Wholeheartedly encourage everyone who enjoys fantasy to read and enjoy this series! Very much looking forward to the continuation of this story with Cyrus’s book!
I was so excited for Gemma & Laurels story and it did not disappoint! Their instant chemistry was undeniable. Cyrus oh Cyrus I wasn’t expecting him at all but gods did he not disappoint. The bond between all 3 of them is chefs kiss and I hope it’s not the last for the three of them and I’m excited to read his story next!
Also can we just swoon for Rain and Phina interactions cause that was adorable. Just saying he will make a great dad one day!
This is the second(but a prequel) in the series so please read the previous book first about Ari, Gemma’s sister and her story with Rain!
The RayView: ✨✨✨✨ The HeatRay: How It Be Spicin’?:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ . I was SO dang excited to dig into this novella and learn about Gemma’s story. Having read novel one as an ARC, I jumped at the opportunity to be on this ARC team as well. Hearing Gemma’s story and how she ended up in the kingdom beyond the forest answered so many questions I had from Crown of Night and Rain. Lemme tell you, I was NOT expecting that level of spice. The hinting should have given it away but I didn’t think it was gonna smack me in the face like that. I am so itching to get my hands on more of this world!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
5/5 stars! World building is phenomenal, characters are amazing! I’m absolutely obsessed with Cyrus. I want a bonded unicorn! I love the mystery that comes with the unicorns all the secrets and that they don’t follow anyone’s rules but their own. The FMC is fierce and just wants to protect her family! This is a why choose! Everything that she thought she knew was wrong and she goes through emotional battles on all fronts because of this and has to make extremely hard choices. But also who doesn’t want a prince? Overall fast read and it was amazing I love it! LOTS OF SPICE! Enemies to lovers. I would definitely recommend reading! -Kerin Ray
I enjoyed how this book jumps right into Gemma leaving and the details of her side of the story that we only had a portion of in the first book. It hooks you, keeps you and delivers a lot of story in a semi short book. It has a pretty fast pace that takes you through a lot in a book that length but doesn’t leave you feeling like you missed out on much. It is definitely a story that shows a different POV from the timeline of Arianna’s book and what was happening on the other side.
And the spice in this book, well it was unexpected, but 🔥🥵🔥🥵! Definitely didn’t see it coming, but no complaints here! I am excited for Cyrus’s book and can’t wait to see where his story takes us.
CYRUS!! OMG I LOVE HIM! And I want more of him! I need for him to have a happy ending! Seriously I’m so sad for him!
I really loved learning about Gemma and Laurel’s story! The chemistry and tension between them was fantastic. I think I could read about them forever! I loved how quickly she took the all the changes in her life! And Laurel is so sweet but also has a way with words……🥵 Like DAMN he hot! (And again don’t get me started on Cyrus!) He is my favourite unicorn so far (Sorry Marius).
I honestly cannot wait for Cyrus’s book and then I desperately need the next book in the series! I need to know what happens with Ari and River! 🙏
Fated mates. Forbidden magic. A bond unlike any other. In this dual-POV prequel, Gemma ventures into the Forbidden Forest and lands in enemy hands—only to discover everything she’s ever known is a lie. Between unraveling buried truths, ancient fae magic, and the pull of her bonded unicorn, Gemma must decide who to trust: the stranger who sees her... or the history that raised her.
Quick, addictive, and full of spark—this story had me hooked! It blends slow-burning tension with just the right amount of spice, setting the stage perfectly for Crown of Night and Rain. I can’t wait to dive back in.
