A Montreal comic series about Flavie, a snowmobile delivery person, her boyfriend, her bff and--in this volume, at least--a hot guy Flavie has a crush on, who seems to go to art openings all year long. The backdrop for the story is that nine years ago a nuclear power plant blew up and now it is "snowy" year round, and it continues to pile up.

It very much has a Giant Days (John Allison) style in terms of goofy story, light character development, glib dialogue and sweet cartoony drawing style and color. The weird thing is that this mainly seems to be about just "surviving" your twenties with little reference to the nuclear holocaust they are all facing, except that some people who have lived in areas of high radiation for years seem to have developed defects. So it's kinda like Chernobyl played for dark humor, or maybe it's just about ignoring the environmental crisis, don't worry, be happy, because hey, it's your twenties! The cute guy has a mean selfish girlfriend! Let's try to get them to break up! What a jerk! But maybe future volumes will begin to take it all seriously? I'm intrigued.

This reminded me if the cast of Giant Days graduated, moved to Montreal, and now were living through a nuclear winter. That's not a knock on this series. I love Giant Days. It just had a similar vibe and art but with mutants and everlasting winter thrown in as well.

Cute slice-of-life story, with very mild sci-fi radiation/mutant setting burbling in the background.

It's all very cozy, and, well.. cute. Nice palate cleanser between reading books.

Welcome Back!

Alright, we are in the middle of my graphic novel reviews (I think I read five or six in total before I began my next novel and I wrote my reviews for them in a row so expect the graphic novel reviews to be coming in a row for the next few days)! This is the next graphic novel series I picked up after finishing Saga vol 9. I saw an ad for this at the back of an issue of Giant Days and I was super intrigued so I went on Hoopla and looked it up (they have three volumes) so I downloaded the first to give it a go!

SPOILERS AHEAD

This graphic novel is set in Montreal where its winter forever! See there was a nuclear accident and now Montreal Canada is experiencing a nuclear winter full of radioactive snow that has cut off many parts of the city. The parts of the city that have been cut off are cut off because the snow has gotten so high there they can not move it out and no one can live there any longer (on top of radioactivity). Flavie lives here and works as a courier using a snowmobile to get around and make her deliveries. She is the only courier that is willing to go to the limits of the city to deliver items to customers. These are dangerous journeys and the limits will probably be the next places the city has to close off because of snow and radioactivity. There is an impending snowstorm (again) and Flavie is working her friend's shift when she has to go out to the limits in the storm to make a delivery. However, when she gets there one of the costumers is unhappy and forces her to do the work again (however, this time the other customer decides to go on the mission with her). During their journey, they meet irradiated animals, people, and try to survive the storm before Flavie has to battle!

This was a cute graphic novel and I enjoyed it! The art was really good and I loved the colors however, I wish there was more science and that it showed the impacts of the nuclear winter a little more. I think as the volumes continue we may see more of the fallout from the nuclear winter (such as more irradiated people and animals). I am giving this volume four stars on Goodreads. I am definitely planning to try volume two sometime in the future!

Just as adorable as the cover makes it look! I love the character and friendship development. Both magical realism and day-in-the-life. I am looking forward to volume 2!

*More like 3.5 stars than 3.*

A cute comic written in the same vein as Giant Days but with an added twist: an accidental nuclear fallout with noticeable consequences. The radiation caused increased snowfall, freak storms with comically large snowflakes, and mutations akin to creating monsters in some, and bestowing super powers in others.

It was unexpected to find that the obvious love interest character was already attached to someone, but then they went the cliche route of making his girlfriend a paper villain. The final standoff between her and the protagonist Flavie was exciting but quickly became extremely underwhelming after some Deus Ex Machina-type conclusion that left the whole vol feeling incomplete. Flavie was a good protagonist who was sure enough of herself to carry the story well, but it was noticeably convenient how her mutation didn’t render her a monster whereas almost everyone else’s mutations did, especially the villain girlfriend’s. That was indicative of some plot armour-type issues that this comic suffered from, but in the end it was clear that the characters’ shenanigans were not to be taken too seriously despite the semi-serious setting of a Canadian town suffering from enough radiation to make it a hazardous frozen environment.

I don't usually read books like this.
It's just not my thing. I'm more of a defeating guys who want to take over the world with laser beams sort of guy. But this was a nice cozy book. Even if the Author makes some choices that make it somewhat generic as a whole.

We follow Flavie who is in a town that has recently suffered from a nuclear factory explosion. This makes the weather all wonky and causing it to snow all the time. And how could I forgot giant snowflakes falling from the sky.

Not only is the whether all weird, but it also causes people to gain mutant abilities.
Cue X men theme

Our main character Falvie has an ability that is basically plot armor. Which of course comes in handy when fighting some evil chick. Everything just feels a bit cliche, we have an evil girlfriend, and a "will they won't they" dynamic, just to name a few. Which I guess is ok, since I ended up having a fun time reading it anyways. Which I guess is all that matters.

This was lovely, the only reason it's not 5 stars is the storytelling is a little rough. It's super cute, really fun and thoughtful. It could have been easier to follow but the art and the story were good, if a bit predictable. I wish it had a bit more complexity but that may have taken away from the delight.

The art was fun and a slice of life story set in a Montreal that is trapped in an eternal winter is certainly unique...but then the radiation makes people manifest super powers and that's all tossed out the window (Literally, in this case).

I'm also 100% done with the "Love Interest is already in a relationship but with a total asshole/bitch" trope .

📚 Hello Book Friends! It is Monday again and still very cold here. It is appropriate that I just finished NUCLEAR WINTER by Caroline Breault. This graphic novel is everything I hoped for: fun characters, beautiful illustrations, and an interesting story. Can you imagine a winter that lasts nine years? Well, this is exactly what is happening in Montreal after a major accident at a nuclear station. Flavie Beaumont avoids people as much as she can and works for a snowmobile delivery service. She is aware that the radioactive snow is starting to get to her and tries to keep her temper in check so that no one will know her secret. In this first volume, she will meet a popular guy who has an awful girlfriend; she will brave a major snowstorm to make her deliveries and fight mutants to save a baby raccoon to be eaten. All in a day’s work! I enjoyed this graphic novel, and I am looking forward to reading the next volume.

Triggers: Toxic Relationship portrayal; illness & disfigurement representation

Good bpc (book palate cleanser). Light hearted with some ass kicking sprinkled throughout. Fast but engaging read.

If you can get over the whole 'That's NOT how nuclear radiation works' flaws in the setting, you'll find a meet-cute relationship story that feels not too dissimilar to Scott Pilgrim, albeit from a female perspective. In a town suffering from Nuclear Winter that is slowly burying it under snow and mutations, a delivery girl crosses paths with a cute guy and makes some connections, while also dealing with mutants and annoying customers. There's a decent build-up and a number of the characters have moments to shine, but I never really connected with our protagonist. The art style is an integral part to why the story works as well as it does - if it had been either more realistic or more stylistic, I think the story would have collapsed under its own weight.
I don't know if I enjoyed it enough to want to read more, but for something I picked up just because it was free, it didn't feel like wasted time.

First up a big thank you to my hubby for giving this one for Christmas! I love Cab's art and I love dystopia (as I would call it that given the nuclear winter, the mutations, the people who got little or too much radiation). Meet Flavie (love her name) who delivers packages/mail/deliveries in a snow covered world. I loved finding out more about the girl and also to see what radiation did to her (HULK SMASH is all I will say). It was fun to see the world she lived in, though I would love to see more on how everything started, maybe a prequel??? We meet various characters, not always a fan of everyone. Though I loved Marcel. There is tons of giant snowflakes, some exciting moments, and more. I cannot wait to get the next volume, hopefully soon!

Lots of fun. A bit YA. I'm not the first to say it reminds me of Giant Days. But with mutants, giant snowflakes, and raccoons.

This is the kind of sweet, friend-centric fun that I'd come to expect from a Boom! comic, and for the most part Nuclear Winter is an enjoyable, if not especially deep read that feels like what we'd get if we mashed up Steven Universe and Gamma World. The big issue here, really, is that the whole thing ends right as it is just getting interesting, and as the narrative and its characters start having some real weight to them. Not everything needs to be 30 volumes long, but Nuclear Winter cut itself short at only three volumes.

A delightful short first volume that follows courier Flavie in an alternate Montreal experiencing nuclear winter (hence the title) and radiation. Has some great Giant Days/Futurama vibes with unique world building, but I'm with Kristin on my biggest critique - the bitchy girlfriend trope was unnecessary.

A Canadian winter that never ends.

It’s been nine years since an accident at a nuclear power plant plunged Montreal into an eternal winter; the city is now blanketed 365 days a year in radioactive snow. The nuclear accident has also effected the inhabitants in different ways— think gamma radiation and the Incredible Hulk.

Flavie Beaumont is a mail courier that makes deliveries on her snowmobile. Other than that, she’s a homebody. I would be too if I was stuck in an endless winter.

This was a very unique story and I’ll definitely be continuing the series. The polar raccoon was my favorite.

It was not at all what I expected when I originally picked it up. This is probably because I mainly expected the "post apocalypse" focus but it came to me more as a slice of life situation. The post-apo is more an excuse to sprinkle fantasy on it and is a bit weak on itself. The first volume was okay overall when you switch your expectations. I might end up reading the two other volumes because I have them already and it's kind of an easy cozy read for the weekend.

Not mind blowing but not bad either, just don't expect a strong post-apocalypse.
