Three explosive stories in one novel

- Love & Gunplay: After news of the attempted murder of his estranged fiancé, Gucci, Animal has two things on his mind, love and gunplay.
With the help of his mistress, the deadly Red Sonja, Animal manages to elude his captors in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and washes up on the shores of Miami, FL. He's one step closer to home, but it may as well have been a world away. Animal is still a wanted fugitive and getting to New York undetected proves to be trickier than he thought. This all changes when he meets an old friend of Red Sonja's, a New Orleans refugee named Diamonds.

Diamonds promises to provide Animal with safe passage from Miami to New York and all the firepower he will need to settle his blood debt, but he also brings something far more valuable to the table, the name of the man who shot Gucci.
Diamonds holds the key to unlocking the mystery of what really happened that tragic night in Harlem, but the information comes at a price.

Animal finds himself swept up into a deadly game of cat and mouse set in the glamorous Miami underworld of sex, drugs and violence, where cash is king and death is always lurking. His only ally is a mysterious stripper named Reign, who harbors a secret of her own that threatens to change everything.
.

- Purple Reign: Don B is the owner and headliner of a successful, yet notorious, record label called "Big Dawg Entertainment" where all it's stars seem to meet with unfortunate ends under mysterious circumstances. Don B made his fortune off music and his name from the trail of broken lives he's left in his wake. He is a predator in every sense of the word. Don B's wealth and power make him believe he's untouchable, but all this changes during a business trip to Miami and a chance meeting with a stranger who calls herself Reign.

- Little Nikki Grind:
After years of putting in work in the streets, Felon has finally saved up enough money to retire from the illegal life and pursue a legitimate career in the music industry. Having just inked a distribution deal for his fledgling entertainment company, Freak Show, Felon and a few of his closest friends decide to go out and celebrate at a new gentleman's club in New York called Purple City. It's at Purple City that he meets a young dancer named Nikki, who has a story to tell that will turn Felon's world upside down. When Felon is sucked into Nikki's web of sex, deceit and murder it threatens to ruin everything he's worked so hard to build and take him out of the game permanently.

In 2002 K'wan hit the scene with his debut novel Gangsta, under Triple Crown Publications. It was the first novel released by the budding house and would eventually become the building block for what is now a multimillion dollar company. What started as a therapeutic release went on to become a part of urban-lit history and an Essence bestseller, as well as drawing rave reviews overseas.
After penning his second novel, Road Dawgz (2003), K'wan drew the attention of St. Martins press. The literary powerhouse quickly signed K'wan to a multi-book deal, the first of which being Street Dreams (2004). In 2008 he received the Black Author of the year award from Black Press Radio for the novella Blow.
Since his insertion into the publishing world K'wan has been featured in Vibe, Pages, King, Felon, Big News, The Library Journal, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Press, Clutch and most notably Time Magazine, to name a few. He was also interviewed by MTV News for a feature on Hip-Hop fiction, and a guest on Power 105s morning show as well as NPR (national public radio). In addition to being an accomplished author, K'wan is also a motivational speaker, mentor to at risk children and the C.E.O of Black Dawn, Inc.
K'wan currently resides in New Jersey where he is working on his next novel.

I read Love and Gunplay as a separate read. As a recap, it basically serves an update for how Animal is able to leave San Juan and his arrival to Miami as a pit stop to New York. Animal made some friends and enemies while in Florida but he left with important names so bloodshed will soon follow.

Purple Reign is the story of one of the girls who work in Purple City. Which we learn is an establishment ran by the infamous Diamonds. Reign carries a grudge towards New York men especially rappers. So when Don B visits Purple City, he does not get the reaction he is use to.

Last but not least, we are introduced to Nikki Grind and we see what happened to her after the ordeal with Reign. Sis, really got herself into a pickle. And the way she decided to get herself out of it was beyond trifling! It’s why people believe you can’t fall in love with a stripper and can’t wife a hoe.

Three great short reads!

This book was great! It ties in some characters from the Animal series so it becomes a nice surprise when you hear some names from that book and get an even greater insight into their character and how they fit in the puzzle. In one of the Animal books, Zo sees Nicky somewhere and has a “where do I know her from?” moment… I had several AHA moments listening to this Purple City series!! K’wan keeps delivering and satisfying!…. On to the next book.

The books were good, but the narration was horrible. It was good getting more information on Animal's time in Miami on the way back to NY. Glad Don B finally got what he deserved. Nikki was a slick little something...

I’m gonna have to read this and not do the audiobook to give is a true rating because the narrator was awful. She was so monotonous and a total snooze fest. Don’t think it did the book justice. May come back and revise rating.

Good Read

Because it's K'wan it's readable without getting bored. Not as exciting as some of his other works. Try some of his other books as well.
