Clairolfaction - the ability of psychic smelling, such as diseases, hunger, or the smell of someone dying days, weeks or even months before they do.
Blue and Vince are just average teenage boys, going to school, hanging out with friends at the mall, playing games at the arcade. It’s a Saturday like every other Saturday until Blue sniffs a strange scent unlike anything he’s ever smelled before. Coming from a girl standing nearby, it’s a scent that makes him sick. And then the girl falls dead.
Blue’s father tries to convince him that he has a gift. He can warn people before they die. He can possibly save them. But in the real world, Blue is a freak, someone to be afraid of. Somehow, he knows when people are going to die.
Rejected by their friends and classmates, Blue finds solace with the one friend that refuses to abandon Vince. Even with Vince’s support, Blue struggles to come to terms with his gift. After meeting a man that has the same ability, Blue is convinced that he can use his ability to save lives. But his desire to help people becomes a nightmare as Blue vanishes into a sinister world of lies and betrayal. Desperate to find Blue, Vince devotes his life searching for him. Drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse, Vince is determined to save Blue even if it costs him his life.

What a great find this book was. For many years if the going got tough I would read the ending of a book... don’t hate me I was weak. After spoiling many a read with this bad habit I decided to stop doing it. Then I read Sour... this book had my fingers itching to skim. Was I tempted to fall back into old habits, oh yes. Did I resist this time? Yes I did and I’m giving myself one of these ⭐️ for showing such restraint. Go me. The thing is this is one of those books that the less you know the better it is. All I’m going to say is give it a go, it’s worth your time, it’s different and I dare you to not be full of theories right from the start. One more thing... Don’t read the ending, trust me you’ll be glad you didn’t when you get there.
I did deduct one star because of a couple of loosely tied up plot points. However, this did not spoil my enjoyment one bit.
Off to add more of this author to my very bloated tbr.
This book destroyed me. Completely. And I loved every second of it. This was one of most unique, intriguing stories I have ever read. It is definitely on my favorites shelf and will most probably make it to my books of the year list. It was that good. No. It was beyond that. I am not going to go into anything here about the story...I think each reader deserves to experience this one for themselves. Every reader's journey while reading this book should be their own. But, make no mistake about it...it will demolish you. I can't say enough about this one. Do yourselves a favor and read this. Now. Every reader should have this one on their 'want to read' shelf. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU.
Book alternates between the past and the present. The past is somewhat intriguing, but the present is self-consciously grimy. Blue is the interesting character, but it’s not his story. I don’t particularly understand why his family is so predatory towards Fire. All and all the story doesn’t gel.
This was definitely an interesting read. I like the author's writing style. I did kind of get lost/confused with everything coming together and fast in the last few chapters. I do wish we would have gotten more of Blue and his ability/curse, we only get to see him for a few chapters. It's sad that Blue and Fire were surrounded by so many awful people. I have a few more of this author's books in my TBR that I'll have to start making a dent in.
