Things I learned:
- Gabrielle Chanel was sent to a covent nun orphanage with her sisters after her mother died.
- She had two well-off men obsessed with her and wanted invest in her dreams to become a modiste— one she actually loved, the other was initially someone who she hung out with.
- She hated fuss and frills, dressed masculinely and stuck with simplicity.
- The war was a huge prompt for her original clothing lines— emphasizing utility and modernism.
- Her one true love she claimed with Boy Capel, who she did not ever marry due to varying social status’, and he was killed after marrying someone else in a car accident. The double C’s in the brands logo are compared to their relationship— bounded together but pulling apart in different directions… So CC not for Coco Chanel but maybe Chanel-Capel, perhaps?
- She had created “The Slavic Period” look, after inspiration from Eastern European men, but imo this was ugly. It was even referred to as “The Peasant Look” however it was very successful.
- Her flapper period was more intricate, with its main purpose being more movement for the legs while dancing.
- Her English period — which involved a lot of the well known tweeds, was greatly due to her involvement and 10 year affair with the Duke of Westminster. So in a way, while she was French, a lot of the influence came from the English - gasp.
- Okay woah this woman was lowkey so problematic 😂 ber workers go on strike for more pay during war, she lays them all off, shes down & runs away, comes back to the germans taking over and then starts working with one and Winston Churchill??? Then the aforementioned Duke of Westminster comes to bail her out. I’m geeked. Reputation is shot, she bails again…
- To continue the lore, she returns like 14 years later because she misses work and she’s pissed off Dior’s shifting female attire to cater for the male gaze, she wants to bring back the option to women to dress for comfort and utility, but gets shot down by press. It was the AMERICAN press like American vogue who idolized her designs and continued to push it until the rest of the fell back in line. Okay purr America
- Ugh she’s so iconic for dressing Jackie Kennedy, grace kelly, elizabeth taylor… my ego would be HUGE
- Ugh and to conclude King Karl coming in to revitalize her brand post death. I love how he honored her brand and continued using her palettes of color and material to uphold her quality of work.

The first of my Christmas presents finished. This was a gift from my Aunty who sparked my love of fashion when I was a teenager. The book is separated into the different eras of Coco’s life and definitely educated me on things I didn’t know. Very interesting read for a fashion lover, and a lovely gift. Problem is I now want to collect all the Little Book fashion series and I want something Chanel! Both expensive problems!

a fun read for sure but it could’ve used another editor or two on it. it’s good if you’re just looking for the basic story and great for imagery, but lacking a lot of depth. glosses over some more interesting design aspects in favor of highlight coco’s personal life and many flings which i could’ve done without.
