The Dragonfate Games #7

Alpha Dragon's Wolf

Rate this book
Can a white wolf heal the darkness of a dragon’s heart?Viol is his own worst enemy. Years after a tragic incident of his own creation, he hides behind intimidating black leather and a spiky attitude. Love only causes him pain, and shoving people away is easier than letting them in—even the one soul he adores more than anything.

Poppy is as loyal as he is patient. He’s waited six seasons for his fated mate to acknowledge him only to go home empty-pawed each time. But the omega wolf refuses to give up on his hurting dragon, and when he’s offered a private invitation to the island, he seizes his chance.

Because Poppy is determined to save Viol—just like Viol saved him all those years ago.

Alpha Dragon’s Wolf is a sweet mpreg novel featuring a moody alpha dragon, a gentle omega wolf, and a pile of plushies. Reading the series in order is recommended. No cheating, and fluffy HEA guaranteed!

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

I have been waiting for this book since the very beginning, and while it was sad and so very sweet – Poppy is the best – it wasn’t a full score for me. I think the change in Viol from ‘I’m a monster and don’t deserve you’ to being an all-in smiling jokester (like, what??) happened way too abruptly and wasn’t very believable. 15 years of denial and self loathing does not just go away after one conversation. It also needed a lot more beta editing, all the little mistakes in character position and similar things really took me out of the story.

My issues with the book aside, it was fun to finally get the full story of what happened between Poppy and Violet in the past, and to see them reunite. Poppy has been my favorite character through the entire series and it made me really happy to see him finally get his happy ending. The shifted scenes were cute, and I wish there was even more of them.

I jabbed my finger towards the window. “Why is there a plane outside?” Alaric examined his perfectly manicured nails. “Typically, that’s where planes fly.”

I wanted to tell him how I felt. How badly I yearned for his companionship. How I was only able to bear the pain of revisiting those dark memories because of his presence in them.

“Poppy,” I rasped. “I missed you real bad. Every fucking day of my life.” His back tensed for a split second before it started to tremble. I could tell he was struggling not to cry. He nodded, burying his face in the crook of my neck. “I know,” he whispered. “I did, too.”

“Wanna grab breakfast?” “Yes!” Then I paused and flicked back my ears. “Oh, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can shift back right now...” Viol shrugged. “Who said anything about shifting? Human, wolf—I love you in every shape, Poppy.” My pelt rippled as every hair stood on end. Whimpering again, I rubbed against Viol’s leg, thumping my tail back and forth. He chuckled and smoothed a hand along my flank.

To be honest, I expected much more from this book. I’ve been waiting through the entire series for the one that would finally focus on Viol and Poppy, but in the end it all felt a bit underwhelming. I was so excited to finally learn more about Viol (his horde) and his connection to Poppy, but everything was just rushed or, sometimes, even boring.

In trying to show their past, the book ended up neglecting and rushing their present-day relationship. I should mention that I’m generally not a fan of plots that spend too much time jumping back into the past, especially when the chapters are constantly interrupted by flashbacks. If it really has to be done, I prefer when the story covers the past first and then moves on to the present.

I thought I would be absolutely thrilled with this book, but… I wasn’t.
I’m giving it three stars, maybe I’d even give it less, but I simply can’t bring myself to do that after waiting so long for their story.

“No matter what blocks our path, we’ll always find our way to each other again”.

+3.5 :Subjetivamente

2.5: Objetivamente

“You know, Viol. The world is only what you make of it”.

I was on the fence with this book. I loved getting to see Poppy and Viol’s pasts and to get a better understanding of them as people. Poppy was adorable and Viol was the spiky version of adorable. The direction chosen for their reunion was good too. However, I felt like more of their shared trauma needed to be discussed between them. It took away from their reconnecting imo. I’m excited for Gaius’ book

With no antagonist and no conflict this book really fell flat. The explanation as to why poppy and viol couldn't be together for 15 years didn't seem believable. Any big emotions from the separation are just swept under the rug 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I was excited for this book from a long time but the execution was done really bad. So much building of the angst for nothing.

A MM paranormal romance which I'd been so excited to read! It's Dragon x Wolf, Omegaverse, A Grump who's so sweet to his Fated Mate, Second chance, Hurt/Comfort, Quite the Slowburn (with dash of insta), cute plushies, Adorable meddling family/friends & a love that was long time coming.
This one was the darkest in the series (the flashbacks 🥺). Also, no games (did u really think Viol will do them? Lol). Loved Viol & Poppy 🥹. Savored this in 10hrs over 2days. I started this the day before my exam 😂, couldn't resist as it was out already.

🐺Poppy is Omega Wolf shifter. He's so sweet, kind, gentle & ridden with anxiety. But he's also resilient, brave. I loved seeing how P's calm & soothes Viol when V panics 😭.
🐲Viol is Alpha Dragon shifter. He's a short-tempered, angry grump in leather. He's goofy, caring, protective under the defensive walls. V's nerves/guilt hurt 🥺, I'm glad he's got P (finally!). V's the middle child lol.

These 2 are such anxious beans 😩 *hugs*. Gosh, Viol met Poppy, his mate so many years ago. He could've gotten his HEA long ago, dammit 🥺. That freaking cult, assholes! They broke innocence 😭. I'd wondered if there's a misunderstanding as P kept coming to games, while V avoided P, but not really lol. Those flashbacks edged me HARD 😂. Why owl 🦉!

This story's somehow both Slowburn (they made us waittt) & Insta-Love (as fated mates). I liked their awkwardly cute interactions, so happy when they finally cleared the air of past & got together again 😍, hotties 😉 & plushies 😩☺️. Eachother's only 😭💞. It's Low angst in present ngl, but the past HURT (I was scared at times!). The climax was a good surprise, adored the m-preg & cute ending 🥰.

I liked we see everyone a lot here. I sympathized V not wanting to do the Games, tho I get his family wanted V to find love as they'd've. I'm excited that Gaius'll get a book 😍. There were a few typos, but oh well 🤷‍♀️. I was mad at Sorrell but he got sweet.

I did've questions, about lore & stuff. Tho, maybe these get answered in a previous book I've not read. Will read 'em all soon hopefully!

I'm so happy that Poppy finally got his happily ever after!!
I basically waited years for this book and I'm so glad it's finally here.

I loved Poppy since book one. Seriously love him! He is one of my absolute favorite book characters, not just in this series but in general. He is the SWEETEST.
I like Viol too and I'm super glad that he is Poppy's mate. Though his actions pissed me off.

This book was full of yearning and pining. The way they longed for each other was breaking my heart. I cried a bit, not gonna lie. The love they felt for each other was pulling at my heart strings.

I normally dislike flashbacks in books but here I didn't mind it that much. After a while though, I got impatient and wanted to finish the story from 15 years ago. It dragged on.

That's my main issue, again the time jumps were okay and even interesting, I was involved in what happened but it took a lot of pages. I would be totally fine with the length, if we got more pages of current Poppy and Viol, especially when he was pregnant or when they waited for their kid to hatch. I was really disappointed when the end of the book came closer and closer and they still weren't pregnant. The first dick in butt sex took place after about 88% of the book, while in the other books they jumped each other's bones basically immediately. Not that the sex part is important to me but I wanted to see more of their relationship.
I LOVED that they were it for each other. Eventhough they didn't see each other for years they still didn't have anything with anybody else.

The tail wagging though, it is my kryptonite and Poppy became such a happy person. Ugh it was so cuuuuuute.

I couldn't put the book down, I started reading it as soon as it hit my kindle and finished it in one sitting. I loved this book even though I was disappointed and wished for something more? I'm glad that Gaius gets a book, I was really hoping for it.

I just don't like stories with so many flashbacks. And not mpreg anyway. But somehow I always come back to Oakleys books because they are (usually) so fluffy, silly and good palate cleaner. Next time I'll skip the whole mpreg thing again. I just think it is so cringe every time.
Viol and Poppy are cute, but communication? What is communication? Talk with each other ... 🤦🏻‍♀️
And at some point the scheme is really boring. Always only Alpha x omega and mpreg? Really? Why not alpha x alpha, ace, omega x omega, or they don't want children at all... Yes, I know, a very unusual/alien thought... 🤯🤷🏻‍♀️

Built up all the anticipation for the end just to crash and burn in a fireball of disappointment.

In the world of reading, there are few things more frustrating than building up the anticipation for a book across all the previous in a series, in this case SIX BOOKS, just for the pivotal moment to finally arrive and the highly desired book is totally lacking and underwhelming. I’ve been waiting for Poppy and Viol’s book since book ONE, and majority of it just didn’t make sense to me. They knew they were mates, clearly knew each other would be on the island, and while the other dragons did everything they could to be with their mates, Viol just… does nothing???? I understand the idea behind it due to the trauma, but it just didn’t fit with the nature of the dragons. They’re immediately possessive of their mates and can’t stay away, so Viol being essentially a hairsbreadth away from Poppy for six seasons and doing nothing just doesn’t make sense. I’m also all for a few flashbacks to build that background of how Poppy and Viol began their relationship, however having flashbacks for half the book was annoying. And it was never clear when it was a flashback or when it was present-day until you read a few sentences. It needed to be distinguished better. I expected more on how Poppy and Viol mended and built their relationship up in the present.

This series, especially in the later half, was continuity issues GALORE!!!!
- In Cobalt’s book you have Cobalt chasing down Viol to prevent him from leaving the island, but in Viol’s book Cobalt lets him go willingly.
- In Aurum’s book, Viol is the second oldest but in Viol’s book he’s actually the third oldest and Jade is second oldest.
- In Saffron’s book, Poppy is supposed to be Konrad’s child bearer before disappearing BUT IN THE VERY NEXT BOOK Poppy’s brother Sorrel is actually selected to be the child bearer.
- The POV of who is speaking changing mid chapter and suddenly you have a character speaking in third person until it changes back to the correct POV.

Honestly, if you’re planning a 7 book interconnected series, you should at the very least put in all the time and effort to plan out plot lines and the overarching world correctly. There’s no reason backstories should vary from book to book. It’s pretty aggravating and takes you out of the story, so much so I took a 3 month break from it. Matter fact, don’t even use bonus scenes to build up the next world/series UNLESS your current one is done properly.

I have been waiting for this book for 3 years.
I just love this two, I Have been Riding at dawn for them from the start.
With all that said, Why haven't we got a hoard kink in this book??
I also think that maybe we could have had even more drama, but I knew from the start that this series is not like that so I'm not dissapointed.

This was such a good place to end the series (for now 😉). It was sweet and fluffy with the right amount of angst thrown in. I loved that we finally got to see Viol and Poppy getting to have their happily ever after, after being teased throughout the whole series! I also loved that they had met a very long time ago and finally got to reconnect for a second chance. And I loved that we got to see the dragons actually leaving the island in this book! It was fun to see a bit more of the world outside of the island where most of the series takes place. This was such a good read and I’m a little sad that it’s over. Alpha Dragon’s Wolf is getting four out of five stars!

Very sweet read indeed ✨

I think this is by far the heart aching read from the series, the other book are full of sweetness and jokes + some hate/love romance. But this one are full on anxiousness, negative thinking and self hate from the start…. Yet i am glad it slowly come into a healing read and become sweet as ever 💕

The thing that happen to them are a tragedy yet it is also the event that make them know each other. Didn’t expect the last dragon to be with his mate is actually the first to find his mate ✨ 15 years of attempting to forget their moments together + Poppy effort on going to all 6 season in hope to be connected to Viol…. Ended up they just need a bit of forced proximity by dear Jade brilliant idea 👀

PS: Didn’t expect Viol full name is Violet… legit softened him up, kinda understand why he choose to go with Viol after the change —— that name legit give him the vibe ✨👀 + he is hella cute when he was small glad to read that small snippets of it 💖

I Wanted To Love This But Didn’t

I have been anxiously awaiting Poppy and Viol’s story and was so excited to learn the truth about their shared history. Unfortunately I was really disappointed in the whole thing.

Their backstory was interesting and honestly worked really well for both characters. However, after reading six other books about these dragon brothers finding their mates and going completely nuts for them, it was never going to work to suddenly have a story where Viol found his fated mate, and chose to completely abandon him for fifteen years! Especially with zero attempt to keep an eye on him.

We’ve heard in other books how the alphas are always wanting to provide and make sure their mates are taken care of, so even if Viol didn’t think he deserved Poppy, how are we supposed to believe he didn’t make sure Poppy had a place to live or money to live on? That didn’t fit to the character and books we’ve read already in the series.

I also find it hard to believe that Viol and Poppy were near to each other for what must have been six or seven years and yet neither found a way to see each other or attempt to reach out.

What also bothered me were the inconsistencies from previous books in the timelines. Poppy’s pregnancy lasted almost six months where the others were described as being only a month before the egg was birthed and maybe another month or two before it hatched. I found it really distracted me from the book to notice all those small inconsistencies.

I’m happy I read the series and I had a lot of fun with it but I wish it ended on a higher note.

Huh. I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I think if it had been a standalone, it would have been easier to rate = readable but not memorable, and quite possibly a DNF. I just need to accept that the author writes very... childishly? That sounds super condescending, but idk what else to call it. And I don't just mean Viol's dialogue and characterization, although definitely that - like, he's 32? I mean, I don't know what that is in dragon years but he went on his adventure at 17 and this is 15 years later, so... Anyway, it's just that the writing voice overall is very teenage fanfic, which kinda gets old fast, but I already knew that and keep picking up occasional books from this author anyway for some quick, usually fluffy escapism (although not so much with the "fluff" in this one).

But for some reason, even knowing all that, I was a little extra disappointed in this book.

Maybe because felt like a cheap plotting trick. Like, it's fantastic to have hidden backstory for mysterious side-characters like Viol (side character = prior books), but to really sell it, there has to be enough hidden foreshadowing to really give it some substance when it's finally revealed, IMHO. But I think the true root of my disappointment is Poppy. He's adorable, and has been for the whole series. But the way he's portrayed in this one just feels off. Maybe because so much of the story was shown in flashback? Like, literally half of it, lol... and maybe that's just a me thing, since I haaaaaaaaaaaaate present day storylines that rely so heavily on flashbacks.

Annnnnyway... I'm sorely tempted to call it a two-star no thanks read for me, but I did finish it - even if the last third was just skimming - and Poppy definitely deserves his HEA, even though I'm underimpressed with Viol in general, and with both of them for

But despite all that ranting, this silly little series has provided some cute, (mostly) fluffy escapism that I've (mostly) enjoyed, so what I might have hated on in a standalone book, I had a little more investment and patience for in this one. 🤷‍♀️ So three stars it is! AND I'll very likely pick up Gaius's book, too. 🤣🤣🤣

I've been waiting for Poppy and Viol's story foreverrrrr and it did not disappoint! I completely and utterly died over these two and their whole story. It killed me how they met when they were younger. How happy and optimistic and full of life and brightness Violet was back then. I died over Poppy in the tundra clan and how he wanted to protect his little brother from their clan alpha and how he risked everything for Sorrel. I loved how they met and how there was an instant spark and how things were supposed to go so well, and then how terribly things turned. I died over Violet trying to protect both brothers and how he lost himself and how he blamed himself for everything. I died over how he got Poppy to safety and didn't leave until he was safely with a teenage Taylor. I loved them and died over getting all the history between them and how we ended up here.

I love that there were no Games in this book, because that isn't something either Viol or Poppy would enjoy. I love that Jade invited Poppy to the island and how he gets to spend time with Viol without other omegas getting in the way. I love how he's already a part of the family long before anything rekindles between him and Viol. I love how much the omegas and everyone love Poppy, because he's the best and the sweetest and everything good in the world.

Viol and Poppy finally getting a second chance was so amazing and beautiful. I love how Poppy didn't let Viol push him away. I love how Viol finally realized that he didn't want to anymore. I love these two and I died over them talking through everything and getting to be together. I love that they got to take their time. I love that they got to work through everything. I love that they returned to the tundra clan and freed the omegas and gave them better lives.

One of my favorite and unexpected things in this series has been the friendship between Poppy and Alaric. I love how Alaric was a part of every important conversation Poppy had with the omegas in this book. I love that he was the one to see that there was something between Viol and Poppy. I love that he is so defensive and protective of the wolf. They are so perfect and I love them. And I love Taylor also always being there for Poppy. And Rorik and how they connected over their past.

I just loved everything about this beautiful story and how these two finally got their happily ever after. I died over how long Poppy waited and how he thought Viol didn't want him anymore. I love that Viol has finally healed after fifteen years and died over Saffron and Aurum commenting on his new personality, because they never even really knew the old Viol. (that one line in the past about Poppy's heart breaking when Viol's innocent heart was broken over seeing the cruelty in the world destroyed me). This was everything I wanted out of their story and completed my heart. This was perfect. I loved every moment and I love this big, goofy family. I love how much they love one another.

Also, now I can't wait for Gaius and Horatio's story! I'm dying, because that is going to be so fun and hilarious!

The Dragon Fate Games is an imaginative series, and the seventh installment, Alpha Dragon's Wolf, is, in a word, fantastic. It is exciting, original, and moving, with wonderful character development for both main characters, Viol and Poppy.
This book is just as compelling, exciting, and moving as the other parts in this series. And in my experience, this part has a strong connection with the fifth part, Alpha Dragon's Cat, in terms of theme. Jade and Viol are both caregivers in different ways. Jade does so rationally and Viol is more intuitive, which for me was a strong contrast and also a similarity between the two brothers.
Viol Chromatimaeus is the most mysterious brother, and his development is amazing. In the previous books, he is subtly present, making him a counterpart to his often extroverted brothers. In the previous books, the reader is given intriguing facts about Viol in small doses, which make them curious. In the seventh part, the history of Viol and Poppy is revealed, and it is intense, tender, traumatic, vulnerable, and loving. Oakley knows how to present the story of his main characters to his readers in a convincing and compelling way.
There is also an intriguing tension between Viol and Jade with regard to what Karl Jaspers calls “self-forgetfulness.” In my experience, Jade is self-aware, which gives him power as a character. He is confident as a partner, father, brother, and producer and has a strong presence. Viol is traumatized by an event from the past, which makes him more of a background character. His development from the perspective of “self-forgetfulness” is so pure that the reader thinks, wow, Hawke Oakley is an amazing writer!
In addition, there is a motif in the book that is also present in other parts, namely stuffed animals. In this book, in my experience, they have an ambiguous meaning that gives the story a special dynamic. They can be seen as a reference to love, security, and strong emotions, trauma, and memories. The author has done a great job with this as well.
Both main characters are shape-shifters. And in that way, they embody the theme of this book for me. To me, Viol symbolizes more than just adaptability, fluidity, and the ability to survive in a strange environment. He also represents hidden nature, or having secrets. His growth shows the possibility of escaping his past and becoming himself with the help of the healing power of love.
And so Alpha Dragon's Wolf becomes a wonderful seventh installment in The Dragon Fate Games series. In this book, the reader not only gets to know Viol, but also learns to understand him. With regard to his brothers, there is a strong connection with Jade, which creates both a contrast and a similarity. Hawke Oakley has surpassed himself with this book.

As with most of the Dragonfate Games, this book was all about enjoying a ride to the obvious ending. In this respect, it didn't disappoint. The author shook up the usual formula in order to emphasize the unique situation of brother #7 that's been hinted at in the previous books. I enjoyed the change, which fully embraced the inevitable conclusion and provided satisfying road blocks along the way. I was worried about certain characters changing their behaviour too much to be believable, but that did not happen.

Unfortunately, providing the expected happy ending is impossible without sacrificing the tension that would make this part of the story so much more engaging. By book #7, the reader has learned what to expect (correctly), which makes certain outcomes impossible even though the story is written with a "will they / won't they" type of drama in multiple chapters. The ride to the end is still enjoyable, but less so than in the books with lower stakes (where the author was able to produce a negative outcome without changing the ending).

Overall, a fun read, and if you've made it to book #7 you can't not finish the series, and it's worth your time to do so.

**3.5 STARS**

I liked this story but I didn't love it, and after six books of anticipation, that's exactly what I expected to happen. The story is as much about Viol and Poppy's past as it is about their budding romance.

My main issues lie in the fact that the flashbacks made up way too much of the story and took up way too much of the time. This build up, Viol avoiding Poppy for 15 years, 6 rounds of DragonFate Games, all summed up to essentially a miscommunication had me wanting to throw my Kindle across the room. Viol and Poppy deserved more... hell I deserved more.

I don't know, Viol and Poppy are both clearly in love with each other, they just avoid each other and then magically declare one another fated mates and live happily-ever-after. There was no transition, no apologies for the years of anguish that Viol put Poppy through, the story just desperately needed something. And then to tack on additional drama with the Tundra Clan, I was truly annoyed that Poppy and Viol literally didn't get a moment of peace.

They deserved better, I was hoping for a nice wrap up chapter, as I usually see at the end of these long interconnected series, but no such thing here. Meh...that's how I feel finishing this...meh.

Honestly, I was a little let down with this one. I think it was a little rushed, and it could've been more. We've gotten so many sweet hints from Violet throughout the series, and in the last book we got backstory on his mysterious personality. My first gripe is the continuity error in this book. During the beginning of Rory's book we get a glimpse of Sorrel and what Rory has to say. He mentions how "Sorrel's older brother was supposed to be Konrad's top child-bearer before he disappeared in the avalanche's chaotic aftermath" (pg 6.) BUT we learn in this book that Poppy was originally chosen as a hunter and Sorrel was the chosen one child bearer. Also, Sorrel was chosen as a child-bearer but again in the previous book Rory mentions Sorrel waiting to be chosen as a child-bearer for knox so im a little confused. I also feel like after how much Viol was built up we were let down a little bit. All of that to say, i still thoroughly enjoyed the book and most likely will read it again in the future.

Really good, but...

Like most MM stories I've read. Its a majority male cast and the few female cast are points of conflict. This one is the same. While the have been male-centered conflict, it fits because up to this point it has been a all male cast. But this and the previous book had the ONE prominent female character be the villian. It would have been better to just have kept the all male cast. I guess its not a giant issue. But really annoying once you notice the trend in KU male queer books. The flashbacks dragged on just a tad too much and I think that some of it should have been combined. That's when the appreciation of it not taking up whole chapters comes in. Since at some point I was over the past and wanted to focus on their story in the present. There wasn't enough of the couple in the Present.

After reading books 1-6, this couple was the one I was the most excited to read. That's why I wish they had more Present scenes and less flashbacks. Still a really good book and I don't regret binging this series.

I’ve been waiting the entire series for Poppy & Violet’s love story…and then it sorta flopped. There was so much potential to put spins on the formula for the series. Violet could have refused to be on the games so instead, they could have made Poppy the star of the show and have alphas fighting over him. They could have had Poppy stolen by the clan while he was unknowingly pregnant. There could have been DRAMA. Instead, it was a bit sterile. I like them together but the book just didn’t give me what I wanted. I teared up a few times but again, overall just meh. Plus the way the book was structured, it felt like it was wrapped up and then you still had like 40% of the book to read. Then it felt done again with the clan scene…and then it went on again. There wasn’t much uniqueness to their story, the sex scenes were LAZY, and overall it just gave nothing. I feel this rating is generous even.
