There exists a hotel like no other. It acts as a waystation, existing not entirely in what most people call reality. This enigmatic building is under the auspices of Cleo, the Muse of History. She is the archetype of a benevolent force, the yin that exists to balance the universe’s raging yang. Within these walls, she is the director and focal point of a group of castoffs with specialized abilities. Backed up by technology and arcana, they do her bidding, pitting themselves against the agents of chaos who seek to sow dissent. Little do they suspect, though, that they are about to be put to the test like never before.
The Delphi, by David Rogers, is a literary oddity that defies categorization. Certain aspects of it are reminiscent of The Umbrella Academy, the comic book turned TV series. Some readers might be reminded of movies like Four Rooms or Barton Fink.
Cleo, the beating heart of the hotel, is the emotional core of this story. She is framed as a not-quite-human entity tasked with quietly moving chess pieces behind the scenes of reality, nudging the world back into a more logical direction when it seems in danger of spinning off its axis. She is like Charles Xavier, gathering together individuals with extraordinary abilities. Rather than mutants, though, her team consists of the forgotten and downtrodden, flotsam who for one reason or another fail to adhere to societal standards. They have skills that set them apart, and they’re backed up by an amalgamation of technological marvels and arcane forces.
If all of this sounds pretty strange, that’s because it is. That seems to be part of what Rogers is going for, as he blurs the line between fantasy and reality. That is the gray area in which Cleo and company exist, influencing events in ways humans never entirely realize. A frightful enemy, when it reveals itself, is a direct challenge to this ragtag band and their guidance. Watching the two sides battle it out is thrilling, and learning more about this alternate reality that Rogers has created is just as much fun as waiting to see who’s going to come out on top.

The Delphi by David Rogers is a fast-paced, suspenseful story into what happens behind the scenes of our world. What if you could learn how everything operates and who truly controls those who achieve power, with serious implications that could derail democracy without intervention? Robin Sparrow was living a successful life as an investment banker. Still, in a split second, everything changed when he was suddenly snatched away by strangers, changing the trajectory of his existence forever. What appears to be a kidnapping shifts into much darker business as Robin dives into a world of conspiracies and what happens beyond the veneer of everyday life. Then, he meets Cleo, who leads him and a group of others into this new reality.
The story starts on the ground, running, taking the reader through an intricate underworld of action-packed intrigue and action. I enjoyed the book from the very beginning, which sets the pace for a thrilling read, as one mystery or problem to be solved reveals another layer of development in the plot. Rogers does an amazing job of drawing the reader into the characters’ lives and their individual dilemmas.
I really enjoyed the pace of the book, as it weaves through different scenes and twists along the storyline. It’s a unique espionage-like thriller that combines mystery and elements of science fiction with the riveting aspects of what happens to an individual when their entire life and career are suddenly erased, and they are forced to fulfill a new destiny completely.
The Delphi by David Rogers is an exciting story that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a solid plot with unrelenting action and layers of plot twists. It’s an easy read with a smooth but quick narration that kept me on my toes until the very end! It’s a great book for fans of adventure, espionage, and dystopian science fiction.

The Delphi by David Rogers is a captivating blend of fantasy and science fiction that kept me hooked from start to finish. The characters are incredibly well-crafted, each with their own unique abilities and depth that make them stand out. I was particularly intrigued by Robin Jay Sparrow, an investment banker who believes money can solve any problem, only to find himself in situations where that belief is challenged. The supporting characters, like Leif, Frank, Miranda, and Cleo, are equally fascinating, each bringing something special to the story.
What I loved most about this book is how it pulls you into its world. The story is filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to find out what would happen next.
