Book Review: Alan Hovhaness: Unveiling One of the Great Composers of the 20th Century by Hinako Fujihara Hovhaness

Hinako Fujihara Hovhaness’s Alan Hovhaness: Unveiling One of the Great Composers of the 20th Century is a deeply personal yet rigorously analytical tribute to the life and work of one of modern classical music’s most enigmatic figures. As the composer’s widow, Fujihara Hovhaness brings an intimate perspective to this biography, blending firsthand anecdotes with scholarly insights to illuminate Hovhaness’s creative genius, spiritual depth, and enduring influence. The book serves not only as a definitive biography but also as a critical reassessment of a composer whose work—often overshadowed by his contemporaries—deserves renewed attention.

Content and Themes

The book traces Hovhaness’s journey from his early years as a prodigy to his later status as a prolific yet underappreciated composer, exploring the cultural and philosophical forces that shaped his distinctive voice. Key themes include:

Spirituality and Mysticism: Hovhaness’s profound connection to Eastern spirituality, particularly Armenian liturgical music and Japanese Gagaku, and how these influences infused his compositions with a transcendent quality.

Innovation and Tradition: His synthesis of Western classical forms with non-Western scales and improvisational techniques, challenging the avant-garde orthodoxy of his time.

Struggle for Recognition: The tension between Hovhaness’s commercial successes (e.g., Mysterious Mountain) and his marginalization by critics who dismissed his work as overly accessible or esoteric.

Legacy and Revival: The posthumous resurgence of interest in Hovhaness’s music, fueled by contemporary musicians and scholars who champion his eclecticism and emotional resonance.
Fujihara Hovhaness balances biographical narrative with musical analysis, offering detailed examinations of key works while contextualizing them within broader 20th-century trends.

Strengths

Unique Insider Perspective: The author’s personal relationship with Hovhaness provides unparalleled access to his creative process, private struggles, and unpublished works.

Interdisciplinary Depth: The book seamlessly integrates musicology, cultural history, and biography, appealing to both specialists and general readers.

Revelatory Archival Material: Rare photographs, letters, and manuscript excerpts enrich the narrative, shedding light on Hovhaness’s collaborations and inspirations.

Accessible Analysis: Technical discussions of Hovhaness’s harmonic language and rhythmic structures are presented with clarity, avoiding jargon without sacrificing sophistication.

Areas for Improvement

Limited Critical Distance: The author’s personal connection occasionally leads to a overly reverential tone, with less scrutiny of Hovhaness’s weaker works or professional missteps.

Underdeveloped Comparative Analysis: While Hovhaness’s uniqueness is emphasized, more direct comparisons to contemporaries (e.g., Partch, Cage, or Messiaen) could have sharpened the argument for his significance.

Structural Repetition: Certain anecdotes and themes recur redundantly, particularly in later chapters.

Score Breakdown (Out of 5)
Research and Originality: 4.8/5 (A treasure trove of primary sources, though slightly partisan)
Narrative Cohesion: 4.5/5 (Engaging but occasionally meandering)
Thematic Breadth: 4.7/5 (Comprehensive, yet could delve deeper into critical reception)
Analytical Rigor: 4.6/5 (Insightful for musicians, though lay readers may crave more context)
Emotional Resonance: 5/5 (A moving homage that transcends academia)
Overall Rating: 4.7/5

Alan Hovhaness: Unveiling One of the Great Composers of the 20th Century is an indispensable contribution to music scholarship and a heartfelt act of devotion. Fujihara Hovhaness’s dual role as witness and scholar results in a biography that is as emotionally compelling as it is intellectually rigorous. While a more critical lens might have strengthened its academic impact, the book’s warmth and authority make it essential reading for anyone seeking to understand Hovhaness’s singular vision. It succeeds admirably in its mission: to secure his rightful place among the giants of 20th-century music.

The word that comes to mind after reading this is passion. Alan Hovhaness's passion for his work, but also the passion Hinako had for his life's work as well.

The complete devotion to bringing his life and work back to life through this biography does not go unnoticed. She does an amazing job of sharing so much more than you think you will get.

Throughout this, you are taken through so many facets of his life that made him who he was and allowed him to connect to his fans.

This is a unique book. It's a story of the life of a composer but told with such passion through the words/poems of Hinako Fujihara-Hovhaness.

Well-written and with clear language, this biography paints a realistic picture of the obstacles faced by Hovhaness striving to succeed and experiences from the top.

Really appeals to those who love music and can feel the music through words.
