Momma,
We arrived at Verus, whole and mostly unmolested. The temple is as grand as anything I’ve ever seen back home… even if its people are four snowflakes short of a flurry. The other Troth are great, as are most of the Scion, but Momma, one of them—Scion Ambrose—is a little too interested in this buxom snowbunny! Nan will sort him out soon enough. We may not be in Nortia anymore, but we brought the frost south.
I’m worried that maybe the Goddess got it wrong and I’m meant to be back home cleaning out the coops and keeping the fishing holes ice-free, instead of here, ensuring Ærta’s prosperity. I suppose, though, if the Goddess chose me to traverse this path, then surely it’s the one I’m bound to be on.
Tell Father I love him and to stop crying. I’ll be fine.
Love you,
Eira Verras Chulainn,
Obligate Born, Lover of Snacks,
Bullies Bane, Misser of Mom

E.A. Fortneaux: Where cotton candy covers contain questionable content—think mayhem and make-outs, all wrapped in lush worldbuilding. She's the mind behind the Obligates of Ærta series, a spicy romance fantasy filled with fate-bound lovers, emotional disasters... and this other guy who is so frustratingly delicious that he’ll keep you up past your bedtime.
She published her debut, Following the Snow, in 2023 as an homage to the strong women who surrounded her growing up—passionate, proud, and a little unhinged. Since then, she’s been weaving realms with threads of passion and unleashing sequels like Snow on the Summit and When Snow Falls, with more releases on the way.
When she’s not writing, Fortneaux is probably caffeinated and covered in dog hair—gardening, researching medieval nonsense, or laughing with her book besties. She writes stories that feel like home—if home had mood lighting, self-love, and lots of kissing.
I’m actually at a loss on how to even begin doing this review without spoiling anything. I would never have guessed this is E.A. Fortneaux’s DEBUT novel. Seriously, it was that freaking phenomenal!!!
The pacing of the book was perfect. It flowed well, was very cohesive and it was easy to read. Don’t let that statement fool you. Despite it being easy to read, it was packed with EVERYTHING. There is world building, character and relationship development, evolution even, if you will. There was lore and politics, a strong FMC and not one but two amazing MMC with vast personality differences. There are support characters that are just as much a part of the story and you fall in love with them too!!!! The mystery, the drama, the action and oooooh the spice!!!! I could not get enough of this book and found myself actually not wanting to finish it because I didn’t want it to be over. The cliffhanger that we are left with had me personally messaging the author. I cannot wait for the next installment of this series. It has been days since I finished this book and I am still thinking about it and still talking about it.
Easily one of my favorite reads of this year and you can bet I’ll be looking to get a signed copy for my collection.
I received and advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily. (Yes, I’ve already begged the author to include me on the ARC team for the sequel!)
I am 100 obessed with this book and these characters. The story unfolds slowly in the beginning, but once it hits, it just keeps on giving. The unique storyline unfolding and the characters' development is just the absolute best. I love the quirkness and jesting as well as the chemistry and fire and spice. Fanstatic storyline and characters, and I can not wait to read the next one.
This book was SO GOOD. It is pretty dense and difficult to get into, but after about 40 pages I was hooked. There are moments when I felt confused as to how we got from point A to point B and would have to reread paragraphs or pages, but I feel like the humor and engaging content of the book outweighed those issues for me. Though humorous, it’s definitely not a lighthearted book. Be sure to check content warnings as there are some pretty intense scenes that can trigger many.
I’ve definitely found a new character to add to my Book Character Hall of Fame!!!
Book starts off a little slow but man by the end the characters had me rolling they were so funny. I’m so happy I took a chance on this when meeting the author. Well worth a read.
This took me a while to read cause I’ve been busy but once I got to the last 30% I became obsessed! The characters are SO funny and everything came together perfectly. It is shocking that this is this author’s debut novel!
The story is exceptional. It’s not another copy and paste fantasy book. There are a ton of politics, so if you like that, this is the book for you!
The last page of this book has me dying to start the next one!
If you love slow burns and love triangles, you have to check out Following the Snow. I gave this book a 4/5 stars because...
Positives: - Relatable, strong FMC - Unique plot line - Body positivity & LGBTQIA+ messaging - Love interests are babes—think hot viking vibes
Shortcomings: - E.A. Fortneaux's writing style is very descriptive, which can be overwhelming; the beginning of this book was hard to get into since it was very detail packed - This book is told in first person but the non-dialogue feels very different from the dialogue—I wish they would've been more closely aligned (I really enjoyed the dialogue) - I felt that some scenes could have been removed or shortened to help move the story along faster - The ending felt a bit rushed, but I'm happy it ended on a cliffhanger
I was lucky enough to receive this book in a PR package from E.A. Fortneaux and read it on KU to support the author, and I'm SO glad I did. I will be reading the second book once it comes out.
This is a fantastic romance fantasy! The author pays close attention to detail adding a richness to the scenes and characters (I want to eat the foods described - especially the desserts!). This book has wonderful world building, it’s clear effort and love went into it.
The characters are well written and posses unique personalities and traits. It feels very realistic without taking away from the fantasy aspect. They talk about things real people talk about!
The body positivity and celebration of diversity was a breath of fresh air. “All bodies are delicious” - yes indeed they are sir ;)
Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romance with an engaging and intricate plot.
Definitely looking forward to the next one (slated for February 2024)
I'm absolutely obsessed with this author-she has such a creative, magnetic vibe that pulls you in from page one, and you can feel it woven in every word she writes. This book was a spicy good time-fun, flirty, and full of personality. I loved her vivid descriptions and the way her thought process flows through the story-it's like you're right there with her.
I did immersive reading with this one, and hearing the author narrate alongside another voice actor made the experience even more fantastic. It added so much depth and personality to the story-it honestly felt like a performance.
If you're looking to vibe out and have an amazing time with a book, this is IT. Highly recommend!
I was Lucky enough to get an ARC for this book and let me tell you what a wild ride. This has probably been one of the more throughly written books I’ve read this year. So detailed in every aspect and I enjoyed the world building and character development. Loved going through Era’s journey and just LOVED everything about Tommand. The ending will definitely make me have to read the second!
Oh My Goddess!!!! <3 Firstly thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this story. I was instantly transported to a whole new world and I didn't want to leave!! This book to me centers around more than Eira and her love triangle (lol), but there was so much heart in this story to show just how strong and resilient a woman is and can be. There were a lot of struggles our FMC faced when she began questioning herself and her true calling for her kingdom, when the challenges and "courses" began in Verus she began to question her whole duty as an Obligate.
As the story continues we see there is so much more to Eira and so much more to this world that she's in. We get some sinister elements, magic, love, everything you'd want in a fantasy!! Thank you so much E.A. for bringing me on this journey with you all. Like I said you've brought my love back for fantasy! Thank you! I cannot wait to read the next stories and see what Eira, Cato, and Ambrose embark on next!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the slowburn romance, and the world that E.A. Fortneaux has created! I loved the sassy FMC, body positivity, and LGBTQ+ representation in this book! I really enjoyed the relationships between characters and how those relationships developed more throughout the story. I may or may not be #teamambrose, though 😅
With all of that being said, I do feel like the pacing was a little off in this book. It definitely got better, but the first half was kind of slow, while the latter half was pretty quick, and a lot of things were happening. I also feel like we weren't really given a driving factor to the story until we were well into the book, so at times I was asking myself "okay, but what is this leading up to?". These weren't big issues for me, but I felt they were worth pointing out.
All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves slowburn romances, political intrigue, a crazy (I would dare say culty) school, and great representation!
I’m going to 100% honest this book took me a few chapters to get into during my ARC read. I think it had less to do with the book and more to do with my capacity at the time. If I wasn’t an ARC reader I probably would have waited for a less busy time in my life to enjoy the 700+ pages.
The chapters are long, like 30 minutes to read each chapter. World building and character description are extremely detailed and allow the reader to create great visuals in their mind.
One person view point, but the dialogue gives insight to the feelings and desires of other characters.
As Eira partakes on her journey she learns who to trust, a little about family, and a lot about love. This diverse book embraces who people are and why they should love themselves.
Eira, Ambrose and Cato are deliciously entertaining and my newest obsession! Catch all the banter, spice and intrigue in this slow to start but fast to capture your attention tale! Moving on to book 2 because I’ve got to know where they are headed!
This book…THIS BOOK!!!! E.A. Fortneaux, this book is absolutely delicious! The detailing and describing of this world is breathtaking. Usually it is hard for me to visualize a world that an author writes about. This played out like a movie in my head. I could picture everything how it was described. Not only are the main characters strong, beautiful, hilarious but the side characters are just as well. Eira, Monwyn Scion, the Protector….I want more of all of you and can’t wait for the next book to come out. I laughed. I cried. I gasped.
I beg you all to please please please read this book. You will love it!
It has so many layers of lore straight off the bat it was a bit hard to keep straight and took me longer than expected to finish since each page seemed to have so much intrigue and underlying world building. I’m excited to see how it progresses.
If A Court of Thorns and Roses, Hunger Games and Harry Potter had a baby this is the tale you’d end up with!!!
This absolutely amazing story sucks you in right away and doesn’t let go!! Our tale revolves around Eira a girl who has been chosen to essentially be an ambassador for her kingdom. Before she can change the world she must be trained and that’s where the bulk of our story takes place. You will fall in love with the characters and the bonds that she makes. You will join in her outrage and your heart will go out others right along with her. She’s a strong female character that knows what’s right and is willing to throw down for the greater good.
The machinations of Hunger Games, the setting and school like atmosphere of Harry Potter and the love interests and spice of A Court of Thorns and Roses all come together to create the stunning art that is Following the Snow!
Outstanding!!! If you like books with “chosen ones” who have to go through trials and education to be able to fulfill their duty this is for you. If you love “why choose” spicy romance this is for you. If you enjoy mental health and body positivity representation this is for you!!!
Bonus post audiobook notes: the narrators (one of whom is the author!) brought every character to life so well! I’m happy I did the audio for my reread because now I’m even more invested in what happens
This book is amazing! After 20 years of reading Romance books, I have personally become very picky and will totally stop reading and leave the book if the story just isn’t there. I could not wait to get home from work each day in order to immerse myself in the world that E.A. Fortneaux has created! The adventures she takes us on are rich and lively filled with laughter, forged friendships, conflict, and a few twists and turns that you do not expect. (Seriously, I totally had a moment where I said to myself “Well, that just took a complete left turn”)
E.A has a wonderful way of storytelling. Her descriptions of the people and surroundings help to move the narrative without pages and pages going on and on about each blade of grass. She strongly establishes the world of the Vertus Temple and does not back down from the quality when the story moves beyond those hallowed walls.
I am really enjoying that there are two MMC with one MFC. I was not actually sure that I was going to like this but I do! Adding that third person into the mix allows room for E.A. to give more depth to the characters through their confrontations and kinships. The world is peppered with a great ensemble of well-thought-out characters of all shapes, sizes, classes, and personalities that help drive the storytelling.
We can not forget about the spice, because who does not like a bit of spice!? Again, I love that we are not just following/encountering just two people. There is a whole cabinet of spice throughout the story. Not really into a particular spicy scene that you are reading, just wait, I am sure there is one further into the story that is right up your alley.
I can’t wait to read more… more about the people, more about this whirlwind journey that E.A. is taking us on, more about this world, more about Eira when she was… oh wait, you will have to read for yourself!
I am utterly obsessed! If I could give a million stars I would.
Following the snow is an incredibly well written story filled with so much detail. The world building during the beginning chapters set the scene perfectly for the developing scenes and plot.
The characters simply blew me away. I love each and every one of them. The chemistry between them leaves one quite 🥵 bothered and the feelings that build are just explosive.
This story is has all the things I love: action, drama, angst, secrets and lies, twists and turns, humor and banter - but above all the romance and spice are next to none.
I cannot get enough!!! And I need to know everything…
Highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to continue this series.
“Welp, I touched a penis… and managed to orchestrate the unsuccessful seduction of a man I don’t like… who was literally the closest person to the man I sorta liked… all because I wanted to shove his arrogant smirk down his throat.”
That was literally just the tip! This was my first E. A. Fortneaux book and I hav3 to say I’m obsessed! She created a stunning, detailed, and descriptive world for me to think about without over doing it or cramming it down my throat. I love how strong and resilient our main FMC Eira is yes she has some moments of struggling with self-doubt what woman doesn’t? Then she gave us not 1 but 2 sexy, cunning, devious, delicious men to drool over wait did I mention they are brothers?
Come, take a chance on Following the Snow and see what the sacred troth and scions get up to while learning to fulfill their duties as Obligates of Aerta!
Love this book,I am immediately downloading book 2 right now!
❄️✨Review: Following the Snow by E.A. Fortneaux ✨❄️
This book was pure magic! With Following the Snow, Fortneaux sweeps you into a world filled with witty banter, beautifully crafted settings, and unforgettable friendships. Each character is so vividly portrayed—you can truly see their personalities come alive on the page. And the body positivity? Absolutely refreshing! The plot is great and filled with layers of politics and intrigue that keep you hooked until the end.
❄️I may be “Following the Snow,” but I can’t wait to jump into “Snow on the Summit” next! ❄️
I definitely recommend this book! It is deliciously spicy 🌶️!
I am so angry with myself for not reading this one sooner! This was amazing!!! Slow burn, why choose fantasy. The characters, the storyline, and the whole world that this author created was terrific. I was hooked right from the first chapter. The sassy, sarcastic & witty banter from the FMC was hands down, phenomenal!! The author narrates the FMC in the audiobook, and it's an absolutely perfect fit. And I know it's her character, she wrote her, but I just think it added so much more to this story. The author is always so positive, funny and just has a terrific attitude on social media, and she has written that into her character. Highly, highly recommend!!!!
Eira has been chosen to become an Obligate to devoutly serve her land along with several others from around the domain. She meets the handsome, arrogant men from Monwyn and finds herself in the middle of a conspiratorial plot as well as a bit of a love triangle.
I know the author so I was trying not to go in with any bias, but honestly I loved the book! Fortneaux really knows how to construct a rich fantasy world, interesting characters, and hilariously witty banter. The plot takes unexpected turns which was pleasantly surprising. I don't normally read spicy romantasy novels so I wasn't prepared for with the steaminess, but it was fun to get out of my comfort zone. I also enjoyed the inclusivity of the novel. "And would you not agree with me that all bodies are delicious bodies?"
I truly had such an enjoyable time reading this! I went in expecting a spicy genre romance, but although this book does contain those elements, it crosses genres unabashedly and melds the interpersonal drama (and steamy scenes) you expect from the romance genre with an expansively drawn fantasy world rife with political intrigue, danger, and lore. This is an ambitious story approached with a somewhat light touch at times, as the tone shifts mercurially from downright bawdy japes to ominous secret rites while, somehow, maintaining the thread of integrity that makes the whole thing work. I always wanted to know what was coming next in the plotting (and let me be clear; there is some wild, fantastic plotting here), while at the same time finding scenes of conversations between characters somehow incredibly genuine and realistic. The romance elements worked for me on an interpersonal level. The sex scenes worked incredibly well in the first 2/3 of the book, although as the political and danger stakes ramped up towards the end they seemed increasingly unnecessary, probably just because there was so much going on.
The plotting spun in a different direction than I was anticipating at that 2/3 point, but it was able to manage the pivot and recapture my interest in this next aspect of the story. I'm hooked again, and definitely looking forward to the next volume so I can find out what on earth happens next.
Following the Snow was absolutely phenomenal! The world building and exquisite descriptions kept me up late two nights in a row. Time sh-mime. I happily lost the sleep.
Delve into Ærta and Experience the Dark, the Light, and all of the Awkward Moments in Between.
My favorite message throughout this book was of body positivity 🙌🏻
The authors words felt like a warm hug! Eira is an fmc I’d love to have as a bestie.
This book has:
✨Fated mates (and this other guy) ✨Witty banter ✨Forced proximity ✨Slow burn to 🔥🔥🔥
Be prepared for a cliffy! But you’re in luck because you can jump into book 2 immediately 👏
I loved this book!! This was truly an adventure to take part in. The author did not play when it came to world building, including a map and very diverse groups of people and incorporating different cultures. I got hunger games and from blood and ash vibes, which is really funny. Hunger games, mainly because of all the pampering and grooming that was going on with the troths, not because of the few fight scenes. Then from blood and ash, because like in that story, there is a chosen one. While this one has multiple, they are held to a higher standard than most, and they are expected to bring great change. But while I say, it reminded me of those, this book it is its very own from start to finish. The author painted vivid pictures. It was very detailed, but still kept a fast pace whereas other stories can really slow down with how detailed they are, this one was the perfect amount. It was a lot, but it still worked. I loved the real world aspects that you don’t see in a lot of books like having to do with women’s bodies. The discussion of periods, waxing hair, or women just being natural and it being culturally excepted within the groups. It played on fears, such as humiliation. And you were sitting right there with the characters feeling embarrassment, fear, anger, even lust. The spice was soo good. I thought this beautifully empowered victims as well. The book was good for the soul. The ending had me screaming. Wondering if we’ve met the person before or if they’re just familiar to her because she has a gut feeling. I am so ready for the next book!
I received this book in a PR package and I’m very grateful for it because it’s a great book. This is a perfect book for fantasy readers and romance readers. It has to aspects of high fantasy, there is complex world building, but there is a lot a ton of spice after a bit of a slow burn. I loved this story and I actually can’t wait for book two- the bomb dropped at the end ugh.
