The Silent Canary

Rate this book
Casting light onto the once hidden tragedy of the 1918 Chilwell, England ammunition factory explosion, The Silent Canary tells of the catastrophic incident that resulted in the largest loss of life from a single accidental explosion during World War I.

But what if the explosion wasn’t an accident?

War pacifist Poppy Pemburton celebrates her twenty-third birthday on the front steps of the Chilwell, England ammunition factory with her favorite anti-war sign and her well-loved marching boots. War tears families apart and Poppy will certainly not allow it anywhere near the only family she has left. But when Poppy's dearest friend, Luca, answers the Great War's call to enlist, Poppy is willing to set aside her morals and join forces with the yellow-skinned Chilwell munition workers, known as canary girls, to bring Luca home safe. Because the only thing worse than the possibility of Luca dying in war, is Luca dying without knowing Poppy loves him.

German spy Jakob Kirtchner is sent to England with one chance left to prove himself. Jakob's infiltrate the Chilwell ammunition factory by any means necessary. New employee Poppy Pemburton proves the perfect means. Germany will win the Great War. If Poppy falls with England, so be it. He just can't fall with her. Or for her.

Exploring the human need to cling to hope, love and family during times of tumultuous upheaval, The Silent Canary, stretches our understanding of what it means to find bravery in the depths of our darkest moments, and forgiveness despite our deepest fears.

Based on a true story and inspired by real people, The Silent Canary, by debut novelist Angela Bricker, is perfect for fans of Kelly Rimmer’s The Things We Cannot Say, and Mark Sullivan’s Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and for all women and men who refuse to allow truth to be silenced.

I was raised in Houston, Texas where I gained a love for country music and Blue Bell ice cream, but at the age of seventeen I moved to Utah to attend BYU and fell in love with the mountains, the snow, and NO humidity, so I never left! I met my husband on my front porch in Provo, Utah, where our employer arranged for him to pick me up for a "new-hire" training meeting in Salt Lake City that I was too nervous to drive to alone.

Many years after that drive, a wedding, and four kiddos later, we still love living in beautiful Utah! When I'm not researching history and writing love stories, I'm going back to my roots singing country car karaoke, taste testing all the french fries in Utah county, or pretending to be an interior decorator.

You can find me kissing my toddlers’ boo-boos by day, tracking my teenagers’ phones by night, and planning epic parties all hours in-between. My energy to write is fueled by overflowing mugs of Dr Pepper, and an admiration for historical women who choose to misbehave.

In this story, you will find:
-WWI novel
-based on a true story
-Multiple POV
-Friendship
-Found Family
-Romance
-Women’s factory football
-Betrayal, secrets, espionage

This was such a great WW1 story! Angela Bricker brings a touching and well-researched story that shines light on a piece of history I haven’t read as much about, a reason I love reading historical fiction so much. She did a wonderful job with her research and attention to detail while incorporating great characters, romance, friendship, and themes of love, bravery, and forgiveness.

I loved that this story was told through three POVS: Poppy, Luca, and Jakob/Charles. You grow invested in each of these characters for different reasons, finding yourself rooting for each one, and watching them have so much growth from beginning to end. The friendships between Poppy and the Canary girls, especially Clara, and the brotherhood between Luca and Sam, were some of my favorite parts of the story.

If you are a fan of historical fiction, learning new pieces of history, and stories that are difficult to put down, I highly recommend this book!✨

Thanks so much to Angela for sending me an ARC and for being a part of your launch team! All thoughts are my own💕

Content to consider: no profanity, kissing, 1 closed-door scene between an unmarried couple (not descriptive or explicit), war-related conditions, poor work conditions, mention of death, explosions, imprisonment, pregnancy outside of marriage

Wow. This debut novel was truly fantastic. The writing was outstanding and several times I would reread a sentence or passage just to let the beautiful words sink in. I highlighted my kindle copy up!

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙇𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙙:
The characters! I loved all 3 POVs plus all the side characters. Each POV kept me engaged and wanting to know more of their story. And it’s not an easy story. They overcame unspeakable horrors, made painful mistakes, and learned to forgive. I hurt for each of them at different times. They each showed incredible strength and resilience during a dangerous time. These characters are flawed and serious consequences come from some of their choices. The character growth from beginning to end was fantastic!

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙙:
Not much! There were decisions made by characters that I didn’t like in the moment because I knew it would complicate their lives. But that’s where the character growth played out so beautifully!

𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨:
I think any historical fiction reader would love this book. I love when I get the urge to google more information while reading, and I definitely did that! I knew nothing about this little nugget of history. This book was well researched, and I loved reading the author’s notes.

Thank you @angelabrickerwrites for the opportunity to be your ARC team and read your beautiful book!

This had me hooked from the first chapter. I loved it so much.

I adore Poppy. She is bright and feisty. She stands up for what she believes in and is not afraid of conflict. She is so loyal to everyone she meets. She goes through so much growth in this story.

Luca is so sweet and loyal. I was so sad for Poppy when he enlisted. I loved reading his point of view while he was away at war. His friendship with Sam is so perfect.

Charles/Jakob is so well written. I loved how complicated his story is. He has so much inner turmoil for supporting his country and his feelings for Poppy. He does good and bad things, but you can't help but love him anyway.

The side characters were all so amazing, too. Mrs. Fischer, Sam, Clara. I loved them all.

This is an amazing historical fiction. You will go through so many emotions while reading it.

This debut novel follows redheaded Poppy Pemburton who finds herself working at the Chilwell, England ammunition factory to support the war effort, as WWI rages in the background. Poppy grew up close friends with Luca, an Italian orphan that has been raised by his cruel aunt who took him in after his parents died. With both Luca and her father away in the war, Poppy devotes herself to the war effort. But little do Poppy and Luca know that their town has been infiltrated by a German spy, who has been given the mission of infiltrating the ammunition factory.

This novel was absolutely heart-wrenching! The novel cycles through Poppy, Luca, and the German Jakob's perspectives. This novel is a true testament to the tenacity of hope and love through the most trying of circumstances and the ravages of war. One aspect I really appreciated about this book is how the characters grow over time. Early in the book, both Poppy and Luca, who are both proud and independent types, are forced to accept help from their much younger friends. While both initially see themselves as their friend's protectors, the roles are reversed. Luca's friend saves his life and Poppy's friend saves her job. There was a pleasing symmetry to this, as both characters find themselves humbled and must accept that friendship extends both ways. This sense of growth in the characters continues throughout. In particular, Luca's expectations and understanding of himself and what is capable of is stretched to the limit by the end of the book.

This book also features a very unusual love triangle and made me consider what it means to love a deeply flawed person. Poppy is manipulated by Jakob, who she is unaware is a spy masquerading as an American. I liked that Bricker chose to have chapters from German spy Jakob's perspective. Although in many ways he is literally the villain, he is a very gray character in that he does have redeeming qualities as well. There are multiple examples of this complexity of characters in this book. In addition to Jakob, Luca's aunt and Poppy's father are also deeply flawed characters who yet are not all bad.

One of my favorite parts about reading historical fiction is learning something new through a fictional lens. Poppy's character introduced me to what it meant to work in an early ammunition factory. I enjoyed learning more about historical ammunition explosions and the way they were covered up in the news at the time to boost morale and keep the location of the factories covered up: "On the occasion that something was printed in the papers, the numbers of deaths and injuries was always minimized and only a general location of the factory was provided" (350). I have read so many historical fiction and actual histories over the years and yet this was my first time learning about the process of making the ammunition. It was wild to read that women working in the factories had to tolerate their skin turning yellow, abdominal pain, and other adverse side effects to do their job!

A huge thank you to author Angela Bricker for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

First off, let me say that I don’t highlight books. I don’t know why, I just never do. With that being said, I highlighted way too much in this book. There were many lines that were beautifully written that I had to highlight them so I can look back and reflect on often. The Silent Canary was everything I hoped it would be! This is how you write a historical fiction! 👏🏻

Seeing the POVs of the main characters; Poppy, Luca and Jakob was incredibly well balanced. The story was rounded out so well among the three of them. They all fought for what they believed in so fiercely and remained true to themselves.

Poppy was a spitfire and I loved her. She was human, made mistakes, acknowledged those mistakes and learned hard lessons. She never lost her passion for her convictions and beliefs. They just evolved into a better understanding of life and love as well as acceptance of herself.

Luca was a sweetheart whose story was so beautifully tragic yet hopeful. The darkness war brings to not only the human body but also the soul was really brought to light through his POV.

Jakob/Charles was a complicated character who truly tried his best despite making questionable decisions. He fought between his loyalty, humanity and sense of duty the entire book while desperate to remain true to himself.

Sam, I would die for Sam. That’s it. That’s all I can say about my sweet baby Sam.

Clara was such a bright light to read about during such dark times and had wisdom well beyond her years. It was majority of her lines that I ended up highlighting.

Do not sit on this book! 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you Angela for the pleasure of being a part of your ARC team!

“Well, Little Canary,” Shaw pauses to wink at Nessy, “love is both soft and loud. It’s saying hello but also saying goodbye. It’s opening your arms but knowing their strength. It’s a forgiving heart but also a noble one that knows its own worth. Because before you can truly love anyone else, you must love yourself.”

I have so many thoughts and feelings about this book. First things first: it is 1,000% worth reading! It will stretch you emotionally in many directions, but it is a story worth experiencing! (Especially after reading the author’s note)

Second, you know an author is AMAZING when they get you to despise a character so completely that you seriously consider putting down the book forever because that character is truly awful! When I reached the point where I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep going, I knew this was no ordinary book.

The story of the Canary Girl, the Soldier, and the Postman is one I will be thinking about for a long time to come. There are so many facets of this story that weave together to tell this incredible tale! How each storyline plays out and intertwines with the others is absolutely fascinating!

I can promise you this: when you start reading it, you will not want to put it down! Even with my moment of rebellion, it took me less than 3 days to finish. (That’s fast for me!)

If you love historical fiction, this is a must read!

I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I gasped, I slammed my book closed and then promptly picked it right back up again and kept reading well into the night. What an incredibly powerful historical fiction novel!! I loved the characters, the main ones as well as the side ones, they were all so well written. The POV from the 3 main characters was so well done and gave so much depth to the story. This was such an interesting time period to read about, and the authors note at the end gives insight into just how well researched and accurate to the time period this book is. Anyone who loves historical fiction must read!

Debut author—say what?! This book had everything I could want in historical fiction: laughter, tears, moments I did not see coming, romance, and even a part of history I’d never known about. The love triangle (done so well btw) ripped my heart out, and that ending…wow. I fell in love with Poppy and the Canary girls, and this heartbreaking yet hope-filled story will stay with me. An absolute must-read and make sure you don’t skip the author’s note at the end!

A powerful, heartfelt historical read! Set against the backdrop of WWI, this novel introduced me to the incredible (and heartbreaking) world of the Canary Girls, something I knew nothing about before reading.

In this story we follow Poppy and Luca, childhood friends turned sweethearts just as Luca is sent off to war. In his absence, Poppy joins the war effort at a munitions factory, becoming a Canary Girl. Enter Charles, new in town, charming… and hiding a dangerous secret. What follows is a story full of love letters, secret identities, impossible choices, and emotional twists I DID NOT see coming.

As much as I enjoy a good love triangle, this one was a bit of a challenge for me, personally. After meeting Luca and then getting to know Charles (Jakob) so deeply, the romantic tension felt more complicated than I anticipated. And truthfully, this love triangle ... TOTALLY WRECKED ME!

That said, the emotional depth and historical insight kept me engaged throughout the story, and I ended up devouring the whole thing in just one day, so needless to say, I still enjoyed this book.

If you love mutual pining, hidden truths, found family, and a dash of espionage and suspense, this one has it all. Closed-door, intimacy implied (once) outside of marriage.

I received a complimentary copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

This book is heartbreakingly beautiful.

For one, this does not read like a debut novel, the writing is so engrossing that I finished it in 2 sittings.

The characters go through so much that my heart breaks for each one of them. I have never loved a love triangle, but this book will make you feel for all 3 of them.

The book deals with themes of friendship, found family, love, betrayal, despair and courage.

“In war, there is no victor. Not one person comes out unscathed. Unchanged.”

And reading this book you will not come out unscathed… it will change you. This had me feeling all the feels. There were moments when I was so stressed that I wanted to put the book down but couldn’t because I had to know how everything was going to play out. I ended up staying up late to finish… it broke my heart and then put it back together again. Seriously it was so good. I love a good historical fiction and this has everything I love… bits of history that has me googling more. It was heartbreaking but full of hope and the romance was everything…

“It's as if he knows this is his last moment to tell me he loves me in a way only one's soul can communicate. I will never be the same after this kiss.” …. “Luca slows our pace, and I know the moment our kiss of discovery, longing, and promises turns into a kiss of goodbye.”

This is a WWI novel based on the true story of The Canary Girls. A nickname for the yellow tint of their skin from handling poisonous chemicals like TNT. It follows a group of women who worked at the Chilwell National Shell Filling Factory. I loved that we get three POVs… Poppy, Luca & Charles/Jakob. Each of their stories play an important role and are woven together to create a beautiful story of friendship, heartbreak, love, forgiveness, hope & courage. If you are looking for a beautiful historical WWI story this is it.

“Perhaps that is the beauty of life.
As humankind we are connected and intricately weaved together with those who love us, those who break us, those who leave us, and those who change us. Each connection creating a unique piece of the tapestry that is our life masterpiece.”

This is closed door but heads up for a lot of tough material… war, imprisonment, torture, death, unwed pregnancy

"In our brokenness, we find our beauty. I know right now all you can see is the dark-the cracks.
But the light is within you, waiting for you to let it shine through your broken spaces and chase away the dark. When you find your light again, it will bring you back to life."

“Fighting people isn't what makes you a hero. It's fighting evil in all its forms that makes you a hero. It's fighting against the demons that hold you back and keep you from believing in who you truly are. It's facing the worst parts of yourself and finding something within you that's still worth fighting for. It's standing back up when all you want to do is surrender. That is what makes you a hero.”

Wow. This debut it phenomenal! I was obsessed with the cover alone but the story it tells within its pages is one of the tragedy of war but moreso the beauty of love, forgiveness, hope and courage.

I personally prefer WWI stories to WWII so I was thrilled that this novel spans 1916-1919. I loved the town of Beeston and and interesting history of the Chilwell National Shell Filling Factory. I was genuinely invested in every character. Angela did an incredible job creating broken, complex and inspiring main characters and multi-dimensional side characters as well. She made me feel every emotion I was supposed to feel especially when they were intense, conflicting and I was quite frankly stressed! 😅🫠

I believe truly great art means different things to different people and experiencing it helps them heal in their own way. That's what this book did for me. I have not been well emotionally. Nothing like the conflicts of war torn Europe. But Angela laces these pages the most stunning truths about life and being at peace with one self. All the things my poor heart needed to hear at this time. And the tears running down my face more than once while reading were healing parts of my heart as I try so desperately to forgive like Luca and be brave like Poppy.

This is a great debut novel. The story is beautiful and different than other wartime books that I have read. The story is to told from the POV of 3 different characters and each of their parts was important and well done. I loved the main characters and there were lots of really amazing side characters as well. There were so many beautiful and emotional moments and I kept thinking how this one would be great on audio.

If you love historical fiction, I think you should read this!

I was given a copy of this book by the author but all thoughts and opinions are my own. I'm proud of Angela for writing such a beautiful story! I'd love to see what she writes next!

As a fan of historical fiction grounded in real events, The Silent Canary was an absolute delight. Set during World War I, this novel sheds light on the courageous women who worked in the top-secret ammunition factory in Chilwill, England—a rarely explored piece of history brought vividly to life.
At the heart of the story is Poppy, a remarkable and resilient heroine whose strength and determination anchor the narrative. Angela Bricker masterfully weaves a tale that celebrates both the enduring power of love and the unbreakable spirit of those who lived through unimaginable times. The Silent Canary is a compelling tribute to the unsung heroes of the Great War. A powerful and inspiring read!

A dear character in this story elaborates on how our brokenness ultimately creates our beauty. Like stained glass windows, the joy and beauty is found because many small pieces combine to create a whole. If it was one solid piece it wouldn’t be as diverse, interesting, and simply breathtaking. And when the light shines through the masterpiece it becomes something truly magical.
That is what this book is to me. It is a work of art magnificently crafted to take your breath away. Each element of this inspiring story is a small piece that adds to it. The characters add a vivid, meaningful, and realistic splash of color. The plot illuminates with action, adventure, heartache, romance, triumphs, struggles, and every human emotion you could possibly feel. The rich, well-researched, and impactful historical background brings together and solidifies this story as a work of art. And the light shining through to make it even more wonderful? The heart, soul, and love put into this book by the amazing Angela Bricker.
Look out world, if Angela’s debut novel is this good then we are in for an absolute treasure trove of stories to come. I CANNOT wait to see what else she will have to delightfully add to the world of historical fiction.
And possibly the best part of this book? Its ability to not only allow the reader to experience decision making through the characters, but allows them to take a closer look at themselves. Life is full of difficult moments and hard decisions, and this story sheds a gentle yet powerful light on human strength and perseverance. It was eye opening to me to see how the characters made the choices they did, living with those choices, and how to truly survive your darkest moments.
Gripping, stunning, heartrending and heartening, and a look into the depths of human emotion, this story has it all. A classic in the making, this book has pages full of valuable life lessons amidst the backdrop of the reality of WWI. Fans of historical fiction will not want to miss out on this engaging, informative, and inspiring novel.

Content Warning:
No profanity, war violence and prisoner of war related cruelty, kisses only with one fade to black scene that is not explicit/descriptive (between unmarried characters), explosions, mental health, and difficult working conditions.

Thank you so much to Angela Bricker for an early copy! All thoughts are my own and a positive review was not required/asked for but happily and willingly given.

✨ The Silent Canary ✨

@angelabrickerwrites truly stunned me with this beautiful novel based on true historical events of women working in ammunitions factories in England during WW1.

The story was beautifully done- and shows the efforts women made to contribute to the war effort, local prejudices, father daughter relationships, female friendships, and espionage.

The ending gutted me, even though I knew right at the beginning what was going to happen. It is a story about love and how that love often leads to sacrifices.

✍️ Add this historical fiction to your list my friends!

The Silent Canary will break your heart, stitch it back together, then leave it humming with the kind of hope only the best historical fiction can give.

Premise: 1916, England. Poppy Pemburton becomes a munitions factory worker to protect her best friend, Luca, who’s enlisted in the war. Meanwhile, German spy Jakob Kirtchner is sent to infiltrate the factory, using Poppy as his way in. Their lives collide in a riveting, character-driven story full of tension, danger, romance, and impossible choices. Set during WWI, but this isn’t a too heavy war/battlefield story, it’s a story about people. About love, loyalty, identity, and finding light in the darkest moments. A perfect mix of all of it.

The novel is gripping from the start, with beautiful and impactful writing that carries it all the way through. The characters feel so real you’ll find yourself thinking about them and worrying about them even when you’re not reading. Makes this book unputdownable because you need to see how they’re doing and make sure they’re okay. And when the book is done you’ll miss them. Their words and choices will stick with you.

Poppy is my hero, I love her growth, her strength, her fire. Luca is a sweet delicious cinnamon roll with the kind of heart and quiet determination that inspires you. Jakob/Charles is complicated and funny and heartbreakingly rootable. And the side characters are everythinggg, I love them so much too.

You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, your heart will race and shatter and heal as you move through these pages. This is an absolute must read for historical fiction lovers. I also love that it’s set during WWI, I don’t know that I’ve ever even read from that time period before? It makes this story even more unique and compelling. I had never heard of the “canary girls” who worked in bomb factories during the war, wow! Getting to learn about their history and real life stories through the voice of this novel feels powerful and important.

Overall, this is an engaging, emotional, and unforgettable read. I loved the multiple POV’s and how the storylines wove together. It’s a stunningly beautiful debut, and I cannot wait to see what this author writes next.

BOOK REVIEW: THE SILENT CANARY // ANGELA BRICKER

MY THOUGHTS: This was a very well-done, rollercoaster of a book! I was constantly on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Poppy, Luca, & Charles were great narrators; I felt all their pain, and loss, love, and determination. From the trenches in France, to working in an ammunition factory, to trying to serve their country they desperately want to get back to, this book really captured what the war felt like. So many unknowns, and yet they all, mostly, persevered. Excellent book!

CONTENT: Light. War, sex implied, kisses, death of loved one, death, injury

WHAT I LIKED: Watching each character grow was so well done. I really saw the character development unfold as I read. Everything was paced so well.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE: I wish I hadn't guessed at one of the elements at the end, but also after reading the Authors Note I knew why it was added in!

GENRE: WWI Historical Fiction

PAGES: 366

RATING: 4.5☆

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS?: Absolutely! Must-read WWI historical fiction.

I love reading debut novels there was something about this book I knew I needed. Y’all…The Silent Canary absolutely blew me away. The raw emotion and beauty of this book rendered me speechless.

I loved how it was set in WWI and centered around the canary girls. It was fascinating learning so much about the conditions these girls worked in. They truly were heroes that I admire so much.

These characters made this book.

Poppy amazed me with her strength and courage. She hated war, but put her personal feelings aside to help the man she loved and her fellow men. She endured so much throughout this book, but she was steadfast and strong.

Luca…was there ever a MMC I loved more?! His love for Poppy was beautiful and powerful. His endurance and how he dealt with the hardships that came his way had me in awe of his resilience and determination.

Jakob was a complicated character that had my emotions changing constantly. My heart went out to him, while at the same time I wanted to smack him.

This book is heartbreaking and healing at the same time. These characters endure so much and go through countless trials. They make mistakes, endure pain and suffering, and find forgiveness and healing.

I had to know how everything would turn out and couldn’t put it down. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so invested in a story like this.

And I can’t forget Sam and Clara… the side characters that stole my heart and never let go.

Anyone who loves historical fiction needs to read this story. It will change your life and make you want to be a better person.

What to love:
❤️Fry’s chocolate bars
❤️Heartbreaking moments
❤️Multiple POV
❤️The rooftop scenes
❤️The letters
❤️Friendships

THE SILENT CANARY
by: Angela Bricker
by: @angelabrickerwrites

•I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~1916: Based on the true story of the Chilwell ammunition factory explosion and inspired by real people.

🔥-The Silent Canary, is a heartbreakingly beautiful story with ALL the feels and depth. It shows what it means to find great bravery in the depths of such dark moments, and forgiveness despite deep fears. This heartfelt historical read will demand and grip your heart and emotions! Uniquely told by 3 points of view of dear Poppy, Luca, and Jakob, who are all beautifully flawed, and complex characters, who in their own remarkable ways, will show such incredible strength and resilience during such dangerous times. It’s their spunk, loyalty, vulnerableness, bravery, and endearing ways had me completely invested. I thoroughly loved seeing such inspiring character growth from each one of them. Also, the beautiful writing within is flawless, vivid, and has precise attention to detail. This story flows wonderfully weaving in themes of hope, love, trust, choices, friendship, kindness, betrayal, cruelty, consequences, courage, determination, sacrifice, forgiveness, and sweet redemption. While this dear story doesn’t shy away from the hard, hope and light shines through, showing the importance and value of choosing love above all things! It is love, that has the power to change and transform everything within! This story my friends is worth the beautiful read!💯📚😭❤️😍

“Love has the power to hurt, to destroy, to break you so small you fear you will never be whole again. But it also has the power to heal. To create something within you more beautiful than you have ever known. Love mends the
broken, brings peace to your and soul, creates
unmeasurable joy. The key is to keep searching until you have found the love that does exactly that.”

•Content: war-related conditions, poor work conditions, mention of death, explosions, imprisonment, kisses, intimacy implied (once) outside of marriage.( no details explicit or otherwise).

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Oh my heart! This book encompasses what I love about history fiction. Learning about an event in history that I was not aware of, a story that pulls at my heartstrings, and amazing character growth.

It is set around events surrounding the Chilwell ammunition factory during WWI. It roatates between three different POVs. There were many incredible quotes that I found myself highlighting, which is not normal for me.

I highly recommend this book for fans of Ruta Sepetys and Heather B. Moore, but more romance centered like Lovely War by Julie Berry.

Not a bad story - kept me engaged. The only problem I had was with the editing...or lack thereof. That can be a problem with self-published books, and while I was interested in the story, I kept getting distracted by the fact that the author and/or editor didn't seem to know the difference between "conscious" and "conscience," or "aisle" and "isle."

I'm probably just being the nitpicky grammarian that I typically am, but it was distracting.

As I am writing this review, tears are streaming down my face from this truly remarkable story ♥️

I am astonished that this story, The Silent Canary, is a debut novel. It is masterfully written and packed with history, pain, grief, war, heartbreak, love, self discovery, faith in oneself, trust, compassion, forgiveness, and perseverance. The amount of work researching, perfecting, and making this story a work of art is evident in the way Angela’s words flowed through the pages.

I wish I could share all my favorite moments/quotes of this story because it has impacted my heart in a way a book has not done in a long time.

This story is hands down a must read, ten star, stop what your doing, and read it book ♥️

“In our brokenness, we find our beauty. I know right now all you can see is the dark—the cracks. But the light is within you, waiting for you to let it shine through your broken spaces and chase away the dark. When you find your light again, it will bring you back to life.”

Okay let me wipes my tears and try to compose myself.

This story is told from the POV of Poppy, Luca, and Jakob (AKA Charles) and takes us through 1916-1919 WWI.

I was instantly pulled into this book and my mind and heart have been taught so much of the history of the ammunition factories, the real life “canary” girls, and the true story inspiration of the character name Clara. Once you’ve read this story, don’t miss out on the Author notes included! It will definitely pull at your heart and provides and in-depth history of the factories among other things in the story.

I am grateful to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.

Inspired By A True Event

If you love historical fiction, this story will become a favorite. If you love @rachel_scott_mcdaniel and her writing, you will love @angelabrickerwrites and her writing. The research and care put in to each page is evident and startlingly beautiful.

Poppy Pemburton is vocally against war, and when her father enlists and shortly after her childhood friend, Luca, she decides to do what she can to end the war as quick as possible.

So much happens in such a short amount of time and lines are blurred, crossed, and struggled to get back from. Pain and loss is prominent. Love and support is missing for a time and grief has a way of skewing what our choices normally would be.

Luca Whelan has loved Poppy since his youth, but has always carried guilt and wants to be the man that is good enough for Poppy, someone she could love and when he enlists he doesn’t know how the course of his life will change.

Jakob Kitchener, a German Spy. A man sold on the cause, yet starts to feel a prickle of doubt. He is one of the reasons the lines are blurred and he has to decide what it would take to gain hope.

You will find:

💛Dual POV
💛Black Leather Boots
💛Letters
💛Canary Girls
💛Sam
💛POW
💛Kisses
💛Forgiveness
💛Healing

✨Ond of my Favorite Quotes:
“Oh, Firebird, what have you done?”
“I’m quite certain I have just left you something to remember me by.”
He laughs. “Indeed, you have. As long as I live, I shall never forget that kiss.”

This story will have you questioning how you would respond in many of the situations presented. It will have you feel the pain of the losses, the guilt in a war riddled world, and the small determined steps to heal and forgive.

Thank you so much Angela for this beautiful story!

“In war, there is no victor. Not one person comes out unscathed. Unchanged.”

Reading The Silent Canary by Angela Bricker will change you. I needed a few days just to process everything I felt. This debut novel delivers the kind of writing you’d expect from a seasoned author—rich, immersive, and absolutely unforgettable.

Set against the backdrop of the real-life Chilwell munitions factory explosion of 1918, this book is heartbreakingly informative, beautifully written, and emotionally complex. I fell in love with the side characters just as much as the central trio. Told through three powerful points of view, this story explores love, sacrifice, espionage, and resilience in a time when hope was a rare commodity.

It’s the kind of novel that lingers in your thoughts long after you’ve closed the final page.

This gripping, and impossible to forget novel is available now!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content/Trigger: war violence and war-time situations, abusive family, drunkenness, abandonment, death of loved ones, romance- one short, non-descriptive sentence eluding to a fade to black between an unmarried couple, descriptive kisses. (Feel free to DM if you have any questions)

I LOVE a historical fiction book & this one was beautiful! You can tell how much thought, time and emotional depth was put into this book by Angela. She brought such beauty to a side of WWI I’ve never heard before, the canary girls. There were 3 POV’s and I loved all of them. There was so much character development and growth throughout the story it was beautiful!

Some favs:
Clara😭perfect baby angel girl who was by far one of the best parts of this book
Sam😭Love him he’s perfect, I would love a book from his POV and more in depth on his life!

This book was heartwarming and heart breaking all at the same time. I loved in the authors note that she put more details into the people from real life who inspired the story and more in depth information on the actual factories etc. Reading that added extra meaning and impact to the story. It was a beautiful tribute to these people. Highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates historical depth and stories that will stay with you!!

I am so impressed that this is Angela Bricker's debut novel - it is one of those stories that'll stay with you forever and the writing is fantastic!

World War 1 is a time period that I don't read a lot about, so I was intrigued going into this story. I learned a lot while reading it and I think I need to add more WWI stories to my TBR list now (so if you know of any good ones let me know 😉).

This book had a great cast of characters - characters you can't help but love, some you can't help but hate, and some that simply deserve a facer. The main characters had some great character growth throughout the story as well, which I appreciated. I loved the lessons of hope, forgiveness, and love that they learned.

While there was a lot to love in this book, I wish I would've connected to the main characters more than I did. I spent the first fourth of the book annoyed at them and the rest of the book tolerating them. The side characters definitely stole the show for me. Sam and Clara were the best!!

The ending also dragged a little for me. I think the last few chapters could've been condensed down into a short and sweet epilogue and it wouldn't have detracted from the story at all.

Many thanks to the author for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.
