Book two of the Starhawk trilogy

Allied together now as partners in crime and lovers, Niko and Elliott have the ire of an entire galaxy pointed their way. As complications pile up against them and old friends become enemies, continuing the fight against the corrupt and powerful elites of Honeybliss is only getting harder.

Niko’s former mentor, the revolutionary and bounty hunter, Lady Death, can grant them the chance to finally expose the harrowing truth of Honeybliss and save countless lives—but Elliott isn’t convinced that they can trust her.

Especially not when three years ago, Niko vanished while owing her a precious debt.

Niko is forced to confront the past he’s been running from, which means going deep into the heart of a black market empire ruled only by credits, with the biggest bounty the galaxy has ever seen on his and Elliott’s heads.

They say love is the most powerful force in the galaxy... but they forgot about money.

Exceptional. Safe for me. Terrific sequel. Does not stand alone. I think there will be a third book—correction, I KNOW there will be, LOL, it is the Starhawk TRILOGY—while the romance reaches a wonderful new place, with some heartbreaking revelations and hard-earned character growth, the baddies—and oh, they are Evil—are not all yet vanquished.

Terrific action, risky life-altering choices, perhaps a bit less Something than book 1 but I still thoroughly enjoyed this action thriller romance.

HFN but absolute #endgame HEA feels.

My thanks to Booksprout for the ARC.

Niko and Elliott return to rain vengeance upon Honeybliss (a powerful, untouchable sex trafficking ring). I was so wrapped up in this high-velocity story, I full-on gasped when I turned the page and saw the acknowledgements.

Wait. What? NO!

The ending, a soft cliffhanger (no one is in danger, but they're about to embark on a terrifying mission), came out of nowhere. I wanted more, damn it.

Niko narrates the majority of the story, but Elliott finally gets a voice too. Yesss!

The men's relationship is bound up in trauma. They love each other fiercely, but all is not smooth sailing. The angst is carefully handled, so it never feels gratuitous or melodramatic.

Prepare for a daring rescue and a heartbreaking revelation.

Niko's once good friend, Lady Death, is all kinds of awesome. I liked the Legend too, even if he did hunt Niko in the previous book.

Tropes: sci-fi, galaxies far far away, epic adventure, grand romance, honor, family/friendship, hurt/comfort, good vs. evil, a sprinkle of D/s.

I can't wait for the final installment of the Starhawk trilogy!

I was lucky enough to get an arc of this book and when I say I was lucky, I was TRULY lucky because this one was absolutely a treat!

This book is seriously a scifi romance/space opera at its finest! What Lothy manages to do in some 300-odd pages is a feat of absolute excellence. There is not a single beat out of place, not a single plot-line that was left out or ignored or not hinted at in the first book. For me, and I am not usually one to read anything romance centric, this one really hooked and never let go.

The second book is darker than the first I will say, but those heavy topics are handled it with such elegance and grace. The deeper themes and emotions that are laced through the narrative really build off of what was established in Kestrel. It’s not just a romance yall! It’s much, much more than that. Just as I thought I had an idea of what might be happening, I was pleasantly surprised to find my theories slashed, keeping me on my toes the entire time. What more, I didn’t feel as though anything was subject to overused tropes either. Niko and Elliott felt REAL throughout the entire plot. The choices that were taken made SENSE.

I could rant and rave all day. I think I might have liked this one even a little better than the first.

Please, please, fans of both sci fi and romance, pick this series up and cherish it, because it’s got something for everyone!

I was very impressed by the first part of the Starhawk trilogy: the tension between the characters, the original plot, and the delightful writing style. The second installment built on that nicely. Niko’s family plays a larger role, interesting new characters are introduced, and we get to see more of the impact Honeybliss has had on both Niko and Elliott. The two grow closer and learn to cope with each other’s traumas.

This book places a strong emphasis on intimacy, and for me personally, that overshadowed the rest of the story a bit. I found the submissive and dominant nature of their relationship—a new development—a bit uncomfortable, especially given the sensitive nature of their mission to take down various rapists. Remarks about “using” each other or being “used” by the other, when one of them has literally been abused, just struck me as strange, even when they were both consenting and respectful towards each other.

The author did take great care in exploring this topic—bringing Niko’s shame to the surface and letting him overcome that obstacle—but for me, it felt like too much, especially considering all the other heavy themes in the story. In the end, it added extra drama that I felt wasn’t necessary, and this kind of fixed “power dynamic” came a bit out of nowhere for me and didn’t quite fit the nature of their relationship—even though the author did offer explanations for it. It’s the kind of dynamic that some readers will appreciate more than others—I found it didn’t really appeal to me.

Because of that, I ultimately found this book less compelling than the previous one, though that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a great story and I’m definitely curious to see how the final part will unfold.

Finished this on my cruise and just got back to having cell service. Loved all the vulnerable moments in this installment of the Starhawk Trilogy. Yes there was actions and crazy things happening like in the first book, but there were so many more intimate moments speckled in. And I'm not just talking about physically intimate. Both Nico and Elliot do a lot of sharing their burdens as they've come to trust each other. They both have their own baggage, but when you have someone to help you carry the weight, it doesn't seem as insurmountable as before.

"𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚗𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝚊 𝚏𝚊𝚒𝚛 𝚏𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝. 𝙸 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚊𝚕𝚠𝚊𝚢𝚜 𝚐𝚘𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚝𝚘 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚎."

I absolutely loved meeting Lady Death and all the wild stuff that came with her presence. I was worried since knew going in that Lady Death wasn't very happy with Nico since their last parting. She seemed pretty powerful in her own right so if she wanted to make Nico disappear, I think she easily could have.

You know how book 2 in a trilogy is sometimes just a filler read? Well, that is not the case with this one. MAJOR things go down that have affected the trajectory of this entire plotline. I'm still uncertain about Nico's brother. I'm even more uncertain how these two men are going to pull off the rest of their mission after the events of book 2. What I am not uncertain about, is that these two knuckleheads love each other dearly and are 100% meant to be.

The most amazing love story of Niko and Elliott continues! Oh man, was this book a chonky one. And I loved every single chapter. 🤩

Every story beat and scene just fell right into place, a perfect continuation of what was set up in book 1 and then expanded upon. We learn more about both Niko and Elliott's families, the plot moving forward, and a deeper world is discovered as you move on. It always kept me hooked, at at times terrified of something absolutely awful happening to any of the characters. 😅😅 The exploration of Niko and Elliott's relationship even further was handled extremely well, too! I loved seeing them open up with each other. So dang sweet.

I don't want to spoil though, so I'll keep it at that! This book was a wonderful wild ride, and I am so very excited to read the finale of the trilogy when that releases! 💕💕

I’ve had the great pleasure of receiving an ARC copy of Killjoy in exchange of a free review.

I had to physically force myself to read this book as slowly as possible in order to savour it to the very last page. Adrienne Lothy has a gift with words and every page is curated to the detail, and I hung by every word.

Killjoy picks up immediately after Kestrel and follows our favourite space duo as they proceed in their purging mission. Just when you thought you knew everything about Honeybliss, there’s more to the horror that justifies and elevates our boys even more. And as the reader begins to really listen, we also get to experience the immense relief when the galaxy finally listens.

Together, Niko and Elliot are on a parallel journey to becoming their true selves. I was amazed at all the little topics that Adrienne had cleverly placed in Kestrel only to pick it up again and deepen in Killjoy. Niko and Elliot are two units who elevate each other, they listen and observe and love each facet, even the ugly ones. Even when they struggle with who they themselves are, the other is ready to lift, encourage and celebrate. Killjoy is a breath of fresh air in terms of representation and celebration that’s just what queer media needs right now.

I am mad at the media that made me wary and constantly on the lookout for the next thing that goes wrong; Killjoy took me on a journey that is anything but easy, it has shown me hurt and hope and everything in between. I lived in Niko’s and Elliot’s galaxy for the past week and the only question I have left is: is there space for one more family member on your planet? And/or if not, is Lady D taking new wives? Asking for a friend.

An out-of-this world journey; Adrienne Lothy does it again.

This five star read picks up right where we left our troublemaking sweethearts at the end of Kestrel and takes us on yet another exhilarating journey of heart-pumping action, sweet and spicy romance, heartfelt conversations and found family.

Even in its darkest moments, Killjoy softens its blows with the emotional depth and genuine affection between the two male leads. This Achillean romance delivers on everything it's set out to be. Absolutely dripping with delicious spice but equally deep and heartfelt moments, it doesn't shy away from difficult and important topics and conversations, neither does it stray from the overarching mission of the Starhawk trilogy.

An absolute page turner; the Starhawk series is a must-read for lovers of sci-fi romance, eat-the-rich political pieces, queer literature in general and gorgeous lush writing that builds vivid visual worlds for the reader.

Killjoy is the second installment in what is shaping up to be one of my favourite series of all time, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

**I received a free digital Advance Reader Copy of this book. I am leaving this review freely and all opinions are my own.**

Be gay, do space crime - part 2! Killjoy is the heart-wrenching, action packed sequel to Kestrel (so if you haven’t read Kestrel yet, start there!).

Elliott Kestrel and Niko Estrella teamed up in book one to fight the underground trafficking and abuse ring known as Honeybliss. This book follows directly on from that, as the bounties on their heads get ever higher and the risk to carrying out their mission gets more fraught.

This book was packed with cinematic-like action scenes (very Star Wars; think Andor and the Mandalorian), betrayals, rescues, new friends and old reuniting. It also delved deeper into Elliott and Niko’s blossoming relationship; the mistakes they make together, the fights and the apologies. I loved that even in the depths of a fiercely fought war being waged upon them, they still had time to try and be together like a normal couple.

We also got more insight into Niko’s state of mind and his fears, both internal and external. Both of the guys do a lot of (much needed) soul searching and although it made my heart break for them, they end up in such a better place for it!

If you’re a fan of sci-fi and action thrillers (or if you just wanted gay Andor: me) then I highly recommend picking this series up!

Read Killjoy for:
✨ Book 2 in a trilogy (read Kestrel first!)
✨ Be gay, do space crime
✨ Two intergalactic felons on the run
✨ Fighting against the government
✨ Found family, new & old friends
✨ Cinematic battle action scenes
✨ Physical disability rep
✨ Negotiating dom/sub dynamics
✨ Righting the galaxy’s wrongs

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book! It’s available on 24th June 2025 🚀

I want to be Lady Death when I grow up.

Book two in the Starhawk trilogy served and left no crumbs, though it did leave me hungry for more.

We delve deep into depression, guilt, loneliness, shame, internal struggles, and self discovery. Nico and Elliot have not had it easy, and their troubles seem never ending. But they still move forward, all while dealing with what it means to be human. They’re both so complex, and each layer that gets peeled back reveals more complexity. Nico with his disability and Elliot with trying to get justice in a galaxy that doesn’t want him to, all the while dealing with his grief at what he’s lost. I love the way the story really dives deep into these issues and handles them with care.

Every action scene was so well done, and they all had me holding my breath on the edge of my seat. There were times where I honestly didn’t know how everything would turn out. Kept me completely engaged.

Adrienne Lothy’s world building is insane. There’s so much thought put into it. I got lost in the richness of all these different worlds, cultures, and species. It felt like I was there. That alone made this a great read. Coupled with these amazing characters with wonderful depth and layers, the engaging plot, and the wonderful bond between Elliot and Nico, this was a phenomenal read. Well beyond phenomenal, and I’m so excited for the next book.

I received an advance copy and this is my voluntary review.

"This was never a fair fight," Elliott said, deadly serious. "I was always going to make you mine."

Is Elliott talking about Niko here, or me as the reader? Because WOW.

Another amazing instalment in the Starhawk trilogy, with even more emotionally charged scenes than the first. These enemies-to-lovers are firmly past the enemies stage now, which is always a shame, but their blossoming relationship is such a pleasure to witness that I don't even care. Still incredibly fragile between themselves, and yet it's a relationship that is unflinchingly secure when it's them against the rest of the galaxy.

We learn more about side characters. Visit more breathtakingly-described planets. Explore sexually charged scenes that hold emotional and mental depth to them (and meet my absolute favourite dynamic of a strong, fierce MC who submits between the sheets). Give the bad guys their comeuppance...and yet there's still so much more to go in this story, and I LOVE IT because I never want it to end.

These books are going to hold a special place in my heart for a long time, and I'm recommending them left, right, and centre.

Go. Read. Now.

"You have a lot of homicidal friends, don't you?" Elliott, the galaxy's most wanted assassin, whispered.

When I read Kestrel a while back, I was amazed by the sci-fi universe that had been created. In this book, the author builds on that further and gives a deeper insight into the bigger picture. And, of course, the characters are developed further.

I was on the edge of my seat throughout nearly the entire book. After betrayal in Kestrel, I didn't trust any of the new and old side characters, only Elliott and Niko. I did love their expanding circle of friends and family who helped them with Elliott's mission. We get more insight into why Elliott is the way he is. I can say I hadn't seen it coming, and it made me feel all the more for him, all the while breaking my heart for him 😭

Another reason why I love this series is the disability rep. My own is very different from Niko's, but there were moments when his fears and doubts were all too familiar. I love how Elliott was there to help him overcome some of these and was there for him, even if Niko had a habit of running or pushing Elliott away.

If you're looking for a series with plenty of action, characters who make mistakes (sometimes rushing headfirst into them *cough* Niko *cough*) but learn from them, fun side characters, and plenty of heart. Then check this out! I can't wait for the last installment 🥰

💬 My Thoughts:

📖👉 I really enjoyed this second book!
🌑 It felt darker and more intense… but still an easy read and very well written, as expected.
🌍 From the world-building to the cultural details and differences, everything is described with such precision and creativity.
🎬 The cinematic battle scenes and the alien landscapes they move through... abandoned outposts and all, are just perfect. 👌

🤺 When they train together? Ugh, I love it.
🗡️ Elliott (self-taught!) somehow manages to beat Niko with his lightning-fast moves, and their shared obsession with knives is pure chef’s kiss. 🔪💥🤌

🛠️ I also love when Niko uses his gadgets, and Elliott keeps coming up with new tech to keep them safe.
😑 And as much as Niko tries with his heavy high-tech suit, stealth is just not his thing... 🫣
😏 Elliott, though? Stealth is basically his trademark. 🤭

🔥 The spice? Still amazing.
💥 Tension, chemistry, tenderness... it’s all there and even more satisfying now that their connection runs deeper.
💔 Niko struggles with both the desire and the idea of bottoming, of being sexually vulnerable. It’s been there since the first book, and when they finally talk about it, the way Elliott takes care of him is just so gentle and sweet. 🥹

❤️‍🩹 Both Niko and Elliott are still dealing with old and new wounds, but their bond is so strong now.
💞 They lean on each other, support each other, and it feels truly earned.

👥 I also loved seeing more characters interact and how their little found family is starting to grow.

😭 In short: I cried.
😊 I smiled.
💘 I absolutely adore these two idiots in love.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎

Niko:
■ Niko watched him and neither of them spoke. Elliott was so worshipful with his movements, careful with Niko like he were clay in the hands of an artist to be sculpted. It was almost too much to look at, too much to bear.
...
“Elliott—”
“Please, Niko. I want to help you. Just let me.”
Why was it so hard? Why was it so difficult to let Elliott help him? Let him massage his abused, exhausted legs and damaged nerves? To let him simply take care of him for a while?
Why was it so hard to accept help?
Niko swallowed, pushing it all away, the urge to fight, to pull away, to snap that he was fine.
...
“I might not trust anyone here,” he said. “But I trust you. And if you think we’ll be alright, then we will be.”
“Come here,” Niko said. Elliott hesitated, then climbed up onto the bed, lying against Niko’s side. Niko turned over to face him and wrapped his arms around him.
...
The screaming in his legs had quieted to a burning whisper. “I’ve got you, Elliott.”
“I know you do,” Elliott said, and he sounded like he meant it. Despite everything, Niko couldn’t help the smile that pulled at his lips.

Elliott:
🥹 🫠 ■ "You… are such a beautiful, extraordinary person. You are. You take my breath away. I love being around you. With you. I love talking to you. I love being your boyfriend, your lover. And I love sex with you. I love the way you look at me when you let me inside you. I love you. You’re compassionate. You’re funny. You’re a great cook. You’re the whole package. You’re my dream, Niko. You don’t need armor and tech to be that way. Just you, as you are. You’re so beautiful. And I just wish you could see what I see."

Niko:
😍 ■ “I know. I know. But we’ll figure something out. Don’t we always? With your intellect, and my good looks…”
Elliott laughed, a sound that had become so precious to Niko.

👍I'm definitely going to read this again

💯 I’m SO ready for Book Three, Starhawk... but I’m definitely not ready to say goodbye to these sweet boys!

😉 Thanks for reading hope this helps you out!

Absolutely loved it. What a rollercoaster ride!
This has all the ingredients that make a fantastic story.

.) Two MCs that are equally likeable and deeply complex.
Book 2 is rich of personal growth, self-discovery, moral complexities and hurdles to jump for both, Niko and Elliott. I loved every second of their journey.
Both struggle from guilt, insecurities and feeling inadequate for different reasons, and it’s all so well explored!

.) A romance that grows with the characters. Neither has much experience ‘being with someone else’, and of course things happen that need sorted. But they talk it through and try their best, and it’s simply heartwarming and swoony.

.) Interesting how things develop in the bedroom, too. There were signs of it going that way in book 1, so I wasn’t massively surprised. However, I did not anticipate the issues that might come with it. Again, the author resolves the ‘problem’ beautifully, and my heart ached for both men as they discover what works for them under the sheets.
It’s an eye-opener on many levels for Nico, in particular.

.) The nail-biting plot.
Hunted by virtually the whole galaxy, there’s a lot of pressure on Niko and Elliott. When insane sums of bounty are in play, trusting another person doesn’t come easy, to put it mildly. So much tension and angst! And all those twists along the way, with the last one near the end making me gasp out loud.

.) Brilliant world building. rich in imagination and detail.

.) And finally Fabulous secondary characters.
I really love the little family that starts growing around Niko and Elliott (and darn, am I glad how things turned out with Zann!) and yes, I'm a total fan-girl for Lady Death!

All in all, absolutely brilliant!

And just to mention it, getting two (or was it three?) chapters from Elliott’s POV was unexpected, but quite a welcome) surprise.

Two minor things though that always rub me up a little wrong.
.) Why would anyone promise: “I’ll not let anything happen to you”? There are NO guarantees at all of that, particularly when a whole galaxy and some of the richest, most influential people are out to get you. Nice romantic thought, but effectively a very empty, pointless promise.

.) And then … maybe a few too many ILYs in the last third of the book. (for me!)

None of which dampened my 100% enjoyment of this book.
It’ll be tough waiting for the last one.

I received an advance copy and this is my honest review.
4.25*
A second enjoyable book about Niko and Elliott—assassins of the corrupt galactic elite. I found this read to be darker than the first because it’s so personal and heart wrenching. The angst ramps up in book 2, also, with a lotttttt of hurt/comfort. Both MCs have substantial character arcs, dealing with trauma, shame, and anger. As in the first book, the action sequences are exciting and there are some improvements to the sci-fi content, while still being vague. We get more discussion of tech limitations, the ship, travel, cloaking, etc., which I appreciate.

The author takes a sharp turn in this book with occasional Elliott POV sections. I always like delving into what characters think, but I have to be honest, the shift threw me out of the book. I read along for pages before it dawned on me that the POV had changed and I had to go back in confusion. I really needed a signifier when shifting to Elliott’s few POV moments, especially in a book that is so overwhelmingly single POV from Niko.

I am awed by how well the book digs into Niko’s bottom/sub shame, toxic masculinity, and acceptance of disability. This storyline weaves through the whole book and is deeply felt, thoughtful, and tough. The resolution is satisfying and continues to the end. We also experience another intense mental health moment, this time with Elliott, dealing with crushing guilt and shame from his own trauma.

On that note, for a book as focused on mental health and healing as this one, the plot is still hugely driven by Elliott’s revenge and anger. As Niko explains, achieving revenge doesn’t bring peace; you’re just left with a chasm in your chest and no more anger for fuel. With Elliott on his revenge campaign, how can he possibly heal? How can we be hopeful for their future together? It leaves me feeling bleak and repeating the phrase “an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.”

Like the first book ending, this one leaves us at a good moment, right before a mission. I’m definitely still invested in what happens next and how Elliott reorients his world away from revenge. 🤞

A big thank you to Adrienne Lothy for the eARC, even if I am a bit late to finish it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐.75

"Why was it so hard to accept help?

Killjoy starts directly where Kestrel ended, making the start of this book a fast-paced adventure that doesn't take its foot off the pedal. While this was again a very fun read like the first book, the darker themes are carried over and are explored in more detail that make this book heart wrenching at times. I felt for both of these characters, but I felt so much extra sorrow for Elliott. Like, I just want to give him a big hug. I also heavily identify with Elliott so perhaps that's why 😅

We learn more about the intergalactic conspiracy and politics as Niko and Elliott desperately try to get the information out to the general public. And along the way, it takes some twists and turns that I feel so silly for not even considering when reading Kestrel! 😅 I won't say too much because of spoilers, but I enjoyed a lot of the character dynamics in this sequel and I wasn't ready for the 🌶️. Sailboat—if you know, you know 😉

Like I said in my Kestrel post, the plot still feels proportionate to the setting that is easily accessible even to those who aren't usually a fan of the sci-fi genre. It still feels very well sustained in its sequel—and the series as a whole—that leaves me feeling like the concluding book will have non-stop action from the get go.

If you've ever been daunted by sci-fi or want to start reading the genre for the first time—and of course if you're also a fan of queer stories—this one is a no brainer. And in the process, you're supporting an indie author! 🎉

ARC review. Kestrel is already out. Killjoy is coming out 24th of June. This review covers both.

Gay space cowboys. Star wars meets Robin Hood, meets Dexter. Eat the rich vibes! SCI-FI enemies to lovers.
With physical disability representation.

It seems fitting that after finishing these books, I caught myself staring into space. I needed to process. Tension is written so well. Although hope always remained, my stomach hurt whilst reading.
Not only the tension, also the world building and storytelling was superb! I was dropped into a whole new world, without being overwhelmed. The writing is beautiful and emotive.

I have to say, I struggled with the first book Kestrel. That has to do with dubious consent between the main characters. I know many readers will love the tension between enemies, but that is often why it doesn't work well for me. And that is my only caveat. I'm glad I kept on reading, because I've fallen in love with these boys. They are complex and layered characters. The love between them, precious.

If you loved Kestrel, you are going to go crazy with Killjoy. It is so good! The story unfolds and twists and it kept me on the edge of my seat.
The consent in Killjoy is delicious. And one of my favourite plotlines is them discovering and navigating their intimate dynamics. Not only hot, but straight into my feels.

There are several side characters that I adore. How could I not with Lady Death?!

I am looking very forward to the last book of this trilogy.

What would you do for love? Forsake everything you believe in and follow the world’s most notorious assassin to the edge of the galaxy? Because you know Kestrel - Elliott- isn’t the unhinged maniac the media has portrayed him - but ridding the world of unredeemable predators who hide behind their wealth and performative philanthropy. And helping him makes you feel more alive than you have in years…
Hard to believe, but Killjoy, Book 2 in the Starhawk trilogy is even better than Book 1. And I enjoyed Kestrel. A LOT.
Niko and Elliott are amazing characters. Their path isn’t t easy. Niko is impulsive, defensive, and isn’t great at expressing himself. Elliott is still driven by the need to avenge his sister’s and countless other victims’ treatment at the hands of evil cabal of bored billionaires Honeybliss.
There’s a twist that caught me off guard but made total sense.
The world-building, action, romance, and nail biting suspense are top tier. Even Niko’s testosterone laden brother Zann, who is initially a thorn in the new couple’s side, becomes a trusted ally.
I needed this book. Truly. Good triumphing over evil. Complicit agencies being held accountable. A shared humanity between people who can put aside their differences for the common good.
Elliott and Niko grow as a couple, taking on whatever the universe throws and them - which is a lot!
There’s a huge showdown coming in Book 3 which I am looking forward to.
Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was blown away with this. I thought I knew what to expect, chaos, banter, and assassins in space—and yes, I got that in spades—but what floored me was the emotional resonance. There’s something incredibly tender woven through every sharp edge, every wild mission, every whispered moment between Niko and Elliott.

Their dynamic isn’t just romantic—it’s transformative. They see each other clearly, even in the mess. Especially in the mess. I loved how both characters grow without ever losing their original personalities. It’s rare to see emotional vulnerability treated with this much care in a story packed with action, laughter and spice, but this book balances it all so well.

Now, I don't read much sci-fi but I'm so impressed with the worldbuilding here, it's rich and brutal and strangely beautiful, but it’s the character work that really makes this book a knockout. I laughed, I was on edge, I highlighted so many funny one liners and still found myself crying more than once. Killjoy doesn’t pull any punches, it offers a space for the characters to be seen, messy, flawed and full of love, and still wanted in such a raw and honest way.

I didn’t want to leave this galaxy. And I already cannot wait for book three, even though I'm a little scared because Niko and Elliott are such sweet silly baby boys and need to be protected.

Killjoy picks up right after the end of Kestrel, drawing the reader back into the world of Niko and Elliott. While their relationship grows, they also go through more than one struggle - intense emotions and discussions about disability, self-loating and the fear of abandonment are a big part of the second Starhawk book.

While both Elliott and Niko open up more to each other, including some very exquisite spicy scenes, there are still secrets and unspoken trauma between them. Trauma they have to work through, which was done in an incredibly wonderful and sensitive way. We learn more about Elliott's past, including some harrowing revelations that hit hard, while Niko continues to grow into himself.

There were times I wanted to shake both Niko and his brother Zann (must be a family thing) - an irritation that was well portrayed and grating. Both reclaimed as well as chosen family are a big part of Killjoy, for Niko as well as Elliott - emotional topics for both of them, ones they can confide in each other.

I'm very much looking forward to the last book of the trilogy, and see where their journey takes us.

I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy but I'm freely leaving this review. All opinions are my own.

Starhawk vows to be heard

So this is the follow up to Kestrel and if you haven't read that go do that now or be very confused.

Niko and Elliot are amazing together. However, they both suffer with a lot of emotional baggage they have not dealt with. In this book we see a lot of the whys behind their actions both with what they are doing and how they act in their relationship.

Niko is so afraid of what he isn't able to do that he thinks it makes him less. He is always afraid of being a burden and hates what he can no longer do.

Elliot started his mission because no one would listen to the truth. He is fighting for all the lives taken too soon. He is especially fighting for his sister. Finding out the full story of what happened to her is abs lutely heartbreaking and also makes so much sense. Elliot never saw anything after his mission but Niko makes him want more.

I absolutely love the push and pull between Niko's brother and Elliot. They are so alike but have such different views points that it is crazy.

Lady Death is the most amazing character. She is unapologetically herself and she is a bad(donkey) beach. (I hate censoring but oh well). I absolutely love her interactions with Niko and her willingness to help.

I'm excited to see what's next in this series.

This was so good!! The first book in the trilogy sucked me in and it only got better with book 2. This one was a little less action-filled, but instead focused more on the relationships between characters--romantic, familial, mentor-mentee, friendship, and with one's self. Elliott meets Zann, we find out more about Cleo, Niko's history with Lady Death, and so much more. This isn't to say that the plot didn't develop--it did in a big way--but now that the ground work has been laid, we get to see more of the characters and it sucks you right into their world.

I think Niko and Elliot are climbing the ranks to be my favorite book couple of all time! Their relationship is so real with the highs and lows and it makes me love them even more. They are the perfect balance for each other and they actually communicate!! Small spoiler, but get the tissues ready for chapters 19 and 20 BECAUSE TEARS. They discuss things, they trust each other, they have spice off the charts! 100% recommend this book and trilogy!

I've been putting off this review because honestly I just didn't know where to begin with these books. This series is such a refreshing and exciting change of pace and I absolutely love these books.

Book 2 did not let us down, it packs just as much if not more of a punch than book 1 and completely stands on its own in terms of plot and characters. I was really excited to see some new faces being introduced (I would devour any and everything written about lady death and her wives) as well as Niko's family get more page time.

Between all the on the run dramatics, Niko and Elliot also have quite a big emotional journey in this one. Watching them work through their issues and emotions together deepened the romance and made it so clear how solidly loyal and in love the two are.

I'm so happy these books exist. I love space adventures and action and these are some of the best. With desperate romance and back alley deals, characters who refuse to be beaten but also take time to be vulnerable. The complete package.

*thanks so much to the author for an ARC!!

I have so much love for these boys ❤️

Killjoy was such a great continuation of Niko and Elliott's story. In this book, the boys are still set on carrying on their mission and delivering to the Honeybliss monsters their long-deserved comeuppance.

In parallel, we get to watch them settle into their romantic relationship and explore their evolving dynamic while juggling the baggage that wants to get in the way of their happiness.

This second installment was filled with tension, suspense, and twists. Between their targets going into hiding and their growing bounty, Niko and Elliott have to face more risks than ever and are forced to take a gamble in reaching out to potential allies.

It was stressful and high in action but I liked that we saw people from Niko's old life coming to his aid and committing to help the two of them finish what they started.

I can't wait to see them put an end to this Honeybliss business and get their true HEA. I'm looking forward to the next book!

Whenever I get to read Adrienne Lothy's work, I know it's going to be amazing. Kestrel had set up wonderful promises and oh, my god, did Killjoy deliver!

The underlying theme of this series —abuse of power by a wealthy elite— is close to my heart. Killjoy not only explores it, it goes further in empowering the victims of such abuse to fight back in any way they can.

I'm always here for Eat the Rich vibes and this series is manages to turn them into an action-packed sequel full of self-exploration, gentle love, and scorching spice. It's absolutely masterful.

Lothy's prose is still top-notch and incredibly cinematic. While Kestrel had a single POV (a great fit for the story), Lothy teases the reader with a few chapters from Elliott's POV, showcasing her range as a writer and deepening the story. The only way I could be happier with this book is if I could read it again for the first time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Even better than the first book of the Trilogy… High on suspense, I wanted to shout out loud sometimes what to do or not to do and almost did not want to turn the page… Just when I thought this was more Space Thriller than Romance there began a real deep dive into past trauma and a thorough negotiation of the relationship. The different characters and their individual strenghts were accentuated in detail and in a very believable way. What started out in a hunter-criminal scenario and ended with a we two against the universe situation in the first book finds its logical consequence in building a group of allies and getting the message of the criminal network out into the universe. Got to a logical end shortly before another hig suspense situation. Very much looking forward to the third book.

There are some books that, when you read them, hit so hard you instantly wish you could go back and read it again for the first time. Adrienne’s Killjoy is one of those books.
This is book two in the Starhawk trilogy, an eat-the-rich, enemies-to-lovers, sci-fi romance - and a series you NEED to read.
The writing is wonderful, truly, and there are whole passages that I have highlighted just because they’re so powerful and descriptive. The plot is well-thought through and engaging, just when you think you have it figured out, you don’t. I especially enjoyed the relatable friction between somewhat estranged family members and a new love interest. Who really does have whose best interests at heart?
I don’t want to spoil anything, I just want to urge you to read it.
Well played, Adrienne. Well played.

I rarely leave reviews. It's a horrible trait of mine, but I'll own it. And when I rate something, I'm at the point where if I remember to rate it, it's going to be between 4-5 stars. I'm not wasting time on negative ratings or reviews. Anyway, I'm trying to be better for my indie authors. I'm a mood reader and go by feels, and this book gave me the feels. I had some anxiety here and there, worried the story would follow the same formula a lot of books in a series tends to do (break ups, couples being forced to separate, major cliffhanger that leaves you stressed out). I'm happy to report that I love the way this was written. There were sweet and sincere moments that almost had me crying in front of the family. I'm looking forward to the final book while also sad to know Elliot and Niko's story will be coming to an end.
