The Kiwi Hobby Farmer and the American influencer he can’t stop watching.

Perfect for fans of Annika Martin and Tessa Bailey.

When New York fashion influencer Lyssa Luxe goes viral for all the wrong reasons, the last person she expects to offer an escape is her best friend’s brother from New Zealand.

But needs must, so Lyssa hops on a plane with plans to pivot to smalltown content to repair her damaged rep. And if she can leverage her ruggedly handsome Kiwi host to disprove haters’ claims she has the allure of a wet noodle, that's even better.

Hobby farmer and beefcake Mike Holliday's mouth has always got him in trouble.

He didn’t think Lyssa would actually leave New York, and now she's stepped out from behind his screen, it’s a full time job keeping her at arm’s length. Mike needs to show his town he’s a mature and responsible entrepreneur, and that means keeping both his mouth and his notoriously revolving bedroom door shut tight.

But when Lyssa asks Mike for help (ahem) ‘finding herself’, his Kiwi hospitality and Lyssa-specific lust will be put to the test. It'll be okay, right? As long as no one—especially not his sister or his small town neighbours—find out.

This is a full-length, fish-out-of-water, HIGH SPICE romcom. For full cws and notes, visit the author's site.

4 stars.

I really enjoyed "Wide-Eyed" by Esme Brett! It's heartfelt, hilarious, a bit zany, spicy as heck, and super funny. I will admit, some of the lines made me cringe (using "unalive" in a book, noooooooooo, let's not do this in print, too!), but most of it made me laugh and beam. I liked Lyssa and Mike's story, a best friend's brother romance. Lyssa is a self-proclaimed chaos goblin of a fashion social media influencer who has grown up in privilege but is a bit aimless at times. When she needs a breather after a social media blow-up gone wrong (this is a gross underexaggeration of what happens, but I don't want to spoil anything!), she takes an offhand comment that her best friend Caroline's brother Mike said to her and travels to New Zealand for a visit/reset. Mike is, as he says, "pure of heart and dumb of ass." He is a himbo with a reputation for sleeping his way through his town (and beyond). But, he is trying to be a "big business boy" now, having changed out his partying days for dreams of owning his own business with his mini horse, Mini Mike (MM who, by the way, is the standout character in the book!). I love how Mike tried to reaffirm, over and over, how he didn't really have true feelings for Lyssa, while obviously being obsessed with her enough to watch all of her social media videos and knowing everything about her. Lyssa is a bit of a mess (understatement!). She has to recover from the fallout of losing her job while also trying to figure out what she really wants to do with her platform...and life. Though they are total opposites, Mike and Lyssa strangely work together. Though they start out as a purely physical thing as Lyssa tries to learn how to "do things right" (if you catch my drift), their feelings grow into way, way more... despite Caroline's warning. I feel like I learned a lot about New Zealand, its customs, culture, mores, and norms. I have always wanted to visit New Zealand, but now, I want to go even more. Esme Brett's descriptions really bring the country to life in my mind. I laughed quite a bit while reading this one. I loved its depictions of ADHD, its message about loss, grief, and moving on, and its commentary on toxic parents versus loving, wonderful ones. I admit, I *do* need to check out the first book in this series, but I am going to get on it ASAP after enjoying this book so much. Check this one out!

Thank you to Esme Brett for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

An engaging and all encompassing read with SUPERB chemistry between two perfectly imperfect characters!

This book follows Lyssa, a NYC influencer fleeing scandal by arriving at her best friend's brother's front door, in New Zealand. Mike wasn't serious about his invitation to host the struggling chaos demon (lovingly) but at the look of her, he can't turn her away. Together they find acceptance, intimacy, and the ability to chase new dreams. They're also just really, really hot together. Like damn.

What I loved about this book:
Characters were so interesting, Mike being the reformed playboy and Lyssa being a chaos demon (non derogatory). Flawed but real, and on their own very important and distinct journeys that
Loved seeing Lyssa embrace different facets of her personality in a new environment, she really came into her own which was a pleasure to watch.
I loved the small town setting and the characters! The family/found family vibes were strong.
The chemistry between the main characters was exceptional and explosive!

Loved this book. Lighthearted, bouncy feel good story with a lot of heart. I might be biased due to the ADHD rep in this one because it really resonated with me.

We join the Holliday family in New Zealand again to visit Mike and Lyssa (Caroline Holliday's brother and best friend whom we meet in Eye Candy). Lyssa is spiralling and needs to get away from NYC, Mike has become the town himbo and is trying to turn over a new leaf.

This is a sweet, spicy, and medium paced romance. The characters have flaws but that isn't the main focus, the plot is simple and effective, and the background characters are relationships are brief but loveable. I would love to read more of these characters and Aotearoa in general.

4.5 star so round up!

NZ Indie Author!

THIS BOOK WAS HOT! The previous book eye candy was horny for sure but this one was H O T T O G O - Mike can take me hot to go 🤣

Esme has such an incredible way of writing NZ character, settings etc without making it cringe but while still being super kiwi. She always has great messages in her book that relate to the real world and character that are perfectly imperfect and just rock being themselves.

Highly recommend if you want a spicy rom com!

I loved it. AHHHHHHHHGHG
I had SO MUCH FUN reading this book, Mike is such a himbo and so sweet and Lyssa gives me Alexis Rose vibes, which I love. Also, I felt VERY identified with Lyssa 🤔🤔🤔
And even tho is a romcom, it has emotional moments too that had me crying on my commute.
At this point I'll resd anything Esme writes. Can't wait to read Tessa's book.

Ohhh and the cover, Lyssas hair and eyebrows are perfect 💖

This book completely swept me off my feet. Set in Woodville, New Zealand, it combines all the best parts of a small-town romance with fresh, modern characters that you can’t help but relate to.

Mike? Hot. Like ridiculously, unfairly hot. And significant. He’s my brand-new book boyfriend.

Lyssa? Amazing, funny, easy to connect with. I adored being in her head. She’s my bestie now.

And the animals? Don’t even get me started on the animals. They were so cute I wanted to pet them through my Kindle screen.

This had me blushing, giggling and sobbing. The chemistry was sizzling, the banter was fantastic and the romance was intoxicating.

I finished it with a huge smile on my face and a desperate need for more. It’s smart, sexy and utterly satisfying on so many levels.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves romances that make their heart ache in the best way. Please, do yourself a favor and grab this book, or any of Esme’s books. She’s officially my queen from now on. And she’ll be yours too!

Incredibly grateful for this ARC of Wide-Eyed by @esmebrettbooks

A 5 star read, a hot AF rom-com with emotional depth & relatable characters.

Mike Holliday - the most loveable, sexy, dumbass beefcake I ever did read about. Mike can half drown me in the bath any day (read the book)

Lyssa Luxe - the most chaotic, neurospicy, fashion savvy queen who stole my heart. Lyssa made me laugh, cry & wanna punch someone.

Small town NZ farmer, Big city American influencer - they shouldn't work together but they do - two messy sunshines with a magnetic pull on each other, a bucket load of sexual tension & an instant understanding of each other's needs.

Esme has done it again with a perfect balance of humor, hotness & heartfelt connections.

The spice always lands with Esme's books but Mike and Lyssa are next level, the combination of Mike talking her through it, toys as team mates, the built tension and Lyssa learning what she needs was top tier!

I love how Mike fell first and hard despite his past and how he made Lyssa feel confident, cherished, and beautiful in all her messiness. I adored how Lyssa stood up for Mike and immediately saw him for more than just his reputation and what others said.

Esme always creates characters that are flawed but real. Wide-Eyed is no different, It makes it easy to connect with the characters and makes the emotional moments more impactful. This one got me more emotional than the others in the series, but in the best way, I was in my feels for both MCs and shipped them so hard.

The ADHD rep was done beautifully.
I really related to Lyssa's chaotic brain and overthinking, and I really felt for Mike - his desire to make something of himself and show people there was more to him. The ending was emotionally charged, but the way our MCs came back together solidified that they are meant to be.

Esme always manages to make her books 'kiwi' in such fun and comforting ways, and I love reading them and feeling 'at home'. The kiwi humor had me cackling. The strong found family vibes and loveable side characters add to the story and make it even more special. Sign me up to room with Cilla and drink with Tessa any day.

Dont miss this one ♡

After influencer Lyssa gets fired from her dream fashion job in NY, her best friend’s brother invites her to visit in New Zealand. I enjoyed the small town New Zealand setting and all the info dump we got from Lyssa courtesy of her AHDH.

The Holliday family and their neighbors were the star of the show. If you read Eye-Candy you know Caroline and Mike is her brother. Mike is a himbo in the truest sense of the word, considering at the beginning he refers to himself as “100 percent pure beef baby”. At the beginning of the book he decided to improve himself in order to get funding for the petting zoo he wants to open (adorable).

Sone quote from this “pure of heart and dumb of ass” MMC:

“I didn’t have time to bounce princesses on my dick these days - I was going to be a Serious Business Boy™️. NEW MIKE.”

I liked how both his and Lyssa’s pov sounded like them - sometimes characters that are supposed to be himboes speak with the eloquence of the author.

“My asshole clenched at the idea of her being out here where I couldn’t keep an eye on her.”

Lyssa was very lovable. Her brain works in mysterious ways and sometimes- like the cheerleading scene that I had to skip because I was getting second hand embarrassment- it should have felt corny or embarrassing but it didn’t because of Mike and the other Woodsville people who accept her.

For the critical part, I have to say there were so many things and themes happening that I think this book was trying to do too many things at once, I wish it was more streamlined. What I liked tho is that this book is like Lyssa and Mike’s characters, lovable, quirky and with a kooky sense of humor.

Spoiler: If Lyssa was in an accident instead of Mike he would have expired on the spot.

Wide-Eyed is out September 25. I received an ARC and these are my honest thoughts.

I love how Esme Brett writes romance books - they are bright and so full of joy while handling difficult topics with grace.

We start out the book with Mike, who’s lowkey obsessed with his sister’s best friend Lyssa, noticing that she’s not her normal, bright self and impulsively invites her out to visit him in New Zealand. Lyssa, who is desperate to get out of New York and away from a viral livestream scandal, jumps at the offer to go around the world and reset her image. Never expecting her to take him up on his offer, he’s shocked when she shows up at his work. Hijinks ensue as Mike is trying to turn over a new leaf in town to start his business after a lifetime of being viewed as a lothario.

Lyssa was earnest and relatable throughout the book. She’s pretty aware of her ADHD and how it affects her ability to do certain things or perform certain tasks, but she’s determined to become a better person and friend. While her ADHD is different from mine, I’ve definitely experienced her type of ADHD with close friends and family members.

I really enjoyed the cozy feel of the book. I love a romance book where individual growth accompanies growth as a couple or unit and this book was a great example of that. It felt like Lyssa and Mike were encouraging and supportive of each other.

Tropes: forced proximity, best friend's brother, reformed bad boy

Lyssa, an influencer and fashion design hopeful, does a live stream that turns the world against her. With her former room-mate and best friend gone, she is trying to handle it alone. Lucky for her, her best friend's brother Mike offers her an escape to New Zealand. She takes him up on his offer, without telling him, and shows up at his feet (literally) with no plan. Mike didn't think she'd accept his offer and has no idea what to do with her; he was totally fine with watching all of her posts, videos, and existing in his phone. Up close and personal changes a lot of preconceived notions about each other.

Esme is a brilliant writer with the easy flow between hysterical and light to heartfelt and deep. She blesses the reader with her extensive New Zealand knowledge and seamlessly incorporates it so you don't feel confused the whole time with the different lingo & meanings. While I don't understand the whole "you can't date my brother or else" thing, it does create some delicious tension between Lyssa and Mike. I did not read the previous book in the series about Caroline, the best friend and Mike's sister; this book makes me want to go back and read it.

I read the book in one day and really enjoyed reading it. LOVED IT. I will definitely recommend this one to friends who love a contemporary romance.

Also a mini horse as a side character? Yes. Lil Sebastian is in good company.

Read it if you want a new, good hunky book boyfriend 💖

I absolutely adored Eye Candy and all the quirky characters, so when I saw that the sequel was about Caroline's over-the-top roommate I raced to sign up to advance read.

Lyssa Luxe spent her whole life overcompensating because she was never cerebral enough to please her academic mother. After her fashion influencer dreams go up in smoke she flees New York to her best friend Caroline's hometown in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

When her accomodations fall through she finds herself staying with Caroline's brother Mike. Mike is a total himbo, literally "pure of heart and dumb of ass" and is trying to reform his playboy reputation so he can turn his hobby farm into a family friendly business.

Mike has had a bit of a thing for Lyssa for years (and has been a faithful, if secret, fan of her videos) and their forced proximity is really taxing his "new-and-improved-Mike" persona.

Wide-Eyed is so adorable and spicy. Lyssa and Mike both have significant growth as people over the course of the story. I really appreciated the ADHD rep and could totally relate to Lyssa's description of her brain never, ever shutting off. And Mike is such a sweet, burly cinnamon roll. 🩷 Together they are the perfect pair of shoes. (IYKYK)

Lyssa Luxe needs to get away, recover, and lie low for a while. When her best friend's brother, Mike Holliday, offers her an escape, she jumps at the chance.
Mike has earned himself a reputation as a playboy, but wants to be taken seriously as a businessman. The problem is that distancing himself from Lyssa is more and more difficult each day for the husky hero. When Lyssa asks him to aid her in 'finding herself', Mike is definitely in over his head in the best way.

I love a best friend's brother romance! The pining is always so good. The forced proximity and reformed hero make this a chef's kiss of tropes.

I've read a couple of Esme Brett's novellas and this is the first full-length novel I've ready by the author. The glimpse into NZ culture was so fun and the ADHD rep was so well written. I also loved all the animals and their personalities on Mike's farm. They are always such a bonus in romance reads.

I must admit that this was my first book by Esme Brett, but it won’t be my last! I found her characters realistically imperfect and intriguing. Mike and Lyssa flaws weave in and out of the story but they are not held up for examination but are inevitabilities that are acknowledged and respected. They are not cookie cutter main characters in any way. She has also layered such genuineness to Lyssa and Mike’s family and friends that you can practically hear their conversation in your head as you read.
I did not realize that a small town in New Zealand was the setting, so I was pleasantly surprised. It is also a spicy rom com with a solid love story. Lyssa and Mike grow individually and as a couple with normal misunderstandings and missteps along the way.
Esme Brett is now on my authors to read list and Book 1 of the Holliday Family series is waiting for me!
I received an advanced reader copy and am leaving a voluntary review based solely on my reading experience.

Lyssa is an influencerwho lives in NYC.When she goes viral for all the wrong reasons, she wants to get away. When Mike Holliday, her best friend Caroline's brother invites her to come to New Zealand, she hops on a plane.

Mike Holliday is trying to change his playboy image. He is not expecting Lyssa to barge into his life.Their meet cute is hilarious, and when they end up sharing his house,it is difficult to keep Lyssa at arms length.

Lyssa wants Mike, but he keeps pushing her away. They are off limits to each other, but they cannot ignore the spark between them.

There are a few challenges along the way to their happily ever after, but they eventually get to their happy ending.

There are lots of laugh out loud moments,as well as emotional ones.Loved every single moment of Lyssa and Mike's romance.

They were perfect for each other.

Cannot wait for the next book in the series.

When a New York fashion influencer goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Lyssa Luxe flees the spotlight and escapes to New Zealand, crashing with her best friend’s brother. Her plan? Rebrand with wholesome small-town content and maybe prove she’s more than the internet’s latest joke. Mike Holliday, a charming hobby farmer with a reputation for trouble, never expected Lyssa to step out from his screen and into his life. Determined to look responsible in his tight-knit town, he tries to keep his distance—but sparks, temptation, and a little “finding herself” threaten to blow his good intentions wide open.

I ended up rating this one a 4, even though it took me way longer to get through than I expected. I really wanted to love it from the start, but I struggled to fully connect with the characters at first. Both main characters clearly wanted more from life and from each other, yet spent a lot of the book circling those desires without actually doing much about them, which made the pacing feel a bit frustrating. That said, the final chapters finally delivered the growth and change that had been building in the background, and it did come together in a satisfying way. The setting felt fresh and different, the opposites-attract dynamic genuinely worked, and overall I still enjoyed the story enough to recommend it, especially if you’re in the mood for something a little off the usual rom-com path 🌍📚✨

ARC Review: Wide Eyed, by Esme Brett
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When NYC influencer/fashion darling Lyssa seemingly steps in it and needs a breath of fresh air, she decides to take her BFF’s brother up on his offer to see life at a different pace, away from the chaos…in New Zealand. Mike has some reputation overhaul to do of his own, attempting to convince the town his immature himbo days are in the past and he is reliable enough to invest in as a business. What neither of them plan on is the undeniable chemistry and comfort and comedy gold they find in each other’s company.

Wide Eyed follows the events of Heart Eyes (novella prequel) and Eye Candy (book 1) in the Holliday Family series, but can be read as a stand alone. However, details from previous books will be apparent/spoilers if read out of order.

I love Lyssa and Mike. Oh my stars yes. Lyssa is bit of a frazzled mess, but she’s out there doing the damn thing, while Mike is the husky himbo of my dreams. Esme Brett writes her characters with a really nice nuance; they aren’t without their flaws or poor decision making moments, but they are in relatable moments. Moments that I would probably make the same mistakes.

I love that both mains have their own goals and they exist outside of each other. And they get in each other’s way sometimes! Hello! Yes! That’s what new relationships/situationships are like! Messy and oft not thought out! It feels genuine that way.

And finally, guys…the spice in this book…so damn good. If you’ve read Brett’s other work (you should), you will be totally satisfied 😉 with the representation of intimacy and bodies and consent and *sigh* all the good things.

Folks, Esme Brett isn’t an autobuy author for me for no reason, and this story once again solidifies my love for her cheeky and wonderful story telling.

Wide Eyed releases on September 25, 2025, so preorder it today!!! Format: ebook provided by Esme Brett. Thank you for giving me the chance to read and review in advance!

A cute, lighthearted story with characters that get in their own heads a lot, which I find totally relatable. I loved the New Zealand references, including the native language and cultural sensitivities. The farm animals are such a fun addition. There is some open door spice, mental health representation, and two characters that are really trying to grow.

This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. That said, I enjoyed the previous book Eye Candy where the two main characters from this one are introduced. It also adds to the Holliday family dynamics.

Thank you to the author, Esme Brett, for providing this book for review consideration.

This book has the perfect amount of kiwi-ness and kiwi stereotypes! Lyssa gets played and used and tossed away from her "secret" boyfriend who also happens to be her mentor. Mike invites her to come visit to get away. MIke just happens to be Lyssa's best friend's brother. He's absolutely swoon worthy as he falls fast and tries to dote on her.

Highly recommend to anyone who especially loves stories with all the kiwi-ness, the fish out of water trope and the he falls first trope.

The Author hinted at the end of the book that there is one more Holliday at least that needs to get their story told!!! I cannot wait to read it!!

Esme Brett is NZs own Ali Hazelwood. This fun, lighthearted but heartfelt story had me laughing, cringing, relating, asking “WHY” and tearing up a little.
First, the characters. Mike and Lyssa are some of the most visceral characters I’ve ever read in a Romcom. Their big personalities shone through so much that I had to fancast. Mike is a classic kiwi bloke who’s super cocky, but ultimately a big softie. Lyssa was a tornado of a character, that made sure she was always noticed. Esme made a classic trope- best friends brother- so new and interesting in how she chose to bring these two together and I didn’t want to put it down.
The plot was absolutely driven by these characters. They made some out-the-gate decisions, but it worked for the characters and didn’t feel forced or stale. The humour and banter were incredible. This book was everything I wanted it to be and more.
And I’ll say it again- Ali Hazelwood vibes. If you love Ali, you’ll love Esme.

This was my first ever ARC, and it was a wonderful first ARC to get. This is the second book, and is a connected standalone that takes place after Eye Candy. I hadn't read Eye Candy prior to reading this and you don't need to read it first.

Wide-Eyed follows Lyssa who is in the midst of a career crisis after a livestream of her confronting her ex-boss and fling goes viral, and Mike who is attempting to repair his local reputation so he can follow his dream of running an educational petting zoo. Mike is described in the book as "pure of heart; dumb of ass" but honestly that applies to Mike and Lyssa in the best way. Mike has an outsized sense of justice and a strong connection to those he's close to, but the man is not what anyone would describe as a genius. Lyssa is just so effortlessly charming. She's so much, but in a way that I couldn't help but find endearing. I really liked the ADHD rep from Lyssa and her struggles with her sexuality was so real and authentic.

This was overall a really easy read to get through. The humor was great, all of the main cast was really likable. As soon as I finished I bought the first book in the series and I can't wait to read it. I'll definitely be following Esme's future books if they're as cozy as this was!
