Carina

As heir to my coven, becoming a High Priestess isn’t without sacrifice. When the neighbouring wolf pack demands I go with them in exchange for a year of peace, it’s a sacrifice I willingly make. The pack and their issue aren’t anything like I believed them to be—nor is the pack’s Alpha. Both will test what it takes to survive, and what the price of my soul will be when I do.

Ryder

As Alpha, it’s up to me to ensure my pack’s safety. A run-in with an enemy coven endangers my father’s life, but delivering the neighbouring coven’s princess to them will spare his life. Exchanging the prickly but brave witch should be simple—until I meet her. Now, giving her up means losing a part of myself, but keeping her means losing her trust.

Dark Mist is a fated mates paranormal romance between a witch and a wolf shifter. This book was previously published as Moon Bound, and has since undergone major edits that alter the plot and characters, and expands the world and lore.

“You’re a long way from home, aren’t you, witch?”

Call it fate or Hecate
Say it was Freya’s fault…again.
But, no matter what two souls are about to unite and cause more than just ripples that affect everyone.

The darkness is going to pull her under the current and a shifter is going to fight to keep her head above water.

Only time will tell if she could be the one to stand with his pack and handle her magic…before those who seek to control her drag her further into the darkness.

Mine. She isn’t mine, not formally, nor will she ever mine.

Picking up from where the story was left, Carina is still sneaking off to see a glimpse of the shifter wolf who she can’t stay away from. Only now he’s caught her scent and no witchy power is strong enough to keep this beast at bay now.

I like the introduction to Carina’s character in the previous book and now her story is coming to light. The witch's side is coming more to light, with Carina being the only water elemental and if she will follow in her mother’s footsteps of being the next High Priestess of the Highridge Coven. There is a lot more to find out in this story, learning more about the dark magic and how Carina is now the next target who they are wanting to claim.

The lone shifter known as Ryder, is not just any shifter but the new Alpha of the Coldcrest Pack. And, now his wolf has caught the scent of Carina and recognises her as his mate. Ryder’s father has been cursed with black magic weakening him and the only hope is for Ryder to hand over a witch named Carina. As luck would have it, the treaty meeting with the witches reveals the very one who he stalked in his woods.

It was a classic storyline that worked really well for these characters. Ryder was fighting his wolf instincts every time Carina was near him and the tension was brewing between these two characters. You really were rooting for them, waiting for those moments when the tension became too much and they collided together. The emotions came rushing out, weaving through the story and causing a waterfall effect for every character.

Of course Freya is holding her own show with us as we read and her quirky style keeps us on our toes-or rather paws again. I love the switches in this series you get even more from the overall storyline. A lot of hints, easter eggs and pieces of the puzzle are starting to come out to play now.

As Freya would no doubt say- “It’s just getting started…so grab the popcorn!”

“This is why, little witch, you should have ran from the big bad wolf.”

Give me all the stories, all the couples and all the world building IMMEDIATELY!

The way this book sucks you deeper and deeper into this world, with the magic system, the new characters and powers, the discoveries and plot twists…immaculate storytelling. All of that wrapped in the utmost perfect bow of angst, romance and love that the two MCs developed.

This was definitely a slow burn but the sweetest kind. Both Carina and Ryder were such deep characters, bound by duty and loyalty to their given roles, by fate and desires out of their control, but them finding each other was the best thing, the thing they both needed to be free, even with the danger and pain they had to go through.

Now I don’t want to spoil but the way the plot in this book was written it just makes you crave the rest of the stories not even because the couples are going to be incredible, but the moving parts in the background, the secrets and hidden key elements are screaming for attention and will not be denied.

M.L. Philpitt, I truly beg on my knees for books 3,4&5 as soon as possible, with a request for not only Leah and Xanders book, but Rowan and Archer and the Devil and his bride…because everyone needs love and I ESPECIALLY need to read about it, like I said…ASAP!

I’m beyond thankful for the opportunity to read this early, goddess knows I would have perished waiting for more of this world…

FIRST OFF, stop right now and go read DARK FLAME..
It really makes everything about this book so much better!~

I am in love with this series…

Carina finds herself being pulled to the wolf shifter, heir of the alpha. She has been able to find him at the same place, at the same time. So imagine her surprise when he can see her through her protection spell. Then imagine when he asks for her, by name, at a treaty gathering later that same night?

Carina is so very loyal. To her coven, her mother, even to a shifter pack!
I love how she struggled with a lot of feelings but when it came to saving the people around her, she did not hesitate. She finds out about her start in this world and it really breaks her heart but never her spirit.

Ryder is hit with a hard path as the new alpha. A dark witch has attacked his pack and forced his hand. Now, he must ask the witches for one of their own. He finds that his loyalties change instantly.

I love the pack! The way they understand their alpha and give him grace.
Ryder is so great. He loves so fiercely, he also feels his emotions in a way that I was not expecting. He is so good with Carina, taking care of her in more than just primal ways.

Also, I cannot forget about Freya. She really is perfect. Always has me cackling.
She keeps the story going but keeps the suspense going too.

Dark Mist took me on a roller coaster of emotions. So much heartbreak, so much healing, so much yearning!

Excited to dive into the next installment. I will be waiting patiently!

Thank you M.L. & Torch Lit! ARC read. All opinions are my own.

First, I just want to say how much I loved Dark Flame (book 1) and these books shouldn't be read as standalone. I was so excited to dive into this one because shifters are my fav, all that possessiveness, grrrr…and fated mates are always the best (you can't fight destiny!!!)
Honestly, this book didn’t go in the direction I was hoping/expecting.
It started strong, with Ryder acknowledging the bond pretty quickly. Then the story kind of lingered until picking up again around 60%.
I didn’t really relate to Carina… she was strong and then suddenly weak as a noodle. And to be honest, I found the chemistry a bit off, maybe because I’m a sucker for enemies-to-lovers? These two were basically attracted to each other from the very beginning. However, Carina raised a very good concern "what if we were not fated mates?" still waiting for the answer....

Overall, I enjoyed this one, but I just wanted more...maybe more darkness. Carina basically stayed one night at Sloane’s place…
✅ wolf vs witch 🐺🧙
✅ fated mate
✅ rejected mate 💔
❌ third-act breakup (always annoys me… still waiting for Ryder to make her pay for running away)
❌ no virgin, unfortunately
❌ low on spice 🌶️

And please tell me I’m not the only one who wants the story of the Devil and his stolen mate/bride right now???

Who knew I would love a paranormal romance series so much!!! I am glad this series fell into my lap and have loved each book so much! Each book features a different couple, this one focuses on Carina and Ryder and I loved the tension and emotions that brewed between this two as they try to not only figure each other out but how their lives as a witch and a wolf shifter will affect each other, their coven and pack and the world itself. We see past characters from the first book and get glimpses of possible future characters for the other books. It’s fun to guess what couple is next and who will end up with who! Per usual, the First Witch, Freya’s parts and little intermissions were so good and not only build on the story but left you wondering how she truly fits in because she herself is under the Goddess Hecate. I love how each book contains a specific story but it fits into the overall big story that we as readers are trying to figure out and learn a little bit of information with each book. The world building, the elemental magic, the different shifters, witches, gods, demons and learning each person/creature will affect the story makes the book hard to put down. The author is weaving together quite a story and I hope each book adds to the adventure and we finish with an epic ending.

Dark Mist is Book 2 in the Black Magick series by M.L. Philpitt.
It is highly recommended to read Book 1 for background and world-building.
Carina has always been loyal—to her coven, to her mother, and to the path set before her. As a High Priestess in training, her curiosity often pulls her toward truths she may not be ready to face. Though moments of strength shine through, doubt and uncertainty still linger in the shadows.
Ryder, the newly appointed Alpha of a neighboring pack, carries the weight of leadership on his shoulders. Strong, fiercely loyal, and devoted to his people, he is no stranger to threats—but this time the cost is personal. To save a family member, he is forced into an impossible choice: surrender a witch to the dark coven.
When fate intervenes in the most unexpected way, everything changes.
Fated mates. Shifting loyalties. Dangerous alliances.
As emotions collide with duty, Carina and Ryder must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice—because in a world of dark magick and ancient rivalries, love may be the most dangerous force of all.

Spice: 🌶🌶
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️

Do you love a shifter x witch romance, with high stakes and fated mates, where he falls first and the slow burn sizzles? Me too - please can I introduce you to M.L. Philpitt's Black Magick series.

Book 1, Dark Flame, is one of my favourite reads of the year, so I've been super excited for Dark Mist 🤩 And the wait was so worth it!

As with book 1, I love the way the story is told/narrated. It's fun and unique and would make a fantastic TV series!

Our witchy FMC, Carina, is a high priestess in training who is increasingly curious about the neighbouring shifter pack and often crosses into forbidden territory for a sneak peek.

Our MMC, Ryder, is the newly appointed Alpha of said pack who one day stumbles upon a little witch spying on him.

A couple of bargains/exchanges later, and they soon realise that neither live up to the expected reputation.

Eeek! I love these two. Ryder's inner monologue is so cute and has me kicking my feet with joy and smiling my head off! It's such a different dynamic to Harlow & Alec from book 1, and I honestly don't know which I prefer. I adore both 😍

𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲:
Dual 1st person POV
Wolves x Witches
He falls first and HARD!
Fated mates
All the feels 🥺
Slow burn
Spicy

Honestly, this series is so addictive. I stayed up well past my bedtime to get my fix! Go get your fix, quick!

3.5⭐️, 2 🌶️

This was an easy read, but sadly I do not think I enjoyed it as much as the first one.

I thought the plot was interesting and I liked the idea of the romance for this one, but unfortunately I felt like the MMC’s personality was lacking for me which made it hard to be in his POV for half of the book. Regardless of it being a shifter book I felt like the MMC’s only personality trait was that he was an alpha and I just wanted more from him.

With that being said I did like the FMC and enjoyed her POV chapters. It was nice learning new info in this one about the upcoming war and prophecies and just where the story is going. I liked the side characters and thought that they helped add to the story and am interested in some of their future stories.

I will most likely read the next one in this series just because I like the interconnected standalones and the next one sounds really interesting! I definitely want to see where this series goes.

Another 5 ⭐️ read in M.L. Philpitt's Black Magick Series!!

Going back into the world of Black Magick, ugh. Reading this book made me want to re-read Dark Flame because, well, why not? Reading about Carina and Ryder 😍😍😍 I love them!!!

M.L. Philpitt had me all in my emotions again -- making me either want to smash Carina and Ryder together or . And ugh, I cried when certain things happened 😭😭.

Without spoiling a lot, just know you will not be bored with this book. It is entertaining, deep, and relatable in a sense if you are the older sibling and you know you have responsibilities, well then this book is for you! Start your journey into Black Magick with the first in the series, Dark Flame!

Thank you to M.L. Phillpitt and Torch Lit Ink for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I was a little worried when I realised that this was the second book of the series. I haven’t read book one. Still, I needn’t have worried. I was drawn straight into this magical new world this author has created. It had me totally captivated. I loved Carina, Ryder and all the new characters. I was so intrigued by all their special abilities.

It's been so long since I’ve read paranormal romance. It was like coming home reading this book. I will definitely be doing a re-read, after reading book one. Can’t wait for the next book as well.

After reading Dark Flame, I was super excited to read this next book. You definitely need to read book one before reading this in order to fully understand everything that is occurring.

If you love a good story about fated mates, shifters, witches and found love then this the book for you. Carina and Ryder are quite a pair. While she's trying to be loyal to her coven; he's trying to do what's right for his pack.

I absolutely loved the slow burn aspect of this book. I'm starting to really like these paranormal romance books. This is a four out of five star read for me.

We follow the second couple of the series, a witch and a wolf shifter.
With it there are secrets, conflict, darkness and our favourite first witch.

This book was vastly different to book one, the author captured the complex and tense relationships between wolf shifters and the witch coven. I enjoyed seeing Ryder and Carina's story evolve, and slowly seeing the whole world being pieced together. Enjoyed every single minute of it, so much I couldnt put it down.

I can't wait to read book 3!

Dark Mist is a thrilling paranormal romance that combines magic, danger, and a slow burning fated mates romance. Carina and Ryder’s chemistry is electric, and the expanded world-building makes this reimagined story even more immersive. Fans of witches, wolves, and high stakes romance will be hooked from start to finish.

Thank you M.L. Philpitt and Torch Lit Ink for an advanced copy of this book!

This is book 2 in the Black Magick series and you should definitely start with Dark Flame (Book 1).

I loved Ryder and Carina’s story so much, but I’m a sucker for fated mates! 🥰😍 We get both a HEA and a bit of a cliffhanger. It’s so dang good!

Definitely much more tame than Dark Flame. Like even though each book will be a standalone, but can be read as a series, I do feel that the best way to not feel muddled when you see names…is to read the 1st book aka Dark Flame. It’s an intense read…& sometimes I do want to smack the FL & the ML at times. All in all, a great read though~

The two main characters are Carina and Ryder. She is a witch and he is a wolf shifter.
Book 1 is Harlow and Alec’s story and it sounds SO good! I have to read it!
There are Vampires, witches, magic and wolf shifters.
There is a predicted War incoming.
- He has to kidnap Carina from the High Priestess and give her over to the dark magic coven to help save his father ex-Alpha. She has been following him. He feels this pull.
-I love the intermissions with Freya
-Book 3 Dark Storm Wynter and Caden is coming next!
-And the author talked about a Leah and Xander- spinoff

*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*

Thank you for doing a recap! Every author needs to do this with their books. There are things in this book that happen and I’m like why? Haha why go through all this trouble and drug her when if you simply said something, she would have gone willingly. I feel like this book is too long, there are parts I would have condensed or gotten rid of. I’m a sucker for a fated mates book though. Overall it was ok, I prefer the first book personally.
