Disclosure: I received an early copy of The Amulet in exchange for sharing my honest thoughts. As always, these are entirely my own opinions. Please note that this review may contain spoilers.
Let’s start with what I absolutely loved—because there’s a lot!
The slow burn romance between the captive and the captor’s son was such a highlight. It was adorable watching their relationship evolve from sharp bickering to playful teasing, then subtle glances, and eventually, genuine affection. Their dynamic was full of chemistry and heart, and it truly carried the emotional core of the story for me.
Another big plus: this book surprised me in ways I didn’t expect. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the plot threw in elements that caught me off guard—in the best way possible. I always appreciate a good surprise, and The Amulet delivered.
What really stood out, though, was the prince’s internal struggle with anger and his new, overwhelming power. The emotional depth and realism in how he navigated that rage and learned to control it were incredibly immersive. When he was angry, I felt that anger bleeding through the pages—it was intense and brilliantly written.
And can I just say—while most people love a killer first sentence, here it was the last sentence that left the biggest impact. It put a huge, goofy smile on my face. I closed the book feeling genuinely satisfied, which is such a rare and wonderful feeling.
That said, there were a couple of things that left me puzzled.
First, the old lady who sold the prince some clothes… what was that about? She knew everything—Cosette's exact size, who the clothes were for—and then just vanished. The scene felt like it was building up to something important, but she never appeared again, which left me with a lingering “what just happened?” vibe.
Then there’s the rebellion leader. He started out as such a likable, principled character, but when the actual battle neared, his sudden personality shift felt really abrupt and unexplained. It was jarring, and I kept wondering if I missed something.
Still, despite those few confusing moments, I absolutely loved The Amulet. I’m so grateful I got the chance to read it early, and I hope this review encourages others to pick it up. It’s a heartfelt, exciting, and surprising journey worth taking.
