Once again, I originally picked this book for the cover! Absolutely fell in love with the deceptively simple concept created by An-Nhien Nguyen, with those contrasting colours and strong lines. The plot sounded good, and anything with romance, fantasy and DRAGONS is right up my alley.
But boy, was I wholly unprepared for the whammy that this book delivered!!
The world-building is one of the most intricate I’ve ever read and I would say it rivals some of the greats. You might find it a little dense at first but I beg you to persevere - once you get sucked in, there is no escape.
Iris Rivera has crafted a world populated by several Fae races, boasting a well-developed magic system (the Shades are delightfully repulsive, and I can’t wait to learn more about the Source), a detailed mythology (loved learning about the different gods and the origin story), with a history spanning millennia.
Settings range from the urban to the bucolic and all are beautifully painted and populated with many interesting characters. A detailed social order, with its fair share of inequalities and prejudices, provides food for reflection. And complex political games, with shifting alliances and rivalries, are progressively unveiled.
Honestly, the whole setting is simply mind-blowing. I kind of want to do a re-read just to focus on the descriptions.
The plot and action scenes are also gripping: Adeline, a young Fae, lives in a kingdom blighted by a dark curse. Parasite-like Shades are spreading and infecting its population. Adeline’s unusual fyra magic allows her to hunt and destroy those creatures, but she’s hiding another, much more dangerous ability. Despite keeping this secret, she’s managed to join the elite ranks of the Keepers of the realm, under the command of the Crown Prince. But when her best friend disappears during a mission for the King, Adeline is suddenly trust under the scrutiny of the royal family. She soon learns that nothing and no-one is as it seems in the realm of Ilion… and uncovering the secrets of the past might be the key to lifting the curse.
The romance is mostly kept within the realm of intense yearning; probably a slow-burn as it gets while remaining in the romantic fantasy territory. Kaos, the MMC is strong, loyal, protective, and so very caring (I mean, he WASHES HER HAIR! ). Big, big green flag for me, absolutely love him. Adeline is both determined and vulnerable, with so much heart and sense of fairness and justice. A whole cast of well fleshed-out secondary characters, endearing, infuriating or plain creepy, add to the immersive experience.
I could write a lot more, but honestly I’d rather tell you to get off the web and go read it now. I truly wouldn’t be surprised if it became a classic of the genre.
Thank you so much Iris for this story, can’t wait for the next!! That cliffhanger is just killing me!
PS: This is a big book, so I’d schedule in some proper reading time: Kindle promised me 12 hours, I think I finished in about 10-ish, and I was so caught up that my husband threatened to hide my tablet away.
