The Erilonne Trilogy #1

Where the Dragons Sleep

Rate this book
When King Émeric struck down the last Dragon King of the corrupt Shadow Court, the Realm of Ilion spiraled towards an uncertain future. In his final moments, the Dragon King placed a curse on the Old Kingdom, so that anyone who ventured in to retrieve the crown of Ilion and take its power for themselves, would suffer from incurable madness.
Two centuries have passed since the war and Adeline, a royal guard in the capital city of Caldera, has clawed her way to an elite position as a Keeper despite her status as a Halfling Fae. She possesses the unusual ability to find and eliminate the Shades, the shadow demons spawned by the Curse that still strangles Ilion. This ability, however, stems from the deadly magic that runs in her family, and she must be wary of drawing unwanted attention to it. Especially when she is under the command of the General of Ilion, who seems prepared to challenge her at every turn.

When her best friend vanishes on a mission to retrieve the crown and break the curse, details about the history she’s been taught begin to transform before her eyes. Forced to confront dark realities about her own powers, Adeline must navigate a treacherous path, balancing her duty to the realm with her own survival if she’s going to save her friend.

Aided by a mysterious queen and an ancient warrior race, Adeline and the General form a precarious alliance as they delve deeper into the secrets of the past. She must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice in order to discover what the Gods and the Fates have in store for them all.

5⭐️ I don’t even know where to start with this book... it is SO freakin’ good. I read it a bit ago and still cannot stop thinking about it. The YEARNING. The TENSION. THIS is how it’s done.

The world is one of the most unique and immersive I’ve read in a long time, intricate, mysterious, and well developed without feeling overwhelming. The descriptions are vivid and atmospheric in a way that pulls you in and makes you feel like you’re walking alongside the characters.

The Court Under the Hill was one of the coolest and most intriguing parts of the world. It felt eerie and enchanting in the best possible way; every detail was rich with meaning. I was completely captivated by Oona especially. She is so cool. I need to know more about her!

As for the romance… I am fully invested. Khaos has me in a chokehold. I adored seeing his dynamic with Addie evolve. There’s such an intense undercurrent of longing, restraint, and tension, and I cannot wait to see how things develop between them moving forward.

Tropes:
🗡️ Trainer x Trainee
🌌 Unknown Powers
🐉 Mythical Creatures
🔀 Twists and Turns
💘 Secret Cinnamon Roll MMC
⚔️ Reluctant Allies
🪮 Hair Tending

Spice Level: 🌶️
Green pepper to 1 red pepper — light on-page spice, but the tension and chemistry are off the charts.

This has definitely been one of the best books I have read in a long time! ✨

I have been so excited about this book for a while, and I had the privilege to receive an ARC copy. Best day ever!!! 🤩

There are so many things I LOVED about this book, first of all it is beautifully written, the story is easy to follow, captivating, and so wide, there is a lot of potential here for the sequels. And I just can’t wait to know what happens next!!

Who doesn’t love a Fae with elemental magic?? And a book with a curse, dragons, and secrets, and mates?? SIGN ME UP!!! 😍

Now, about the main characters, Addie is just amazing, she is an strong FMC, with a great backstory and so much to learn, can’t wait to see her growth, and how everything unravels. She is so fierce.

Khaos is definitely my new favorite MMC, he is just everything I ever dreamed he would be!! ❤️ Who doesn’t love a Fae Male written by a woman??? 🥰 His personality, his tattoos, his actions, OMG I’m so in love!!

This book is the debut novel of Iris Rivera, and I must say she knows what she is doing, she made something extraordinary. I’m sure she has a bright future ahead of her! ✨

Please please please if you take a chance on this book, go to the author’s instagram post and look for her vision of the places, and characters. You will see this book as a complete new experience. 👌🏻 ❤️

My first experience as an ARC girlie did not disappoint! Iris Rivera has created such an incredible world in her book, Where The Dragons Sleep. The unique magic system, the characters, and the intense relationships will have me begging everyone I know to read this book so that we can theorize together about what's coming next in Adeline's story.
July 22nd cannot come fast enough.
Rating: 5 stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Cry counter: 2 (Iris, how could you do this to me! I hardly ever cry during the first book in a series.)
Great for readers who have enjoyed books like Crescent City and Promised In Fire.

THIS is how your write a first book in a Romantasy series!! The most thoughtful world-building, lore, and magic system I’ve read in a first book in a VERY long time. This book had me intrigued at the start, surprised in the middle, and amazed at the journey.

I will 100% be reading it again before the second book comes out because I refuse to miss any of the breadcrumbs Iris Rivera thoughtfully placed in this book to set us up for book 2!

This book is more fantasy forward, with a slow burn romance subplot. Based on that, I am so excited for book 2 because I know it will continue to evolve as we move toward what is bound to be an epic journey and thoughtful romance.

Without giving anything away, this is the story of a female warrior who is determined to prove she’s more valuable than the limitations of her humble beginnings. An evil has set over Caldera and Adeline has a gift that has allowed her to fight it, even if on a small scale. But the evil is growing stronger, and the histories they’ve been told are full of half truths. Addie doesn’t know it, but she’s vulnerable, and powerful. This is a story of good vs evil, survival, and stepping into your power in your own terms.

Where the Dragons Sleep is a beautifully written story with vivid descriptions of characters and places. It’s truly captivating, with a narrative voice that is both serious and witty, pulling the reader into Addie‘s world. The character’s transformation feels authentic, making the story engaging, pulling you into the realm of ancient magic, shadowed forests, and a journey of self discovery. This richly imagined world, is complete with detailed history of dragons past.
The relationship between Khaos and Addie is intense. As the story unfolds so does their love for each other.
Easy to follow storyline, the pacing is excellent, keeping me hooked from the first page to the last.
I highly recommend Where the Dragons Sleep to anyone who loves well-developed characters, , sharp dialogue, and a romance that will stay with you long after you finish the last page!
Well done, Iris Rivera!!

Couldn’t get over all the punctuation errors. Not sure why this one is so highly rated. I feel like the plot dragged and it was not worth 500+ pages of writing to tell this story.

This book grips you from the front page. It's immersive, it's dark and it's complex (in a good way) straight from the outset. I think it's obvious who is the love interest pretty quickly, but I'm not mad at that, I loved it. He was great and I kept kicking my legs and squealing at the moments between them.

The story had mature characters, that helped with the behaviour, body language and decision making - although there is a miscommunication trope in there - which had me itching to jump in the book and yell at them - but that's all part of the ride! Fae characters, but not in the typical way you'd expect from current fiction. It was great for the world-building and explaining the lifespan of some of the characters.

The twists and turns in this book keep you continuously guessing, one moment you think you know and the other, you're blown away. (I won't cover much information to avoid posting spoilers). The obstacles and events that the characters go through really shape the characters decisions and I think that makes the experience more immersive and believable.

If you love Fourth Wing, this will be right up your street, there is a military influence and (surprisingly) dragons, but it stands on its own as a great work of fiction.

Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read this ahead of publication.

I am absolutely blown away that this is the authors first book. It was so well written. I was drawn into the story right from the beginning. It flowed well and was easy to follow. The world and magic wasn’t so complex that it made it difficult to understand.

I loved the FMC Addie. She is physically strong and fierce but also faces some insecurities that make her very relatable.

And Khaos…OMG. This male is everything I want in a book boyfriend. Dark, devastatingly handsome and a grump (just to our FMC of course). I need to learn more about those tattoos please.

I’m so excited to see where this journey will go. There are so many opportunities for some amazing characters arcs.

Please, please, please go read this book!!!

Quite literally my favourite read of this year. Run, do not walk. You like Rowan and Aelin from TOG? Khaos and Addie are now new competition 😭🙌 the most beautiful world-building with a captivating plot + some of the best romance I’ve EVER read. RUN. RUN NOW. You can thank me later.

Once again, I originally picked this book for the cover! Absolutely fell in love with the deceptively simple concept created by An-Nhien Nguyen, with those contrasting colours and strong lines. The plot sounded good, and anything with romance, fantasy and DRAGONS is right up my alley.

But boy, was I wholly unprepared for the whammy that this book delivered!!

The world-building is one of the most intricate I’ve ever read and I would say it rivals some of the greats. You might find it a little dense at first but I beg you to persevere - once you get sucked in, there is no escape.

Iris Rivera has crafted a world populated by several Fae races, boasting a well-developed magic system (the Shades are delightfully repulsive, and I can’t wait to learn more about the Source), a detailed mythology (loved learning about the different gods and the origin story), with a history spanning millennia.

Settings range from the urban to the bucolic and all are beautifully painted and populated with many interesting characters. A detailed social order, with its fair share of inequalities and prejudices, provides food for reflection. And complex political games, with shifting alliances and rivalries, are progressively unveiled.

Honestly, the whole setting is simply mind-blowing. I kind of want to do a re-read just to focus on the descriptions.

The plot and action scenes are also gripping: Adeline, a young Fae, lives in a kingdom blighted by a dark curse. Parasite-like Shades are spreading and infecting its population. Adeline’s unusual fyra magic allows her to hunt and destroy those creatures, but she’s hiding another, much more dangerous ability. Despite keeping this secret, she’s managed to join the elite ranks of the Keepers of the realm, under the command of the Crown Prince. But when her best friend disappears during a mission for the King, Adeline is suddenly trust under the scrutiny of the royal family. She soon learns that nothing and no-one is as it seems in the realm of Ilion… and uncovering the secrets of the past might be the key to lifting the curse.

The romance is mostly kept within the realm of intense yearning; probably a slow-burn as it gets while remaining in the romantic fantasy territory. Kaos, the MMC is strong, loyal, protective, and so very caring (I mean, he WASHES HER HAIR! ). Big, big green flag for me, absolutely love him. Adeline is both determined and vulnerable, with so much heart and sense of fairness and justice. A whole cast of well fleshed-out secondary characters, endearing, infuriating or plain creepy, add to the immersive experience.

I could write a lot more, but honestly I’d rather tell you to get off the web and go read it now. I truly wouldn’t be surprised if it became a classic of the genre.

Thank you so much Iris for this story, can’t wait for the next!! That cliffhanger is just killing me!

PS: This is a big book, so I’d schedule in some proper reading time: Kindle promised me 12 hours, I think I finished in about 10-ish, and I was so caught up that my husband threatened to hide my tablet away.

Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all thoughts are my own.

What an absolutely amazing book. Wow. For the majority of it, I loved every single second and I never wanted it to end. It was just that good. A bi FMC who is 31 (yes please?!), great writing and descriptions, fantastic pacing, the vulnerable and open conversation between our MCs, the revelations and epic moments? It just kept getting better and better.

Unfortunately, I think the final 20% felt just a bit underdeveloped and I think people made some odd choices and a few things felt... off.

Those were minor things, but my biggest issue was how Khaos suddenly became incredibly toxic during a specific scene.

I'm sad there was even a single thing I had an issue with in this book, because otherwise I loved it so damn much. It was an amazing story, Addie was a great FMC, and even though it had a lot of the same building blocks as other romantasies, it managed to stand completely on its own. It was so close to being perfect! If the minor issues hadn't been there, I think it would have made it in my top 5 reads this year. What a debut!

Where the Dragons Sleep by Iris Rivera is actually my first shifter fantasy (and I’m still figuring out how I feel about the genre) but this was a really solid start.

We follow Adeline, who can wield both shadows and fire, and oh... . Cool cool. Then there’s Khaos, our panther-shifter MMC who controls air and is basically one big ball of yearning. The main plot follows a pretty familiar setup: . But the story still felt fresh thanks to the rich worldbuilding and a surprisingly layered magic system. The Wilds were fascinating, Makarios sounded magical, and I loved the descriptions of the Underling Fae.

The “shades” were also a great addition. They definitely had that zombie-adjacent creep factor. Once the plot picked up, I blew through the rest of the book in like, a day.

That said…

Also, I adored Khaos right up until that It felt wildly out of place and honestly soured my view of him for a bit. I get the whole “I’m not worthy of love” angle, but come on. Nadir from Artefacts of Ouranos (my love <3 ) also felt unworthy and still had the guts to love openly. Khaos could learn a thing or two. Adeline, though, was great. Strong, capable, and not grating like a lot of fantasy heroines can be. I liked her a lot.

Despite the few hiccups, I’m giving this a solid 4ish stars. The world sucked me in, the magic was fun, and I’m definitely picking up book 2 when it drops.

I love a book that has me rereading sentences—because they’re so beautiful that I want to enjoy them again. This book had a lot of those moments for me. I loved slowing down and taking my time with it, getting lost in the detailed descriptions, letting the images take form in my mind. As someone who’s into history and mythology, I found myself wanting more of the backstory right from the start, curious about how things had gotten to the point they were. The pacing felt perfect to me. It wasn’t too slow, just steady enough to keep me tethered and coming back.

Even more, I enjoyed submerging myself in the emotional experience this book offered. It didn’t bypass, it didn’t suppress, even the difficult stuff. Even though the FMC is fae, her thoughts and feelings felt deeply human and relatable. I found myself reacting to what she was going through like I was right there with her. It wasn’t always pleasant (as expected for a fantasy book), but the fact that I was feeling it all says a lot about the emotional depth the author wove into the story. It didn’t feel like the story existed outside of me—it felt like something I became a part of.

The romance had me kicking my feet. I found myself really appreciating the lack of 🌶️ (though I don’t mind it later in the series). It made space for a kind of tender tension that I cherished, where the subtle became substantial.

In addition to the beautiful writing, there were instances in the book that made me giggle. Like:
“I can provide you with everything the General can, and more.” She lifts a brow at me as she speaks those last words, with a small, suggestive curve of her lips.

Or: “Well, Highness, I hope I am right about this theory.” Iykyk.

All in all, a big, heartfelt recommendation from me ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

This is the kind of fantasy that wraps around you slowly — then refuses to let go. Where the Dragons Sleep is a beautifully layered, plot-driven story that feels both expansive and intimate, filled with political intrigue, rich lore, and the quiet ache of longing.

Rivera’s worldbuilding is stunning. Each new location is painted with such vivid imagery — I could feel the chill of the mountains, smell the damp of ancient stone, and hear the crackle of magic beneath the surface. The plot never stays still for long, with revelations, characters, and alliances unfolding with purpose and clarity, never feeling overwhelming or rushed.

The protagonist is a standout — a fierce but deeply human heroine, strong-willed yet emotionally complex, whose vulnerability only made me root for her more. The male lead is her perfect foil: closed-off, duty-bound, and brooding, but careful and considerate beneath it all. He’s a soft-hearted, “speak now or forever smoulder” kind of consent king, and their dynamic simmers with unresolved tension that had me screaming just kiss already into the void.

If you’re here for spice, this one leans more into yearning and slow-burn tension — but the emotional payoff is worth it. The found family vibes? Delicious. Layered. Unexpected in the best way. I also loved how secrets were revealed throughout — keeping me hooked and guessing without relying on cheap twists.

Rivera’s writing is lyrical without being overdone, and the emotional beats land with weight. I was invested from page one to the end — and I’m already itching for the sequel.

This book reminded me why I love epic fantasy so much. The world building is intricate in the best way: rich, layered, and full of deep lore, yet never overwhelming. The magic system, the history, the places, the atmosphere, all of it felt so cinematic that I could see every scene unfolding in my head. The amount of detail that went into each character and location honestly amazed me. It’s the kind of craftsmanship that makes every fantasy lover’s heart beat a little faster.

The dynamic between the FMC and MMC was fantastic. The tension and yearning were off the charts, and I found myself rooting for them immediately. It also felt so refreshing that the romance and spice didn’t take over the plot. He’s such a cinnamon roll and a walking green flag. My friend Abigail called him the “king of consent,” and I truly can’t think of a better description 🤭.

I absolutely loved the writing style. It’s so easy to fall into this story, and Iris Rivera has a way with words that makes you keep turning the pages. And just when I thought I knew where things were going, the story would twist in a completely different direction. I was suspicious of everyone, and I’m still reeling from that ending!

Long story short: this is such a strong first book in a series, and I cannot wait for Iris to share the next installment. I’m already calling myself a fan.

4.5 rounded up to 5!

This book grabs you from the start, with the gorgeous cover and the descriptive plot. This book is very plot-driven, without being boring. Political intrigue, shifters, bisexual FMC, and expansive imagery? Yes please.

Iris Rivera's use of imagery and details truly brought this story to life. Every location, every plot point was so vivid I couldnt help but feel I was right there with the characters. The storyline is also never dull, with new action or scenes around every corner. The perfect mix of plot, conversation, yearning and suspense.

The FMC and MMC contradict each other perfectly in a beautiful way. Our FMC is strong yet vulnerable, who wears her heart on her sleeve, whereas our MMC is quiet, broody, and complex. The perfect amount of tension and yearning that will bring back everyone for book 2, plot or no plot.

I cant wait for book 2!!

Thank you so much to the author for an eARC copy. This review is voluntary and my own opinion.

Packed full of Fae, dragons and enemies to lovers, Addie finds herself searching for a missing friend. When Khaos, the prickly General, sees a secret power manifest in her, any hope of flying under his radar disappears. Her kingdom’s history is turned upside down and Addie must figure out who she trusts as well as who she truly is, because one thing’s for sure--she’s more than anyone expected.

I found this to be easy to read and engaging. I loved the themes between the two kingdoms. I loved questioning which one is actually evil.

Addie was a really strong FMC, I loved the MMC and the development of the side characters, like Aeon

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, so it checked that off, and I also loved the development of the side characters, like Aeon. There was betrayal, there was love, there were dragons and magic. I very much look forward to the next one!

3.5 stars; 1 for spice.

Two hundred years after the fall of the Dragon King and the Shadow Court, Ilion still suffers under a lingering curse. Adeline has fought her way to the rank of Keeper and hides a dangerous magic while she hunts the shades born of that curse.

When her closest friend disappears on a mission set by the crown, she uncovers truths that unravel everything she thought she knew. Forced into an uneasy alliance with her commanding officer, she sets out to look for her friend—and that’s where the story truly begins.

The worldbuilding was easy to follow, and the plot itself is both unique and immersive and the romance was full of yearning.

Now, I don’t know what the opposite of the miscommunication trope is, but this book had it in spades. The characters constantly voiced every thought and feeling, to the point where I actually found myself missing miscommunication drama (something I never thought I’d say!). Because of that, the declarations of love lost some of their impact. Spice level? Definitely a one-pepper read.

Some character choices also pulled me out of the story. There’s a level of naivety and blind trust that felt unrealistic given they’re in the middle of a war and these are grown adults.

Secondary characters are plentiful, but a bit underdeveloped, which made them harder to connect with.

That said, the ending was strong and leaves you eager to continue the series—I just hope the story is a bit tighter and packs a more dramatic punch.

I've got an e arc for an honest review

I'm not going to say much about it as I want you to go into this story and fall in love with the world building which is just amazing you can literally visualise it.

The yearning, longing, banter and real tension between Khaos and Addie as we see their relationship build and develop through out the book. The moments of trust, jealousy and just everything the reason why I gave 🔥🔥is the the tension and fire that ignite in the wanting.

I would add more but I really don't want to give anything away and I'm very sleepy so. Enjoy the adventure.

I'm not ready for the next book, as I'm not over the ending...

You know when you finish a book and then you just sit there stunned thinking… what just happened?!? That’s where I’m at right now…

Why aren’t more people talking about this book?! Wow! It has ruined me in the best way possible. I’m still processing the cliffhanger I was left with. I need more people to get on this train so I know there are others out there with the same emotional damage as me right now!

A dark MMC with a nickname of the General? Yes. Dragons? Yes. A bad ass FMC? Yes. Fated mates? Yes. Main characters on a quest to save the world? Yes! I’m telling you this book has it all!

Give this one a chance! You won’t be disappointed.

A delightful fantasy with my favorite trope of all time: slow burn 🔥

Besides the romance, the plot also feels a bit like a slow burn, eventually gaining momentum. The FMC is likable and cares deeply and pretty badass, the MMC has a tortured hero thing going on that works for him. There was some absolutely beautiful writing and the worldbuilding was amazing! If you’re a fantasy stan who loves dragons, this one’s definitely for you :)

Where the Dragons Sleep was one of the best romantasy books I read this past year. I loved the plot, the political intrigue, and the yearning, but what stood out most to me were the characters. It was refreshing to read about mature characters with fully developed frontal lobes, people who think, communicate, and act with intention. While I adored Khaos, Addie might be one of my favorite female main characters ever. I related to her deeply, and I can’t wait for the second book to come out.

This book was incredible! For a first time author I was so surprised at the quality of the worldbuilding. Iris was able to transport me to every place in this book without anything feeling rinse and repeat.

The slow burn romance between the two MCs was unique, a welcome reprieve from the "enemies to lovers" tropes we see used all the time (my fav but also nice to see something new).

I'm excited to see where she takes this series!

I had so much fun reading this one. The dragon shifter fae was a fresh take and loved how extensive the fantasy world building was. Not to mention just how nice it was to read about characters in their late 20s and early 30s making mature decisions and building wholesome relationships throughout an epic gripping plot. So so much fun!!!

This book was absolutely perfect for me! A fantasy with dragon shifters? Plus, other shifters as well? With an interesting magic system? With a great plot and amazing world building? AND a slow burn on top of it all? YES, PLEASE! I have no words. This was an absolute 10/10 for me! You can find me crying in the corner until book 2 is out.
