Not Just a Soup Kitchen is the story of how God transformed the life of the author from near-death skull fracture, childhood sexual abuse, and spiritual bankruptcy to becoming the minister of mercy in the heart of Philadelphia. It is also an instructional guide for those serving in diaconal/mercy ministries.
The book was hit and miss. The first part of his story was great, and chapter 8 where he talked about experiences and trends with those in need was helpful because I saw the same things. It was reaffirming. Also I think chapter 11 where he talked about questions and process is a helpful reference.
Interesting. Good stories along with specifics on how to help and what not to do. Very helpful for anyone or any church wanting to begin a mercy ministry to those in need.
I thought it was a good book. A lot of good, practical advice for deacons and those in church leadership. There were a number of good takeaways for me. The author used a lot of personal stories, which was good but sometimes came off as boasting and it was a bit of a turnoff.
This is a very practical book. He offers numerous illustrations and several bullet point lists of advice. Valuable wisdom for those who are opening themselves up to be helpful to those in need.
