William Erwin Eisner was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, and his series The Spirit (1940–1952) was noted for its experiments in content and form. In 1978, he popularized the term "graphic novel" with the publication of his book A Contract with God. He was an early contributor to formal comics studies with his book Comics and Sequential Art (1985). The Eisner Award was named in his honor and is given to recognize achievements each year in the comics medium; he was one of the three inaugural inductees to the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
2 stars for most of the volume as the series is showing its age (including some "re-runs"), 4 stars for the Wally Wood space saga over the last couple of months.
The highlight of this volume is the OUTER SPACE SPIRIT chapters with art by Wallace (Wally) Wood and script by Jules Feiffer — all supervised by Eisner. The FOREWORD to this volume is by Paul Levitz and the INTRODUCTION is by yours truly, J. David Spurlock, Director of the Wallace Wood Estate. This is an important volume and historic event, the collaboration between such celebrated luminaries, Wallace Wood, Jules Feiffer and Will Eisner.
Two things give this book 5 Stars for me when otherwise it might have earned only 4: The Outer Space Spirit with gorgeous Wally Wood art and the occasional appearance by Ebony Wwhite, who I still believe was by far the better assistant to the Spirit.
