Vagle's book is a good resource and I would recommend it for a book study for collaborative teams with a lot of guidance and collaboration.

If teams have started the process of identifying and breaking down essential standards, the first part of the book may seem redundant.

I appreciated her discussions on engagement throughout. Writing engaging assessments is often not ever even considered.

Chapters 5 and 6 were the most useful for me as she outlines and discusses scoring (that makes learning relevant--not just a grade), getting students to invest in the learning with strategies, providing relevant and productive feedback, and creating collaborative assessments as a team.

An excellent overview of unit design, emphasizing really knowing the standards and level of complexity before designing both formative and summative assessments. I especially liked the strategies for having students analyze their own mistakes and learning needs before retaking assessments.

The ideas are excellent--I just find the presentation of the ideas in the book to be overly cumbersome. This is a good book to use as a reference book, but I was looking for a bit more...
