As a new 'horror' reader, I went into this book with eyes wide open and my head full of expectations. Slasher this, blood splatter that, a knife, a slit throat, or disemboweling gore. Thankfully, the majority of horror tropes that I was expecting weren't the focal point of this book... It was the heart of the characters, their relationships to one another, and the internal and external struggles they go through set against a pre-apocalyptic backdrop.
That isn't to say there weren't graphic details, blood, knives, guns, or the occasional person getting double tapped with an SUV--there were-- but the way Morgan Mourne melded these 'horror' elements into an 'every-persons' perspective through Izzy (the book's namesake) was relatable, humorous, and emotional. The heroes journey that Izzy goes on, wrestling with a dark family past of her father being a murderer, and her unexpected legacy, sends her on never ending path of self-discovery that dispels a lot of her previous biases, and opens her eyes to the truth... The world will be in peril unless Izzy does something about it.
Along the way we meet a host of other secondary characters with their own motivations and subtext that, at times, has you guessing who you can rely on, who's after Izzy for something, and who are downright creepy. The only true character that has Izzy's back through thick and thin though, is Edgar. I won't spoil how his innocence made me smile on more than one occasion, I'll simply say you'll love Edgar.
The Bone Collector's Daughter also introduces a myriad of locations. Each with their own grit, coloring, feeling, and descriptions that paint a beautiful mental image every time the characters go somewhere new. Along the way, Morgan Mourne's attention to detail was pristine, engaging all the senses as if I was really there smelling the fresh baked baguettes or doing the truffle-shuffle thanks to a tazer gun.
Finally, let's get to the horror. While not a slasher movie or a 'scare the poo out of me, jump from the closet poltergeist' type of terror, the stakes in this book were nothing short of apocalyptic if the heroes failed. Add in a dash of creepy basement men, brutish thugs popping out from the shadows, blood sacrifices, and of course the pivotal 'bones' in the story (that ultimately control the arrival of something terrible), and you've found yourself the perfect mix of action, adventure, and urban-horror encircling a strong, young, female protagonist who embraces her destiny.
The Bone Collector's Daughter was a great read filled with professional storytelling, great pacing, lush environments, and some laugh out loud dialog. Whether The Bone Collector's Daughter is part of a series or a stand-alone book, it is a smart, self-sufficient, page-turner that will have you guessing until the end and wanting more.
