Mystery at Mistletoe Place

Rate this book
Mistletoe, mulled wine… and murder? When a party turns fatal, Eve Mallow is on the case!

Arthur’s Boatyard is a jewel in the crown of Saxford St Peter, a famous firm that’s been fixing barges and boats for a hundred years. But their centenary celebration shows it’s not all plain sailing… The owner, Anthony Mottram, seems to be at daggers drawn with half the village. So when he turns up dead in his own workshop, Eve Mallow knows she needs to chart her path carefully if she’s to find his killer.

Accompanied by her stalwart sidekick, dachshund Gus, Eve sets out on decidedly choppy waters. Why did Anthony’s sister send him to the boatyard the night he died? Where has his ex-girlfriend vanished to? And what is his best friend and business partner hiding?

With her only clues a scarf, a scrap of paper and the smell of perfume, Eve must navigate an ocean of suspects who all have reasons to lie. But when the new owner of the boatyard is murdered, she knows she’s sailing close to the wind. Despite all the mince pies and the carol singing, someone is feeling far from festive. Can Eve make it through the storm and land her suspect, or will she be left dead in the water?

Number 15 in this series and Eve Mallow has yet another murder to investigate.

The mystery was good and there were plenty of possibilities for who the culprit might be, plus lots of red herrings to lead the reader astray. However there were a few too many characters hanging around and far too much time spent on Eve's pondering as to who the guilty party might be. It slowed the book right down and made it seem a little too long.

It was still very nice to spend time with Eve, Robin and Gus especially as Christmas was drawing closer in the book as well as in the real world!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

There were a lot of characters in this book and a lot of recapping of how they connected. Gus, the dog was sweet and adorable.,

I was blessed with an ARC. Thank you NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.

Running a local business for a century is a big deal, and Arthur's Boatyard in Saxford St Peter has a well-earned reputation for excellence. All is not as rosy as it appears, however, and when Eve Mallow and her best friend, Viv, discover a body during a night of celebrations, it seems as if everything is about to fall apart. With her husband, Robin, away on business, and her annual Christmas open house just around the corner, Eve has a lot to deal with already but knows she has to get involved. The pieces begin fitting together in a way that points to a culprit but after the discovery of a second body nothing seems to make sense any longer and Eve knows she has to up her game if she's to prevent more heartbreak. With secrets coming to the surface and the open house and Christmas getting ever closer, will the killer strike again before Eve has the chance to enjoy either day?

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Bookouture, but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this. All the potential suspects had very good reasons why they might have 'dunnit', .and the festive season didn't intrude into the storyline unrealistically. The main protagonists are all such old friends now that it's always a pleasure to reconnect with them and join in their fun. Highly recommended. 4.5 rounded up to 5*

I'm a big fan of this series and it's lovely to see Eve, Robin and the rest of the gang (not forgetting Gus!) back on the cozy mystery trail again and with a festive twist of course. We have a murder in a boatyard, enough suspects to keep the reader wondering until the end and of course a good dollop of festive cheer. Roll on number 16!

I have become a bit of a latecomer to this series by Clare Chase but I am fast becoming a big fan. Although this is actually book 15 in the series, it can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading them all so that you get a feel for the background of the characters and how Eve, an American originally, comes to live in a small English village. Cosy crime, a lovely (but murderous) village setting and a cute dog with an array of richly written characters always tick the boxes for me and Mystery at Mistletoe Place was the perfect thing to read on a cold November evening.

We haven't really heard too much about the boatyard in Saxford St Peter but it is quite famous having been around for a hundred years so when Viv's brother Simon, purchases a new sailboat, this is the perfect place to have it fixed! However, things take a turn for the worst when one of the owners of the boatyard, Anthony Mottram is found dead after a celebration at his family home, Mistletoe Place. As Eve and Viv were guests, they witnessed that there seem to be no end of suspects following some arguments at the party, just before Anthony stormed out to go back to the boatyard - but who would go this far?

In the run up to Christmas, most people are concerned with shopping but Eve is determined to get to the bottom of what really happened to Anthony and why his business partner seems to be acting very suspicious. With Eve an Obituary writer, she has the perfect cover for digging and 'interviewing' people that knew Anthony and with Eve's husband currently working undercover in London, Eve and Viv are left to try to solve the murder. As always with Clare's books, there is an abundance of characters and red herrings that I usually end up suspecting and then realising I have yet again been duped!

I really enjoy reading this series and think having Eve as a freelance Obituary Writer really adds another layer to the story - she is able to dig a little bit more into people's lives and find out what people really thought about a character and investigates without it seeming as though she is prying!

Another great addition to the series, I hope there are many more to come!

Eve Mallow is happy with her life in the village of Saxford St. Peter. She enjoys her career as an obituary writer but is content to augment her income by working at the cafe owned by her best friend, Viv. While Eve will never be the inspired baker that Viv is, she is invaluable in creating order out of the chaos that usually surrounds her impetuous friend. Eve is also very happy in her marriage to Robin, after her first marriage had ended in divorce. She is glad that Robin is enjoying his police work in London, but she worries about him, and misses him, especially as Christmas will soon be approaching.

In early November, Eve accompanies Viv, and Viv’s brother, Simon, and her son and daughter-in-law on an exciting local expedition. They visit Arthur’s Boatyard, a business that has been famous for repairing boats and barges for the past hundred years. They are going to collect the sailing boat that Simon has ordered, which has been restored at the boatyard. At the boatyard, Eve feels uncomfortable about the obvious tension between Anthony Mottram, the owner of the boatyard, and Anthony’s second-in-command, Hal Osborne. This is unusual, because the pair have been close friends since their childhood, and both of them are friends with Simon. Her doubts prove to be well founded when Simon takes his new boat out, with Viv’s son and daughter-in-law, Jonah and Stevie, as passengers. Eve and Viv and Eve’s dachshund, Gus, walk along the shore to watch Simon’s first voyage. They are alarmed to see Stevie bailing water out of the boat, and it seems possible that the boat is about to sink.

Simon’s swift action averts the disaster but the fault in a newly-restored vessel indicates that the problems at Arthur’s Boatyard are far more deep-seated than anybody had realised. In the next few days, rumours go round the village that an empty vodka bottle was discovered in a newly restored boat; Anthony claims it must be due to a casual worker, but Eve wonders if Hal or Anthony are responsible, which would account for the tension between them.

At the start of December, Eve, Viv, Simon and two of their friends attend a party at Mistletoe Place to celebrate the centenary of Arthur’s Boatyard. All the friends have assisted Eve in her investigations in the past, and Eve has primed Simon to push for an update on the fault in his boat. The friends plan to watch the interactions at the party in the hope of working out what is going on between Anthony and Hal. Mistletoe Place is the property of Hal’s uncle, Theo Osborne. Although Theo is a widower, whose only daughter has left home, Mistletoe Place also houses Hal’s father and stepmother. Eve is familiar with the house because Hal’s stepmother, Tabitha, is a successful interior designer, and Eve has visited Tabitha, in her capacity as a journalist, in order to research an article about the business. Eve likes and admires Tabitha, but she notices that she looks more anxious than is reasonable for a friendly, celebration party. It is obvious that there is a lot of bad feeling at the party, most of which is centred around Anthony. Eve overhears Hal begging Anthony not to sack him because his job is his ‘passport to freedom’; she also overhears a violent quarrel between Anthony and Theo Osborne, in which Osborne accuses Anthony of being behind somebody’s disappearance. Eve also encounters Anthony’s sister, Ada, who is gloating that things are going wrong for Anthony and Hal. Near the end of the party, when some guests are leaving, Tabitha asks Eve if she has seen Anthony because people wish to say goodbye to him. Eve wonders if he has taken refuge from the controversy surrounding him by going to the boatyard, and she and Viv walk down to see if they can locate him. Anthony is at Arthur’s Boatyard, but when Eve and Viv find him, he is dead, his head battered and bloody by a pipe wrench.

Once again Eve has an obituary to write and a murder to investigate. She commences a round of interviews and soon discovers that the Osborne and Mottram families have many secrets. There are clues to follow and alibis to probe, while Eve still has her everyday work to do, and preparations to make for Christmas and getting her cottage ready for her annual charity open evening. She is also concerned that Robin might not be home to share with her all of the joyous preparations for Christmas. Another murder occurs, but Eve continues to investigate, which results in a terrifying encounter when her own life is in grave peril.

Mystery at Mistletoe Place is the fifteenth book in the series featuring Eve Mallow and the people of Saxford St. Peter. It is an enjoyable addition to a series that continues to develop and grow, and is based in a warm, close-knit village community. It has an interesting plot, and engaging characters, whose relationships develop with each book. Murder at Mistletoe Place is an enjoyable read which I recommend.

This is the 15th book in the series featuring obituary writer Eve Mallow. And yes, you will have a better time with the story and its characters if you have read the previous books.
So, in this, her latest outing, Eve is the one who finds the body! That of local boatyard owner Anthony Mottram. Discovered during a party to celebrate the boatyard's centenary. It couldn't have come at a worse time for her to investigate though as Robin is away getting into his own danger and she also has her "open house" just around the corner. It also soon becomes apparent that it's not going to be a simple solution as it becomes more convoluted at every turn as it introduces even more suspects.
And then, just as she starts to think she's getting somewhere, there's another death...
I love this series which, even after 15 books, is still as fresh as book one. I'm a big fan of an amateur detective, and I still think having one who is also an obituary water is pure genius. And the stories, especially this one, always keep me guessing!
Eve has a plethora of Sidekicks as well as Gus her dachshund, and they all bring something different to the table. It's a shame that there's not so much Robin in this book but I guess if he was full-time helping Eve it'd take the shine off the amateur sleuth status.
There's secrets, lies, and duplicitous behaviour aplenty, along with a fair slice of dysfunctional family
behaviour, all of which kept me in the dark for the majority. Although I had the odd inkling, I was never close or sure enough to call so the ending, so when it came, it arrived along with a few surprises. And with relatively short chapters, no superfluous waffle or padding, and perfect pacing, the story flowed nicely and left me wholly satisfied at its conclusion.
All in all, another winner from this author, and a worthy addition to an already rather impressive back catalogue. Which is also well worth a look if you want to stuff your TBR.
My thanks go to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Murder at Mistletoe Place is another thrilling installment in Clare Chase’s captivating series, which never fails to deliver. Arthur’s Yard will soon be celebrating its centennial celebration. The festivities are barely underway when the owner of the boatyard is soon found murdered. The event proves stressful to Eve Mallow, journalist, obituary writer and an excellent amateur detective, as it doesn’t take long for her follow her intuition that the victim was a result of murder.

When it comes to writing obituaries, Eve liked to learn full histories of her subjects. As she begins digging deep into Arthur’s life, there are some things that just don’t add up. On the surface, Arthur seemed well-liked. But things just weren’t ringing true, as a gnarled web of secrets begin to unfold. This makes getting solid information about Arthur near to impossible for Eve.

Obituary aside, Eve makes it her aim to find out who is hiding what, and of course, who killed Arthur. With her characteristic flair, Clare Chase puts Eve in the driver’s seat, guiding her through a complex web of clues and revelations. Before long, pieces of a very complicated puzzle begin to fall into place. Eve may be missing her husband Robin as he is away, but her best friend Viv and her adorable dachshund Gus are right there by her side.

Can Eve solve Arthur’s murder, write a comprehensive obituary, and still find time to get ready for the holidays? We hope so, as Eve, Robin, and their friends deserve a relaxing holiday. In the meantime, readers eagerly anticipate the sixteenth book in the series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Mystery at Mistletoe Place by Clare Chase find us back with Eve Mallow, obituary writer and cafe worker. Her husband, Robin, is still in London working with the police so she settles happily for her village friends. They were watching as Viv’s brother, Simon, launched his new sailboat, his newest toy. Then all of a sudden something went wrong. It was the first sign of trouble ahead for Arthur’s Yard, a popular boat yard. It was not many days until the owner of the yard, Anthony Mottram was dead, murdered. As usual, Eve jumped in head first to solve this crime, but before she could turn around there was another murder. It was Eve’s prime suspect, Ada Mottram, Anthony’s sister.

The fun thing about this series is the personalities of the townsfolk, regulars in the series. Viv is her “boss” and her friend, and an interesting character with her ever changing hair colors and general flakiness. Another great character is local shopkeeper, Moira, who was a never-ending source of gossip. Also, Eve’s partner, Robin, who had been the village gardener for years until it was discovered that he was a police officer from London, in hiding from criminals that were looking to kill him. They are the ones, with their full personalities, which make this series so enjoyable. Chase has built a village and given it voice. The mystery was a good one, again highlighting the fact that family can be complicated. It is a mystery worth the read.

Clare Chase has once again delivered a delightful addition to her series with Mystery at Mistletoe Place. This book captures the charm and excitement that readers have come to expect, while offering a fresh mystery that keeps you turning the pages.
One of the greatest pleasures of this series is the chance to meet familiar characters again. They feel like old friends, and each new installment is a reunion that brings warmth and comfort. Their personalities continue to grow, and their interactions add depth and humor to the story. It is this sense of continuity that makes the series so engaging: you are not only following a mystery, but also sharing the journey of people you care about.
The plot itself is gripping and cleverly constructed. Chase knows how to build tension and curiosity, leading the reader into the classic syndrome of “just one more chapter.” The pacing is excellent, with twists that surprise but never feel forced. The atmosphere of Mistletoe Place adds a seasonal charm, making the mystery even more enjoyable.
What stands out is the balance between cozy familiarity and thrilling suspense. The writing is clear and accessible, perfect for readers who want a story that is both entertaining and easy to follow. Chase’s style invites you in and keeps you hooked until the very last page.
This novel is another strong entry in a consistently delightful series. It proves once again that Clare Chase knows how to combine character, setting, and mystery into a truly satisfying read.
Highly recommended.

Loved the mystery-did not connect with any of the characters. Let me preface that I have never read any of the previous 14 novels; perhaps if I had noticed that I may not have opted for the book. The mystery itself was top notch; the clues were there with red herrings and twists, so I enjoyed not being able to figure who did it. But I also want to be able to connect to the characters; half of them I couldn't describe. It was very distracting. Perhaps because this is #15, the author just assumes everyone reading knows the backstory and appearance of each character; but new readers like myself might be put-off. I had thought the murder victim was in his 50's until one character finally made the comment that he was only 32 and I still can't figure out what Eve looks like. But I did know every meal and drink the characters ordered and the name of every building they went to; why can't Eve just say she was going home instead of constantly referring to it as Elizabeth Cottage. I didn't feel the love between Eve and Robin, he could have easily been non-existent as he really doesn't move the story forward. Viv was annoying; even Eve says so. I guess I'm really a character driven reader and didn't see much development here. I know it's a cozy mystery; but unlike most cozy mysteries I read, the mystery was actually the highpoint (well thought out and intriguing) while the characters were disappointing.

While Robin is in London chasing criminals Eve is preparing for her winter fund-raiser open house.
The whole gang, minus Robin obviously, are attending the centenary celebration of the famous local boatyard. Soon Eve and her companions discover that there is a lot of tension at Mistletoe Place where the celebrations take place, culminating in Eve finding the body of the boatyards owner, murdered.
When Eve starts to look for the killer she does not want for suspects, although I must say that I find some of the theories she has for seeing suspects everywhere are somewhat more unlikely than in the previous books. I found this episode sometimes a bit confusing because of the unconvincing theories. The story gains momentum when a second victim falls, throwing Eve's theories in a twist. On the positive side I must say that the author managed to bring the sometimes confusing threads nicely together in the end to solve the mysterie.

With Robin in London Eve has to fall back more on Viv as a sounding board and even as a backup. Although Viv always brings a lot of colour to the story I hope that in the next book Robin will be permanently back from London. Luckily we see quite a bit of Gus, the adorable but sturdy dachshund.
I'm curious if some of the minor characters from this episode will become recurring sidekicks in future episodes.

My thanks go to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC they provided in exchange for my unbiased review.

Favorite Quote:

Eve could see the excited anticipation in Moira’s eyes. The storekeeper viewed first-hand gossip as a robin might view a juicy worm. It would make her the centre of attention for at least twenty-four hours if she could get Eve’s full account.

My Review:

This has been an enjoyable and well-plotted series with Ms. Chase’s devious mysteries growing in complexity with each new installment. She never fails to keep me guessing with my curiosity primed throughout perusal. Her main characters are likable, ethical, and authentically human as well as humane. And bonus points for including an adorable tartan-wearing weiner dog as a companion and sidekick.

In addition to my ever-growing admiration of Ms. Chase’s exceptional word skills, I have gained no less than three informal British expressions for my neglected Brit Words and Phrases List. First up is “chance her arm,” which Mr. Google notes is to undertake something even if it may be dangerous or unsuccessful. Next up is "took the biscuit" (or "takes the biscuit"), which seems exactly the same as our “takes the cake.” Meaning something at a mostly negative level that is beyond annoying or outrageous. And lastly, I chanced upon “led her a dance,” which means to deliberately cause someone to do a lot of unneccessary trouble and running around in circles.

Eve Mallow, a Saxford St Peter’s resident who divides her time between writing obituaries and baking for a tea room, has a new case. The night of a centenary anniversary celebration of local treasure Arthur’s Boatyard, the owner, Anthony Mottram, is found dead. As usual, Eve investigates the killing, hoping to learn more about Mottram for his obituary. She discovers that there are many suspects including his sister Ada who hated him; Dora, a former girlfriend and Hal, his friend and employee with a drinking problem. Then another murder makes Eve look in another direction - one that will prove dangerous.

Mystery at Mistletoe Place, 15th in this excellent series by the talented Clare Chase, is as fresh as the first. The mystery itself is well plotted as expected and has a totally surprising conclusion but the real strength in the Eve Mallow mysteries is the characters. Eve is resilient, independent and calm. Her foil and friend is the flighty but loyal Viv. Robin, her husband, is absent for most of this mystery but Eve’s love for him and worry over his job are well described. My favorite is Gus, the dachshund, who accompanies Eve whenever he can, handsome is his tartan coat. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Clare Chase for this ARC.

The fifteen book in the series & it’s easily read on its own but to fully appreciate it I’d recommend reading in order as the dynamics between the regular characters have evolved & deepened throughout the series. Another very well written cosy murder mystery with plenty of twists, turns & red herrings, there are a few suspects & the focus switches from one to another, I must admit I was left guessing until all was revealed. An engrossing mystery which I thoroughly enjoyed

"Mystery At Mistletoe Place" is book #15 in "An Eve Mallow Mystery" by Clare Chase.

The murder of a local boatyard owner stuns area residents just before Christmas. As Eve Mallow interviews those who knew him and does research into the various people who surrounded him, in order to write his obituary, she discovers secrets, lies, manipulation and betrayals amongst the group. A second murder complicates matters even more.

There were only a handful of people who could possibly have had reason to kill the man but narrowing it down proves almost impossible for Eve and her friends. Suspects who seemed to be cleared may not be as innocent as the evidence first indicated.

Viv does try to help in her own way - and she does mean well - but frankly she could easily drive a person crazy. Eve's husband Robin being in London on a dangerous case doesn't help her concentrate on the matter at hand either. Of course, she does eventually get there - just before a dangerous encounter with a killer!

As always, Ms. Chase has crafted a tightly interwoven story that keeps readers changing their minds as to who was responsible. A thoroughly enjoyable cozy mystery read.

A man is killed at a party and Eve suspects almost every family member and friend...!
Mystery at Mistletoe Place is the 15th book in the Eve Mallow series of cosy murder mysteries set in Suffolk.
Eve's friend Simon has bought a boat from Arthur's Boatyard but the first sail almost sinks! Something is amiss at the yard and the atmosphere is tense. At a party days later, the owner of the yard is found murdered and journalist Eve sets to work on his obituary and catching the killer.
There were a lot of characters and secrets in this book so Eve finds herself very busy! Relationships were at breaking point but did any of this create a motive for murder? Various clues were available but I had no idea who was responsible for the death. There was one character that readers will love to hate (no comment on their fate...)
Eve is assisted by her friends, neighbours and her beloved Gus the dachshund. Her husband Robin is away and she has the extra tension of worrying about him and the dangerous situation he is in which gives an extra layer to the plot.
Mystery at Mistletoe Place is an enjoyable murder mystery.

It took a while for me to get tucked into this book. There was not anything specific that accounted for that. The characters are interesting, although having not followed the series might have been the reason it took a while. A young man is bludgeoned to death on the eve of what should have been a night of celebration. Anthony, depending on to whom Eve spoke, was either a paragon and a great friend or a sleazoid who betrayed trusts. There is one particular person who seems to be the source of much vitriol and when she too is murdered, the prime suspect for the first murder is eliminated. Often with these mysteries, the reader gets some good suspicions about the most likely villains. It may have been what the author wanted but I never did get a solid feeling one way or the other. In fact, I found myself bouncing all over the place.

As I say, that might have been the intent but it distracted me in a way that prevented getting attached to the characters. It certainly had a good ending and it all made sense but I just didn’t get the glow I sometimes get when I am done a book. Four purrs and one paw up.

The story begins with the local boat yard hosting a party to celebrate 1oo years in business. But recently some customers are voicing dissatisfaction with the quality of work. Viv and Eve watched from shore as Simon tested his boat which had been in for repairs. It started taking on water almost immediately. Viv's brother, son and pregnant daughter-in-law's lives were endangered because someone neglected to double check the completed job. One of the boat yard owners was brutally murdered as the party was winding down. Eve and Viv discovered his body.
I had a difficult time keeping track of the characters relationships to one another in this book. There were two families who ran the boat yard. They seemed to be related in multiple ways. Their shared history meant they had grown up together and knew one another extremely well. Robin is back to work with London law enforcement people. He comes and goes. Eve is preparing for one of her holiday open house events at Elizabeth's Cottage. Viv is attempting some online dating.

Clare Chase’s Mystery at Mistletoe Place is a festive delight with a sharp edge of intrigue. Set in the charming village of Saxford St Peter, this cozy mystery wraps you in the glow of mince pies and carol singing—then swiftly reminds you that murder doesn’t take a holiday.

Eve Mallow, our ever-curious amateur sleuth, returns with her signature blend of intuition and charm, accompanied by her loyal dachshund Gus. When a local boatyard owner turns up dead, Eve dives into a sea of secrets, navigating tangled relationships and elusive clues with wit and warmth. The suspects are layered, the setting is atmospheric, and the mystery unfolds like a well-wrapped gift—full of surprises.

Chase’s writing is crisp and inviting, perfect for fans of classic whodunnits with a modern twist. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to light a fire, pour a mug of cocoa, and settle in for a satisfying sleuth.

Clare Chase delivers another cosy mystery with enough suspects and motives to keep any mystery fan happy. Eve Mallow discovers the body and together with her gang of friends is soon deep into investigating the death while gathering information for her obituary of the deceased.
I enjoyed the mystery and the cast of characters was an interesting one with a mixture of new and recurring characters. Sadly for me, this book reminded me of why I have only read a few in this series. The closeness between Eve and the local police force just seems too far-fetched for me. I love a good cosy crime novel and know that they aren’t always realistic but having local police who divulge every detail of their investigation to an amateur just feels wrong and stops me enjoying the story as much as I would like.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Mystery at Mistletoe Place by Clare Chase is a delightful cozy mystery that works beautifully as a standalone, even though it's the fifteenth book in the Eve Mallow Mystery series.

I received an ARC and hadn't read any of the previous books in the series, but I had no trouble jumping right in. Eve Mallow and her dachshund sidekick Gus are investigating the murder of Anthony Mottram, owner of Arthur's Boatyard, a century-old business in Saxford St Peter. Anthony is killed during the company's centenary celebration, and it quickly becomes clear he had plenty of enemies in the village. When a second murder occurs—the new owner of the boatyard—Eve knows the stakes have gotten much higher.

Chase does an excellent job with the atmosphere and setting. The mystery itself is well-plotted with plenty of suspects who all have reasons to lie. I enjoyed following Eve as she pieces together clues from a scarf, a scrap of paper, and the smell of perfume. The boatyard setting is unique and adds character to the story.

Gus the dachshund is an adorable addition without being too cutesy, and Eve is a likable, smart protagonist. The pacing is steady and the mystery kept me guessing until near the end. The cast of suspects—Anthony's sister, his ex-girlfriend, his business partner—all feel fully developed with believable motives.

My only minor complaint is that occasionally I felt like I was missing some backstory on certain characters, which is to be expected when jumping into book fifteen of a series. But it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the mystery itself.

A solid cozy mystery that has me curious about the rest of the series.

Christmas is coming soon and the annual open house Eve sponsors, but first there is the celebration of the local shipyard’s 100 year party and Robin off in London doing dangerous police work. Eve discovers the body in the shipyard office the night of the party and with the help of her friend, Viv, she begins investigating while gathering material to write the obituary. The victim didn’t seem to have enemies, but there are tangled motives which revolve around the members of two families. Eve discards theories as new evidence appears, and a second murder adds to the confusion. Realizing who the killer is could be dangerous, however.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery and the characters in the story. I’ve only read one other in this series, but soon caught on to the personalities involved.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.

Eve Mallow is back again, this time to solve the murder of a boatyard owner - while interviewing people for his obituary, as always. It's her 15th sleuthing adventure, and following her investigations (often along with her funny friend Viv and her cute dog Gus) is still as entertaining as ever.
New readers could easily enjoy this book too, and it wouldn't spoil the ending of any of the others but would reveal the secret of one suspect from the first (and what's changed in Eve's personal life in the meantime), so I still recommend to start with Mystery on Hidden Lane unless you really don't mind partial spoilers.

I received an advance copy of this book from Bookouture on NetGalley. Thank you!

Arthur’s Boatyard is a proud fixture of this village, having been around for decades. The owner however has been at odds with many people and when his brutally murdered body is discovered, there are many suspects and Eva Mallow has to tread carefully not to disclose her suspicions. The plot thickens when his own family and dear friends forms part of the initial group of suspects.

Most of the suspects seem to have strong alibis, but when of them the first victims own sister is found strangled and drowned Eva’s calculations are thrown into disarray and she has to go over all her initial timelines and motives for the murders.

Plenty of characters, a complicated murder trail and lots of twists abd turns.

Arthur’s Boatyard, a renowned firm in Saxford St Peter celebrating its centenary, becomes the center of a murder investigation when owner Anthony Mottram is found dead in his workshop. Eve Mallow, accompanied by her dachshund Gus, seeks to uncover the truth amid village tensions and mysteries surrounding Anthony’s family and friends. With limited clues, Eve faces numerous suspects and a subsequent murder that heightens the stakes. She must navigate these challenges to identify the killer before she becomes the next victim.
An enjoyable cozy mystery with plenty of twists and a plethora of characters with motives to be the killer. Just my sort of winter reading.

Eve Mallow and friends are ought to solve the murder of a local boatbuilder. Who is responsbile for the death of a young man liked by so many in the community? Or was this young man hiding secrets that lead to his death. The death occurs at a Christmas gathering and Eve is on the hunt immediately. Her job of writing obits for the locals means that people open up to her with information that they would not share with others. If you like an old-fashioned type of mystery, where clues can take you on or off the trail, this is for you.

Arthur's Boatyard will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. The festivities are on their way, when Anthony Mottram, the owner, is found dead. As Eve begins to look into Anthony's life for his obituary, she begins to notice that some things don't add up.

First time reading this series and I adore Eve. Viv and Gus were amazing side characters that helped push Eve along. I loved this book and its characters so much. I will be grabbing more books from this series.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

I've read many other books by Chase, just not from the Eve Mallow Mystery series. As it's the fifteenth in the series I guess I'm on catch up for the foreseeable.

It's a great little cosy mystery that takes place over the festive period in Arthur's Boatyard where the celebrations are in swing for the club's centenary.

Mallow was such a great character, so easy to emotionally invest in, and her little doxie Gus such a cutie.

I did try and solve the mystery myself...I didn't get it right, but had so much fun in trying!

Interesting and Intriguing!

This is such a wonderful, entertaining series. Eve and her faithful canine companion Gus always make for an interesting plot. Presented with another puzzling mystery surrounding a manipulative individual, Eve and her sleuthing partner Vi are caught in the middle of plots, lies, half-truths, and conniving individuals from two families whose lives and business relationships are intertwined. Following along with them as they unravel motives and put together clues is always quite an intriguing read.
