Shailendra is the pole star of the world of songwriting in those golden years of Hindi Film Music. Those timeless classics like Shree 420, Madhumati, Kala Bazar, Guide, Bandini and many more would have been not the same without the contribution of this wordsmith. No matter how high technology climbs, no matter how much artificial intelligence interferes with song creation, no matter how many digital acrobatics become possible, whenever songs deeply rooted in script and lost in poetic detail are mentioned, Shailendra's songs will always shine a light and grace us hope.
Yunus Khan's book is an honest and fine attempt with the right intentions. It's indeed a well written book published at the apt centenary year of Shailendra. The book is neither a biography or a memoir! It's a book analysing and appreciating the craft and art of writing hindi film lyrics with limitations of a particular film situation or character's internal feeling that befitting to a scenario, tune, melody and yet finally ending with connecting with the audience. The writer deeply and honestly analysed the songs from the key films of Shailendra's career in various chapters.
Along the journey of around 270 pages, it introduced to readers some interesting anecdotes of Shailendra's life. The source and reference in many cases is missing though! In the thanks note, the author mentioned people who helped him with the information but it would be better if he would have shared the references of sources or bibliography. I have not read another english book published by Shailendra's daughter but this book is surely a fine tribute piece acknowledging the immense and unforgettable contribution of him as an artist and master lyrics writer of Hindi cinema.
Worth a read.
