Henry Bins hasn't seen his mother in thirty years. She walked out when he was six and never looked back. Five years ago, Henry started looking for her. Now she’s been found. At the bottom of the Potomac River. Henry soon learns everything he thought he knew about his mother was a lie. And that maybe his condition wasn't the reason his mother left all those years ago. Because Sally Bins wasn't your average woman. She was a spy.
Nick Pirog is the bestselling author of the Thomas Prescott series, the 3:00 a.m. series, and The Speed of Souls. He lives in South Lake Tahoe with his other half, Stephy, and their pup, Potter.
I was intrigued by the first book in this series, despite the odd premise, and gave it a try. Much to my delight, it was suspenseful and original and humorous, overall a decent read, as long as I engaged suspension of disbelief. So I tried this, the second book, but what a huge disappointment! Rather than the quirky wit of the first book, this was just plain stupid. The talking to his cat went from a fun bit of silliness to an annoying and disturbing aspect of the book, getting downright ridiculous when he could actually understand the meowing as real conversation and was able to get the cat (and dog) to do things through verbal commands they had not previously heard (I won't spoil it, but it was ludicrous what happened). This one wasn't as suspenseful as, and had less action than, the prior book in the series. The book was only 100 pages or so, which would have been a drawback had it not been so bad I was praying for the end to come. My advice: don't bother.
Well, I sat down to start this and just kept reading until the end. I had many other things that I should have been doing, but I just could not put this book down! I read it straight of the back of the last book, and it just keeps getting better. Oh, and Lassie, and the interactions with Henry, just make my day! Straight on to the next one...
Picking up with Henry Bins, ten minutes into his one hour long day, we find that the detective agency he hired to find his mother, who had abandoned the family when Bins was a child, have found her body in the river. Lies, deception, intrigue, spies, mind control, and more propel this thriller and its sequel. Could Henry's condition have been a mind control experiment gone horribly right? Could it be that his own mother had done this to him? And can a man who is only awake for one hour every 24 still find love and make a family? Read and find out!
This was a fun little short story. The idea behind it is a stretch from reality, but the author pulls it off in a way that makes it almost believable. Can you imagine a life where you're only awake for one hour each day, and it's in the middle of the night? For a very restrictive plot, Pirog doesn't disappoint. His name will soon be synonymous with authors like Crichton. Great job!
I love these little 100 page thrillers! I also love his unique position. Only awake one hour a day? Insanity. Especially at 3am, haha. I love that he struggles to keep up with Game of Thrones because he only watches 20 minutes a day, as to not waste his whole precious hour. Anyways, I suggest all of these, the new one comes out before Christmas!
Second book — novella — in the Henry Bins series and I enjoyed it. I would recommend this series to people who are not fond of reading full-length novels but are looking for drama and comedy. Thank you, Nick Pirog, for creating Henry Bins!
The author puts himself in a box (a main character who is only awake from 3am-4am) and is still able to pull off and exciting thriller that is witty, fun and engaging.
