This review is primarily for Extraction, the third book in the series but will cover all of them. I'll start out by writing that I really enjoyed these books, a lot more than I expected. I never read paranormal/shape shifter books. Ever. I didn't realize that these books were in that genre or I probably wouldn't have read them. I enjoy reading military m/m stories and the whole hazing/initiation angle piqued my interest and tickled my kinks. That being said, I got sucked into the story before I realized the shape shifter aspect.

Good points: The characters. They have stuck in my mind after I finished the book and that doesn't always happen. I would have liked more background on more of them to see them as rounded and fully developed, though. The plots were interesting and the pace kept moving.

The initiation idea hits my kinks, even more so that it's a military setting. Very good point.

I don't read shape shifter/paranormal stories but to me this was nicely done and seemed believable.

Neutral points: Sex was well-written but could have used a bit more heat. I wanted to be right there with the boys but didn't always feel like I was. I was/am hoping to see more of the kink between Oh and El. Show me more of the wolves and how they look/feel. Again, put me right there, touching and seeing them.

Areas that feel short: Plot holes. Many of them, primarily the whole question of whether Brian will/won't bottom for Markus. Hey, I love UST as much as the next reader. It keeps us on edge and makes the anticipation so much better. But across three books with no resolution is a huge letdown. Don't build up that anticipation unless you plan to make good on it at some point. And the end of three books is about the limit. Maybe this will be handled in the next book (is there one forthcoming?) but I found it frustrating. Not that I read book just for sex but that aspect was touted as being the epitome of bonding/claiming and the slow degradation of Brian's resistance was great to read. And then...nothing.

Duke...this creature was interesting but I'd like to see that developed more. Show us more of his interactions with the Mad Dogs, maybe in a flashback. Show us his tryst with one of the Mad Dogs and how it came to happen.

The Order/Organization. This was confusing, probably because the similarity in the names. I'd like to see more explanation of what they represent and why. Give us a framework for understanding the issues the Mad Dogs confront.

The author opens a lot of doors and then leaves them open. I would rather see most of them closed and new ones opened, if you want to keep readers satisfied yet yearning for more.

Another disappointing aspect: Lack of editing! I can overlook the occasional mistake but sometimes I had to stop and reread whole passages to figure out what they author meant to say. In some cases, I think the sentence was missing a word that would have changed the whole meaning of the passage. I only write fanfiction for fun but anything I post for my readers goes through at least 2, and sometimes 3 or 4 sets of eyes before it goes live. If you don't have a publisher who can do this, find a friend with good grammar skills and attention to detail to proofread.

Summary: while I think the overall stories are a solid 4, I have to take this one down to a 3 because my expectations for the resolution of some ongoing issues was not fulfilled. Perhaps the next book (and I hope there is one coming) will resolve this.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

4.75 Stars

There is trouble and a little deceit in the air as we meet up with the Mad Dog team again. It would seem that Markus being able to take on a third form, the first Mad Dog to do this in over 100 years, has caused a stir within the company and not everyone is to be trusted.

After what is supposed to b a regular debrief and a meeting with the council members following their last mission it becomes quickly apparent that there is something is wrong when two of the Mad Dogs are missing. Markus and Brian have been snatched away and nobody seems to have the answer as to why even after they have worked out by whom.

Their next mission is thrust upon them and it is to save two of their own. Once again the mysterious Duke makes an appearance and is definitely working outside of his parameters of being impartial by informing the team of where their missing members are being held.

Markus and Brian have no idea where they are being held or why but the situation is not looking good for them. Through their telepathic bond they help each other stay strong as their captors try to torment and torture them. Their sanity and their lives now depend on the rest of the team.

The rescue attempt leaves many unanswered questions which I am hoping means there are going to be further books in the series. I have really enjoyed the first three books and I am excited to see what the Mad Dogs face next.

I love this series. It has been a while since I read the first two books. I wasn't sure if I would be able to jump back in, but I really didn't have a problem. The only thing that tripped me up a bit was the squad's nicknames. It took me a few pages to figure out who was who again. I hadn't forgotten the storyline up to this point though.

This book split the Mad Dogs up a bit. You have two captured and the others trying to find them. You also find out a bit more about the commander and the council. I loved that this book separated the squad but was still able to show how strong the bonds are for the members. I really love the basis for how the squad is with each other and how they form a close pack.

This series keeps getting better the more I read. It adds new characters and challenges constantly. I love the action and the bit of romance. I like that there are mates and then there is the main pack dynamic. It all intertwines. I also love their version of training. Everything came together to give me something to read that I had a hard time putting down. I can't wait to start the next book.

Alright story, different take on the central subject matter. Unfortunately the author hasn’t bothered to employ a professional proofreader or simply hit spell and grammar check. Too many mistakes in spelling, past and present tense, plurals and singular and just plain old misused words. Would it really be so bad to pick up a dictionary on occasion? A ‘breech’ is not the same as a ‘breach’. Ffs.

Ok so this addition get a little better. The plot is a bit stronger. We get a little more of a story and learn some more about the characters. It’s still a bit hard to connect to it but it’s at least heading in the right direction.

4.5 star review by Dan

The team is back from Switzerland and recovering from their ordeal by doing some training in the woods of North Carolina. At a remote location, Brian and the rest of the guys are doing some intense training. Too intense for a normal human. Because Brian is still “converting” as it were, he is more exhausted than the rest of the team.

Now it is time for him to meet the representatives of the council. One, Rolex, is a former Mad Dog, and of course still a werewolf, the other is this total bitch named Shanna who despises the werewolves and doesn’t understand why they are part of the Order forces at all.

During the interview with the council, both Brian and Marcus are interviewed by both Rolex and Shanna. Because of the third form that Marcus displayed in book two, the council is very interested in learning what the limits are of that new form.

Before anyone knows what is going on, Shanna has drugged both men and smuggled them out of the training facility and away to a hidden, undisclosed area. This is not something the rest of the team, including Rolex and McCormick knew anything about.

The race is on to find the two men, before the evil Shanna can injure them permanently, or even kill them. Along the way we run into Duke, the inquisitive vampire from book 2, as well as a particularly stinky female necromancer. Will the team get there to rescue the guys before Shanna does more than just torture them? What about this shadowy “Organization” which we don’t know much about, but who are the other side? (I’m thinking of the Chaos/Control relationship on the old television show “Get Smart”, and showing my age…LOL)

I would like to first thank the author for allow me to be a beta reader for this book. I absolutely love the Mad Dogs series.

Here is what I felt about the book.

Characters: 4
As each book progresses we learn more about the Mad Dogs and how they function, not only as a unit, but as individuals and as couples. Watching the layers around Brian being peeled aways as more of his personality, emotions and beliefs emerge has been a rewarding experience so far and one I want to continue to enjoy throughout however many more books Mrs. Cothern decides to put in this series.

Plot: 4
I hate to use a cliche here but the "plot thickens" in this book. We finally get to see and learn more about the two main powerhouses in the supernatural community as some of their motives get revealed and it does not all look like roses for the Mad Dogs.

Flow: 4
Cothern's flow is good as always and there is not much more I can say that I have not already said before about it.

Believability: 4
This is always a big one for me and one that Cothern does effortlessly. The moment that this fails (which I doubt she ever will) shall be the moment I stop reading this series.

Sexual Tension: 5
This was taken up another level and I liked it but I did have a couple of times when it drove me bonkers. I mean, I feel like we have been stuck in one long foreplay moment and I would like something to finally give.

Romance: 3
Because of the nature of the storyline and what was actually happening in this book, there was not as much "romance" as the first two but the romantic love between Brian and Markus is still going strong.

I can say that this book kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next! It seemed like the pages couldn’t turn quick enough on my kindle because I just had to find out what was going to happen.

After already being invested in this series, the fact that Markus and Brian are taken, it destroyed me and I was almost in tears while reading — hoping that the other Mad Dogs could get to them and save them.

This is a true series and so it must be read in order, but it is totally worth it in my opinion.

There were so many twists and turns in this book that will keep you wondering, and interested, and trying to figure out who exactly is on the side of the Mad Dogs, and who is against them.

I knew better than to read the summary for the books in this series but i was so excited to read the 3rd book that I read the summary anyways and talk about a mood killer, I mean one moment I'm so freaking excited to read this book then I read the summary and suddenly all my excitedness is gone and I have to keep reminding myself how I know I'll really like this book so I need to read this book despite the horrible summary. And I was so right I LOVED this book, I swear each book I read in this series is better than the last. I just wish the summaries didn't suck so much. I bet if the summaries actually reflected how amazing the Mad Dog books are then it'd be really popular.

I really enjoyed this book and the character development. The sex was just enough to keep it hot and steamy and the action played out like an awesome movie. I have read Ms. Cothern's books before and like the ones I've read in the past, this book leaves you looking forward to the next one. If you still have any doubts about reading this book, I leave you with this final thought... this is a book about gay werewolves in special forces that are eager to fight and have raw animal sex.

As a fan of not just the Mad Dog series, but also Brenda Cothern's books, I love this story. We meet some members of the Council, get more of my favorite non-Mad Dog Duke, and find them on another adventure. However, the difference is they need to rescue some of their own. Follow all of the Mad Dogs on their latest adventure, and fall in love with them more.

Extraction #3

This series keeps getting better and better with each book. M and B got kidnapped by a council member and she found out some information by watching them but the team with the help of the watcher found them and they were rescued. I can not wait for the next book in this series. Erin

Great story

This book continued a great series. Once again, I was impressed with the world of the Mad Dogs. The editing was better in this book than the previous two. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
