JT McDonald has been looking forward to his first Christmas Break Hockey Camp for months. And now that school's finally out, he's ready to spend a solid week learning from a pro - Danny Holbrook of the Vancouver Canucks! But because Mom was late signing him up, instead of working with his NHL hero, JT will be training on another team. The good the coach is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. The bad Coach won her medals in women's hockey. JT is positive his team could never beat Danny Holbrook's in the game at the end of the week. But with Coach Katie Gunnar at the helm, JT and his friends are headed for a big attitude adjustment. Original Breakaway
MC was quite a bit whiny for my taste and I almost put the book dwn. The redemption came through so well though. Well done. I feel a bit excited and less frightened to play hockey one day
I still cannot believe how much I love this series. Like, I don't like ice hockey at all unless I play it myself and well, the book is about a young boy playing the game in Canada no less and dammit, it's so good. In this third part Nugget gets to go to an ice hockey camp, but ends up in a different team than his friends and his coach is a girl no less. The other team's coach is a former NHL player and this makes Nugget jealous and he shows it until things change. The structure of the book is quite similar to the former parts, as in Nugget needs to experience something he's not comfortable with, but soon learns that that's not necessarily a bad thing. I really like this approach and Nugget is a very credible kid too, which is probably the reason why I enjoy this so much. The humor is good and the characters have personas and they evolve throughout the series, which is awesome. Because of this it's a good idea to read the series in order, since former happenings are mentioned.
Mack is an awesome writer, really. The flow of the text is perfect and Nugget's inner voice is wonderful. The book goes through important topics in a way that it doesn't feel like you need to learn something from them - the subtle approach is perfect. The translation is great too and there's this distinct feel to the story, which makes this entertaining. The story is coherent and not just about ice hockey, which works out well. Mack's style is multidimensional and hardly ever have I read such a great book for kids. The reality value is top notch and the readers aren't taken for granted. I wish more writers would do it like this - especially YA writers.
