Time Eternal

Alternate-cover with Lily Morgan's name can be found here.

Time Eternal is the story of Skyla Gray, a TSCAA agent in the present day, and Rei Dusan, the crown prince of the sixteenth-century Serbian Empire, who has traded his soul to the gods so he can travel through time to find his one true love, Elizabeth Magini.

The story opens with Agent Gray time-ported to an underground bank vault. Her mission is to retrieve a device, but someone else has gotten there first. More maddening is that she recognizes this man’s voice even though she cannot remember ever having met him before. Sent back to the present day by this stranger, she finds the life she knew slowly beginning to unravel... and learns that the stranger is not the only one who has been looking for her these past five centuries.

At the Last Battle, Rei Dusan lay dying alongside his father, his brothers, and his countrymen, when a handmaiden from the gods offered him a bargain: his soul and his eternal pledge to do the gods’ bidding in exchange for immortality. With his life, he will avenge his family, his country, and his beloved Elizabeth, who sacrificed her life to save his. He accepted the bargain with the gods only to later discover Elizabeth did not perish in the fire.

Will Skyla remember who she really is? What Rei meant to her - to Elizabeth? Will she accept Rei in her present life, where she is no longer a helpless young girl needing rescue from an evil Medici lord, but an ass-kicking agent fighting terrorists for a living? And how will Rei answer to the gods when they find out he has defied their orders? Will there be a happily ever after for Rei and Skyla?

Time Eternal is the first book of the Time series, which tells the story of the men and women who are part of a secret government agency, fighting not garden-variety terrorists but the gods and their enemies, who are facing off in a final showdown. Should their wars not be contained, the world will go up in flames - literally.

Lily has spent her entire adult life working for several Fortune 500 companies, but has always dreamed about being a writer. Her first encounter with “Anna Karenina” in college was love at first read. Throughout her corporate career, Lily never truly let go of that first love and eventually garnered enough courage to try her hand at writing. And it was the most amazing and fun experience she’s had in a long, long while. As any happily-ever-after story should go, the rest is history.

Title: Time Eternal
Author: Lily Morgan
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age: Adult
Is This Part of a Series?: Yes (Time Series--Book One)

*I received an electronic copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

Summary:
Skyla is a highly-trained member of a secret government agency involved in time travel missions meant to keep the world from falling out of balance and into World War III. Her carefully ordered life falls into chaos, however, when she meets a mysterious man while on a mission. Her body reacts as if she knows the man, but she has no memory of him. To make matters more confusing, he "pushes" her back to her time--without the use of the time machine! When he later shows up inside the secret, highly-guarded government facility, what she knows of her life begins to fall into question. Why is this man interested in her? Who is he? More importantly, who is she?

Overall Impressions:
I found myself enjoying this book, although it was sometimes difficult to know why (due to a few elements of the book that I found distracting). The premise is great, the characters are fun, and when it comes right down to it, I kept going back to read more.

The Nitty Gritty:
As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, there were some (for me) distracting elements to this book. First and foremost was Ms. Morgan's tendency to over describe thoughts and emotions. Don't get me wrong, I do want to know what characters are thinking and feeling, but I don't necessarily want to be told all of it. Tell me some, when it makes sense to. Show me some--maybe even a lot. And occasionally leave a little bit of mystery there too, to help build tension and make the surprises bigger. This was especially noticeable in the first half or so of the book, when the action was a bit slower and there was more time to share character thoughts. I would like to point out to positive things here: first, this "over" description came in handy in describing the landscape of the book--the scenery and furnishings and costuming, so to speak. Secondly, this desire to let us know so much about Ms. Morgan's thoughts led her to switching point of view characters to those most able to share the appropriate information. It was never constrained by the fact that the character wasn't the main character. That is a technique that I, personally, enjoy. The story should always be told by the person best suited to tell it, even if that changes from one chapter to the next.

Secondly, there were a several times that the wrong word was used in a story simply (I believe) because of a typo that resulted in a correctly spelled word (which therefore was not caught by spell check) or by a switch in approach mid-sentence (resulting in words like he and his being switched around). In a related issue, there were some word choices that I just plain felt did not fit. Some of the time there were too many words, slowing down the scene at an inappropriate time. Several times there were words that were technically right but didn't seem to fit with the voice of the character, resulting in a jarring sensation that pushed me out of the story somewhat. And a couple of times there were words that gave details I did not feel were truly necessary--like mentioning that Skyla pulled out her Glock. There was a sentence early on mentioning how weapons needed to be time-appropriate and, in fact, another one later where there was a discussion on how they would not even work if the material components and technology to make them did not exist in the time period being traveled to. These two details combined to make me stop every time technology was mentioned and think about what time period they were in, whether or not the weaponry was appropriate for that time, etc. I don't want to stop and think--essentially doubting the author--when I am reading. I want the world to be obviously cohesive and consistent, my author to know what he or she is talking about, and the characters to know that they can do X but not Y. I am not saying that anything that Ms. Morgan wrote was wrong--but, I was wondering about it, rather than just sinking into the book and flipping pages as furiously as I could. And all of that thinking could have been stopped by the omission of certain details. Omission can be as important as inclusion, sometimes.

As for the good...it was easy to get on board with Skyla, Rei, Knox, and the others. The antagonists were creepy, slimy, and powerful--and at least one of them was well-hidden for a good portion of the book. The idea of the TSCAA (the time-traveling government agency Skyla works for) is intriguing and fun, and I really like the premise that the time machine was invented during the 1500s, but due to a mishap was lost until present day. I also like the ideas Ms. Morgan plays with when discussing which events the TSCAA and Mr. X have been "fighting" over--some are big moments in history that are easy to imagine as history-altering. Some are smaller. Growing up on shows like Sliders, this is a concept that appeals to me. As a romance, there are sex scenes involved--both on and off screen--and I believe these were well done, with probably some of the best writing (for my tastes) in the whole book, with just the right amount of information, consistent and appropriate pacing, and a balance of sparks and character (and plot) development.

My Rating: 3 Stars
This was a tough one for me to rate. There was such a pull between things I liked and things that distracted me. What it finally boiled down to, though, was the idea that I did keep going back to the book. The premise and characters are a 4 or 5 star crew. I finished it. I would like to read at least one more book to see where the series and Ms. Morgan's balance-in-writing go from here. But the distractions, well, distracted me. A lot. It kept me at the surface of the book rather than allowing me to really sink into it. Still while the typo/editing type errors are not a personal opinion type of issue, most of the other negatives are more of a personal pet peeve and, I believe, difference in stylistic approach than a strictly good or bad approach to the writing craft. So. I liked it a fair amount, but it felt rough around the edges.

Great first novel by Lily Morgan. I couldn't stop reading it. When Skyla Gray is sent on her latest mission with the TSCAA, she meets Rei Dusan, someone that she gets an immediate sense for. She recognizes his voice, but has no clue who he is. Rei knew her immediately. She is the one. The woman she has been searching centuries for. His love, only problem, Skyla doesn't even know who he is. When he reveals the truth, she is shocked. Can she overcome everything she has gone through and fall back in love with the man she loved centuries ago. Is there love really one for the ages?

Do you love action stories with romance? This story has it all, time travel, secret government agencies, gods and goddesses, romance. This series is nothing like I have read before and can't wait to read the second book.

The reason for the 4 out of 5 stars is because of spelling/grammatical errors. There isn't an overwhelming amount present, but for me it stands out and is a little more than a distraction.

I can't wait to read the next book.

Skyla Gray is an agent who works for a very secret government agency the TSCCA . They travel back in time to stop events that could cause major disruption or terrorist attacks in today's world. She is a kick ass heroine with a secret she knows nothing about.
Rei Dusan sold his soul to the gods in the sixteenth century. He must do their bidding while he travels through time to find his one and only love. She is lost somewhere in the future.
The agency has been finding proof that someone else is able to travel in time and is causing all sorts of conflicts. Nobody who has seen this other traveler can remember what he looks like.
This is the start of quite a complicated series. What with the skipping about to different years and so many of the characters have big secrets. Behind it all is an obsessive love that has lasted almost five hundred years. You will have to concentrate while reading this, but it's well worth it. I will be reading the next book very soon.

Eternal is book one in the time series. It is also a standalone as I believe all the other books in this series will be too. So this book is set in the past from the future then back to the past. Sounds complicated but it isn’t so bad once you start reading and you understand all that is going on in the story.
It’s a good story line with a great writing style and it will keep you wanting to read more however for me it was a little predictable so it turned more into wanting to read to see if I was right or not. The characters are brilliant and the author did an amazing job of defining the characters from past and present and also the ones that were slightly in between.
The story is quite long and due to it being a standalone is great for in between books.

Time travel, romance, star crossed lovers, action, God's, and 15th century to the present

Elizabeth found her Prince only to have him taken away. To get away from a lecherous villain who plans to marry her at best this 16 year-old steals away in her uncles untested time machine. Rei and his brother Sloan the only surviving sons of the king make a deal on the battlefield before they die to be mercenary for the Gods with the hope of catching up with Elizabeth. Memorable storyline with well-developed characterization is a must read. For adult readers due to sexual and violent content.

Interesting read that is action packed! This book is Skyla and Rei's story. Skyla, a kick-ass agent and Rei, a crown prince of the sixteenth-century Serbian Empire who have sold his soul to the gods to find his true love (Elizabeth). When he crossed paths with Skyla, he knows that she's the one he has been searching for. But the woman she found is not he same one from the one he knew. What I love about this book is that it's full of surprises and the characters will definitely get you hooked! Loved it!

I was somewhat skeptical when I read that time traveling was involved. But that quickly faded away. I enjoyed this book. I has everything you look for in a good romance. Torn apart by time, a love triangle, deceit, betrayal, loyalty, and faithfulness, mysterious characters, and the build up of the hero and heroine was great. Very enjoyable read. I recommend this to anyone who loves romance.
