Rosa thinks she's found the perfect man to introduce her to the delights of the flesh – the sexy star of her stepbrother Roberto’s latest film. But when she arranges a moonlit assignation, little does she realise it is Roberto himself who keeps it.
Roberto might be a world famous movie director with ‘the world at his feet’, but he can’t seem to get Rosa to show the slightest bit of interest in him as a man. Yet even though she doesn’t seem to want him, he can’t bear the thought of anyone else having her. And so he does the unthinkable, substituting himself for her boyfriend on the night of their tryst. He may have wanted her for as long as he can remember, but will she ever forgive him?
Set in England, this book takes the characters on a journey through love, lust and mistaken identity, and through the gorgeous landscapes of Northern Italy to the timeless beauty of Oxford.
Emily Arden is fascinated by people and their relationships, and loves exploring stories both old and new about the search for love and happiness. She has been writing since university: first poetry and history, then more recently music and novels.
It is the stories about love and human relationships that she enjoys creating the most, and she is currently publishing her first series of romantic novels ‘Deception’ (Sexy Contemporary, 15+). She is also writing a series of historical romances set during the French Revolution (The French Connection) and a novel about a somewhat different form of time travel (The mirror of time).
Emily writes about the sorts of characters and stories that she likes to read about. She likes passionate heroines who believe in themselves and their right to a great match. She likes men with a blend of strength and caring - not too hard and tough, not too rich and unrealistic. Just real men. She likes her characters to be nuanced, and capable of change and adaptation. They should not expect to have everything their own way, as the best relationships involve compromise. But the important thing is that they love each other enough to be prepared to take risks and make it work.
Lover by Moonlight is an engaging erotic romance that takes the reader on a whirlwind of emotions, set against an idyllic backdrop of Oxford, the English countryside and Verona.
The story is essentially the sexual awakening of twenty year old Rosa as she falls in love for the first time. Complications arise as the object of her desire is her step brother, Roberto. Although her feelings are returned, Roberto embarks upon the subterfuge of pretending to be someone else, in order to make love to Rosa thus setting in motion a complex chain of events.
In Rosa, Emily Arden has constructed a realistic young woman, who is studying at Oxford and desperate to spread her wings and experience more of life. She is on the cusp between girl and woman and Arden very effectively illustrates all of the confusing feelings that are part and parcel of that time.
The story is told to us from the perspective of both Rosa and Roberto, so we are able to see how each of them is trying to avoid what they are feeling. As they hide behind pretences and, other characters such as heart throb actor, Aaron Forsythe and Italian beauty Lysabella are drawn into their midst to cloud issues even further, Arden successfully builds the tension that adds an extra spark to the story.
Arden also creates the perfect backdrop to her story as the setting changes from Oxford to Rosa’s family home in the countryside and Roberto’s villa in Verona. The descriptions of Italy are particularly sumptuous and the reader can almost experience the warmth of the sun and the wonderful food that intensifies the romance being played out between Rosa and Roberto. The skill with which Arden employs descriptive language is also evident in the sex scenes, which are neither smutty nor gratuitous.
I think in Rosa, Arden creates a convincing and likeable character. She is a naive girl and I particular liked her friendships with Sara and the more flighty Tamsin. I have to confess though that I had more trouble liking Roberto, partly because of the way he manipulates Rosa. In fairness, he tortures himself over his behaviour but I found it hard to forgive him. I also had slight issues about the fact that at 34, he’s a lot older than Rosa and has in fact been her step brother since she was three.
Arden goes to great pains, however, to show that the relationship is equal and both characters have been attracted to each other long before their sexual liaison. In fact, even though Rosa thinks she is having sex with someone else, she is fantasising that it is Roberto so maybe I am being over-sensitive.
The lovely Italian backdrop makes this book the perfect choice for a summer read and, if you like romance with a hint of erotica, then I think this could be just the book for you.
I read two great romances this week - both very different. Kinsella's 'Wedding night' was fun, light and LOL hilarious (probably more 'chick-lit' than romance). Arden's 'Lover by Moonlight' is a more serious romance with plenty of sex scenes and lots of delving into the inner world of the two main characters. (Don't read this one if you like your romance light and funny).
Rosa, a student in Oxford England, is keen to finally dispose of her virginity and arranges a moonlight tryst with a gorgeous young actor ('Romeo'). But her stepbrother Roberto overhears the call and is determined to stop the assignation. He's been in love with Rosa for years, but it takes a while for her to realise how he feels, and just who she really met in the garden-house that night. Meanwhile they take a trip to Italy to get to know each other better ('Tis true I'm a sucker for stories set in Italy, not to mention stories about step-siblings finding romance).
When I finished this story I wanted to (a) go on a trip to Italy, preferably next week (b) see Roberto's film 'Afterlove' (although sadly it seems to be a figment) and (c) find out what some of the secondary characters get up to in the next book in the series.
'Lover by moonlight' contains sex scenes and adult themes, so don't read it if you prefer your romances sweet. It's a story about Roberto, who steps in to save his stepsister Rosa from throwing herself away on a creep. Yet does he go too far? And was it fair of him to deceive her so badly? His redeeming quality is that he's loved her for years, a love which dares much and risks everything.
