Apparently, Yamamoto Kotetsuko-sensei is my confort mangaka ‘cause I feel so light-hearted after finishing her mangas.

Bokura no Negai tells us the story of 4 brothers who’ll have to rely on each other after tragic events in their short lives. Kento, Hayato and Masato are blood-related brothers but they couldn’t leave Ryou out of the picture, so even when things got tough, they supported each other the best way they could.

Thing is, I loved their family dynamic. I loved how they cared for each other and the business their passing mother had. I like how different all they are –but somehow, they fit perfectly.

Thought, I wish they were older because there’s a huge age gap between their romantic interests which made me quite uncomfortable (we’re talking about minors in love with adults and vice versa).

If you’ve read anything by Kotetsuko-sensei before, you know you’ll have good chemistry between characters and hilarious comedy scenes -though this one got a bit too sad at the beginning. Also, they all look alike characters from her previous works. Actually, the main couple of Mankai Darling makes a cameo here.

Bokura No Negai, by Kotetsuko Yamamoto, is a compelling BL manga focused on a mixed family of four brothers. It’s not revealing too much to say that shortly after their parents marry, Ryou, the oldest at 19, loses his father in a car accident; then, after his new mom and brothers are finished comforting him in his loss, the mother of the other three brothers passes away from cancer. Suddenly, Ryou is both older brother and parent to 18 year old Kento, 16 year old Hayato, and 13 year old Masato. Unbeknownst to Ryou, two of his younger brothers are gay, complicating an already grim future for his new family simply because of Japan’s backwards views on LGBTQ people.

Kotetsuko’s art and narrative pacing eschew the hyped-up emotional heat characteristic of most manga titles. The dramatic intensity of her work comes from her ability to conjure a quiet storm, delivering just enough information at just the right time to keep you turning the page. Rather than a visual onslaught of visual tropes and special effects, she lets the silences in between the dialogue - shown in close-ups, eye movement, and body language - build up over time until the emotion can’t be contained. It’s subtle, understated storytelling that leaves me feeling for the characters in a much more personal way than when the melodrama shouts from the page in exploding visuals.

Having fallen for her magic realist story, “Toritan, Birds of a Feather,” I started looking for other manga by Kotetsuko only to find that there weren’t any other English translations of her work. I did find several in Japanese and French, so opted to but the French version of Bokura No Negai, or Our Wish (English translations of this work are available on various websites). Even though it’s quite different from the utterly charming and quirkily supernatural Toritan, Bokura No Negai is worth both the money it costs to purchase in another language and also the extra effort to read it online if needed. (As a general rule, if I read a work online I also buy the original paperback to ensure the artist is compensated for their creativity). I am driving into Volume 2 right now.

Yo:

I—

This manga started off well enough. The drama was on point. Then everything began to fall from chapter 3. The progress makes me, idk— kind of uncomfortable?

I'm contemplating to continue this,,,,,

Some parts were confusing because the characters looked kinda similar.
But then I got used to it and I was hooked to see where this story goes.

One of my favorites. Really good story plot and the “character development” was also good. 5/5 heartwarming, romantic, sad(to an extent) but also funny! Will definitely re-read.
