There’s a sharp sting in reading "Dial 100", a collection of seven real-life crime investigations that peel off the thin veil separating safety and chaos in our everyday lives. Authored by Kulpreet Yadav, an ex-armed forces officer turned storyteller, this book is not just a collection of high-stakes police cases, it is a mirror held up to our country’s raw, uncomfortable truths. India’s justice system is often discussed with skepticism and disappointment. But the book takes the reader into the trenches to the very people who fight against the rot, with nothing but grit, deduction, and hope.

This is not an easy book. Not because the language is complex, it is, in fact, quite accessible, but because the reality it presents is disturbing, unfiltered, and gut-wrenching. It forces you to sit with the fact that real lives, real deaths, and real betrayals are unfolding around us, and yet we only glance at them in passing newspaper headlines.

At its core, this book is not just about crime, it's about the relentless pursuit of truth in a country where systemic limitations are often the biggest roadblocks.

Justice vs. Systemic Decay :

Each case is a battle against not just criminals but red tape, outdated infrastructure, and public apathy. You sense the frustration when a trail goes cold, or when a breakthrough is hindered by lack of resources. These officers do not operate in an ideal world, they improvise, they chase clues in the dark, and often risk their lives to bring criminals to book.

The Psychology of Crime:

From a calculating wife conspiring with an ex-lover to murder her husband to a remorseless cyber conman who scammed people for over six years, the book dives deep into the minds of the perpetrators. The criminal isn't always a monster, sometimes, they’re disturbingly ordinary. The banality of evil is terrifyingly real here.

The Human Cost of Law Enforcement:

The officers in these stories are not portrayed as flawless action heroes. They are overworked, emotionally battered, and morally torn, often paying a personal price to protect the society they serve. These men and women are haunted by the crimes they investigate. You see them as humans first, uniforms second.

Technology and Crime in the Digital Age:

The author showcases how forensic tools, cyber tracing, DNA and gait analysis, and narco-tests are no longer luxuries, they are necessities in today’s crime-solving arsenal. But there’s a sense of urgency here, a feeling that criminals are evolving faster than systems can handle, and it’s a chase where the outcome is never guaranteed.

✍️ Strengths :

🔸The author strikes a rare balance as he doesn’t romanticize violence, nor does he dilute the horror. The prose is sharp, fast-paced, and yet detailed enough to make you flinch. The storytelling is cinematic in tension but journalistic in tone,.a commendable combination that keeps the book engaging and grounded.

🔸Unlike mainstream media portrayals that often paint cops as either corrupt or infallible, this book humanizes the badge. It makes you pause and consider the human being behind that khaki uniform, someone with their own battles, doubts, and drive.

🔸Each case in this book is markedly distinct, in crime, geography, and investigative style. From Tamil Nadu to Mumbai, from train robberies to cyber fraud, the book offers a pan-Indian lens into crime and law enforcement.

🔸Beyond murder and robbery, this book nudges conversations around domestic violence, child abuse, misogyny, and systemic neglect. These stories are not just puzzles, they are social diagnoses, wrapped in the cloak of crime fiction.

✒️ Areas for Improvement:

▪️While the cases start with strong build-ups, many of them end too abruptly. There is a clinical efficiency in solving the crime, but the aftermath, the emotional, psychological, and social ripples, are left unexplored. It leaves the reader intellectually satisfied but emotionally undernourished.

▪️Despite the gripping plots, the individuals, especially victims and criminals, could have been more deeply fleshed out. At times, the narrative hurries past their backstories, reducing them to either statistics or case numbers. A deeper dive into their psyche could have added an extra layer of complexity.

▪️Some portions feel too procedural, almost like a police report. While that lends authenticity, it also robs the prose of human depth in moments where emotion should have landed heavier. Readers craving more visceral emotional connection might find it lacking.

In conclusion, it isn’t just a book, it’s a warning siren. It’s a grim reminder of what lurks beneath the surface of civility, and a respectful bow to the officers who confront that darkness every day. The author does an admirable job of bringing real-life policing into the limelight without whitewashing it or dumbing it down. This isn’t your average crime fiction. It’s harsher, rawer, more real and because of that, it’s more necessary. It dares to ask uncomfortable questions about crime, justice, and the moral ambiguity in between. And in doing so, it pays tribute to those who choose to stand between chaos and society, often at great personal cost.

𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖: 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋 100
𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑: 𝐊𝐔𝐋𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐓 𝐘𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐕
𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐑𝐄: 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐑

“𝑰𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐 𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒔, 𝒏𝒐 𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔. 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒈𝒖𝒆, 𝒑𝒂𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆.”

✦ It's really important to know what's going around me. Especially these days. Then it comes to this book which dug deep into 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬. 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋 100 is a 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 real life Indian crime events which are nothing but goosebumps. It is actually studying an investigation all by yourself and still don't get a clue why this really happened till you go to the last page.

✦ Each chapter of 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐋 100 serves a detailed police investigation that is led by 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 who went 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐲 to search for the truth. I feel they are the most challenging cases and most of them gave me the scenarios of 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐋 (you know what I mean).

✦ What I find interesting about this specific book is - this 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫. So you 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞. And one most crucial point is that it is not fictional, though it's better to point out that you don't want to put this book down as it increases its interest page after page. It turns out to be horrific. From relentless hard work to chasing after the criminal - we bother so less how these works are done. In other words, the author pays his gratitude towards the entire force.

“𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒔𝒘𝒊𝒇𝒕. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒆 - 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈."

✦ The author wrote these stories as he himself lived those ones. The pacing of these stories are 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐩 and 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 but 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧. He uses a thoroughness to portray every 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥. His writing is too 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 to create an atmosphere of 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 and 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 and to give the feeling of 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭. I think this is the magic of narrative that everyone talks about.

✦ It is also the truth that this book is not for faint hearted people. But in case you grew that interest - then best of luck. The author 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞 anything but this is the story itself that is 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. I found out there are slightly rough endings after a “𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡” of the stories - that feels 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 but it somehow kept nudging me. If you love to know about true criminal events then go beyond any further investigation.

✦ Each chapter feels fresh and 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 as if criminal minds are connected with each other making a scarf with one thread only. But they are also different. From a cyber criminal to a gruesome serial killer they all are trapped under the 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. The authenticity of this book is beyond any judgement. It is rare how these books caught me off guard to reality.

“𝑩𝒆𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂 𝒔𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑-𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒓, 𝒂 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚.”

”No matter how sophisticated the crime, how well-planned the execution or how advanced the technology used to mask it, there will always be someone in uniform, more determined, more resourceful and more relentless, ready to bring wrongdoers to justice.”

- Kulpreet Yadav, Dial 100

’Dial 100’ sifts through the police case files to present some of the heinous crimes committed in suburbs and the urban areas. The read humanizes the officers in uniform, who relentlessly go above their call of duty, day & night and bring the perpetrators behind bars. In a high stake, race against time where every clue is crucial, with their heart on their sleeves, the policemen have to not only combat criminals but also face the wrath of the public and the system.

Spanning seven high-profile cases, the engaging storyline crafted by Yadav through dialogues and scenarios offers a gripping exploration of the human psyche, revealing both the complexities of crime and the subtle nuances of justice. His crisp, cinematic prose combined with the depiction of cutting-edge technologies and cat and mouse chases induce a pulse-pounding tension and high-octane drama. The language is made accessible so that it's comprehended by the target audience. The investigative proceedings were presented with a certain degree of rawness that made me gasp in horror about their abhorrent nature.

Traversing the length and breadth of the country, from Mumbai in the west to Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the South, the narrative takes us through the working of respective police departments and what makes them unique and resilient in their own ways. The cultural nuances and intricate details pertaining to the area were demonstrated effectively.

In India, “Dial 100” is less of a distress helpline and more of a punchline. You dial it when you’ve run out of options, or hope. Let’s be honest, we don’t exactly grow up idolising the police. We’re more likely to exchange knowing sighs when someone says, “I had to go to the thana.” So, when I came across a book titled Dial 100, my first instinct was: “For what? To get hounded?” But I curbed my sarcasm, opened the book, and was pleasantly surprised.

The book dives into seven gritty cases, each beginning with a crime straight out of your worst headlines, and no, not the kind that gets solved during a press conference and forgotten the next day. Real crimes, real stakes, and… wait for it, real police work !. It’s not just lathi and luck anymore, there’s digital tracking, behavioural profiling, and a seriousness I didn’t expect. One case in particular, Case #5 stood out for me, not just because of how twisted it was, but because it eerily mirrored the Raja Raghuvanshi case. Watching justice unfold there felt oddly satisfying, like the universe briefly got its act together.

I won’t pretend this book made me suddenly trust the system, but it did nudge my cynicism a little. As someone from the tech world, I knew digital forensics existed, I just didn’t expect it to be used outside PowerPoint presentations and budget proposals. Turns out, some departments are actually using it to crack real cases. Who knew? Dial 100 doesn’t whitewash the mess, we all know the rot runs deep, but it does shine a light on the officers who still show up, still chase leads, and still believe in justice, even when the rest of us have stopped expecting it. If nothing else, it gave me a strange, reluctant hope.. and stories I couldn’t put down.

"Dial 100" by Kulpreet Yadav is a true-crime book with a collection of seven cases that is going to change your conception about police. We always complain that police don't do anything properly, they let the culprits roam freely, etc., but these seven cases show the different side of the police force, where they go beyond to find the answers and put the culprits behind bars.

Even though it's a book with some high-profile true crime cases, the author narrates it with his own gripping writing style, which makes the reading interesting and thrilling. But the remarkable part is the author did not exclude the true essence of the story; nothing is exaggerated but beautifully presented.

We get the perspective from the culprits, criminals, as well as the police officers, which makes them more human, and you can actually connect with them easily.

In thriller books and detective novels we always see how easily the police and the detective locate every clue and how easily they catch the culprits. But in real life when you have to do that where there are "150 officers per 100,000 citizens," it is quite hard work. But how these police officers work day and night, overcoming the impossible hurdles, is praiseworthy.

The book is a tribute to all these police officers, who keep working hard to maintain the law and order in our country. And I'm very grateful for this book. This book is also a reminder that "no matter how sophisticated the crime, how well-planned the execution, or how advanced the technology used to mask it, there will always be someone in uniform, more determined, more successful, and more relentless, ready to bring wrongdoers to justice."

The Indian police force is widely recognized for their bravery, sacrifice and service in maintaining law and order and protecting citizens. Despite being under-staffed, overworked and facing their share of criticism, their ingenuity and resourcefulness is cracking some difficult cases have been well known. "Dial 100 : Tough Cases, Tougher Policemen' is an attempt to recognise the contribution of the police and the unsung heroes in police uniforms.

The book features seven remarkable criminal cases from the recent times. From an uncrackable train robbery to cyber conman to serial killers, each case displays the bravery and resilience of the police force. The stories are picked from the different parts of the country and each of them highlights the tremendous effort and dedication in solving each case.

While the cases are terrifying to read, the author has not sensationalised them. Instead with each case, the author has chosen to highlight the ingenuity, the creative crime solving techniques and the clever use of technology by the police to overcome the shortage of resources. From narco test to gait analysis to call records, the use of technology and quick thinking by the police was really impressive, underlining the fact that crime however smart can't escape the law.The cases are presented in an engaging manner, with the use of scenes and dialogues, often giving you a glimpse into the motives and psyche of the most depraved criminals.

Overall, Dial 100 is a gripping read for anyone interested to understand the inner workings and the modus operandi of crime solving of Indian Police. A great read for the fans of the true crime genre.

Kulpreet Yadav's "Dial 100" is a gripping and frequently spine-tingling plunge into the actual criminal investigations that India's police force conducts. Far from thriller fiction, here are seven separate, high-risk cases where the superhuman commitment and keen intelligence of the officers are seen. From a wife's complicated murder plot to an inter-state train robbery, a serial killer's ghastly rampage, and a cyber conman's six-year flight, each case is a testament to the intricate and often invisible realm of crime-solving.

The author's vivid descriptions and breakneck speed pull the reader into the center of every investigation. We see officers cracking cryptic leads, using advanced forensic methods such as narco-analysis and DNA profiling, and going to great lengths to track down offenders. "Dial 100" is an engrossing and educational read, providing a unique and inside look at the problems and successes that have defined Indian crime-solving in the modern era. It's an engrossing testament to the tireless pursuit of justice by those on the ground.

The writing skills of the author are truly flawless and I was engaged throughout the book without getting bored at all. One story which really caught my attention is 'Skeleton In The Closet'. I will highly recommend this book to everyone. So grab your copy today and you will definitely enjoy reading it as much as I did because it has been an unputdownable experience for me.

Reading Dial 100 was a mixed yet engaging experience for me. On the one hand, the book delivers exactly what it promises—an inside look into some of the most unusual and high-stakes criminal cases in India. The variety of cases, from cyber fraud to cold-blooded murders, kept me hooked, and I found myself genuinely impressed by the patience and resourcefulness of the officers involved. The pacing is brisk, almost cinematic at times, which makes the book accessible even for readers who don’t usually pick up non-fiction.

At the same time, I felt the writing occasionally leaned too heavily on dramatization. While the storytelling approach works well to hold attention, certain sections felt more like a screenplay than a detailed investigation. For me, that diluted the weight of the real-life grit behind the cases. I also wished there had been a little more exploration of the social and systemic challenges the police face, beyond just the technical aspects of forensics and chase sequences.

That being said, the book succeeds in opening a window into a world most of us only glimpse in headlines. It reminded me that crime-solving isn’t about sudden flashes of brilliance but about perseverance, teamwork, and piecing together seemingly insignificant details. Dial 100 is not flawless, but it is certainly gripping, and for readers who enjoy true-crime narratives with a fast-moving plot, it will be a rewarding pick.

Okay, this book called “Dial 100” gave me chills and I’m not even kidding…😳
I picked it up thinking it’ll be like just another crime recap but no, this was real and intense from page one.

Seven real-life cases. Each more unbelievable than the last (A wife plotting murder with her ex?? A cyber criminal escaping for six years?? What is happening 😶)

I was hooked from the very first page because it reads like a thriller, but the fact that these are all real just hits different (It’s not fiction because these people actually did this and that was indeed the scariest part).

What I loved most is how it doesn’t just tell you what happened instead it takes you inside the investigation. The way officers used narco-analysis, DNA, even someone’s walk (it’s called gait analysis btw 😭) to crack the case?? That level of detail was crazy.

Also, can we just appreciate the officers who literally outsmarted criminals who thought they were untouchable ( because Imagine having that kind of brainpower and patience).

If you are someone who love true crime, thrillers, or anything fast-paced then this is a solid pick.

Short chapters, sharp writing, and so much adrenaline. 🚨10/10 would recommend reading this when you want your jaw to drop every few pages. 😮‍💨📖

If you are looking to read more Indian authors or if you are a true crime junkie or both, consider this your PSA: you need to get this book!

After devouring hundreds of books on police procedurals from the western world, it was such a breath of fresh air to read this one about our own police force.

I don’t scare easily. I love consuming content that is scary. In fact, the scarier and more gory, the better! But reading this one was scary for me. Probably because of the nature of the crimes, coupled with the fact that they were all true crimes and the way the author has written this.

From an inter-state train looting to a wife and her ex-lover murdering her husband, a cyber conman on the run, a serial killer, this book dives into 7 of India’s most complex police investigations.

It’s honestly not just the true crimes that stand out, but the resilience of the police men behind the badge. The author is a former uniformed officer himself and he brings empathy and edge to the storytelling.

At the end, it’s made me look at our police force in a very different light. And needless to say, my obsession with the police force continues.

The writing is simple yet sharp, smart and also deeply human.

With 7 real-life crime investigations, Dial 100 takes us deep into the world of Indian Policing. It goes behind the scenes of these incidents, creating a tense drama in solving high-stakes cases. Apart from the investigation process, it also depicts the harsh realities, hurdles, and emotional turmoil faced by the police personnel while dealing with heinous crimes. All the cases are diverse, covering a range of serious offences from a Money looting in a moving train to a cyber conman who cons people.

The author created an immersive reading experience, like starting each case with an overview and the tools of investigation. The writing is engaging and fast-paced, with descriptions of crime, gathering of evidence, and innovative use of modern techniques. The inclusion of modern challenges, such as tracking cyber conmen, demonstrates the evolving nature of crime and the police's adaptability. However, I find the ending of cases a bit rushed without any element of surprise.

If you are someone interested in true crime and legal thrillers, this book would fit the criteria perfectly.

This book will help you to understand how Police System , works in India and how they do tackle circumstances that are beyond the control.
The book covers High Profile cases such as gang loots etc and shows how high officials have solved those cases with the help of intellect .
Personally speaking , I loved reading this book as it is composed of cases of varied nature , this book will help one to understand three mindsets one is of Criminal, second is of victim and third is of Policeman.
As forensic science was one of my subject during law , so I even enjoyed reading cases that involved narco-analysis , DNA Profiling and Gait Analysis .
One of the moral one learnt while reading this book is that no matter what no one is above the law and also one always need to keep in mind that justice delayed is equivalent to justice denied.
Also , book will change your perspectives regarding police system or the executive machinery of the nation.

Kulpreet Yadav's Dial 100 is a disturbing and thought-provoking compilation of true crime stories based on real-life cases from around India. Yadav's quick, precise writing and journalistic attention for detail transport readers deep into society's underbelly, where desperation, anger, and criminality mix.

The efforts in solving such cases takes whole lot of procedures, tricks with many sleepless nights and efforts. We can truly witness this from the book from the authors lens.

The author's emphasis on actual occurrences and the circumstances surrounding them distinguishes this book from others in the true crime genre.

The comprehensive investigative procedures make you feel like you're right in the thick of the inquiry.

If you are fan of crime stories, I would definitely recommend to read Dial 💯

If high-stakes crime, badass cops, and edge-of-your-bed suspense are your thing—Dial 100 might just be your next adrenaline shot.

Kulpreet Yadav throws you right into the action, and I'm here for it.

Each chapter of this book unravels a real-life inspired case that feels like it's straight out of a crime movie.

Handsdown to the best police-story I've read in a long time. And the best part? They’re real people in uniform, juggling duty, ethics, and late-night calls.

Pick this one up if you want short, punchy stories with real stakes, no-nonsense action, and a side of police procedural that doesn't get lost in jargon.

A collection of true crime investigations from all over our country especially highlighting how the Indian police force functions to outwit criminals at times even when the cases have gone cold.
Deftly narrated all the stories will keep one gripped completely.
one of my favourite true crime story was how a rapist was caught even after years of crime through DNA preservation and careful observations.
Fans of CID or Crime Patrol will enjoy reading this!

It is a very gritty and nail-biting book that shares the author’s own experience with law enforcement in India. It holds the real insights, which give us a deep overview of the issues and challenges faced by police officers in our country. The book is really very engaging, and it will give you goosebumps to firsthand know about the crimes in detail and understand how they impact us all.
This book is the one that gave me a feeling of reading case files and solving cases, getting justice with them relentlessly through these stories. It has drama, highlights, technical and psychological aspects, and whatnot. Therefore, if you’re fascinated by crime-solving, forensic science, or just want to understand how justice is served under pressure, Dial 100 is definitely the book for you.
