As a combat hardened Navy SEAL Thom Grande has fought terrorism around the globe, but the one thing he can’t fight is his ex-wife. Or her lawyer. Or the alimony payments. Just when he thinks it can’t get any worse bad luck smacks him up side the head—literally. Now, he’s got a traumatic brain injury and can’t remember his own name half the time. The good news? He can’t remember his ex-wife or the woes she’s causing him either.
Virginia is alone, partially by choice because too much time spent around her mother drives her crazy, and partially because she has the worst luck ever with romance. But maybe her luck is changing because one hell of a hot and very naked man just showed up at her door. One problem—he can’t remember anything, including who he is. The more she sees, the more she realizes, that might not matter all that much.

It all started in first grade when Cat Johnson won the essay contest at Hawthorne Elementary School and got to ride in the Chief of Police's car in the Memorial Day Parade...and the rest, as they say, is history. As an adult, Cat generally tries to stay out of police cars and is thrilled to be writing for a living. She has been published under a different name in the Young Adult genre, but released her first romance in 2006.
Today, she is a NY Times & USA Today best-selling, award-winning author of contemporary romance. A promo ho, she's sponsored real live bull riding cowboys and promoted romance using bologna.
In this Novella we are following the stories of Thom - he's friends with the group of SEALs and ex-SEALs from the previous books - and Ginny. Virginia is just about ready to give up dating for ever! She doesn't have any luck with guys. But while she's house and cat-sitting in Massachusetts over Christmas, she finds a SEAL in the barn.
Thom has just barely healed from a job-related injury, when he crashes his car on the way to spend the holidays with his parents. Ginny finds him and takes care of him. He doesn't know who he is and what happened to him. And he especially doesn't know if he's single. And that's something he really wants to know....because sparks are flying this Christmas!
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THOM & GINNY??? WILL THE TWO OF THEM GET THEIR HEA??? WILL THERE BE A CLIFFHANGER??
I'm not telling you that of course ☺

This was the perfect little novella in this great SEAL-Romance series!!
I am such a huge fan of everything Navy SEAL!!!!!
Total fangirl!!!
I really loved this novella.
It's just sooo horribly short. It could've been such an amazing full-length story where we find out more about Ginny & Thom. There's sooo much more to tell. But it was really great the way it was. And even more perfect for me was the whole atmosphere. I love the holiday season and all that snow and hot chocolate and a hot Navy SEAL - what more can a girl want for Christmas?? ☺
There might have been a tiny bit too much redundant lines filling this story - not redundant for a full length story - because it was all about things we need or want to know, beautiful description of things... but for a short novella, I would've wanted to read a bit more about the romance part! But it was still perfect!!!!
SEALed at Midnight - was a really short but very beautiful & sexy Navy SEAL Christmas Novella! You'll love it!!!!!
Thom Grande, age 28 and divorced father of two, feels broken and alone. His ex really messed him up, and he’s not been with a woman in 18 months. To top that off, all of his buddies are getting out of the military, leaving Brody as his only friend left on his SEAL team. Then, on a dangerous mission Thom is injured and suffers temporary memory loss.
Virginia Starr has had no luck in the dating department. Alone and introverted, she takes a house-sitting job for the winter, moving away from family at Christmas time. One night, Ginny finds a stranger, frozen and clearly distraught, hiding in the barn. Bringing him inside to warm him up, the pair find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another.
NOTE: Potential spoilers in this review
I have mixed feelings about SEALed at Midnight. After loving the first two books in the series, I had high hopes for this one. And while the story moved quickly and the romancing was sexy, I had some issues with the plot.
First, I was a bit disturbed at how Virginia and Thom meet… he clearly has psychiatric issues, and Ginny not only just lets him into the house that she doesn’t own, but cuddles up to him. I don’t care how frostbitten the boy was or how cute he may be, this just doesn’t sit well with me.
Second, the pair spends very little time together, yet by the end of the book, they are ready to try a long distance relationship. I felt it was too soon, in that the author hadn’t truly established a strong connection between the pair. I needed a few more scenes with Ginny and Thom together, talking, smexing, whatever, but something more.
Overall, SEALed at Midnight is a steamy story, but left me unsatisfied. This story is full of promise and easily could have been a B+ or better, but while I enjoyed reading the novella, the story felt cut short and left me hanging. I don’t know if I would even classify the book as an HFN (happily for now), due to the fact that the couple didn’t even meet until after 50% mark and shared only a handful of scenes together. I’m hoping that Ms. Johnson takes the time to finish Thom and Ginny’s story in a future title.
My Rating: C+ Liked It, but I had issues Originally posted at That's What I'm Talking About
I normally really like whatever this author writes but this one just didn't work for me. It spent way to much time setting things up before the main characters even meet, then it's one hot night and then they are split. A quick makeup later and they are a couple. Too much technicality not enough of the characters together, getting to know each other or for us to know them. I got to the end of the book and was...yeah ok. I kept waiting for it to get better but it just didn't. I didn't hate it but was not impressed either.
-Shrugs- Too much technical issues not enough romance, and the fact he's gotten memory loss 2x seems really far fetched. Not that great of a short novella, not enough.
Romance genre: forced proximity Series: Hot SEALs Length: 149 pages

Commentary: I really liked this one! Despite the repeating amnesia (I like it once in a story, but twice seems a bit much - I don't understand the need for the first time), I really felt the connection between the two characters and how happy they made each other feel. His parents, especially his dad, were so cute in how proud they were of him.
Sealed At Midnight By Cat Johnson Thom Grande is a Navy SEAL. He, along with other members of his SEAL team are on a mission to capture "Jihadi John", the executioner of many British and American prisoners. As they land and begin to disembark from the Blackhawk helicopter, there is a loud explosion. Thom blacks out. He wakes up in the hospital and finds out from his friend Brody that the helio was hit with an RPG and the hatch door hit Thom. As a result, Thom has a brief case of amnesia. After speaking with Brody for a while, his memory returns, including the memory of his kids and nasty divorce. As he recuperates, Thom decides to surprise his family by arriving Christmas morning for breakfast in Massachusetts. There is a snowstorm and traffic is slow. Knowing the area, he takes a side road. All of a sudden a deer is in the road, he swerves and ends up hitting a tree. Virginia Starr, or Ginny as she likes to be called, is a freelance editor and an aspiring author, with a habit of dating losers. While looking for a new apartment, Ginny comes upon an ad for a house sitting position in Massachusetts. She calls, and gets it, after all, "she can write anywhere". As Christmas draws near, Ginny is feeling a little sorry for herself because she doesn't have a boyfriend and she is experiencing writer's block. She watches a show that gives her advice on how she can make changes so that she can begin to meet new people. She decides to begin after New Year's. Because of a storm, the lights go out in the house. She realizes that she forgot to bring in some firewood. While she is out there, she goes to shut the barn door that keeps banging and grab the snow shovel. Out of nowhere a hand grabs her around the mouth. She hears a male voice telling her to "shhhh, they will hear you." "Who " Ginny asks? "The insurgents" is the reply. After a little more conversation, Ginny tells the person that they are in Massachusetts. She realizes that the man is cold and wet and invites into the house to get warm. Ginny does this even though she thinks that she is one of those girls that are "too stupid to live" from horror flicks. They spend the night talking. Thom wakes the next day a little disoriented and snuggling Ginny. One thing leads to another and they end up making love. Thom goes down to check on his car leaving a note where he is and will be right back. His friend Chris is waiting for him by the totaled car. Chris tells him that they have to leave now because they have intel where Jihadi John is located. Thom doesn't have time to go back and tell Ginny that he has to leave. Weeks go by and she hasn't heard from Thom. Ginny decides to write a different kind of book than the one she already started, one dealing with finding a SEAL with amnesia. Eventually after the mission, Thom returns. He explains to her where he was and they tell each other how they feel and decide to begin a long distance relationship. After all, "she can write anywhere". As always, I love Cat Johnson's stories. Poor Thom, amnesia twice. I thought Ginny's character was funny, especially when she found Thom in the barn and kept telling herself that she was like one of those "too stupid to live girls" from the movies because she takes Thom into the house and for all she knows, he is a lunatic. This story was also very timely as Ms Johnson discusses ISIS and the military's efforts to capture the Jihadist who executed American civilians. Ginny and Thom take a risk in order to find happiness. I look forward to hearing about them as Ms Johnson continues this series. I highly recommend this book. I give it Five moons.
We've met our hero in the past few books. You really feel for him because it sounds like his ex-wife is a really piece of work - took everything and wanted him to be miserable. He was away and couldn't see his kids too bad he was told if he wanted to see them. He can't really afford all the bills, again too bad you need to pay for YOUR kids he's told. Yep, the ex-wife's a really good work of art. Anyhow, when our hero gets leave to go see his parents over the holidays and ends up in an accident, he ends up meeting our heroine.
Our heroine wanted to do something different, so she's decided to house sit over the holiday while working on her book and her online job. What she didn't realize was how in the middle of no where it was. However, she was soon busy with our hero when he has a car accident and she helps him.
One of the main problems is our hero has no memory because of the accident. Of course having his head get hit a few months early doesn't help the situation either. However, when he gets back to his car he finds one of his buddies around and also he's needed back on base. He's gone so fast he doesn't even have time to tell our heroine and disappears. Will they get back together?
This was pretty good. I really identified with the hero really having a crappy life as mine seems to be this way lately. However, the heroine not having any survival skills and being stuck in the middle of no place made me laugh because I can see someone not used to things doing what she was. The characters were good and entertaining. The plot was original and kept you wondering when or if they were going to get back together. Another great read.
Tom and Ginni. A very short novella or in my case a 3 hr audiobook. Tom meets Gini while hallucinating that he is back in Iraq, after hitting his head in a car accident. It's not that simple cause the author has already spent the first half of the already very short book, setting up the characters and story. Really, the MCs are only in the same space for a small amount of the story. You'd think this would be a great read. It has all the plot devices I like... Amnesia, trapped together during storm, Power outage, hot navy guy. But nope. It was actually kinda boring and in no way romantic. To make it even less romantic, Ginni is also a let down. Even the author can't think of anything interesting to say about her. She also has one of the most insensitive, useless best friends ever. Disappointing, but I've certainly read far worse. It just was kinda pointless. Ive been meaning to read this author for ages, so I hope this isn't indicative. I have another cowboy book by her I'll try before I give up.
Ginny (Virginia) Starr a want-to-be writer takes a short term house sitting job in rural Massachusetts and it is going fine until a Christmas Eve snowstorm. The power is out, the house is cold and the barn door is banging so she goes out into the night to shut the door and is captured by a strange man that thinks he is part of the Alpha team hunting insurgents.
Thom an expert Navy SEAL and recently recovered from memory loss from a head wound, so when he hit his head in a car accident on a rural road, he lost some shot-term memory again. He isn't dressed for the weather, is freezing and has a head wound so Ginny takes him into the house where they build a fire and things get very hot before morning for these two lonely people.
Military life is difficult; when Thom returns to his wrecked car looking for his phone, he is called back for a mission and has to get back to Virginia right away, so he is forced to leave without telling Ginny goodbye.
One of my favorite romances is a hot SEAL when he finds a good woman to love and SEALed at Midnight is fast, fun and full of romance. Will Ginny and Thom patch up their differences after he disappeared on Christmas Day? or not?
I listened to the Audiobook. Neither the story of the narration did much for me. The narration was kind of monotone.
I didn't feel any investment in either character. The summary said Thomas had TBI. He lost his memory TWICE. The second time, which I would think was equally dangerous, if not more, he basically just shook it off and went back to work.
Ginny, who was kind of sad and lonely, lets this kind of Looney Tunes dude in the house she is staying at, way out in the country. It's an ID channel story just waiting to happen. Was she really that desperate?
The whole thing didn't work for me. The story wasn't entertaining, engaging, or even very interesting. It started out ok, then completely fell apart. I have read and listened to this writer before and enjoyed her work. Not sure what happened with this one, but it was disappointing.
I voluntarily listened to and reviewed the Audiobook received from the author.
Thomas is down on his luck in every way: no home, broke, divorced and lonely. Added to that, he has issues with his short term memory. Ginny can't seem to keep a man. Added to that, she's snowed in and away from friends and family for Christmas. When Thom gets into an accident in the middle of the night, he ends up at Ginny's door.
I didn't really enjoy this story as much as I did the first two. The other books were short, too, but they managed to touch a few things in each. In this one, Thom's brain injury isn't really ever addressed, and Ginny doesn't seem to know about it, either. I know that Thom had already decided to continue active duty, but there wasn't any follow-up mention of how things were going with GAPS.
This is one novella I definitely think should have been a full-length novel.
Short and slow story is 3 hours long (1.5 to me as I listen at 2x speed) and the couple doesn't meet until halfway into the book. This one should have been called Night with a seal as that's all it was. There is no chemistry as I can't even remember them having a conversation where Thom was lucid. There is absolutely no reason to think this couple will last longer than 3 months max.
If the entire book was just about getting trapped in the snowstorm it would have been good novella- time to develop a relationship between them. First chapter should have been Thom driving home for Christmas in the storm and end with the crash and amnesia. Instead, its a mismatch of some military plot where nothing happened and a one-night stand and none of it worked.
Pretty good but it felt like it ended when it should have been starting. We have Thom and all his issues, then he meets his girl, then he leaves, then they decide they might try to have a relationship, and then the story ended???
Nothing is really worked out, he still has issues with his ex, his kids, his money, his health, his job, etc. but he might have a chance at dating someone, so all is well?
I liked the story that was there, but another chapter or two to tie everything, anything or something up would have been nice. Nothing, not even the relationship, was resolved when the book ended - more please!
Cat Johnson is a go to author for me because she can write military romance in such a way that you feel you know the military characters personally. We feel the emotions to our core. The same feeling we feel when we personally know military men and women who have been in battle, those who have served by those who were in battle and those who battle the front lines at home while our enlisted loved ones are away.
I felt for Thom Grande early on in the book. Life hasn’t been the easiest in the recent past and then he gets a head injury. However, life keeps going and when the “clouds” clear, again, he finds himself in a situation he doesn’t mind one bit. The heat comes quick in this particular book and I don’t mind one bit. Let’s say our heroine doesn’t either.
Virginia is relatable to those of us who find ourselves where dating is more of a chore than enjoyment. However, the thought of spending time alone, all the time, isn’t one we really like to face. Then we have those that constantly remind us of the situation. Who would have guessed that the person of your dreams seems to be dropped right on your front door step.
I felt this book could have tied up some things before it ended. An explanation of why Thom had memory loss when they first met was one. We know that the mission he is on when the book started isn’t is his last but with the issue he was having when they met, has it been completely resolved and no further jars/bumps cause issues? The book seemed to go by quickly but I did enjoy it and love Cat’s writing.
I really enjoyed the audio version of this book. The narrator did an excellent job in conveying the characters’ emotions as well as all the little things like making specific sounds such as demonstrating the swallowing hard as well as reading the text.
Ginny is in Massachusetts house sitting. Home in Connecticut, her leaving has left hardly a ripple. The job she signed on for is from December 1 to March 1, three wonderful rent free months! Like every other day in her predictable life, she spends her days freelance editing and her evenings working on the bestselling novel she's been worrying over without much success. Now that Christmas is almost here, she's feeling lonely, while knowing her patents want her to come home for the holidays. Not a huge fan of her mother's lectures on finding a husband and the bleakness of life without one, she's been dodging her mother's calls. With the Christmas Eve snowstorm covering the world in cascades of white flakes, she won't even need to make up an excuse. Thom is driving through the night to get home to Massachusetts to see his parents for the holidays from his Navy base in Virginia. Hurt on the team's last mission, he's just recovered from the concussion and memory loss he suffered. He's crossed into the state, when snow starts to fall heavily and he sees an emergency vehicle approaching from the rear, as the cars ahead of him slow suddenly. So much for 30 more minutes to Mom and Dad's driveway!
Thom a Navy SEAL has been struggling to co-parent with his ex-wife. It seems she got everything in the divorce. Thom is determined to stay single, thinking his life in the Navy is too much for a relationship. After being sidelined with an injury and head injury he decides to spend the holidays with his parents.
However a snow filled night ends up with his SUV wrapped around a tree and his memory more than a little foggy. When Virginia or Ginny as she is calls finds him in the shed talking about insurgents she is more than a little frightened but willing to help him figure out where he is. Bringing him in to warm up, the lights go out. Snuggled up by the fire, his memory starts to come back. After he remembers he is single and not married, he wouldn't mind trying with Ginny.
When the morning comes, he tries to find his car, and he is called in on a mission. Not having a chance to say goodbye to Ginny before he has to take off. Leaving Ginny without word, leaves her feeling like he is like all the other guys from her dating websites. However, when he shows up again trying to convince her to give him a shot, she isn't so sure he isn't the real deal!
We continue to get acquainted with more “hot SEALs” in this series. This time, the story centers less on action and more about relationships . If you have listened/read the previous books, you’ve met Thom Grande. He’s divorced , with two kids and overwhelmed with the alimony payments and his ex’s demands. Virginia/GInny, is a writer dealing with writer’s block, unlucky in love and deciding what she’ll do with her life as she housesits an isolated property. Thom is recovering from a brain injuring and is driving to visit his parents, when he once again gets injured and has temporary amnesia. After rescuing Thom during which time he gets his memory back, he disappears from Ginny’s life. Why did he leave her? Will she ever see the man that inspired her to finally write her book? And if he comes back, can she trust that Thom is saying the truth? Once again, the narrator, Craig Jessen, does a very good delivery of the voices. Looking forward to more stories in this series.
Thom is a Seal. He is also divorced with 2 kids. While on a mission, he is injured and wakes up at a hospital. When he awakes, he knows his buddy but can't remember anything else for awhile. Ginny is a writer. She decides she needs a break from dating after a third excuse for ditching from the guy she is seeing. She answers an ad to house sit and is now in Massachusetts. Thom is on his way to see his parents when he is in an accident. He shows up at a place cold and disoriented. Ginny has gone out to get firewood when she is caught from behind. The guy thinks he is in another country. She gets him inside and warmed up. He eventually remembers everything. Thom is back from his mission. Can he get Ginny to forgive him and give him a second chance?
Yes, I did enjoy listening to, "Sealed At Midnight" Written by Cat Johnson although, I felt Cat didn't put her whole self into this addition to the "HOT SEALS SERIES. "
I felt in some areas the story was rushed and left me with questions that will never be answered.
Craig Jessen did an AMAZING job with the main characters and if given more time, the story probably would have had a more solid ending.
I would still recommend this audiobook and I still hope to read more Hot SEALS!
While this is the third book in the Hot SEALs series, it can be read/listened to as a stand alone story. The setting and most of the characters are different from the first two books. I would recommend this series to listeners who like the story to focus on how two characters get together instead of relationship drama.
I listened to the Audible version. Craig Jessen does a great job with the narration.
Thom is a SEAL. Ginnie was a writer. They both have had problems with their relationships. Ginnie agreed to stay 6 months caring for the house and cat. Thom was on his way to visit his parents when he lost control of his car. Ginnie found him in the barn. He didn't know his name or how he got there. Cat Johnson weaves a wonderful tale. Don't miss a minute
I loved that Thom got a chance at a HEA after all his troubles. He really is going through it and Ginny is just what he needs. Ginny is such a scatter brain but has a huge heart. Had a soft spot for him since book 1. Just wish it was longer and we get a better ending. I know it sort of carries on in the series but not quite good enough.
Mat writes about strong Alfa males that lift your hearts while you are thinking about them. Heaven knows, as much as i loved my husband, he was a very timid man and definitely NOT an Alfa! Is it too much to dream of another life? I don’t think so!! Any way Kat really makes a very good story!
I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the rest of the series! Its not a full length story, but I didn't feel like the characters and plot were missing anything. 1 sex scene with fairly mild language.
Craig Jessen is a new narrator for me. After I got used to his softer tone, I loved his voice.
Cute story. Poor Thom. Injured on mission and then injured again on leave. Honestly his ex sounds like a pill too. Like how can you do that to a man and take his kids and all that cause he is a soldier and away. Horrible. Ginny was adorable. And sweet and liked how she just wanted to help him.
A little snowstorm was nothing and could easily be handled…yeah, right! Sometimes the best laid plans get twisted with a surprisingly good outcome. SEALed at Midnight is an engaging short story that definitely held my interest and was so much fun reading. Definitely recommend it.
SEALed at Midnight: Hot SEALs (Hot SEALs series Book 3)
Losing your memory is scary, getting it back is a relief and then to lose it again! That's pretty intense. But finding a person to love in the mix is always wonderful.
Ginny and Thom have a quick read. It’s ending is a little abrupt but fits the title I guess. It’s not really a cliffhanger but does state the story continues in another book.
