This New Adult Romance tells the story of a wounded young woman and a charismatic ship’s captain. Does their love stand a chance?
Eighteen-year old Meredith Roxley is on the run from Kempton, the man who preyed on her when she was in her early teens. When Meredith tells her aunt Clara that Kempton has tried to snatch her, her aunt spirits the family away on a three-month sea trip.
On board the "MV Albion" Meredith meets Captain Raphael Maynard, a handsome hunk of a man, well-seasoned in the art of love. Meredith finds herself falling for him, but two things stand in the way of any love affair: - An age gap of twelve years. The Captain is thirty years old. Meredith knows that her over-protective aunt will not allow such a relationship. - Meredith’s fear of sexual intimacy. This threatens any chance of happiness with the Captain as she struggles with her past.
Will the Captain persevere in his attempt to free Meredith from this psychological bondage, while knowing nothing of her history? Or will he decide the effort is not worth his while?
** This the first of a series of novellas telling the story of Meredith and the Captain, and includes the first two chapters of Book 2 : "Perilous Seas". ** The adult content of the story makes the series suitable for those of 17 and over.
The premise is okay but the dialogue and overall wording of the story leaves me wanting. The writing is awkward and weird. The characters sound mechanical. Besides that the characters aren’t endearing. I don’t like them. I’m not interested in them. I don’t understand why they like each other. This book has definitely left me wanting for a good read. I feel bad for the author but I don’t recommend this book.
After a kidnapping attempt Meredith’s aunt arranges for the family to take a cruise in order to get away from the man who has “found” her; (I don’t see how that solves the problem). At sea, Meredith becomes attracted to Raphael, the Captain. In between babysitting her niece she goes sight seeing and has dinner with the Captain. Not much going on there. I don’t see the romance and excitement.
With the kidnapping attempt in the beginning I was expecting an entertaining story with substance but the tale had nothing and said nothing about the kidnap attempt. This scene was pointless. Only notable reference to this incident was insinuations of issues being intimate with the Captain. Don’t see the reason this should be written in parts. A dull story which drags on.
I got this book as a free download and was excited to read it. I should have read the reviews first.
The other reviewers are accurate, the "Captain" in this book is a total creep. He sounds like he is literally grooming this significantly younger girl and their sexual encounter is the culmination of his actions. There is nothing wrong with an older man and a younger woman but this book literally skeeved me out.
I was also uncomfortable that at the end of the book, the girl's response was to blame herself and be afraid of losing a man because of the implication that she had been assaulted earlier in her life. Not an ideal relationship that I have any intention of reading a second book to learn more about.
If you can get past the spelling errors and then the fact that a 30 year old man is trying to have sex with a barely 18 year old girl then its ok. But what I really hate is that the book just leaves in the middle of the story. Then you have to keep buying books. Most books have some kind of conclusion. Then the next book goes into another story. This just stops. I dont like someone trying to force you to pay for one book after another. But the story was do juvenile I wont be doing that. I dont care how it will eventually end after buying half a dozen books. Good luck with that.
I couldn't get into this book due to the age of the girl and the age of the captain. I don't like reading about teenage drama. Also, I know several older men that think they are "entitled" to a much younger woman. The attitude of these men disgusts me and how they manipulate younger women. I tried telling myself that it was just a book. The basic premise of this book is great. It is too bad that I couldn't get past my own biases.
So I did enjoy it, but there were a few things that made this rating so low. For one thing, the Captain was very creepy, and too forward. It wasn't okay at all for him to just do what he wanted while she was very helpless or so it seemed through her eyes.
I also didn't enjoy having a panic attack of the not so carefully implied past rape. I'm fine if you mention it, but "prey" doesn't always mean rape. You do have to specify.
For those reasons, I will not even humor getting the second book.
