Inevitably this review will mention how hard I find this to read, so, here we go - Bocchi is one of the shortest books that takes me the longest time to read. Its format is stuffed to the point of overstuffed; at least you can’t say you don’t get your money’s worth.

And, that aside, this is a better than average volume with a lot of okay and some pretty good, anchored by an ongoing plotline that really works and has a worthwhile emotional payoff. It may be a little obvious to deploy somebody even worse with people than Bocchi to make the latter better, but it absolutely works.

There’s also a lot less of the band’s hard-drinking senpai and a judiciously employed appearance from rival band Sideros as well. I love how Sideros is definitely the more popular band, yet Kessoku Band always gets the better of them (unintentionally) in their encounters.

Beyond the big arc, Bocchi also gets dragged across Kyoto by Kita and another girl from their class. This is a lot of fun, but I’d be lying if I said my recent visit to Kyoto didn’t influence my reception. Still, deer poop is deer poop. And Bocchi being swarmed is an easy gag, but those four-legged mooches really are that vicious.

I’m rarely one for fourth-wall breaks, but I have to admit that the ones here really tickled me. Bocchi being manhandled for literally turning into trademarked game icons like a liquid slime from Dragon Quest was very good and there’s a brilliant Picasso gag later on.

But the big storyline involves the series’ YOASOBI parody, Klimt’s Night, who end up on the same label as Kessoku Band and offer to open for their release party. Well, one of them does at least.

The singer of KN is a ridiculous gyaru stereotype, but their lyricist, Ame, makes Bocchi look more gregarious than Dick Clarke on New Year’s Eve. Uh, the alive version of Dick Clarke that is.

Anyway, Bocchi and Ame bond quickly and one of the running jokes I loved this volume is that Ame super respects and admires Bocchi, but nobody believes Bocchi when she tells them. It’s a cute aside that crops up several times, but not enough to wear out its welcome.

This all leads to Bocchi doing something to try and help Ame realize her own talents and it threads the needle crazy well in having a legitimate heartfelt conclusion and then savagely undercutting it with a wild joke that absolutely works.

Everything else is good enough. I do enjoy these volumes, though I do wish I was reading it in a more standard format than the tankobon. I guarantee I would enjoy it more. Still, it’s funny and has a nice sentiment and that’s a bit of a win.

3.5 stars - if you like Bocchi without reservations, easy choice for you. Even with my struggles consuming this particular media, there’s no denying that this is a solid entry for the series.
