Celibatarii

Unul dintre primele romane ale lui Henry de Montherlant, Celibatarii, descrie moravurile fetelor batrane si ale celibatarilor din Parisul anilor 1920. Inca de la inceputul romanului, cei doi celibatari, domnul de Coetquidan si nepotul sau, Leon de Coantre, se confrunta cu moartea mamei celui din urma, doamna de Coantré, care toata viata si-a asumat rolul de protectoare a celor doi. Pe patul de moarte, ea il roaga pe fiul ei sa aiba grija mereu de unchiul lui. Dupa moartea mamei, Leon isi da seama ca averea pe care trebuia sa o mosteneasca nu reprezinta altceva decat niste datorii si este nevoit sa paraseasca, impreuna cu unchiul elie, casa parinteasca. incepand din acest moment, cei doi vor fi nevoiti sa infrunte multe greutati (financiare, afective etc.) pentru a supravietui.

Henry de Montherlant (1895-1972) fut romancier, dramaturge, essayiste et poète. Il était membre de l’Académie française et peut être considéré comme un des plus grands écrivains du XXe siècle, à l’égal d’un Proust ou d’un Céline.

קראתי את הספר בעקבות ביקורת שסקרנה אותי באתר Neglected Books. בדיקה באינטרנט העלתה כי הספר תורגם לעברית (תרגום נהדר בידיו האמונות של יהשע קנז) – זה תמיד מפליא להיווכח, כל פעם מחדש, כמה עשיר אוצר הספרים שכבר תורגמו לעברית במאה השנה האחרונות. ספר צרפתי שנכתב בין מלחמות העולם בידי סופר שמרן – מזכיר מאוד את סגנונו של סלין (אף הוא קצת אנטישמי ואולי מסמפט של הכיבוש הגרמני) בטרגיות ההומוריסטית ובסרקזם המושחז שאינו חדל מלקצץ בגיבוריו ובחברה הצרפתית והאנושית בכלל.

כפי שמעידה תמונת האווזים הנודדים בסוף הספר, בה משתרכים שלושה אווזים בעקבות ראש החץ של הלהקה, לספר שלושה גיבורים תימהוניים, דמויות מוקצנות (ואולי לא) של אנשים שאינם מצליחים להשתלב בחברה (מי כן?).הם כמובן רווקים, כמשתמע. רווקים מזדקנים. שתי דמויות משנה - אחים בני שבעים ומשהו – אוקטב ואלי. שני צאצאים למשפחת אצילים. ביישנים המתקשים בפיענוח קודים חברתיים. הראשון מתחזה תמידי, שבזכות מזל וחבר ילדות צבר הון ומצליח להציג תדמית מכובדת. השני זקן תמהוני וילדותי, שנפלט כבר כשהיה צעיר, מן החברה (כיום היה אולי מאובחן בסוג של אוטיזם). ודמות אחת ראשית – לאון דה קואנטרה – אציל בן 54 שמוצאו מפוקפק, פושט רגל, אחוז חרדות וחסר כל כישורים חברתיים גם הוא.

העלילה עוקבת אחר שתי שנותיו האחרונות של לאון. הסוף כמובן אינו טוב ובמסורת הריאליזם הצרפתי גם אינו יכול להיות אחר. דה מונתרלאן אינו מפסיק ללעוג לדמויותיו ולהגחיך אותן ואינו חוסך שבטו גם ממנהגי החברה הצרפתית שבה הן חיות. יש כאן סרקזם נהדר. בגלל הדמויות הקיצוניות בחוסר היכולת לתפקד חברתית, נוצרות סצנות המגחיכות מוסדות חברתיים ופרקטיקות בורגניות (קטעים משעשעים במיוחד הם הביקורים אצל עורך הדין והרופא הכפרי). וזאת מכיוון שבכל אחד מאתנו ישנה גרסה (מרוככת או לא) של לאון הנוירוטי. כפי שמעיד גם המספר עצמו בסיום הפגישה עם הרופא – "כל זה היה משולל כל הגיון, אך לא כה שונה כפי שאפשר לשער מיחסו של איש רגיל כלפי הרפואה והרופאים."

כתבתי "סרקזם נהדר". אך יש להודות כי כיום כבר לא היו כותבים כך על דמיות הסובלות מבעיות נפשיות. אצל הקורא העכשווי (לפחות אצלי, שבמקרה גם אני בן 54 וביישן) מתעוררות לעיתים מדקרות המצפון מתוך ההתעללות מכמירת הלב שעוברות הדמויות בידי המחבר. ואולי זו גם הייתה כוונתו של המחבר עוד בזמנו. להציף מתוך הקומדיה והלעג לחברה את הטרגדיה שבבסיס הזקנה והקיום האנושי בכלל. ספר מר-מתוק. ולמרות הכאב גם נהדר.

Two eccentric noblemen who live cut off from society are forced to face a bleak future of poverty after their estate collapses from the outstanding debts left by a dead relative. This being a de Montherlant novel, things generally do not go well for our "heroes". Highly recommended to anyone who likes to read about awful things happening to unlikable people.

Full of satire, mainly mocking the bourgeois and the declining aristocrats. This was a well-written novel full of witty descriptions of these terrible people. I enjoy the writing extremely, it has the same humour as ‘The Confederacy of the Dunces’. However, it is a bit of a slow moving novel. While I enjoy the writing, I did find it at times a bit of a slog to get through.

I plucked this book off the shelf of the BMV Bookstore at Yonge and Eglinton -- it had been in the Unique Finds section for at least two years, waiting for me to notice it.

The cover is what caught my eye, but the novel itself? It is the type of book that I know I will never give up, because after having read it, I know I will read it again and again over the course of my life -- that special category of book, so good, such a unique edition, if my collection of books was in danger of being destroyed by a flood, and I only had one suitcase to save what I could -- THE BACHELORS by Henry de Montherlant would now make it into the suitcase.

This is a novel that I hope will one day be picked up by the New York Review of Books, because as far as I can tell, it has been out-of-print for quite some time -- and, really, it's the type of novel (great international literature, originally published in 1934!) that deserves to be widely read in the 21st century.

Les Celibataires.
Autore teoricamente conosciuto ma messo in sordina per le sue posizioni più ancora politiche che morali (di norma è un "misogino", pura bestemmia).
Questa in realtà è la storia di due inetti e inattuali, estranei agli anni folli che intercorsero tra le due guerre, drogate di ottimismo e fiducia nelle sorti progressive dell'umanità.
Sullo sfondo di una Francia economicamente collassata e proiettata al di là dell'Atlantico, un cinquantenne e un settantenne dividono solitudine, miette di pane, gloriosi ricordi e tanta sporcizia sui vestiti, corpi, casa nobiliare di Arago e in due teste asincrone sul tempo.
Andrà peggio a Coantré, ramo di nobiltà acquisita e più giovane, che al vecchio Coetquidan, più attrezzato, di famiglia in cui almeno uno è riuscito a diventare borghese, il fratello che sfoglia il Daily Mail capendo una parola su venti.
Amarissimo resoconto di una vita poco interessante, e perciò straordinaria cronaca di gentucola che vive tutta nel proprio cervello, che elabora passato, biais, orgoglio, paura e l'inesorabilità della fine.
Meno di 200 pagine, si legge tutto d'un fiato e, se volete andare dritti al sodo, cercate a metà la "notte brava" di Coantré a Montmartre, felice di lasciar Parigi, con ben 500 franchi in tasca, alla caccia della mai dimenticata Mariette.

I enjoyed this book very much: first published in 1934, takes place in the 1920's and translated to english from the French Les Celibataires. Two titled aristocratic bachelors, M. Elie and his nephew Leon share a house left to them by M. Elie's sister. They have little money, having never disposed themselves to work, dress like tramps in clothes from an earlier era, and apparently never bathe.
Leon is not quite so badly off, as he once had a "life" during his youth, but a business investment fell through and he never quite found his way forward after that time. When extra funds or extraordinary assistance is needed, they rely on their wealthy, but parsimonious, Uncle Octave (M. Elie's brother).
It is quite apparent each suffers his own version of a debilitating mental illness; they are not insane or dangerous, but suffer anxiety and have habits that a normal person would not experience.
The book is written with a quiet humor. The character studies of these three men and the several side characters is superb. In the last few pages where Leon realizes what he has lost in life by having too much "pride" is touching and sad.
It's a short little book at 190 pages, and I would certainly consider reading it again someday.

I suspect that A Reader's Manifesto: An Attack on the Growing Pretentiousness in American Literary Prose, which I greatly enjoyed, recommended this. I can't. It's not clear whether the original 1934 French, and the fusty, timebound 1960 translation are equally awful, but what I'm reading is unfit for human consumption.

I saw another review on here when adding this book which says that they would recommend this "to anyone who likes to read about awful things happening to unlikeable people". I could not summarise it better. It's well-written, but the main characters are detestable and I found it difficult to engage with.
