Adara Flameborn was raised by The Mage’s Tower, the other mages there the only family she’s ever known.

When her closest friends are all killed in the war with Orik, Adara decides in her rage and grief to kill the only person left to Adrik’s Queen Adalind. When her assassination attempt is foiled, Adara finds herself imprisoned in a room that cuts her off from her magical gift and tortured by a cold-hearted orc that she grows to hate. But when the queen comes to her with a chance for clemency if she takes on a dangerous mission with the very same detestable orc, she has little choice but to say yes.

Urim ka Churnok is the orc that gets things done, no matter the actions needed or the price to be paid.

When his queen comes to him with a high-stakes mission that could turn the tide of the coming war, he accepts without question. Even though it means going into enemy territory with a mage who hates him, likely never to return.

When the two make it into Barakrin, the enemies’ territory, everything goes wrong and they find themselves chained together, on the march to be blood slaves for Lord Grazrath himself.

Forced together, they find an attraction grow between them, against their wills and common sense. When Urim must pick between Adara and finishing his mission, will he save the woman he has come to care for? Or will he let her burn?

War Mage, book 4 in the War Brides of Adrik series.

We meet Adara Flameborn in book 1, and this book which focuses on her character, starts right off where we met her on book 1. She is placed in a cell that takes away her ability to use her magic, and is questioned by Urim, the Shield to King Rognar. Adara grows to hate Urim during her months in the cell. One day, she is let out and asked by the Queen to go on a mission, one that only she can fulfil. Because of this, she asks for something in return that the Queen agrees to, and that becomes Adara's only motivation to complete this mission. Urim is tasked to go with Adara on the mission. While they start off hating each other, that hate slowly turns into something else…

I actually enjoyed War Mage even more than I enjoyed the first book in this series. I really liked Adara's character, she is stubborn enough that she comes out of the months of captivity even stronger. The reward she asks the Queen for in exchange for completing the mission, is selfless of her, and benefits the other mages. The mission she is tasked with is nearly impossible, and is based only off theories, so it is possibly a mission that will only end in death. But literally everyone's lives depend on its success.

I enjoyed getting to know Urim's character more as well, while he starts off as a rather emotionless character, we learn so much about him in this story, and why he keeps his emotions so in check. I love his willingness to also do whatever it takes to succeed in the mission. Including giving Adara something that will increase her likelihood of weakening Lord Grazrath enough that he will hopefully be able to be killed. Urim is so good at keeping his outer and inner emotions in check, he even is able to prevent Adara from feeling anything negative while he is tortured as a blood slave to one of the vampires of Barakrin.

Amongst all the action and torture, this story has lots of spice! I mean, you can't be going on a mission that is very likely to end in your death, without having some spicy time with your hated jailor. And add to that the orc Sibilance, which enhances orgasms, and there is just no better way to pass the time.

This story is a must read to see how Urim and Adara's hate towards each other, turns out!

Fav Quotes:
"'Get up, Adara," he says in his silky smooth voice. I hate that I like his voice so much, after everything he's done to me."

"But though she is no longer as angry as she once was, she still has her spirit. I would almost be impressed if it didn't also exasperate me."

"'Say, 'yes commander'" I say, and again I don't recognize my voice, so deep is my thrum and desire. I crave her obediance."

"I growl with approval at her submission and bring my fingers lower, toward her opening."

"Mine, whispers my Mating instinct again."

"Good Female"

"It is like I'm being shattered and remade all at once, it's so intense. I've never experienced a climax as forceful as this, my mind almost whiting out in sensation."

"'How do you reply to me, hellion?" he asks. "Yes, commander," I breathe out. "I'll take you like a good female.'"

"'If I could, I would allow a hundred worlds to burn to keep you safe.'"

I seriously love this author and her writing style. This was more smutty than her other books and I was here for it!

An "emotionless" orc and a hot-headed mage walk into a forest...it made me think of WoW and want to go play Guild Wars immediately. This was fun and exciting at once.

Disclaimer: Having not read the first 3 books in this series, I probably missed some things that carried over but it didn't distract from the story at all. I do now want to read the first three in the series so I think that's a win!

This was the first book of this series I’ve read, even though it’s the fourth. However, I understood everything pretty easily. I really enjoyed this book because of how it’s a true ememies to lovers book at its core. Adara and Urim’s hate, banter and connection really drew me in and I needed more which is why I was so hooked! I also enjoyed the similarities between them, how they tried to stay apart but due to what happened they couldn’t. The spice at the first half of the book wasn’t loved filled, but it was still passionate which I enjoyed. I’m going to add the rest of this series to my tbr because I enjoyed everything - the world building and how raw and real everyones intentions and feelings are.

I was kindly provided with this book (censorship is BS and I hate it but here we are!)

This series is one of my favourites ever I . I’m a sucker for an orc romance, and the characters and ways the author writes these stories? I’m enraptured the whole time.

This one for tropes (though you definitely read books 1-3 first) are: enemies to lovers, mating of convenience, they’re on a deadly quest, hurt/comfort. Forced proximity.
Smut was 2.5/5 on the spice scale and it’s a HEA in a series of interconnected standalones.

I truly am so happy I got an ARC of this book. I devoured books 1-3 (recommend reading those first!) and then when i realised ARC sign ups were open?? I jumped on it. I absolutely love the dynamics in these books; the rough vs the soft, the grumpy vs the fake cheerful, the varying levels of trauma.. I’m obsessed. These characters were so fated to be together, so perfectly matched in every way, even when they were at odds.. I adored them.

Whew, talk about an enemies-to-lovers romance! And if you're used to the MMC being the bad guy, well you'd be pleasantly surprised that in this book it's the other way around. Adara is vengeful, furious, and hell-bent on exacting payback for sins made against her fellow mages in the previous war between humans and orcs. So she attempts to assassinate the royals she believes are to be blamed for the untimely deaths of her friends. She fails in this endeavor, and is then held prisoner for her crime. It is then the King's Shield, Urim, who is tasked to extract information from her in the hopes of determining if Adara is working with yet others sympathetic to her cause.

As the kingdom is under the threat of a much more vicious evil, Queen Adalind offers Adara a mission that will grant her clemency if she succeeds. The offer is made to her as Adara is the closest they have come to finding the one with the power they need to defeat the archdemon that is their greatest enemy at the moment. Knowing that it is a choice between death and possible freedom, Adara agrees.

So Adara and Urim embark on a harrowing journey into the lair of the archdemon. Along the way, they endure a battle of wits, a growing attraction, and a burgeoning respect that becomes harder and harder to deny.

As I did with the other previous books in the War Brides of Adrik series, I'd enjoyed this book immensely for its plot, romance, characters, and heartrending action. With each book in the series, we meet characters who are uniquely their own. In this book especially, the main characters could not be any more different: Urim exercises great control of his emotions and is guided heavily by logic in his decision-making, whereas Adara is intensely emotional and volatile, her actions early in the book fueled by her need for revenge. But as they journey on and face together challenges along the way, they get to see a side of each other that slowly cracks the walls they've built. Mutual trust then slowly ensues, and that becomes a pivotal game-changer for the deadly mission they've taken on.

Reading this entire book was such a thrill ride. And just when I'd reached the end and think that a happy ever after is finally in place, I find out that more is yet to come. More excitingly, a love story involving a character I never thought would be placed in the spotlight is actually going to be in the next book in the series!

I am thankful to the author for granting me a free review copy of this book. This review is given voluntarily.

✨✨✨ War Mage by Jordyn Alexander (@authorjordyn), is the fourth book in her War Brides of Adrik series, but it can be read as a standalone. ✨✨✨

Tropes:
⚔️ Chained together
⚔️ Romantasy
⚔️ Brat / Brat tamer
⚔️ Forced proximity
⚔️ He falls first
⚔️ Strong FMC
⚔️ Enemies to lovers
⚔️ Mating of Convenience
⚔️ On a Quest
⚔️ Hurt/Comfort
⚔️ Scarred hero
⚔️ Orphaned Heroes

Some books leave you thinking about their characters long after you’ve turned the last page—this is one of them. The heart of this story lies in the powerful dynamic between Urim and Adara, two warriors forged by their painful pasts but unwilling to let their scars define them. Their bravery and resilience shine through as they fight for a greater purpose, putting everything on the line to stop a demon from destroying their world.

Both characters have suffered in different ways, yet their determination pushes them forward. Their journey is filled with emotional depth, moments of tension, and an undeniable sense of duty. Their battles aren't just external—they wrestle with their pasts, their own doubts, and the weight of their decisions.

While this story isn’t spicy, it’s packed with raw emotion—revenge, hatred, love, and passion woven into an unforgettable adventure. It pulls you in with powerful storytelling and a narrative that keeps you deeply engaged, making it impossible not to root for these characters.

As the fourth book in the series, *War Mage* continues to build on the incredible world Jordyn Alexander has created. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next! If you love fantasy with strong, fearless protagonists and a storyline that keeps you invested, this series is a must-read.

Are you ready to dive into its world?

Quotes:
In the battle of wills between us, I will always win. Always.

“Say, ‘yes commander,’” I say, and again I don’t recognize my voice, so deep is my thrum and desire. I crave her obedience. “Yes, commander,” she breathes out, her breath tickling my neck.

Favorite line: "If I could, I would allow a hundred worlds to burn to keep you safe."

Tropes:

• Enemies to lovers
• Mating of Convenience
• Forced Proximity
• Orc x Witch
• High stakes mission

While Adara Flameborn strutted on the scene in book 1 of this series, she finally gets her own book. To Adara, her motivations were honorable--She would kill the Queen to avenge her fallen comrades, the ones who didn’t have a choice in the war. But when the assassination attempt on the Queen goes wrong, Adara finds herself imprisoned and under the control of the Kings Shield, Urim ka Churnok.

After months of questioning and living in a dingy cell, Adara is called upon by Queen Adalind. While Adara thinks she is finally being trialed and put to death, the Queen offers her a suicide mission in exchange for a favor. While Adara would rather die than work with the Queen, she see’s the potential freedom the exchange will bring her people.

Adara, a very rare fire mage, must work with her tormentor, Urim, an extremely disciplined and rigid orc, in a high stakes mission. Together they must travel to Barakin and destroy Lord Grazrath, an archdemon. This mission will cost her everything—her life, her soul, and maybe even her heart.

I love that Jordyn Alexander’s books never fail to bring a solid plot with romance. I had a little trouble getting into the characters in this book. I felt a strong disconnect between Urim in his POV and how he was perceived by Adara. Their connection felt off when their personalities counter each other: Adara a wild, emotional, limit pusher and Urim a calm, collected and logical Orc. They got there though; it just took a while. Exciting story. Solid entertainment. You’ll want to read in one sitting.

War Mage is another excellent entry in the War Brides of Adrik series. Rare and valuable fire mage Adara tried to assassinate Queen Adalind, blaming her for her former husband's mistake in starting the war and hating that she surrendered to the Orc nation. Adara knows that her magic is her best asset, and when she is taken to the queen with an ultimatum, she negotiates something worth fighting for: the true freedom of mages living in Adrik. She must go on a deadly mission accompanied by the Orc commander Urim, the Orc who has been torturing the truth out of her for weeks. Can they put aside their differences and save their shared countries?

I loved the chemistry between Adara and Urim! Their story is so different from the previous books, and I really like how it all came together. I enjoyed how slowly and carefully it is revealed how different and how similar they are. The spice is still spicy, and it starts early in this one, which I enjoyed. I love a slow burn for sure, but enemies to lovers, forced proximity, spy games, and a deadly quest, combined with the hurt/comfort dynamic, made for a fulfilling read.

Sidenote: There is now a certain prince whom I am just dying to get a book. He and other family members can start a whole side series as far as I am concerned. Just saying!

What a ride this book was! It started off strong and kept going with non stop action!

This is part of the War Brides of Adrik series, but enough back story is provided to read this as a standalone. But do read the rest of the series as it is very good.

Adara Flameborn is one of the sassiest, strongest female characters I've read. She is passionate about her cause - first to end the Queen, then to free the Mage's Tower. She is fearless, taking on an impossible mission to further her cause. She is vulnerable, orphaned at a young age and a bit adrift in life. She is a pawn, a fire mage that has a chance to make a difference in the world. She is mourning the loss of so many during the recent conflicts.

And then we have Urim, an orc who has a strong sense of honor. He is loyal to his king and queen. He is hardened by life as an orphan and a street urchin. He is emotionally cold to shield himself from further loss. He is brave, willing to put his life on the line for the greater good. He is a brilliant strategist who can think on his feet.

Urim is initially tasked as Adara's jailer, but soon finds himself in another role - as her mission partner and mate. The stakes are high, as is the cayenne level.

The story has so much drama and action, but there are still a few questions by the story's end..... I am definitely anticipating the next book!

I received an ARC from the author, thank you! I am leaving a voluntary review.

**

The story of Adara and Urim is packed full of action as these two set out for a mission to hopefully end the war that started in the previous book. But there is a big hurdle to overcome, as Adara has been held prisoner and interrogated by Urim while in captivity. Can the mage and the spymaster orc trust each other enough to successfully get through this mission?

The story moves fast but as is the nature of their mission, it fits the plot really well and we are treated to plenty of character growth as well. The author has a talent for managing to pull my heartstrings and this is no exception. Both Urim and Adara are strong characters with plenty of spark and managed easily to worm their way into my heart and their love story was worth the journey. These two complement each other well, and the emotion was crackling even when Urim tried to hide his emotions and desire (as a spymaster does).

We delve a little into darker waters with some of the themes in the book so some caution is warranted but there is a list of them at the beginning of the book. I didn't feel anything was too graphic but be warned that captor/captive plays a role in the book and there is some minor gore and branding.

The overall plot continued in this book and we are left with some questions as to where the kingdom will go next. I'm curious to see what comes of the next book in the series!

Because this was a monster romance, it was set in a fantasy world with far, orcs, vampires and mages. It’s been a while since I read a book with so many fantasy elements like world building (though most of that was in previous books) and taking down a corrupt leader (such a popular plot in fantasy). It was pretty dark though, like all the stuff about trafficking and blood slaves. I did like this plot, it was tense, I was really hooked and had just the right amount of plot twists (though let’s be honest rebellions are always in fantasy books). But I was honestly not expecting the little twist at the start that kind of set the romance up. It had amazing romance elements, an amazing enemies to lovers, honestly there was just tension between them at the start, it kinda all ended after they did it, but they still had lots of fun banter. My one problem is with Adara, she’s portrayed as such a sassy, strong, witty character but the decision she makes at the start (even though it sets up the whole plot) is so stupid and out of character. Yes I get she has a lot of loyalty but it just did not line up with her character as the book progresses. And I loved Urim, he’s that grumpy emotionless mmc who grows soft for the fmc and is also so possessive. Amazing smut, some dom/sub elements, and spanking so just a warning. I loved this, such a fun and exciting read, it’s a 4.5/5

War Mage is a steamy, fantasy romance that I couldn't put down. Its told in dual pov and follows the MCs Adara and Urim. This was such a great enemies to lovers story! I truly felt the hate! I enjoyed the world building, magic, adventurous mission, characters, and plot within this storyline. I was entertained and enjoyed this journey. Jordyn creates such great worlds and layered characters. The plot was well developed with action, adventure, angst, and gore. I enjoyed the character development and getting to know them more intimately. Adara is such a bada** and I luved her vibe. Urim is a grumpy orc who eventually won me over. He initially was very closed off which made me appreciate getting to know his faults and insecurities. This was another great series read which will have you saying yes to the Orc.

Themes & Tropes:

💚Enemies to Lovers
🤎Fated Mates
💛Magic Systems
🤎Revenge Plot
💚Orc MMC & Human FMC
💛Grumpy vs. Sassy

Features sensitive themes and content, so check triggers ⚠️

Overall, loved this read. ❤️ I can’t wait for the next book.

With her heart full of hate for the Queen she blames for the death of many friends during battle, Adara Flameborn watches silently with vengeance near at hand as Queen Adalind’s caravan approaches through the Undrian forest where she hides, and with War Mage the fourth book in author Jordyn Alexander’s War Brides of Adrik series, another engaging enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance unfolds.

When Adara’s plan fails and she is captured and imprisoned, she is left to be interrogated by the King and Queen’s Orc protector Urim ka Churnok, who faults himself for failing to learn of the plot in advance.

Adara will soon come to loathe Urim as much as his masters but when the Queen joins them in a mission together an attraction begins to form which changes everything.

Nicely written, with intrigue, magic, action, passion, and adventure expertly woven into the story, I enjoyed yet another passionate adventure within the heart of Adrik and its wonderfully imagined world. HEA

Thoughts:
I loved this monster fantasy romance! Picture a human mage and an orc spymaster, undercover to take down a demon. There was lots of action, intrigue and a pretty well paced plot. The romance built slowly as they travelled together and their love grew. With the mate bond, lots of sp@nking, and some other Domin@nce play, the book got super spicy. I also loved the action scenes that came with the quest to defeat the demon. You don’t have to read all the other books in this series, but they have all been great fantasy adventures with an orc and human coupling.

The book seemed interesting from the beginning, but as the events developed, disasters began.
Adara was filled with hatred and anger and desperately wanted to take revenge on her enemies, but she failed. Up until now, I was excited, but when things started getting exciting, Adara transformed into something else. She confessed everything, even her secrets, from the very first interrogation.
Urim's character seemed more robotic, with no feelings or emotions, which made the interaction between the two MCs nonexistent and limited to fulfilling urgent sensory needs only. There was no chemistry between them, and even when the hero was subjected to torture, Adara only expressed concern, no tears nothing.
The mission was to eliminate the monster who wanted to destroy the world, even if it cost the lives of Adara and Urim. But at the crucial moment, instead of things turning into more drama, the event became devoid of value and the mission became trivial.
The two heroes ran away to save their lives, simply leaving the end of the mission to someone else, which is really unfortunate.

I did the old college try. I told myself that I needed to keep reading. It would get better. But I got to the point of no return when a third POV was thrown in and it was 10000% unnecessary.

Characters read flat.

Urim is giving Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s clueless. Acts like he is all valor and loyalty.

I even wrote a note at one point about how he spent over an entire page just talking about how confused Adara is making him feel. Like just get to the point, you wanna fuxk her dude.

Adara gives very immature and not very relatable. She also jumps at the chance to get fuxked by Urim very very easily. Like I’m not one to slut shame but damn at least make him work for it. And then she’s also magically naked. There’s no build up. No tension.

I think it has the ability to be good but it needs to be reworked.

Gave it 2 stars because I didn’t finish it. I hope it gets better, I just can’t force myself to get there.

War Mage is book 4 in the War Brides of Adrik series by Jordyn Alexander. In the true style of this amazing author, this book can be read as a standalone, but I encourage you to read the series as a whole because the plotlines cross.

War mage tells the story of the Mage Adara and the Orc Urim. Two characters that start as real enemies but by destiny and forced proximity get a bond that is built to last if it gets a change.

I loved this book, the strong-willed FMC and an MMC that looks unemotional and untouchable but has a soft core. And not to speak about the banter oh the amazing, satisfying banter❤️❤️

So, if you are looking for a book (or series) with strong-willed FMC and MMC that like to think they are Alpha but, in fact, are the most caring yet ruthlessly protective MMC'S. Then this series is just of you!!

Another great story from this world! Adara was fighting with nothing left to lose, and Urim was her emotionless jailer. The two are sent on a mission that they may not make it back from. To strengthen Adara's power, Urim bonds to her, but he doesn't expect his mating instinct to take control. I loved the grumpy x grumpy dynamic between these two reluctant allies and their physical-turned-emotional connection. Getting their story was another piece of the Adrik puzzle, and I loved returning to this world. Urim, with his unique brand of control and his bratty mate that gives him another reason to exert that control, were a key component in the story's progression. He sure knows how to make Adara's soul sing, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two enemies fall deep in love. Plus, seeing other characters from the world who have become familiar faces was great. I can't wait for the next story!

I can't believe how good this book was! I was a little worried I would get bored of the romance aspect as the series went on thinking each book would be the same but that could not be farther from the truth. Each book in the series is just getting better and better, the additional world building in each one, adventures in different counties, the introduction of new races and the ability to give evey character their own unique back story and plot...even the ones I thought were villains, even the misguided ones. I felt this one was a lot darker in the themes it explored and the spice was spicing!! I'm am definitely a fan of a Dom/Sum mating oh convience.

The bonus epilogue had me sobbing happy tears for a character I initially did not like in the begining....I am such a sucker for a redemption arc

Eh, I didn't like this one all that much. Objectively I liked both MCs. I found their dynamic interesting but I didn't find their relationship particularly fascinating either.

The series' overarching plot was very heavy in this one. So much so that more than five chapters (I believe) was spent with Adara and Urim simply riding as hostages in the back of a dark wagon. While it gave them the chance to bond and actually get to know one another it felt like it dragged for me. It killed all momentum of the story imo.

And while their relationship was sorta cute and they did seem like ideal mates for one another I personally felt this sort of disconnect with their whole brat/brat tamer dynamic. It felt a little too forced in the latter half of the story tbh.

Otherwise it was simply an alright but forgettable read.

Okay

First let me say that I loved, LOVED book 1 the War Queen, to this day I still consider the FMC to be one of the best ones ever written in a romantacy book.

Such high hopes for this one but I skimmed most of it. I didn't care much for Adara or Urim.
I don't mind mild BDSM spanking, etc but I hate when it's in every scene as if its only way these 2 can ever get off, I want my MMC to be so in lust for the FMC that he forgets himself or loses his mind for her & I just didnt feel that way about these 2 at all.
If he's got the ability to control himself, control her orgasms & control his ability to "punish' her by making her count her spankings, then is he even " into it" or totally gone? Didn't seem so .

This is one of my favorite series. I can always count on a thrilling adventure with incredibly memorable MCs. This book was no exception! The FMC was intelligent and fearless. The MMC was noble and caring. The writing and storytelling was outstanding. I could not put this book down. Although the books in the series are all standalone for sure each story builds on each other and move the main plot along so well. I would highly recommend this book and series. This story had an epic quest, magic, action, intrigue, romance and a nice dose of spice. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end! Thank you for the advance review copy

This is book 4 in the War Brides of Adrik series ( Go read the previous three, each is standalone but interconnected)

What I loved:- True enemies to lovers story. Good character development. Magic, action and suspense all interwoven into a love story. Inner monologues of both the MMC (Urim) and the FMC (Adara) was captivating/intriguing. The dilemma they faced drew them closer and they both grew together as time passed.
My peeve was the abrupt ending to the mission (no spoilers), but still a good ending.
Looking forward to more in this series ( Book 3 is still my favorite).

I received an ARC from the author via Book Sirens and this is a voluntary review

love the banter

**Spoiler alert!!**

Love the banter between the fiery FMC and the Stoic MMC. Great addition to the overall story arc of the series.

Love how the BBEG is impotent. Those who love causing others pain are always compensating for feeling impotent one way or another and he is definitely literally and physically impotent and compensating! Good on Pellia for getting her last swipe in during war mistress!

I enjoyed War Mage so very much! The world-building is complex and intriguing. I also enjoyed the journey Urim the orc and Adara were making from enemies who really hated each other to lovers. Adara is brave and strong and Urim has this quiet strength. He is determined to succeed in the mission to save the kingdom. The story kept me in suspense entirely. I find it engaging, thrilling and very imaginative.

I really just ate this book up. I love a good romantasy. This was a great addition to the series. The main characters chemistry really gave, “opposites attract” and I think that is what made me like their relationship even more. This was a real enemies to lovers book. The spice was REALLY good. I can honestly say I’m loving this series more with every book.
