Sage's Sanctuary #0.5

The Quiet Side

Rate this book
She’s always flying toward the next shiny idea. He’s resolve incarnate—literally.
Now they're stuck together in an isolated mountain cottage with only one bed.

When Kovan, the strongest living avatar of a god, is tasked with removing a magical field preventing priests from wreaking destruction unchecked, he defects, leaving behind everything he knew for the sanctuary of the Quiet side.

Alone for the first time and unable to work the magic that has defined his life, Kovan finds Tasa, who has made her home on the mountain at the Quiet's heart and knows about everything—unlike Kovan, who no longer knows how to do anything that matters, from baking bread to protecting her, let alone the Quiet side.

Tasa takes Kovan in despite the risk to her safe haven because no matter how his belief in her makes her feel, Kovan isn't staying. No one ever does, and he'll have more important places to be once he learns to stand on his own.

But when the priests come looking for Kovan, the sanctuary they're creating one loaf of bread at a time is at risk… unless they can discover their real strength together.

The Quiet Side is a stand-alone steamy cozy fantasy romance with grumpy x sunshine vibes in the world of Sage's Sanctuary, where the most powerful and vulnerable alike find refuge in an isolated mountain cottage with only one bed. Sage's Sanctuary is full of dragon encounters, awkward romance and tender moments, building community and having each other's backs, and finding who you are, what you stand for, and how to use your voice.

“The weak infrastructure in Crystal Hollow isn’t because of the shattered buildings; the shattered buildings merely reveal the weak infrastructure.”

A lovely and cosy romantasy novella. Although I couldn’t always fully grasp what was going on (which made it a bit harder to connect to the story) the writing style was fresh and different which I appreciated.

I didn’t feel a bone-deep, earth-shattering connection to the characters, but this is a terribly hard thing for short stories to achieve. There were some adorable moments between Tasa and Kovan, especially the way he cared for her from the offset. I’m not usually a fan of insta love, but it didn’t make me cringe in this, and that one smut scene was unexpectedly… really good?

“I more than simply like you, Tasa,” Kovan says. “Allow me to show you how much.”

This had all the makings of a cozy romantasy novella but…I just didn’t get it 👀 my expectations were too high!

Kovan is a sage that escapes his oppressive guides and now has to try to survive ’magicless’ in the wild. Well not really because he stumbles on an adorable lopsided cottage with a pretty girl inside. She teaches him how to make bread & he stands up for her. COZY MOMENTS and budding love! 💗

He was the Sage of Resolve and I still have no idea what that means. He was resolved to his magical ability, resolved to not be a burden, resolved to break a unity, resolved to resolve in the future…WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

The writing style or maybe even the sentence structure was a bit….different. Not sure if it was missing a bunch of commas but I had to reread every other sentence, which really distracted me from the plot. The start was especially rough with a bunch of unfamiliar terms thrown at you to a point where I thought I skipped the initial chapter.

Surprisingly good smutty scenes though!

A lovely romantasy novella in which two passionate, ethical people who think of themselves as failures can both clearly see each other’s strengths - and become something even better when they come together. ❤️ I love the way Casey Blair writes neurodivergent protagonists in her romantasies, and although this prequel story works just fine as a standalone, I'm now really looking forward to the main series!

The opening chapters were initially captivating, but the heavy emphasis on domestic roles and identity became a bit overwhelming with Kovan internalizing a sense of inadequacy compared to Tasa's perceived competence.

Where was the magic? The story hints at a world brimming with magical possibilities, but these elements remain largely implied rather than actively explored. This is undoubtedly a cozy fantasy romance. However, its exploration of gender roles feels stereotypical, rather than a fresh or insightful take.

3.75 ⭐⭐⭐✨ Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC

This is a darling little book. It's short enough to read in a day, and would make a lovely palate cleanser between longer series or more emotionally intense books, which is how I tend to use cozy fantasy.

The characters are adorable. They are clearly both deeply wounded people who make each other better. It's a little cliche in that Tasa is your classic manic pixie dreamgirl and Kovan is your stoic protector who discovers what joy is thanks to her.

I am rounding up to a 4 because as a prequel, I think the length and depth of this book are appropriate. If it were a stand-alone, maybe not. the world-building was enough to understand what was happening, but could really have use more fleshing out. The relationship was 100% insta love, which honestly, could benefit still from more interaction and just straight up CONTENT to be more believable. Also, this book is clearly meant to be a statement on neurodivergence, and while that can be healing and inclusive, it leaned a little bit heavy on it, to the point that the specific character didn't have much personality outside of her neurodivergence.

Overall, definitely worth a read. It had me smiling basically all throughout, and had a surprising moment of great 🌶️.

OMG

I’M DYING, THIS WAS SO FREAKING AMAZING

First of all, I’m absolutely obsessed!!!!! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read this arc!

The plot of this book is so amazingly well written.

The characters were so relatable and adorably cute and perfect for each other. I cannot wait to read the next part of this series!

I also absolutely adore the atmosphere and the coziness of this book, so I hope the next books will be as cozy, cute, adorable and have amazingly lovable characters as this one had.

Honestly, even though I hate comparing books and this one honestly doesn’t have many similarities to Legends and Lates I feel like if you’ve read that you will definitely enjoy this one, just because the vibes and the coziness are the same. However I must say that this book feels kind of cozier than Legends and lates.

Overall, if you enjoy cozy fantasy you should definitely check out this one, because this might be the coziest one I’ve read so far.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, so please please please, read it. I’ll seating on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one.

Thanks so much NetGalley for the opportunity to read this Arc!!! 💕💕

So cute! The Quiet Side is an adorable cozy fantasy. I’ll admit it took me a little while to get used to the writing style and fully invest in the story. But once I was in, I was all in.

The MMC is the Sage of Resolve. He’s tasked with something that shakes his resolve, and when given the chance to leave the priesthood, he takes it. Along the way, he meets the FMC, a neurodivergent null who is the town outcast.

Together, they work to find a solution to both of their problems.

The Quiet Side is a prequel to an upcoming fantasy trilogy, and I’m so excited to learn more about the Sage of Wrath and a certain dragon.

Thank you to NetGalley, Casey Blair, and Victory Editing for the arc in exchange for an honest and timely review!

⭐ 3.75/5

The Quiet Side is a cozy fantasy with an intense, immediate romance. The presence of dragons adds a charming touch — and honestly, who doesn’t love dragons?

I enjoyed the gentle writing and the idea of the island setting, but I felt like some elements needed more depth. Since this is a prequel, I understand that some things are left open, but I would’ve appreciated more development around Kovan — especially considering he’s on a journey to rediscover his faith. Also, while the romance is central, I didn’t quite feel the chemistry between him and Tasa.

A map and a glossary would have really enhanced the experience, particularly to help understand the sages, the powers, and the priests better. The world is interesting, but I felt a bit lost at times.

Still, the sneak peek at the end made me excited to see where the trilogy goes from here!

Resolve. A strong word, and a powerful character trait. To be able to reach decisions firmly, decisively. To have that as a Divine Power... the things one could accomplish. Make or break wars. Build or tear down walls. Start or end revolutions. But... what about when your Power is controlled by others? What is resolve when it has never been your own?

When an avatar of a god, the Sage of Wrath, revolts by erecting a magical barrier, resulting in a magical dampening field known now as The Quiet Side in which she hides, the priesthood sends its most powerful Sage, Kovan of Resolve, to undo her work. But as Kovan finds himself sympathetic to Wrath's rebellion, his resolve wavers, rendering him without the power to do what he was sent to do. A dragon in human form walks up to meet him, realizing this Sage is on a personal precipice. The dragon offers to fly him into The Quiet Side. Kovan realizes the moment his Resolve faltered, he'd already made that decision: “Please.”

Meanwhile, Tasa makes her way back up to her crooked little cabin on a mountain, and discovers a handsome stranger in her little sanctuary. She's shocked to learn he's a harmless Sage who has no place to go, but even more shocked to discover this man has a grand total of zero basic life skills. Well... she figures he can help her by learning to bake bread, and she can teach him the way of life. Thus begins a sweet cozy fantasy novella, the prequel of a forthcoming series.

I went into this a bit blind. Of course I'd done a bit of research into the author, Casey Blair, and figured her work would be a good match with what I usually read. So I was excited to pick this up. But I wanted to let myself be surprised, and novellas are a perfect way to get acquainted with a new-for-me author.

The Quiet Side is absolutely wonderful, an endearing appetizer. My experiences with cozy fantasy as a genre have been a bit of a mixed bag. Often the stakes are low, but... too low, the emphasis put on a cute atmosphere. I do need at least medium stakes in order for a book to be enjoyable, no matter how lovely and quirky the smells and lighting and seasons and cinnamon buns are. The Quiet Side has that balance I need: the plot is exciting (chapter one immediately sucked me in) while the overall approach to the story still makes it something I consider a comfort read.

Kovan's crisis of faith has consequences that they have to deal with: Casey Blair doesn't just let him hide away from the priests and be done with it.

The cozy here is found in their interactions rather than descriptions of comfortable surroundings, and it just works so well for me. Yes, Kovan learns to bake bread, and that's adorable in and of itself, but it's the way he's incredibly gentle with his female host, as she navigates her neurodivergent traits, that has me feeling all sorts of fuzzy. Probably because I have ADHD myself. I feel so validated by how Kovan lifts Tasa up and makes her feel capable, valuable – it's nice to read a fictional story that's enjoyable, and at the same time makes a reader feel very much seen and understood by the author. Tasa in turn swoons over him, but is very much her own person, and despite him being a Divine Avatar, there's absolutely no skewed power dynamic. Their romance is quick, but that's to be expected in a novella and very much fine because it's done convincingly. These characters understand each other and communicate well, and it makes sense for them to have a deep connection quickly. A bit of spice (also welcome in a cozy fantasy!) solidifies their chemistry. (And it's gooooood spice, too.)

I would have liked a little more clarity on the Sage system itself. I have a lot of questions about the gods, other sages, their powers and the Priesthood. But I expect that to come up later and my interest is peaked. Prequel novella mission accomplished! Gimme more!

The prequel of course also functions to give us a preview of the upcoming series' protagonists: the dragon and the (only mentioned for now) Sage of Wrath. The Quiet Side doesn't spend too much time on them, but gives us a taste by subtly hinting to there being more between the two of them that I can't wait to explore in Sage's Sanctuary's first full novel. If their romance is as well put together and swoonworthy as the whirlwind romance between Kovan and Tasa, with THEIR limited word count... we're going to be in for a lovely multiple full-length book romantasy ride when the first installment comes out in 2026!

This is a nice, cozy fantasy, well written, and so easy to read. Both our main characters have their own issues, and they try and teach each other that they are worth way more than the outside world makes them feel. They are sweet but the book has some spice in as well.

I just wanted a bit more ... actual story. Yes, there is a storyline, but most of the book is our main character, Kovan, trying to convince Tasa that she is special even without magic. I understand this is a prequel, but still....

Great romantic fantady adventure

Tasa is different, but her differences make her more loveable, fascinating, and talented. Kovan makes an impulsive choice that changes everything and gives him an interesting purpose. The story is wonderful, although I'm not a fan of insta-love. I'm disappointed the series won't follow their story, but I'm looking forward to reading Yora and Zan's adventures.

Ooooh yes. As a cosy fantasy reader, I’m saying yes please!
It wasn’t quite 5 stars for me because as someone who’s neurodivergent, sometimes the obviousness of it made it a bit less enjoyable. I love when we know a character is different and what struggles arise but if it’s too much of a focal point (without being the plot) it kinda makes me feel a bit like it’s being tokenized? (Idk if it’s wrong word)
I cannot wait to have more from this author though!!! I did like the spicy bits, cozy fantasy doesn’t have much of that so I’m always appreciative of it.

3.5 stars rounded up

With dragons, magic, and corruption comes conflict, yet this cozy fantasy prequel focuses on growth and healing instead of the darker side of power struggles. If you're needing a dose of positivity, this is a quick and easy read that will leave you feeling hopeful.

Kovan is the Sage of Resolve, but his sense of self crumbles when faced with a task that doesn't seem quite right. After escaping with the help of Zan, a powerful dragon, he is left full of doubt and without any understanding of how the world truly works. Luckily, he meets Tasa, an ADHD coded character who is fighting her own issues with self worth and healthy boundaries. Together, they might just figure things out...

This is a love at first sight story, and while it definitely feels a little rushed and shallow at points, I didn't really mind as it was so sweet and genuinely uplifting. Yes, it's saccharine. Yes, it's overly simplifying the daily battles of ADHD. Yes, the plot is basically nonexistent. But it is such a lovely experience all the same.

I will say the switch to the spicy scene 75% in felt really jarring. It was as if it belonged to a totally different book. I like how it fed into both of their worries though and helped build further trust in one another.

I'm intrigued to see what the new series will be about and how it will develop. I'm curious about the world as a whole as the power dynamics between the priests, dragons, and 'normal' people were hinted at and seem a bit complicated. I also can't wait to see the relationship between Zan and Yara - and hopefully there are continued appearances from Tasa and Kovan too as I really liked their characters!

🌿 The Quiet Side is a gentle, very short novella (about 107 pages) that serves as a small window into Casey Blair’s Sage’s Sanctuary world — a cozy fantasy with dragons, sages (living avatars of the gods), and a quiet cottage where magic has been muted.

I really enjoyed the initial atmosphere: the opening felt promising, with a sense of magic and the brink of a world-shattering tragedy. Sage Kovan is an intriguing character — a resigned yet caring figure who finds unexpected refuge with Tasa, a sunshine soul who brings warmth into his grumpy world. I liked the symbolic gestures of care — bread, shared meals, small domestic moments that give the story its cozy foundation.

The worldbuilding is intriguing — sages, priests, dragons, sanctuaries — but with so few pages, some details and plot threads remained a bit unclear, and I felt many questions were left unanswered. I believe that’s intentional, as this novella acts more like a small glimpse into the upcoming series rather than a full standalone.

However, I feel the story struggled with pacing: for such a short novella, it’s hard to fully develop a slow-burn romance and deep worldbuilding. Some transitions felt abrupt, and the tone sometimes shifted from lyrical to too modern, which occasionally broke my immersion.

Still, the idea of the Quiet Side (and the cottage) — a haven of stillness, love, and second chances — is touching and resonates with what I love about cozy fantasy: a gentle retreat from the world. I wish the one-bed trope and the chemistry had more room to develop, as they lacked the emotional depth we often seek in Romantasy, but I see it as a promising start for the full series. I’d love to see these characters and this world explored further.

✨ This novella is a short yet tender glimpse at a magical sanctuary — perfect if you want a bite-sized, romantic, and cozy read with dragons, bread, and hope.

⭐️ Rating: 3 stars
🌶️ Spice level: 1.5 out of 5

I’m so conflicted with this one — what typically would’ve taken me a day to finish, took me a few days because I couldn’t connect with the writing or the story itself.

It was a short read with two MCs who didn’t believe in themselves but they believed in each other and managed to build a life together in a cozy little cottage while learning how to bake bread and other forms of survival. There’s a dragon, sages, priests and orbs of magic. It’s sweet and can feel a bit like a warm blanket on a rainy day type of read but also came across awkward to me. The romance bit wasn’t there for me, giving that the entire timeline of this was all within a day of meeting but I’m hoping their story gets a bit more love and attention in the next books of the planned trilogy.

💌 Thank you NetGalley, Casey Blair & Victory Editing for the eARC!

This was a cutesy cozy read, however it didn't lure me in as I would've liked. Everything just felt superficial to me, and I didn't connect with our main characters much. Also, the way the conflict with the priest is handled seemed childish, too idealistic — it felt like there were no stakes, and what was wrong was spontaneously resolved (I know that was the beginning of a big change, but I would've liked for there to have been more resistance in the discussion). Same thing with their work in town it just felt shallow.

The characters felt like they lacked personality. Tasa. On the other hand, Kovan

The romance front was weak as well. Why are they just drooling for each other since the second they meet? It would've felt okay in a different situation, but not when . There was no moment of true yearning or an actual relationship build-up.

However, there were two quotes that stood out to me and that gave me a little bit of resolve (wink). Could I say that made the read worth it? Yes, I think so. What can I say? I just like collecting phrases here and there.

Those were:

“I dont’t wan to leave you. I don’t know how I can stay. I don’t know how I can make your life better, but I am trying, and I will keep trying, as long as I am not making it worse for you, I want to stay with you.” —Kovan—

“Resolve is different. Resolve is steady. Resolve is continual. Resolve is putting in time even when it feels unsatisfying in the moment, because it’s not about the moment.” —Kovan—

A Gentle, Thoughtful Beginning to a Promising Fantasy Series

“The Quiet Side” is a beautifully written novella; a quiet, introspective introduction to the world of The Sages Sanctuary. Set in a realm ruled by a powerful priesthood who channel the power of the gods through human vessels, the story offers a fresh take on magic, faith, and the abuse of belief.

At its heart are two unlikely companions: Kovan, the sage of resolve, who has lost his conviction in the system he once served, and realizes though he is blessed with a god‘s power, yet unable to cook or care for himself; and Tasa, a free-spirited void—born without magic and shunned for it—who lives alone in her self-built cottage in the remnants of a sanctuary where magic has been silenced.
When their paths cross, what begins as a cautious coexistence slowly turns into mutual healing. Each sees in the other strengths, which they deny to recognize in themselves. Their growing bond, shaped by small moments of trust, is tender and real—rooted not so much in dramatic declarations but in baking bread and daring to sow seeds for the future.

The novella is calm and cozy, with a grounded emotional core and a surprisingly hopeful undercurrent despite the themes of disillusionment and isolation. The prose is reflective and comforting without being overwrought, and the pacing lets the world breathe just enough to intrigue without overwhelming.

As a series opener, it succeeds in sparking curiosity—particularly about the deeper magic system, the lore behind the sages, and, yes, the appearance of a certain dragon. I’m very much looking forward to picking up the next installment and seeing how this quiet sanctuary grows into something more.

If you’re looking for a soft entry into a larger fantasy world, The Quiet Side is worth the read.

Thank you so much for providing me with an arc copy of this book in return for an honest review! I'm truly excited to see where this series will move forward to in the future and would love to be able to be an arc reader for any of your future work!

I will say - at the start of this book it seemed very much almost like the Kovan and Tasa were obsessed with each other rather than just curious and intrigued by each other which was slightly off-putting. They have the habit of being very accepting of each other and then very quickly turn a sharp corner and becoming almost enraged by each other which seemed a little strange in my opinion.
Other than this, I found Kovan and Tasa to be unexpectedly relatable! Kovan himself being almost an embodiment of resolve and problem solving but seeming to struggle so much which his place in the world and his ability/willingness to make his own opinions is something I often see in myself so it was super interesting to see how this impacted him/his actions and how he works through this during the book. Meanwhile, Tasa seems to be the complete opposite - even if not by choice - being completely independent to the point where letting other people in to help is seen as only a sign of weakness for her.
It was so fun to see these characters see so many beautiful things about each other while being unable to see the beautiful parts of themselves and then seeing the start of their journey to unravel these negative thoughts about themselves with each other.

Of course, not to mention, the cosy setting mixed with the presence of dragons?? how could you even go wrong there, I loved it!!
Super super excited to see where we go with the future books in this series, I'm intrigued to see if it stays as cosy as this novella or if we step out more into more dangerous territory. All I know is, I'll be there to read it!

This book is a cinnamon roll wrapped in emotional damage wrapped in a mountain cottage with one bed and the world’s most earnest attempts at baking.

Tasa is my favorite kind of heroine: chill on the outside, emotionally bracing herself for abandonment on the inside, deeply competent except at baking. She lives quietly at the heart of the Quiet Side, sipping tea and enjoying her slice of peace. And then Kovan shows up - grumpy, lost, ex-god-man with an existential crisis.

Their chemistry?? Immediately unhinged, in the best way. Insta-love is so hard to pull off, but Blair NAILS IT. Kovan’s all like “I was the living avatar of a god” and Tasa’s like “Cool, can you bake this loaf without setting the house on fire?” and the man just decides that baking bread for her forever is his new religion. ICONIC BEHAVIOR.

The vibes are soft and intimate, even with the looming threat of sagely doom. Every loaf of bread is a love letter. Every awkward moment is a trust fall. Every time Kovan looks at Tasa like she personally hung the moon? I spontaneously combusted.

Also: the worldbuilding?? Subtle but rich. Imagine a war-torn world with messy politics but instead of saving it with swords and speeches, we’re baking bread, making tea, and building community one awkward conversation at a time. The stakes are lowkey high and the emotional payoff??? Chef’s kiss.

Also cannot WAIT to see more of Zan and the Sage of Wrath in The Quiet Light, this novella has me hooked and ready to stay in this little world!

Things I loved:
🥖 Baking as emotional healing
⚔️ A man who gives up power to become a himbo househusband
🌿 Magic that’s about boundaries, not explosions
👀 Quiet pining and “no one ever stays” angst

Overall?? Adorable, tender, and emotionally satisfying.

I’ll be honest, when I first started the book, the dynamic between Kovan and Tasa felt a bit much. Their immediate intensity came off more like obsession than curiosity, which made it harder to ease into their connection. They’d flip from mutual admiration to sharp-edged conflict so fast it gave me whiplash. That emotional whiplash wasn’t always believable, but then again, relationships aren't always tidy.
That said, once I settled in, I found myself unexpectedly drawn to both of them. Kovan, with all his quiet strength and practical thinking, felt like the embodiment of control, except when it came to figuring out where he fit in the world. Watching him wrestle with the weight of other people’s expectations versus his own voice felt deeply personal. I’ve been there. It hit.
Then there's Tasa, stubborn, independent, almost allergic to vulnerability. She’s so used to surviving on her own that accepting help feels like weakness. And yet, it’s in that hardened exterior that we see her unravel, slowly, beautifully.
What really made their story shine for me wasn’t the drama or the romance, but the raw, almost painful way they saw the best in each other, while being completely blind to those same qualities in themselves. There’s something tender about that, something real. Watching them begin to unpack those old, self-inflicted wounds together was honestly my favorite part.
And I haven’t even mentioned the setting, dragons and cozy vibes? That combination is an absolute win. You get softness wrapped in scales and fire, and somehow, it works.
I’m seriously looking forward to the rest of the series. Will it stay safe and soft? Or are we headed for darker skies? Either way, I’m buckled in, I won’t be missing a page.

This was a really intriguing preview of what's to come in the larger universe the author is building. It introduces one of the main characters from an upcoming trilogy set 500 years in the future, and now I’m even more curious to see how the events in this story will tie into the next series.

I’ll admit, I had to reread the first few pages to get a handle on who the priests, sages, and mentors were and how they all fit into the world. But once I understood, I was hooked.

Both Kovan and Tasa were compelling characters. Tasa’s guilt over her null ability and how it affected her village made her feel isolated and alone, while Kovan’s sense of duty to the empire brought its own internal conflict. Both characters felt torn between obligation and finding out how they fit in. It was really sweet seeing them learn to lean on each other and be their own cheerleaders. I’m usually not a fan of insta-love because I prefer seeing the relationship grow naturally but in this story, Blair managed to pull it off. Kovan and Tasa's self-awareness about how quickly their feelings were developing—and their willingness to admit how unusual that was—is something rarely acknowledged in fantasy romances, which made it especially refreshing.

If this is just the starting point, I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds in the full trilogy. Definitely a solid setup with lots of potential.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

When the Sage of Wrath creates a magical dampening field, Kovan, the Sage of Resolve finds himself in the Quiet when he puts his trust in a Dragon. He is completely lost as he has no experience in taking care of himself and doesn’t know how to perform even the most basic of tasks, leaving him feeling hopeless and useless, which is in direct contrast to his magic. Luckily, he finds refuge with a Null named Tasa who is willing him to teach him how to survive in this new world.

Tasa has her own insecurities, as a Null she is without magic and nullifies magic around her, making her an outcast in this world. But with the dampening effect place on the island by the Sage of Wrath, she has an advantage for the first time and with her generous spirit she willingly offers to teach Kovan how to fend for himself.

I am torn about this book, while is a sweet story of healing and mutual support, I didn’t like the dual First-Person Narrative and didn’t feel as if the author gave me a clear understanding of the world or the romance she was building. I realize this is a prequel to a new series, but I felt like the author missed an opportunity to draw me in to this magical world. Overall, it was an OK read, and while I didn’t care for the writing style, if you like FPN, you might like this book more than I did.

The Quiet Side – Casey Blair
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

So The Quiet Side is technically a prequel novella (book 2 release-wise) in the Sages’ Sanctuary series, but I didn’t even realize that when I started reading. I haven’t read The Quiet Light (book 1)… yet. But honestly? You could totally read this one on its own. It’s short, just around 170 pages, and I really loved it. It gave cozy, rom-com fantasy vibes with just enough to pull you in without needing to take notes on the lore (in my most humble opinion). The connection between the characters is so cute. I loved the conversations, the quirkiness (not the cringey kind at all!), and especially the internal battles each of them quietly carrying. The way Casey Blair writes made it feel like I was watching a scene play out instead of just reading one. She’s super expressive in her character work, and it makes everything feel so natural and alive. You could see the emotions, the expressions, the little moments that said so much without having to do any building and that’s something I always enjoyable. If you’re looking for something short, sweet, and magical that doesn’t demand a lot of mental energy but still gives you feels, The Quiet Side is it. I’ll definitely be picking up book one now that I’ve had a taste. Huge thanks to NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op, and Casey Blair for giving me early access to this gem. It’s published now, go add it to your TBR! 💫

This prequel really got me excited for the main book, which is set to release in 2026. After reading the first chapter, I was eager to understand the world and magic system better. I especially enjoyed watching Kovan go through the different stances.

As the story progressed, I realized the focus was much more on the relationship between Kovan and Tasa, and how both of them dealt with personal struggles and insecurities. At first, I was a little disappointed by the shift in focus, but by the end of the novella, I found myself genuinely looking forward to the full novel, where I hope the world-building and magic system will play a bigger role.

Overall, it was a solid love story, with a nice mix of humor and emotion. Due to the short length, the relationship developed quickly and without major conflict, but it was still enjoyable.

What stood out to me most was the author’s writing style—which is rare for me to notice. Normally, I don’t pay much attention to how a book is written unless it’s distracting. But I really appreciated how The Quiet Side was written, especially the way the protagonists’ thoughts were portrayed. Their inner conflicts, touched with a sense of quiet resignation, felt refreshing. It made me care about Kovan and Tasa right from the start.

7 out of 10.

I absolutely devoured this delicious novella! I am a sucker for a quiet love story, where the dynamics between the MCs shine, and their connection develops quietly and authentically through time spent together and conversation. It’s like being wrapped a warm hug, and this book delivers this so well.

Kovan and Tasa are dreamy together as the perfect grumpy/sunshine pairing. I love the existential crisis and innocence of Kovan questioning everything he’s been taught about life, what it means to be “useful” and “valuable”, and simply what it means to live. The way he’s vulnerable with Tasa about what he believes are his shortcomings, and earnestly questions what he thinks he knows (and doesn’t) is so refreshing and sweet to read. He’s grumpy but also honest, growly but so devoted to making Tasa’s life better. Tasa is such a breath of fresh air. The author does a phenomenal job of writing neurodiversity, and Tasa’s acceptance, insecurities, and determination to make the best of every day make her a delight to read about and easy to root for. Their banter was on point, their deeper conversations were heartfelt, emotional and raw, and their chemistry was 🔥.

I rarely highlight in my kindle but I found myself marking quite a few very profound and meaningful thoughts from these two. A delightful cozy read that will make you think, maybe tear up, and kick your feet in giddiness over their simple quiet deep love story. 4.5/5!!!!

This is a quick fantasy read, built around Kovan, a Sage MMC, experiencing a crisis of faith, and Tasa, a null FMC, who is trying her best to make a place for herself in a community that actively rejects her.

Lots of character growth, which is great, especially as the author let me inside Kovan and Tasa's minds to follow their thinking and evolution of new attitudes, with a spicy romance arc. Although everything is compressed into two days (I think??) it felt fine to me. Authentic and organic considering the unusual nature and societal position of both MC's but a little suspension of disbelief is required. I like the use of some modern words in the conversations, to keep things fresh, and the secondary characters, who bring a lot of energy to the story.

The magic is unique and it's direction through the use of katas performed by sages and priests carries a far eastern feel that I found compelling. It strengthens the wonderful imagery built up by the author's flowing, evocative style.

Book 2, with a dragon and rebellious Sage, sounds like it will be a great follow up.

Wow, described as a steamy cozy fantasy romance with grumpy x sunshine vibes, this prequel novella delivered all of the above. The Sage of Resolve (Kovan), a living avatar of a god, is taken by a dragon and brought to a mountain where another sage has detonated a huge magical field which prevents priests from using their magic unchecked, and caused much destruction to the small village nearby. Kovan has lived a life defined by his magic and his work and has never had time to himself to learn new things and just be, so encountering Tasa, who is a Null and pretty much the exact opposite of Kovan, is a real eye-opener and may change everything he’s ever know about his place in the world. Watching these two learn about each other and how to interact - it seemed they were both walking on eggshells, trying not to inconvenience or upset the other, until they each found their footing by being honest and forthright in their feelings. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to the first book in the Sage’s Sanctuary series, which will feature the Sage of Wrath and the dragon, Zan.

Likable characters, each with a difficult life situation which they begin to learn to master with each other’s help. So far, five star material.

One star off for confusing world building. The whole thing of priests, sages, dragons and, apparently, the use of magic at every level of life including domestic plumbing and home construction was confusing and never became comfortable to me—unfortunate because this whole network of magic is basic to the characters’ life problems.

A second star off because there’s a lengthy, explicit and detailed sex scene. Affectionate, fully consensual, advances the plot, but… geez can’t we have some kind of a rating system so you can know before you download a book how far it goes? Or am I supposed to assume that “Romantasy” is code for porn? You can’t go by the author’s prior work—we never got in bed with Miyara, though she had a strong relationship.

If you love cozy fantasy with a grumpy sage having a mid-life crisis and a sunshiny outcast causing havoc in the local village, then this book is for you.

Kovan and Tasa are wonderful characters, surviving on the quiet side of the world, where since a magical explosion, there is no more magic to sustain the spells supporting everything they use. Add to that the fact they are tussling with some heavy problems, well Kovan is! and the fun begins. There is more trying to figure out how to live their lives than steamy romance, so although there is one scene of steam, it's not rife throughout the book as you might be expecting.

This is a gentle cozy fantasy, where there's only one bed and opposite's definitely attract. A short read, would have loved for it to be longer, but it was a very enjoyable read.

I backed the Kickstarter for the the extremely pretty special edition hardback, and I love it. I hope you do too.
